How to configure an external Cisco MDS 9124 Switch

I have worked with some other Fibre switches before but not Cisco and was wondering if someone can pass me some quick info on how to configure the MDS 9124. I saw the Quick Guide and it briefly talked about config, but do I have to go thru hyperterminal to do the initial IP config? Is there a default one already I can use to get to the WebGUI. Some of the ones I worked with (like the ones that come with the Bladecenter) have a default IP, where I can enter the IP into the web browser and access the GUI right away and start doing configs.
With the MDS 9124, can I do this? Or do I have to configure IP thru hyperterminal and then install Fabric Manager etc.
Thanks in advance for any help!

I assume that you actually read the guide:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/storage/san_switches/mds9000/hw/9124/quick/quide/9124QSG.html
Setup of the network is pretty clear. If the switch is brand new, you have to give it an IP address. Generally just follow the dotted line and don't vary except if you know what you are doing.
Once its on the network, DM and FM can do the rest.
The 9124e's don't have serial ports so the OA looks after that for you.

  • Cisco MDS series switch details

Hello I 'm new to CISCO  Switch world.
I 'm working as Clariion Admin and have have taken up the responsibilty to manage switches.Since,i am a novice i need little guidance on how work on cisco switches.I know the Zoning (how zoning done on MDS 9000 series switches) part ,but would like to venture deep into the details on CISCO MDS series switches.
Like, the use of Port channels etc.
Will really appreciate if some one can help me with a link or place ( not the configuration guide) where in i can find details on concentrated more on the theory part .
    Thanks in advance!

Actually the best info is in the configuration guides.  There are some external companies that run training sessions on the MDS to provide in depth training.  There is the MDS cookbook available on CCO that is also a good point of information.    If you search on 'MDS white papers' after you login into Cisco.com, there are several good documents that might meet your needs.
    Hope this hels,

  • Using Cisco MDS 9148 switch for switching and routing

    Hi Gurus,
Can you please advice me! Can i configure interface trunking, routing and dhcp services on the Cisco MDS 9148 switch?
    Thanks for your response!!

    Tommy,
MDS9148 is a Storage SAN Fibre Channel switch, it doesn't support Ethernet, IP, VLANs, VLAN trunking, 802.1Q, IP routing, DHCP. It's meant for Fibre Channel connectivity between Fibre Channel server HBAs and Fibre Channel storage.

  • LAG configuration issue on Cisco SG300 52 Switch

    Hi everybody,
I am having an issue with LAG configuration on a Cisco SG300 52 switch. I have connected four Ge ports on the switch to the four NICs of a Dell R710 Server on which I installed Windows Server 2008 R2. Without LAG configured, these ports would forward traffic to and from the Dell server fine. However, if I configure LAG on the ports with LACP enabled, then they would not forward any network traffic. Debugging shows that the ports are up but their forwarding status show N/A. Am I missing any configuration? Can I configure LAG on edgeports? Or is there any compatibility issue?
Any help  from you guys will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Vishal

    Hi Dave,
Thank you for your quick response and sorry to have looked at it late. Well, I already resolved the issue and like you pointed out, it was the configuration of the Dell NICs. I had to configure NIC teaming and there was a bug with the Broadcom NIC management software. I had to download this piece of software again and I was then able to configure NIC teaming on it. I initially thought that it was already configured because we got the Dell server "pre-installed with pretty much everything".
Anyway thank you for your assistance. Oh I have a question though if you don't mind clearing my doubt. We have bought 7 of these SG300 Switches and I would like to use all of them
in a hierarchical design as core, distribution and access layer switches because I believe this switch has got all the qualities to be used at all the three layers. We have about 100 users in our company at the moment but expecting growth of about 10-20 employees per year. Would you think a hierarchical network design for a 100 users is a bit of an overkill? Would you think these SG300 switches can handle network traffic at the distribution and core layers? I worked out the average daily traffic is only about 4 Mbps.
Thank you for your valuable guidance.
    Kind regards,
    Vishal

