How to configure Log file generation

Hi,
I am in a migration project. Currently the OS is Unix. After migration it is going to be Windows.
So we want to change the log files being created in Unix to Windows.
Can anyone suggest any settings in SAP for the log file.
Regards,
Gijoy

Hi Gijoy,
can you please reformulate your question for better understanding?
The log location and tracing severity setup mechanism is platform independent.
After migration there's no necessary step(s) to be taken, the logs will be created in the same way on windows as on  unix under your current sap installation folder (e.g. defaultTrace is on unix under /usr/sap/.../j2ee/cluster/server<n>/log , on windows this will be <DRIVE:>\usr\sap\...\j2ee\cluster\server<n>\log)
I hope this answers your question.
Best Regards,
Ervin

  • How to configure log files in SQL 2012?

    I'm installing a SharePoint Solution and using Microsoft SQL 2012 and I have limited knowledge in installing SQL.  I simply run the wizard and create the DB for SharePoint.
    Is there any links/materials available demonstrating how to correctly configure the log files step by step in a specific partition during the SQL installation for SharePoint 2013?
    thanks,

    Hello,
    SQL Server database log files benefit from RAID 1 and RAID 10 configurations. RAID 10 is recommended for both data files and log files.
    To control de grow of transaction log files, please backup them regularly. The following article may explain you in detail why:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175495.aspx
    Monitor the growth of log files using Performance Monitor and the SQLServer:Databases --> Log Growths counter. Adjust the size of log files until Log Growths
    is constantly zero.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to find out logs related to which server, If i have 2 WFE's in the farm. How to configure logs path?

    Hi,
    I got this doubt, when searching logs on the servers. I have 2 WFE's in my farm, I got an error from enduser. So in which WFE server i need to check the logs.
    How to configure logs path. Is it is possible to specify logs path on our own instead of 14 hive folder.
    Badri

    That is a really bad idea, especially with idle disconnects and other unreliability of CIFS.
    You should instead check out the command
    Merge-SPLogFiles which will allow you to combine ULS logs from multiple servers into a single file.
    You can certainly specify your own path, but the path must be available on all servers. For example, if you specified D:\Logs, D:\Logs must exist on all SharePoint servers within the farm.

  • Configure log file transfer to downstream capture daabase!

    Dear all,
    I am setting up bidirectional replication among 2 database server that are Linux based and oracle 11gR1 is the database.
    I am following the document Oracle Streams Administrator Guide, Have completed all the pre-configuration tasks but I have confusion with this step where we have to configure log file transfer to downstream capture database.
    I am unable to understand this from the documentation.
    I mean how do I configure Oracle Net so that the source database can communicate with each other in bi-directional replication?
    Configure authentication at both databases to support the transfer of redo data? How can I do this?
    Third thing is the paramter setting that obviously i can do
    Kindly help me through this step.
    Regards, Imran

    and what about this:
    Configure authentication at both databases to support the transfer of redo data?
    Thanks, ImranFor communication between the two databases, you create streams administrator at both the databases. The strmadmin talk to each other.

    So, if anyone has any idea...
    Thanks in advance

    Does anyone know how or if it is possible to send the stdout and/or stderr to the log4j type of logging? I already capture the stdout and stderr to the flat file. But I would like to timestamp every line to compare and diagnose problems with each application that encounters problems. Each web app is using log4j to their own application log4j log file. When they encounter errors or resource draining problems, I would like to see the container logs and see what was occuring inside the container at around that same time.
    Any ideas?

    A reasonable method would be
    cat /etc/syslog.conf
    .. at least it would show you where syslog send its logs.

  • Exchange 2010 SP3, RU5 - Massive Transaction Log File Generation

    Hey All,
    I am trying to figure out why 1 of our databases is generating 30k Log Files a day! The other one is generating 20K log files a day. The database does not grow in size as the log files are generated, the problem is log file generation.
    I've tried running through some of the various solutions out there, reviewed message tracking logs, rpc client access logs, IIS Logs - all of which show important info, but none of which actually provide the answers.
    I Stopped the following services to see if that would affect the log file generation in any way, and it has not!
    MS Exchange Transport
    Mail Submission
    IIS (Site Stopped in IIS)
    Mailbox Assistants
    Content Indexing Service
    With the above services stopped, I still see dozens (or more) log files generated in under 10 minutes, I also checked mailbox size reports (top 10) and found that several users mailboxes were generating item count increases for one user of
    about 300, size increases for one user of about 150Mb (over the whole day).
    I am not sure what else to check here? Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Robert

    Hmm - this sounds like an device is chewing up the logs.
    If you use log parser studio, are there any stand out devices in terms of the # of hits?
    And for the ExMon was that logged over a period of time?  The default 60 second window normally misses a lof of stuff.  Just curious!

