I am sending this out to everyone that can help me to compress my files and folders, as I believe my macbook pro is starting to freeze and caused by having a slow machine, is there anyone that can suggest to me how and what do I use to compress these files into one folder.

You can 'compress' files and folders from the Finder by selecting the items and choosing File>Compress "selected file or folder". This will create a zip archive and will save you some space. (I just tried it on a 16GB folder and it compressed it to an 11GB zip file). After you zip the file/folder the original can be deleted )until you need to access it again, then you can just double-click the zip file).
If you're trying to free up disk space on your hard drive, this is not the best method... but you didn't ask about that...

I need to know how to "compress" the Folder Tree. The File folders are moving to the right and out of sight in Lightroom 5.
A couple of suggestions that may help:
- Make sure you've made the left-hand column as wide as possible by grabbing the divider between the column and the Library grid view.
- You can hide a parent folder from the display by right-clicking it and selecting Hide This Parent. This will shift all the child folders to the left. -
I loaded my ipad photos from camera and all the pictures sorted by date. I later sync my ipad with my computer and the photos were all reorganized into IMPRT folders an out of date sequence. Any idea how to put the photos back into date files other than reloading all of them from camera?
What version of iPhoto?
Select one and rotate it. Then rotate it back. Does that make it appear?
A much better work flow is the keep the photos after importing. Check the success the import, wait for at least one successful backup cycle then use you camera's format command to reformat the card

All of my songs have exclamation points next to them but when I go to my iTunes media folder to find the files, there is nothing in the folders. Any idea what happened and how I can get my music back?
I wish I could help. There are numerous threads about missing music but last I looked, no solution. You might want to read through them anyway.

Can I delete files in "All My Files" under Finder and Favorites without deleting them in the actual folders? If they will be deleted from the original folders then how do I put them on the external hard drive to save the documents, photos, and videos?
Switch to the Finder app and open its preferences.
Remove the check mark on the items you don't want displayed in the Sidebar tab.
The originals are not removed from the machine. -
How do I compress a file on a Mac. I do not see and option to compress a file when I right click on it and the Apple help does not provide and accurate answer
Select the file with one click, then go to File in the menu bar and select Compress...
By the way Niel's post says control - click. This means click with the control key held down. It produces the same result as going to File in the menu bar and selecting Compress... -
My macbook keeps locking all of my folders and files, even when I try unlocking them myself in Get Info and disabling autolocking in Time Machine, how can I stop the locking as well as unlock my files?
Managed to solve this myself. Just went to properties > hidden.

I don't get the option of compressing or archiving files in finder window. My mac at work has the archive function in the box with the cog. Something missing on my imac?
i don't want 3rd party stuff on my mac. i seems that I can compress or archive files if they haven't been imported through iphoto, but once they're in iphoto, i can't compress them or archive them.
In the finder window, when I start going deeper through the various directories, and i get to iphotos, it opens and doesn't let me get any further into the finder directories. any way i can see filenames only instead of having iphoto open when I get to it?
sorry for such a stupid sounding situation and not being able to exactly describe the issue. My mac at work is so easy to use and never launches iphoto. Thank everyone for your help. -
My computer's main files became corrupted and I had to "refresh" the system. It kept my files, but erased all of the programs. I had to even re-install Microsoft Word. So it erased my downloaded Lightroom as well.
However, all of my files are still on the computer, including the file labeled "Lightroom 5 Catalog" and 2 others like it.
My question is, how do I go about getting the program BACK onto my computer and having the program recognize that all of the pictures currently in my "Library/Pictures" folder have at one point already been imported through LR? I don't really even know what I'm talking about; I am not super techy. Maybe if I download it again it will already recognize all the files? I just want to move cautiously because I'm dealing with all the pictures of my 4 year old daughter who died last year.

