I have a Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G wireless router and 2 Airport Extremes (the small ones that plug directly into the wall). Is it possible to extend the network from the router using these two AEs? I have a DVD player and Ext HD plugged into the router too. Any ideas? I'm guessing the only way is to do what I've seen in these community pages which states that it can be done but it will drop the bandwidth by 50%. Thoughts?? Thanks!

The Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G was one of the very few routers said to be compatible with Apple's implementation of WDS (Wireless Distribution System) settings.
The info that I have on file indicates that only the WRT-54G versions 4 and under were compatible, so that would be one bridge to cross.
Even if you find that your Cisco/Linksys might be the right version, Apple never published instructions on how to configure the Express devices with other manufactures, so users were left to their own devices to try to figure out how to get things working. Apple's instructions to connect to other Apple devices are in the link below:
    WDS network
If you were hoping to use 2 Express devices in this type of configuration...even if it works...the bandwidth penalties will be extremely severe.
The first Express drops the bandwidth (and speed) on the entire network in half and the second halves everything again. So, the result, in effect would be a "g" wireless network running at 25% speed. Few users would consider installing this type of network.
At this point, it becomes one of those things where the fact that you might be able to do something does not mean that there would be much value in doing so. But, it is your decision to decide if you want to try to proceed.

  • Need Help setting up 2 wireless internet computers with 54g wireless router

I setup the 54g wireless router using the setup disk.  It appears to have worked find and the first laptop has wireless internet.  I am not familiar with setting up a totally wireless network so I am not sure if I did the rest right.  I then setup the 54g wireless internet router on the 2nd computer.  It appears to have loaded but will not connect to the internet.  I looked at the linksys setup etc... for both computers and all is the same including the WPA key, IP address, and the rest.  No differences noted.  I have no idea why the 2nd computer does not have wireless internet access.  It has wired access only.  The 2nd computer shows the wireless network but won't connect to it.  I click on it and hit refresh and nothing happens.  I am at a loss as to what to do now.
With 2 wireless computers, must there be a main computer and a secondary computer?  The 1st computer also doesn't have access to windows network setup for some reason.  It tells me to go to the knowledge base at microsoft.com and look up 871122.  No idea why the windows network setup is not working.  It did work before I got a new cable service provider and modem.  However, the windows network setup is working on the 2nd computer. Any help is appreciated.

does the 2nd computer even need the router info loaded into it like the 1st computer or should it be enough that the wireless network was created on the 1st computer?  In other words, would having the router info loaded in both computers cause the 2nd one to not connect?  I have spent hours on this and I am very confused now.
My router connects fine to the cable modem.  the 1st computer connects fine to the router and gets the wireless internet without a problem.  Again, the 2nd computer shows the network name but won't connect to it.  help please!!

  • How to set up Airport Express to extend Buffalo WHR HP 54g wireless router

Contrary to what official Apple policy is, it is possible to use Airport Express as a remote repeater using a Buffalo router.
I sent hours setting up this network and wish to share what I learned
I only wanted to use the Airport Express as a repeater to distribute the internet to the far reaches of the house--no iTunes, no Printer, and I did not bother setting security.  If you want to add any of those features please make sure that the basic setup is working as described below.  I have no idea how to successfully set up these features.  My advice is to search the internet for guidance.
Anyway:  how to set up the Buffalo wireless access router to work with Airport Express
    Setting up the Buffalo:
From the routers home page of 192.168.11.1, hit the "advanced" box at the top
    1.     Go the "Wireless config"   "basic" item.  Give name to your network (spaces are allowed), lets call it "WIRENAME" and select wireless channel 1 or 6 or 11. These channels have the least interference and will tend to work when the others do not.
    2.     Go the the "repeater" item under Wireless config.  . " Enable" repeater/bridge (WDS).  Next register the MAC address of the Airport Express.  Record both the LAN and Wireless MAC addresses.
That is about it.  Your Buffalo system Info page should look like this
    Model
    WHR-HP-G54 Ver.1.40        (1.0.37-1.08-1.04)

  • How do I find out my wireless router's ip address

I'm need to loginto my wireless router, but have forgotten its IP address.  How do I find out what it is?

That's not the IP he needs - he needs the router's NAT IP, which will likely be covered by those suggested above.

  • How to config MSI GT70 Super RAID correctly?

    Hi guys,
I got my MSI GT70 with the 64*2 SSD + 750 HDD configuration. It can only get a read speed around 650 MB/s in hdtune. I searched in another forum and found some one said "MSI representative told us our test unit was actually underperforming on the SSD front. Our machine clocked 656 MB/s read and 354 MB/s write speeds in the ATTO disk benchmark, but it's rated to top out at 900 MB/s when properly configured".
So does anyone know how to config the raid correctly to get a 900MB/s speed? Many many thanks!!!

Finally I manage to find out what is happening on my laptop. The Stripe size of my raid0 is set to 32KB by default. After I changed that to 128KB, the read speed show a 965MB/s max read speed in the HDTune benchmark.
These are the steps I did the change:
    1. Backup the whole system. Changing the stripe size will wipe all the data.
    2. Ctrl + I, go to the raid configuration screen.
    3. Delete the existing raid setting.
    4. Created a new one with stripe size of 128K.
    5. Restore the system.
Hope my experience can give some hints to those who are confused by the same problem.

  • How do you replace a Virgin wireless router with a time capsule?