    Rhoerick,
    Thanks for the response. When checking the logs the highest number of hits were the (Source) Load Balancers, Port 25 VIP. The problem i was experience was the following:
    1) I kept expecting the log file generation to drop to an acceptable rate of 10~20 MB Per Minute (Max). We have a large environment and use the exchange sevrers as the mail relays for the hated Nagios monitoring environment
    2) We didn't have our enterprise monitoring system watching SMTP traffic, this is  being resolved.
    3) I needed to look closer at the SMTP transport database counters, logs, log files and focus less on the database log generation, i did do some of that but not enough of that.
    4) My troubleshooting kept getting thrown off due to the monitoring notifications seeming to be sent out in batches (or something similar) stopping the transport service for 10 ~ 15 minutes several times seemed to finally "stop the transactions logs
    from growing at a psychotic rate".
    5) I am re-running my data captures now that i have told the "Nagios Team" to quit killing the exchange servers, with their notifications, sometimes as much as 100+ of the same notifications for the same servers, issues. so far at a quick glance
    the log file generation seems to have dropped by about 30%.
    Question: What would be the best counters to review in order to "Put it all together"? Also note: our Server roles are split, MBX and CAS/HT.

  • Exchange 2010 personal archive database massive log file generation

    Exchange Server 2010 SP3 + Update Rollup 4
    Windows Server 2008 R2, all updates
    VMware ESXi 5.5
    Server config: 2 x Xeon Quad Core 2.20GHz, 16GB RAM
    We recently started using personal archives. I created a database for this purpose ("Archive Mailboxes") on the same datastore as our live mailbox database ("Live Mailboxes"). It works great except that the mailbox maintenance generates
    massive amounts of log files, over 220GB per day on average. I need to know why. The Live Mailbox database generates around 70GB of log files every day. The database sizes are: Live = 159.9GB, Archive = 196.8GB. Everything appears to be working fine, there
    are no Error events related to archiving. There are 10025 MSExchangeMailboxAssistant warning events logged every day. I have moved those mailboxes back-and-forth to temp databases (both Live and Archive mailboxes) and the 10025 events have not stopped so I'm
    reasonably certain there is no corruption. Even if there were it still doesn't make sense to me that over 100 log files are generated every single minute of the day for the Archive store. And it's not that the database isn't being fully backed up; it is, every
    day.
    Do I need to disable the 24x7 option for mailbox maintenance to stop this massive log file generation? Should I disable mailbox maintenance altogether for the Archive store? Should I enable circular logging for the Archive store (would prefer to NOT do this,
    though I am 100% certain we have great backups)? It appears to me that mailbox maintenance on the Live store takes around 12 hours to run so I'm not sure it needs the 24x7 option.
    This is perplexing. Need to find a solution. Backup storage space is being rapidly consumed.

    I'm sure it will be fine for maintenance to run only on weekends so I'll do that.
    We use Veeam B&R Enterprise 7.0.0.833. We do not run incremental backups during the day but probably could if necessary. All this is fine and dandy but it still doesn't explain why this process generates so many logs. There are a lot of posts around
    the internet from people with the same issue so it would be nice to hear something from Microsoft, even if this is expected behavior.
    Thank you for the suggestions!

    #mv $file ${DATA_OUT}/../archive/$FILENAME1.log_`date +"%m%d%y%H%M%S"`
    echo 'Data file archived to archived directory'
    else
    echo 'FTP process is not successful'

    else
    echo 'log file generation failed'
    fi
    its giving syntax error end of file not giving the exact line number , please help me on thsi
    Regards
    Deb

    Thanks for ur reply
    Actually i did a mistake in the code i wrote the following piece of code below
    ret_val=`ftp -n> $file.log <<E
    #ret_val=`ftp -n << !
    so after the tilde symbol it as again taking the '# ' as a special character so it was giving error, so i removed the second line now its working fine.

    Please suggest how to solve this problem,how can i reduce trace and log files,,,,,any configuration or setting is there to configure this...please suggest and explain how can it be done.

    Hi,
    You can control what messages gets logged depending on the severity.
    This can be configured using Log Configurator, check this how you can set severity to different locations.

  • How has access.log file configured in WebLogic server 10.0?

    1.) I am using BEA Weblogic 10.0 and my access.log is not getting updated.
    2.) I also need any information as to how this Webblogic server forms chunks (ex....access00011.log,access00012.log) because i have a software called AWStats which merges all these chunks into 1 single access.log file under its subdirectory.
    3.) I also need information as to how and where the user can specify/ form his own fields which gets displayed in the access.log
    FYI i have 2 servers and i checked under Logging->HTTP->advanced, in both the servers options and configurations are same but in 1 it works fine and access.log is updating but not in the other one.
    Kindly let me know i you have any leads into this issue!
    Thanks,
    Varun