Yes, the files are still located in the same drive, the exact same place Lightroom put them (in Pictures in Library).
When I double-click on the catalog file, it opens up multiple folders with little white "document-looking" blank pages, and when I click on those, it open a dialog box that says "How do you want to open this type of a file (.Ircat)?" with a little box below that says "Look for an app in the store".
So I don't think my computer knows how to open them...I think I need to re-download Lightroom. I just want to make sure I'm not going to mess up the files. -
i set up my new computer using the apple ID i always use, and then later migrated all my files from my old mac book to the same new one, but under a different user (same apple ID). how do i consolidate the two users on my new mac book?
Well if you use the Finder Go menu to Computer, a window opens up double click on your boot drive and then on Users folder, open the other user folder and open Public and drop your files into DropBox
When you do this it will copy them and change the permissions and user assigned to it, so log into the other user and place them into your respective normal folders.
Once you have all your files over and don't need the old user, use System Preferences > Accounts to delete it if you wish, however it's good two Admin accounts on the machine in case something bad happens in the other. Some people for security reasons on use a Standard account for most uses and a emergency Admin account.
One can still do most Admin things in Standard user. -
How can I STOP iTunes from automatically trying to add podcasts to my iPod when I plug it in and sync it, so I can manage the files? I have already unchecked "Sync Podcasts" and "Automatically include,"yet EVERY time I sync it,it still transfers podcasts as the last step, and at other times randomly, when trying to just add some MP3's to a playlist, for example. I can't seem to find any other option to uncheck, and can't find an answer from my so-far internet searching.
erict, you blew me away with that suggestion! It was something so simple I couldnt believe I hadnt thought of it! But in the end it didn't work, which I was really surprised about. On Windows anytime anything was moved itunes was hoplessly lost, but on this mac it still kept up with everything. I tried renaming folders, moving folders, and even renaming moved folders but it still kept trying to import.
I even went as far as deleting EVERYTHING i had moved to the Mac, which didnt really work. It still kept trying to import what wasnt there which made it continue to freeze up. However, after doing this it, the freezing was not nearly as bad. It gave me enough of a break to cancel it through the itunes dialog box at the top of the app. So in the end, thats all I really needed to do, only before I had deleted everything the freezing would not allow me to do it.
So now Im reimporting everything again, only slowly, and only a few Artists at a time. -
My music files etc were all located on my old laptop which was stolen. I have just plugged my iphone in to my new computer and it has deleted all my files. Has anybody got any ideas on how to retrieve the files?

Connect the iPod to your PC. If iTunes starts syncing (ie erasing) your music automatically, hit the X in the upper right hand corner of iTunes display, to the left of the search box, to stop it.
In Control Panel, Portable Media Devices, double-click your iPod.
In the Tools menu -> Options, in the View Tab, check "Show hidden files and folders."
Navigate to the Music folder. On my 'pod, the full path is
Portable Media Devices\NAME of IPOD (F:)\iPod_Control\Music
Select all the music folders, and drag and drop them into a folder on your hard drive, or directly into iTunes.
And you're done! The iPod music folder structure is strange and inexplicable, but once you move your files into iTunes you can set it to automatically organize your folder by artist and album to clean that up. (To do this, in iTunes Edit menu, choose Preferences and in the Advanced tab, check "Keep iTunes Music Folder organized."

I have 30 or so folders in my main bookmarks directory, and I need to export just one of them to another computer. I've tried various ways, but the entire bookmark file ends up in the export.l
Ok, found a way that works, but it's kinda inelegant. Remember, my task was how to export one of 18 favorites directories:
1) Open the Favorites Library (see above for methods).
2) Click on the "Import and Backup" menu item, select "Backup..." and follow instructions to create a backup file.
3) Back in the Favorites Library, in the left pane click on "Bookmarks Menu". You should see all of your bookmarks and bookmark folders in the right pane.
4) Click on one of them then do Ctrl-a to select all of them.
5) Holding the Ctrl key down de-select the folder(s) you wish to export.
6) With all the unwanted folders and bookmarks selected, hit the delete key.
7) Now do an export. It will contain only the folders/bookmarks you did not delete.
8) Once you verify the exported file contains what you want, go back to the Favorites Library, click on the "Import and Backup" menu, select "Restore...", navigate to your backup file and restore your Favorites.
Took longer to type the above steps than it actually takes to do it... -
I've recently started using iTunes regularly to import CDs. Since then, I've found my Windows 'My Music' folder is behaving in bizarre ways.
I like to organise most of my music in folders by Genre --> Album title, without paying attention to Artist. I also like to rename certain album folders (and the Album name in each track's metadata as well, so that each album/folder remains consistent), and also to create customised 'mix tape' album folders. I just want to use Windows Explorer / My Computer to manage this; I don't want to do it via iTunes. I just want to use iTunes for initially getting the music from CD to computer.
Previously, when I was using Windows Media Player to import CDs, if Windows Media Player placed an imported CD under a folder category I don't use, such as Artist, I would just manually move the Album folder and delete the empty parent Artist folder. However these days iTunes is spontaneously creating an entire series of Artist folders, even for tracks and albums that were already on my computer, and is placing duplicate track files into them. Additionally, it's renaming albums for folders and tracks I've customised, turning album titles back into their original values. This is happening even though the destination for newly imported/downloaded iTunes tracks is not the My Music folder itself, but rather another folder within that one. I've had a look at Preferences --> Advanced and the 'Keep iTunes media folder organised' and 'Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library' boxes are already unchecked, so it's not related to that anyway. How do I get iTunes to leave my folders alone?First off see this user tip so should any further unwanted changes happen you have a chance to revert to your original layout.
It is not unknown for AV software to interfere with iTunes and corrupt its configuration files. If this happens iTunes can revert to the default settings to "Keep..." & "Copy...". Deselecting those options won't return any files to their original paths.
If you have "Show iTunes in the Cloud Purchases" enabled under Edit > Preferences > Store that can lead iTunes to download the original metadata for any of your purchases and show that instead of any edits you may have made to it. Turing that option off and restarting iTunes may reveal your version of the metadata.
There is another option under Edit > Preferences > Store that reads "Share details about your library with Apple" although I don't think that changes metadata in the way that the similar option in Windows Media Player does. Double-check your settings in Windows Media Player (Options > Library) to make sure it isn't set to "Retrieve additional information from the Internet". This is usually the cause of spontaneous tag resetting. WMP can be called into life in the background when visiting certain websites and it has a lazy cache, meaning it can sometimes write out metadata to your media files long after the data was originally acquired.
It is also work noting that mp3 files may contain multiple tags and iTunes, for one, treats these unpredictably. In some cases it may appear to accept and write out a tag change only to later read back the original unchanged data from another copy of the tag.

