How to compress footage to use in iDVD?

I have a project that is 2 hours and 1 second. I am not up to speed with DVD Studio Pro yet so I need to use iDVD to burn my project. What are my options in terms of compressing it down so that it will fit on a DVD? When I tried to do it, a prompt came up saying my file was to big and I couldnt burn the disc.
Any suggestions?

What are my options in terms of compressing it down
With just iDVD, no "pre-compression" options really, as iDVD will always re-encode (compress) anything you give it. You'll have to edit it to make it shorter. And you'll probably need to get rid of more than you think too, as the "two hour" limit doesn't include the menus, etc.
You might be able to make a dual layer image with iDVD

and then use another application (Popcorn, DVD2One) to make it fit on a single layer.

  • How to compress footage with a 2:1 aspect ratio

    I have some Red footage shot in 2:1, and when I use a preset Compressor stretches it to fit the 16:9 aspect ratio. I tried adding padding, but that gives me gray bars on the top and bottom when I output to dvd.
    Any suggestions on how to keep my aspect ratio? Thanks.

    Hi Tom, thanks so much for answering. I totally get the need to letterbox but my issue is, how do I get the best quality in letterbox format?
    Should I export it thru QT Conversion or just Export to Quicktime Movie? I exported as a self contained movie to keep the quality but when I send it thru the MPEG-2 compressor for DVD it fills the 16x9 frame without letterbox.
    How would I modify the MPEG-2 preset to give me the letterbox in the MPEG-2?
    I've been playing around but haven't hit the jackpot yet.
    If there's any info you have, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much

  • I import in HD and Export in HD 1280x720 and Use the IDVD burner How do I get the best quality? It seems to be a generation down on quality.

    Need help with getting best quality for DVD's.

    The best quality you can get is to first understand that the biggest frame you can play back using a DVD player is 720x480. So no matter how big the image is going into iDVD it is throwing away some information to get it all to fit 720x480. Your best option then is go to Share Menu > Media Browser... Then choose the Large size.
    Open iDVD and find your video project by clicking on the Media button in the iDVD lower right hand corner. Then above that there's the media browser window with the Movies button on the right hand side. Click Movies button and browse for your project under the iMovie star icon.
    Drag that project into a clip and burn the project to a DVD-R.

  • How do I compress PDF files using Acrobat SDK?

    have a web service created in a .net environment that examines existing pdf files in a staging directory prior to sending them over the wire using FTP.
    Part of that process requires that I rename individual files in order to associate them with a particular batch.
    I also have a requirement to reduce the size of individual files as much as possible in order to reduce the traffic going over the line.
    So far I have managed about a 30% compression rate by using an open source library (iTextSharp).
    I  am hoping that I can get a better compression rate using the Acrobat SDK, but I need someone to show me how, hopefully with an example that I can follow.
    The following code snippet is a model I wrote that accomplishes the rename and file compression...
                const string filePrefix = "19512-";
                string[] fileArray = Directory.GetFiles(@"c:\temp");
                foreach (var pdffile in fileArray) {
                    string[] filePath = pdffile.Split('\\');
                    var newFile = filePath[0] + '\\' + filePath[1] + '\\' + filePrefix + filePath[2];
                    var reader = new PdfReader(pdffile);
                    var stamper = new PdfStamper(reader, new FileStream(newFile, FileMode.Create), PdfWriter.VERSION_1_5);
                    int pageNum = 1;
                    for (int i = 1; i <= pageNum; i++) {
                        reader.SetPageContent(i, reader.GetPageContent(i), PdfStream.BEST_COMPRESSION);
                    stamper.Writer.CompressionLevel = PdfStream.BEST_COMPRESSION;
                    stamper.FormFlattening = true;
                    stamper.SetFullCompression();
                    stamper.Close();
    Any assistance is appreciated.

    You can't use Adobe Acrobat on a server.

  • Thoughts on BEST COMPRESSION for use with iDVD and DVD Studio Pro...