    Hi Folks
i have just bought a brand new 1tb time capsule yesterday and im trying to connect it too my virgin modem and replace the virgin wireless router i already have.....i thought it would be an easy setup of just plugging in the ethernet cable into the time capsule..but this has not worked??..can this be done?? i have restarted all devices too!...i am now clueless!
the the time capsule has backed up my hard drive (mac book pro) with no problems!
    kind regards
    kathdol

Are you talking about a separate modem and Virgin router, rather than their wretched 'Superhub' (modem and router combined) - the latter is a whole different can of worms.
Assuming the former, you should be able to remove the Virgin router and plug your Time Capsule into the modem: you will need to power down the modem and leave it for a few minutes (to forget the MAC address of the Virgin router), then plug in the TC and power up the modem. Make sure that the TC is set to 'Share a public IP number', not 'Distribute a range of IP numbers' or 'Bridge mode'. (If the interface is the same as the Airport Express it's 'Manual Setup'>'Internet' (in the toolbar)>Internet settings.

  • How to hookup AE to dlink wireless router hardwired to computer??

    Guys,
I have a computer that is hooked up directly to a dlink wireless router. I bought the router specifically to communicate with AE. I cannot find any network to join. Will a setup like this work?
Or do I need to just go back and buy a wireless card for my computer?

The ethernet port on an AX is only active and usable for an external device when the AX joins a network using the WDS protocol. WDS only works with AEBS, AX, and a limited number of third-party wireless routers. Without buying a WDS compatible router, you will need an ethernet to wireless bridge like the Linksys WET54G, or a wireless card for your computer.

  • How do I restrict access to Wireless router (800 series) by mac address

I hope I'm in the correct area.
I'm trying to deny access to 3 wireless devices to the cisco 800 series wireless router
    The MAC address are:
MAC Address    IP address      Device        Name            Parent         State
    0014.6caf.410a 192.168.2.26    unknown       -               self           Assoc
    9803.d8ba.cd42 192.168.2.41    unknown       -               self           Assoc
    a4d1.d205.72e1 192.168.2.25    unknown
If this cannot be done is it poosible to assign the mac address to an ip address and then denying access to the ip address.
    Thanks
    Jon

    Hello Jon,
You should be able to do it either way. Best way would be by IP address so you do not even allow the host to associate with your AP.

  • How can I connect a Linksys Wireless Router to another Wireless Router?

As subject -- how can I do this:
    WirelessRouterA <-> WirelessRouterB <-> CableModem <-> Internet
RouterA and RouterB are in two different locations, hard to wire.

You should get a wireless bridge for the router that is in the location away from the modem.

  • How to config network card to detect router?

    Hi everyone,
I am newbie to solaris, I installed solaris on my old PC, and it has the Netgear FA311 card. It is supported by Solaris according to HCL.
however, it doesn't seem like it is auto-detecting the router.. as result, there is not internet connection.
So, may I ask for your help ?
1.) how do I know my existing network card is detected and installed probably in Solaris? is it auto detect?
2.) how do I manually config to detect my router?
    Thanks

Are you trying to get an IP using dhcp or static IP.
If your trying to use dhcp then make sure your hostname is in /etc/nodename
and do a "touch /etc/dhcp.<int>" where <int> is the name of the driver for your interface.
If your trying to do static then put the IP of the router in /etc/defaultrouter
    And your hostname in /etc/hostname.<int>
And make sure you have an entry for your hostname in /etc/hosts and /etc/inet/ipnodes

  • How do I set up my wireless router for a secure connection

I lost my password to access my router. I reset  the router to added a wireless printer and I now I'm trying to secure the connection. I have tried 192.168.1.1 IP address, but it takes me to Bing.com. I can't get to the login page to type in the admin password.

First of all do not use the Wireless computer to access the Router's setup page.Use the wired computer.Check the ip address you are getting from the router..Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt...A black box will appear(Command Prompt)...In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...
IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 (assuming your router is 192.168.1.1)...
If you get the above mentioned IP Address, Subnet and Gateway Address then you should ping the Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...If it gives you request timed out then disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer...
If you get 4 replies then, adjust Browser Settings... Open an IE, click Tools >> Internet Options, then delete all files, cookies, history, forms...Goto "Connections", make sure Never Dial a Connection is checked, click on LAN Settings and make sure all the options are unchecked...Once you are done click on OK...Close the IE and re-open it...
    Now try.......

  • How can I get my Cisco wireless router to wirelessly connect to my Verizon Fios Actiontec router?

I have Verizon Fios for internet, tv and phone. The Verizon Actiontec router is connected with a ethernet cable into my desktop and the internet is up and running. Now I bought a Cisco Linksys WRT54GL Wireless-G Broadband Router, and I wanted to connect it to another desktop two floors up. I set up the Cisco router according to the instructions, but I'm not able to connect to the internet. It shows that my computer was able to get a Local Network connection, but internet connection keeps failing.... I tried changing the IP address. But I'm confused about the whole thing. Is the Default gateway number suppose to be the same for both routers? Is it possible that the Actiontec router isnt giving off a strong enough wireless signal? I'm open for suggestions! Thanks

    Mac or Windows machine?
Is the WRT connected directly to the upstairs computer? I don't think you can use the WRT that way?
Have you had a look here?:http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/General-Linksys-Router-FAQs/td-p/4286
I THINK you would have to have a WETxx (Ethernet Adapter)  instead?
If it connects to the Internet even breifly then I suppose that means your connected but it may be losing the signal and failng. You would porbably have ot get a WAP(Access Point) and use it as a repeater.
I'm a bit rusty on the names so I hope i got them right, hope it helps.....

  • How do i lock my wrt54g wireless router

    can someone help me please

Is there any computer connected to the router ?
If not then you will need to connect the computer to the router.
Do not change any wireless settings on the router with the wireless computer.
you will need to connect the computer to the router with the Ethernet cable.
check the IP address of the computer.
open the router set up page of the router.
Here you can change the wireless settings of the router.
Now once you change the network anme and security on the router, you will need to connect to the wireless network on your wireless computers.
    Try this