    Hi Chundunsing,
Thank you for the purchase of my switch.
Chundunsing, I love the way you worded your question ; "I am having an issue with LAG configuration on a Cisco SG300 52 switch." ,but seriously you are having a problem with interfacing the dell with my switch.
You have LAG working to the Dell R710 teamed NICs and god knows what NICs or drivers you are using to acheive this.
Now LAG is providing , load balancing between the LAG ports.
Now LAG is providing , link redundancy for connectibity to the Dell R710.
If there is a configuration issue , it sure seems the way you have it configured without LACP is still working. But you have the option when you create a LAP group to enable LACP. You can see this as a tick box in the LAG group.
But might i also install, recently firmware version 1.1.1.8, just came out.
    Please be sure to;
Step 1. update the firmware on the switch and
Step 2. select it as the 'active image.'
Step 3 rebbot the switch to utilize this active image.
If you are having any trouble doing this the admin guide references how to achieve this. for your concenience I have atteched the guide to this posting.
    regards Dave

  • Cisco MDS 9418 switch doubt

    Hi Team,
We have an issue, whether the cisco MDS 9418 switch supports FCIP feature.
We are planning to migrate the data from our old data center over WAN to the EMC VNX storage box in other location.
In our old data center we have 2 FC cisco switches connected to the EMC clariion storage array. Inorder to replicate data from clariion box to EMC VNX box over WAN ,it can be done via FCIP.
I wanted to know if we can use insert the FCIP converters into these MDS 9418 switch or do we need to have separate FCIP converters.
Do we need FCIP converters on both sides for doing replication over FCIP.
For clear understanding please see the attachment.
    Will waiting for your response......
    Regards,
    Pranav.

    Hi,
Since the 9148 does not have IP interfaces, something will be needed to tunnel the FC into IP (FCIP) such as an MDS 9222i, which has both FC interfaces and GigE interfaces and supports FCIP.
    Regards,
    David

  • Does cisco MDS 9000 switch by default set a little higher R_T_TOV?

    Hi, All:
Not sure anyone has done LOS for cisco MDS 9000 switch before. I tried to insert code violation which is equal to 103ms but only see link reset but not NOS/OLS. is it because that Cisco MDS has default higher ? Or can we set R_T_TOV on switch?

Hi Larry - [this|http://lists.apple.com/archives/usb/2008/Oct/msg00021.html] was the only thing I could find about transactions timing out, but since you don't have anything plugged in, it really doesn't apply. Have you tried resetting your SMU?
If that doesn't work, run Disk Utility from your install disc and see what it comes up with. Your suspicion that the MB may be faulty is probably correct, and if you are still within the 90 day warrant period, you should call the repair place and have them replace it yet again.

  • CISCO MDS 9124 SFP Compatibility

We recently received a number of spare SFPs in case of failure of the installed items. After having installed one of these SFPs in our test bed we receive the following notification:
%PORT-5-IF_DOWN_FCOT_VENDOR_NOT_SUPPORTED: %$VSAN 1%$ Interface fc1/1 is down (Error disabled - FCOT vendor not supported)
On checking the online documentation we located the following:
Error Message ETHPORT-5-IF_DOWN_FCOT_VENDOR_NOT_SUPPORTED: Interface [chars] is down (Error disabled - Fcot vendor not supported).
Explanation The inserted small form-factor pluggable (SFP) device is not supported.
Recommended Action Contact customer support for a list of authorized SFP vendors.
Introduced Cisco MDS SAN-OS Release 1.2(2a).
Does anyone know of any workarounds for this? Also does anyone know where we may locate a defnitive list of supported vendors [other than waiting on results from customer support].
    Thanks

    Hi Daniel,
As far as I know, only Cisco SFPs are supported.