    Hi Ravish,
    Firstly thanks for the reply.
    1.) -----
    What you can do is to set the buffer-size-kb parameter value to "0" in config.xml so that it can start logging once the server starts coming up rather then waiting for the default size which is 8kb to pass.
    Something like below:
    <web-server-log>
    <buffer-size-kb>0</buffer-size-kb>
    <web-server-log>
    For more details check the below link:
    Search for: CR302493
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11035_01/wls100/issues/known_resolved.html
    --- for this issue i had browsed throught the forum before posting but in my conf file i have something like this instead of <buffer-size-kb>0</buffer-size-kb>
    <web-server>
    <web-server-log>
    <number-of-files-limited>false</number-of-files-limited>
    <log-file-format>extended</log-file-format>
    </web-server-log>
    </web-server>
    So how do i go about the path of debugging now??
    2.) -------
    If you do not want rotation of access.log then you can just disable it from the below console path just by putting Rotation type as None
    Server -> <YOUR_SERVER_NAME> -> Logging (tab) -> HTTP (sub-tab) -> Rotation type: None
    ---- for this in both my servers i have the settings like this,
    Rotation type--> By Size
    Rotation File size 5000
    Begin rotation time 00:00
    rotation interval 24
    files to retain 7
    and Log file rotation directory is left blank (to get created in same directory)
    and also Rotate log file on startup is unchecked.
    so??? what do you suggest!?
    3.) ------
    I also need information as to how and where the user can specify/ form his own fields which gets displayed in the access.log
    ---- regarding this, in my main server the access.log is getting updated and after 4.8Mb its creating 5Mb chunks. So, for example if the entire log is of 15 Mb then access.log stops updating at 4.98Mb and accesslog.out0001 and accesslog.out0002 is created with 5Mb each but the latest entry will be stored in accesslog.out0002 file. I hope i didn't complicate this :)

  • Log4j : how to get log file name and directory

    My log4j is working fine. Below is how I define the property file
    log4j.rootCategory=DEBUG, A1
    log4j.appender.A1=org.apache.log4j.RollingFileAppender
    log4j.appender.A1.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout
    log4j.appender.A1.layout.ConversionPattern=%d [%t] %-5p %c - %m%n
    log4j.appender.A1.File=temp/log.txtI want to know, from my java program, how to retrieve my log file "temp/log.txt" because I want to display at console and notify user where to find the log file.
    Thanks

    Or perhaps I did not understand your requirement. Which of the following is it?
    1. Given some Java class, you need to do something with its source code?
    2. Given some file whose path is specified by user input or runtime configuration or compile-time constant, you need to do something with that file?
    3. Neither of the above?
    If 1: Can't do it. Don't need to do it. Don't waste your time trying. Unless you're writing something like a debugger. If so, then if you have to ask this question, you do not have the skills necessary for the broader task.
    If 2: Google for java io tutorial. Study it, try some code, and come back with a more specific question if you're still confused.
    If 3: Explain clearly what you're trying to accomplish and why you think this approach is the right one.

  • How can maintain log file Please help Very Urgent.

    I am developping an application in PDK. From my application I need maintain a log file in the server side. Please help me how can I do this. If you do have links regarding this matter please pass it.

    You might want to use the SAP Logging API. see
    <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/d2/5c830ca67fd842b2e87b0c341c64cd/frameset.htm">Logging and Tracing</a>
    In NWDS include a reference to logging.jar (use variable SAP_LOGGING_LIB_HOME).
    You can then write to the log in this way:
    public class Xyz {
         private static final Location TRACE = Location.getLocation(Xyz.class);
         // It is not nice to set the severity in static code - only for demonstration purposes.
         // For production-ready code this should be done via a log-configuration.xml
         // to allow configuration of the severity at runtime.
              TRACE.setEffectiveSeverity(Severity.ALL);
         public void myMethod() {
              final String METHOD = "myMethod()";
              TRACE.entering(METHOD);
              TRACE.debugT("whatever");
              TRACE.exiting(METHOD);

  • Configure Log File for each web application deployed in weblogic server usi

    Hi All,
    How do I configure Log4J to log separately for each web application? i.e. Assuming, I have a web application "AWeb" and a web application "BWeb". I need a log file to be created for AWeb Separately and BWeb Separately. i.e. All the log information for "AWeb" web application will be stored in AWeb.log and all the "BWeb" web application will be stored in BWeb.log
    Do you have any sample code and configuration details for the above-mentioned requirement?
    Thanks in Advance,
    C R Baradwaj

    You do not need to do anything strange, just use log4j the usual way with the exception that you do not need to init log4j (this is not necesary when using a log4j.xml.)
    A minimal sample of a log4j.xml is
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
    <!DOCTYPE log4j:configuration SYSTEM "log4j.dtd">
    <log4j:configuration xmlns:log4j="http://jakarta.apache.org/log4j/">
    <appender name="ConsoleAppender" class="org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender">
    <layout class="org.apache.log4j.SimpleLayout"/>
    </appender>
    <root>
    <priority value ="debug" />
    <appender-ref ref="ConsoleAppender"/>
    </root>
    </log4j:configuration>
    You just have to be sure that you have different log4j.xml in your classpath for different web applications.

    LG