    Hi all...
    I'm having an issue with some visual artifacts that are present after burning a dvd using either idvd or dvd studio pro.
    My sequence containts footage (h.264) and photographs with titles. The photos (w/moves) look great, very crisp. So do the titles.
    However, the video looks awful. Pans and tilts creating streaking, so does any action with the frame.
    I don't see this streaking while viewing in the qt window or when previewing the dvd...
    I'm exporting as a qt reference using the dv/dvc pro setting, when I check the dvd on an ntsc monitor, the image is very streaky.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Are you using FCP?? Then I see why you said QT reference movie... which is the best way. Being more descriptive about your setting when posting a question will return more helpful answers. (editing tool, source materials, machine spec...etc) You said that your footage was h264 and you posted your question in iMovie forum so I couldn't have guessed FCP and DV...
    If your sequence is DV on FCP I can't think of anything else but QT reference movie route. I don't understand why your video won't show interlacing in QT player or DVD preview, but perhaps they force deinterlacing for preview, who knows.
    You said your DVD looks 'very streaky' on ntsc tv. Is it to the point that it looks unnatural? Is overall motion jerky? If so, perhaps the field order had been messed with and changed. But I'm not quite sure about the exact nature of your problem. Visual problem in a subjective verbal description can be hard to communicate

  • Does anyone know how to upload footage from an SDHC to mac not using FCP or imovie?

    Does anyone know how to upload footage from an SDHC card on a mac that doesn't involve using Final Cut Pro or iMovie? Those don't have many options for import/encoding settings. They also upload the clips into an enormous file size. I always have to re-export them in MPEG streamclip or Compressor to lower the file size and it's getting annoying. HELP!

    Won't help the size methinks, but does Image Capture work?

  • HELP! Cannot Compress Footage to Single Layer DVD...

    Here's my problem.
    I cannot compress footage to single layer DVD. I'm trying to make a DVD with motion menus and a full length feature. TRT 1 hr 47 min 3 sec. I compressed the video and audio using compressor after it did not fit on one single layer DVD the first attempt. The file sizes of the newly compressed video and audio are adequate to fit on the 4.7GB DVD but after importing the into DVD Studio Pro 4 (DSP4) the disc size comes out to 5.1GB. After DSP4 does its own encoding the file sizes double. I cannot figure this out. Please help.

    AS per David suggestion, get yourself on A.Pack and convert your audio to Ac3.
    a link to explain how to use A.pack for a dvd project (providing that you have A.pack still, otherwise you will have to use Compressor, depending what version of the suite you have.
    Still this link will help you both:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/Tutorials/ProV1/FCP.multi-channel.htm
    Depending on your version of Compressor, you may have A pack or you may not...
    An AIFF File could increase your project by a gig...
    There shouldn't be any problem in fitting that size project on a single layer project...

  • How to compress my file

    Hi,
    I am working on a wedding video that I shot with two cameras. I have edited it down and the final project was about 2 hours and 10 minutes. I used compressor and converted it to a mpeg2 which reduced the file to 1.9 gigs. However, I have come to discover that IDVD does not accept that file type.
    Next I re compressed it into a .mov, but that only reduced it to 10 gigs - which won't fit on a standard size dvd...
    I re-edited the film to 1 hour and 30 minutes, but still the file size is just over 7 gigs as a .mov.
    Does anyone have any suggestions on how to compress it without having to whittle it down to under an hour?
    Thanks for your help.

    When I initially finished the project, I exported as a Quicktime movie and it was 49+ gigs! (Yikes!)
    Still learning the Final Cut Suite and opened up Compressor for the first time realizing that it was the tool I needed. I compressed it down to 1.91 gigs, but did so as a .mpg - which I learned was not compatible with either iDVD or Studio Pro.
    That's when I scrolled down the list of "settings" and realized I could make it a .mov, which only got it down to 10 gigs. Which is where I was when I posted for help.
    I think I finally got it now, thank you so much for the help and advice...