  • Steps to upgrade Cisco MDS core switch

    Hello,
We wanted to upgrade our Cisco SAN core switch firmware. Currently we are running below firmware version. We wanted to go to latest version NX OS 5.2 (x) but as per the white paper i need to go to 5.0 (X) and after that i need to upgrade it to 5.2 (x). Can some help me with the steps to follow the upgrade. I have th cook book but just need the main steps to perform the upgrade.
    kickstart: version 4.1(1c)
      system:    version 4.1(1c)

are you using IVR non-NAT, if you are you need to convert to IVR-NAT before you go to 5.2. Other than that you just follow the  normal procedure, look at the release notes for each firmware to make sure your hardware is supported and then do the usual
install all system bootflash:m9x00-xxx.bin kickstart bootflash:m9x00-xxx-kickstart-xx.bin
as a side note, i know you don't mark people replies to your questions as helpful/correct on EMC ECN ..at least do it here to show your appreciation.

  • How to configure VPN with Cisco ASA 5505 behind Actiontec MI424WR

I'm trying to test my Cisco VPN client from my workplace to my home where I have a Cisco ASA 5505 (VPN server) behind the Actiontec MI424WR.  I'm able to Ping the Actiontec external IP.  I also have Port Forwarding for IKE and IPSec configured on the Actiontec, but I cannot establish the VPN connection.
What do I need to configure on the Actiontec to make this work?
Also, when I test this at home, the MI424WR acts as the DHCP server for my laptop and the Cisco outside interface.  At home, I'm able to establish the VPN connection from my laptop to the ASA, allowing me to see a shared drive behind the ASA.  However, at home, I cannot go to the Internet while using the VPN client.
    Thanks for any help.

those are the best sample config's and resources on how to set the FiOS network
Bridging is possible but difficult.  That link will give you great info on it.
Are you a FiOS customer that has phone/internet/tv
or no tv?   or no phone?    You have to be careful on your configuration or you might lose some TV features and functionality, like the Interactive Program Guide, or the VOD or the Widgets.
Sorry the Portforwarding wasn't enough to resolve your issue, I am not sure that it's a Actiontec config you are looking for, from my understanding of Cisco's and FiOS it may be something behind the cisco that is causing an issue.  You may want to reach out to the Cisco admin that manages that, and find out if there are additional ports that are required and then you can come back and configure those ports too.

  • How to configure 2 external monitors with X1 Carbon

I have a brand new X1 Carbon (Generation 1 3444-CYU), and I also have the docking station.  My intention is to be able to have the laptop cover closed, and to use the power switch on the top of the docking station to start (apply power to) the laptop, and to have the output be driven to two DVI monitors.
At this point, I'm able to have the laptp drive the main screen (part of the laptop) and the two external monitors, but I cannot seem to figure out how to use the docking station to "start/boot" the PC, and to have the bootup sequence, and other subsequent display presented on the two DVI screens only.
As I've been looking through the knowledge base, I'm surprised that there are not simply a series of articles that describe the various options for configuring monitors, so I'm forced to post this request.  Can someone help?
    thanks

I see this is an old post, but I figured I'd respond in case someone else is having the same problem.
There is a setting in the BIOS where you can have the X1 power on automatically when you plug it into the dock. I believe the setting is called something to the affect of "Power On When Connected to A/C." This solves the problem you and describing and I have been using with successfully with a dual monitor set up.

  • How to keep a Fabric port always enable in a Cisco MDS 9000 Switch?

    Dear members:
I work in Datacenter automation solutions using most part of time Virtualization softwares.
I'm having an interst problem with a server while it is booting thru SAN using a logical volume stored in a EMC DMX4 array.
We are trying to boot a VMWare ESX 4.1 OS, but when OS tries to change HBA BIOS driver to ESX device driver during boot process, the Server's HBA logged off from MDS Fabric that it is connected, ESX can't boot and I got a ESX standard prompt.
I think that problem is becuase ESX 4.1 is taking too long to load Storage Drivers during boot process and the consequences is HBA logged off from Fabric.
I already tried to change FLOGI parameters in HBA and Topology architecture, but I didn't have success.
If a try to boot a Microsoft OS like Windows 2008, I don't have this behavior, and OS can boot from SAN without any problem.
Please, if anyone have any idea about how to keep fabric port always enabled, let me know. Any idea or help is very welcome.
    Best Regards.