How do I move folders with subfolders (containing pdf files) from my pc to ipad 3 to use in adobe reader
You need to connect the ipad to the computer and open itunes.
Open the ipad and go into settings, icloud. Tap on "Documents and Data" and turn that on to sync to icloud.
Now go back into itunes and it should pick up your ipad already and tap on the ipad connection. There will pop up some taps on the center screen for sync options. Go thru each one (summary, info, apps, music, tv shows, podcasts, itunesU, books and photos).....you want to click on "Books".
To the left click the arrow next to the ipad under Devices.
The arrow will point down and open the sub menu, click on the "Books" sub menu here. You will see in the center window current books, PDF currently on the ipad.
Next go to the top and click on "File" (file, edit, view, controls, store, advanced, help) and click on "add folder to library"...... it will bring up your computer file system in a seperate window. File the folder your looking for and add it. This should get the folder set up to sync onto ipad thru itunes.
For additional ease in doing things on the middle window of itunes click back on summary, scroll a bit and you will see "Backup", click on "Backup to icloud". Then under "Options", check "Sync with this ipad over WiFi".
This will allow you to wirelessly sync your itunes and your ipad without having the ipad connected to the computer with a cable. You just have to be on the same wireless network.
If in itunes you add something like a pdf or photo, when your on your ipad open the Ibooks or Iphoto app and it wull update the file system to match your itunes account. The sync with with anything you do in itunes and it works the other way around also. If you save files, photos, books on the ipad, using the ipad (app store purchases, games, books)....the ipad will update to itunes next time your on the same network.
FYI - both the ipad and the computer have to be on.
Itunes updates (changes you make thru itunes), does not need itunes to be open for update content to update to the ipad. This is because it updates to the cloud.
Updates from the ipad to itunes will need itunes open on the computer. So it can sync with the cloud info. -

Hmm . . . comes with a Utility MPEG2 Component ML app with no explanation of what it's for?
The utility app is an "assistant PKG installer." It allows Lion and Mountain Lion users to install the older QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installer PKG file which is not allowed to run on its own under Lion or Mountain Lion since these operating systems already have a QT X only MPEG-2 component embedded in the QT embedded structure. Without this utility you would have to either copy the component from an older system to your Lion or Mountain Lion system, use Pacifist for installation, or manually open the PKG contents and transfer the component to the appropriate component folder.
As to your "discussion" regarding the playback of AVI file types, there are really only two strategies here:
1) You can add component support so that QT can play the files natively or
2) You can convert the file contents to compression formats that are natively compatible with the unmodified QT component configuration.
Each user should decide for his or her own self which approach best suits their needs for a particular source file. In most cases, conforming the system's codec component configuration to play the source file directly results in higher video quality since no transcoding takes place but this strategy will not work if a codec which is required is not available for the user's operating system. On the other hand, converter utilities tend to support more built-in codecs and are easier to use since the user does not have to concern him or herself with the nature of the particular source compression formats but at the risk of some potential loss in visual quality. As to what converter to use, once again this is a matter of personal choice. In the case of commercial converters like iSkysoft, the codecs are built in while MPEG Streamclip accesses the host operating system's QT codec component configuration. I personally prefer the free HandBrake app for AVI, MKV, TS, MTS, and M2TS conversions since it has an exceptionally full-featured X.264 GUI with some user options that 97% of users are likely to never use.