    Hello All...
    Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
    I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.

    Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
    If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

  • How can I add new content in iDVD to a DVD-RW disc which has ample remaining free space? After preparing the new video for burning and clicking on Burn to iDVD, I get a window saying the disc's already recorded and that I can either Erase or Eject.

    How can I add new content in iDVD to a DVD-RW disc with a video previously successfully recorded on it? (The disc has ample remaining free space.)
    After preparing the new video for burning and clicking in the File menu on Burn to iDVD, I get a window saying the disc's already recorded and that I can either Erase or Eject. My assumption has been that iDVD would automatically find the free space and continue with the new recording from there. I'd be grateful if anyone can shine light on this.

    There are, but not with a DVD written as a movie disk. It must be closed when completed, or it doesn't work.
    Apple's built in Burn utility also automatically closes any data CD, DVD or Blu-ray disk you burn. Doesn't matter how much space is unused, you can't use it. You'd have to use a more advanced disk creation app, such as Toast Titanium. I then have the option of choosing to write the data as a session:
    I can keep doing this until the disk is full. If I've written five sessions to the disk, when I put it in the drive, five CD/DVD icons will appear on the desktop since the OS will treat each session as if they are separate physical disks. At any point you choose Write Disk when writing a group of data, that means you're closing the disk, and again can't add anything after that. So if I had written two sessions, and the third was Write Disk, it's over. I can't put anything else on that disk.

  • TS1233 How do I get chapter markers for iDVD from Final Cut Pro X?

    It seems like a tremendous short-coming that Final Cut Pro X doesn't allow for chapter markers that can be used in iDVD or DVD Pro. Surely there is some way to get used-defined markers from Final Cut Pro X or at least re-define the Final Cut Pro X markers in the DVD authoring applications. Does anyone know how to do this?

    I have decided to say that my problem is solved by the work-a-rounds that have been submitted. I STILL don't like the fact tha Apple has decided that DVD's are a thing of the past and therefore (chapter) markers are of no use. That may be true is the publishing world of YouTube, Vimeo, etc. but it certainly NOT true for many of us advanced hobbyists that still like distribution on DVD's to our friends or a more localized (private) community -- especially to those who are not computer literate. If Apple wants to exclude us from their customer base, I suggest that base will become even smaller than their competitors who still have chapter markers in their products. I'll get off my soapbox now. . .

  • How to compress a bunch of .java files into a single .jar file?

    Hello everyone! I am working on a Chinese segmentation job. Someone offers very excellent
    such tool. When I copy his example, I find it imports
              import org.apache.lucene.analysis.Analyzer;
              import org.apache.lucene.analysis.Token;
              import org.apache.lucene.analysis.TokenStream;
              import org.mira.lucene.analysis.IK_CAnalyzer;I have downloaded IK_CAnalyzer.jar file which contains org.mira.lucene.analysis.IK_CAnalyzer class.
    I find that I need to download lucene, thus I went into the following website
    http://lucene.apache.org/#06+May+2008+-+Lucene+Java+2.3.2+availableand downloaded the lucene-2.3.2-src.tar.gz. Aftre unzip, I found all java source files in java directory (and in many other different subdirectories). Now it seems I need to compile all the src files and compress them into a single .jar file while keeping their original hierarchy unchanged
    I think I should use jar command and with some additional options.
    Can anyone show me how to do that?
    Many thanks!

    Thanks for reply, I?ve read that tutorial before I post. Howevver, it do tells how to compress a jar file.
    The question I have is how to compile two .java file stored in different packages like
    rootPackage-->subPackage-->a.java
    rootPackage-->subPackage2-->b.java
    I want to compile a,java and b.java both and keep their hierarchy like rootPackage.subPackage.a unchanged. If I directly go into subPackage and compile a.java, I think the hierarchy is changed.
    What do you think about it?
