How To Configure Multiple Airport Expresses?

I Have a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 wireless router and 2 Apple Airport Expresses.
This Buffalo router is compatible with the Apple Airport Express to be able to use the WDS feature. I have configured one of my Airport Expresses as a WDS Remote Base Station that allows wireless clients on the base station. I also have this one configured for AirTunes.
I want to add an additional Airport Express to extend coverage, what is the best way to configure the second Airport Express? Would it be just an additional "Remote Base Station" or a "Relay Base Station"?
Any information that can be provided (please be as detailed as possible), would be greatly appreciated.

My AX's are setup close to stereo's so they use airtunes.
One in the front room, one in the office, and one in the garage.
Two of them have computers very close to them but the garage does not have a computer unless I take the laptop out there.
Remote Base Station
A Remote Base Station shares the main base stations Internet connection.
Relay Base Station
A Relay Base Station is connected to the main base station and shares it's Internet connection with remote and other relay base stations.

  • How to configure an airport express a1264 with osx 10.9

We have two old airportexpresses- A1264. Bought in 2008. I would like to stream music from my computer to my stereo as I have done before. However I have bought a new Macbook air with OSx 10.9. By reading I have understood that older airports need older airport-programs to configure them. Tried to download a airport-program 5.6.1 from apples home page but my operative system would not accept it? What do I do? Buy new one :-)???

AirPort Utility 6.3.x, which is built into OS X 10.9.x will work just fine with the A1264 Express, assuming that the A1264 is operating correctly.

Anyone has an idea how to connect and configure my Airport express to an internet range extender which is plugged into mains?

You can connect it but with ethernet cable. You can not connect it by wifi to extend the range a second time.
BTW AE is rather sensitive to connect by wifi to non-apple wifi routers.

  • How can I configure an airport express to connect extra speakers to those on my Apple TV?

    Hi,
I'm using a net gear router to play music on speakers connected to my tv via Apple TV. I want to set up another set of speakers upstairs mot play the same music throat the house. Can I connect another set of speakers to the airport express and have all speakers running in harmony? any advice gratefully received!
    Cheers, Dean

You can connect (up to five practically) AirPlay Speakers and stream to them simultaneously from a single iTunes host. Your Apple TV would be one of those AirPlay Speakers.
Each additional AirPlay Speaker would be configured to join the existing wireless network. For additional details on configuring an AirPort Express for AirPlay, please see the following Apple Support article.

  • HT5022 How can I configure an AirPort Express 802.11g on Mac OSX 10.8.5?

I can't configure an Airport Express 802.11g using a MacBook Air with MacOS X 10.8.5 installed.
AirPort Utility 5.6.1 cannot be installed on a computer running OS 10.8.5...
    Help!

As you know you cannot administer the older 802.11g AirPorts from Macs running the latest OS X versions or from an iOS device.
You still have a few options to do so:
Use a Mac running OS X Lion 10.7.2 or lower.
Use a Windows PC running Windows 7 or lower.

  • Mountain Lion - Using multiple Airport Express for music

I've been using Airfoil to play non-iTunes audio to the three Airport Express units in my house, but the audio quality is lacking. I was happy to see that Mountain Lion (I am using 10.8.4 on my Macbook Pro) will stream non-iTunes audio to AE units, but only one at a time.
Does anyone know how to get Mountain Lion to stearm audio to multiple AE units in sync?
I see there is an app called "Airwaves" designed to do this, but users have very mixed experiences. Is there perhaps a better app out there?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry - I led you astray unnecessary in my last posted message. The reference I provided was for setting up a remote base station. That is not applicable to your situation, so please ignore.
In your case, you want to use the Airport Utility to configure each Airport Express so that it "join" (and not "extends") your existing wireless network.
What I suggest you do is:
    1. get each Airport Express into a known default state by doing a factory default reset per these instructions. Hold down the reset button for 10-15 seconds, until you see four green flashes in rapid succession
    2. put all Airport Express devices, and the wireless Mac you are using to configure the Airport Expresses, into the same room as the wireless router you are using
    3. configure one Airport Express at a time, and as I said above use the Airport Utility to configure each Airport Express to "join" the existing wireless network - ie select your Airport Express device as shown in the Airport Utility, click the "Continue" button (not the Manual setup button), and follow the instructions. The name of the wireless network you are joining is the same as the name of the wireless network your existing wireless router is creating. Make sure you also specify the same security protocol (WEP/WPA) and wireless network password as your Mac requires to connect to your existing wireless network.

AirPort Utility is the application that must be used to setup and make any configuration changes to the AirPort Express. I'm not aware of an "App" for this.
If you could borrow a computer from someone there for 30 minutes or maybe use the computer in the lobby, you could download AirPort Utility and reconfigure your Express. To help with setup, use an ethernet cable from the computer to the Express to help AirPort Utility "see" the Express.

  • Need to configure - 2 Airport Expresses, Macbook Pro + iMac G4

Hi All. My problem is I can't get my G4 iMac to work with an Airport Express (connected to the ethernet port as the iMac doesn't have wireless.)
Below (A) is a configuration that works and (B) doesn't.
    Configuration (A)
Airport Express 1(Main) (living room) - Connected to DSL modem + sterio
Airport Express 2 (bedroom) - Connected to USB printer
I can happily play music via airtunes and print wirelessly to the printer from my MacBook Pro.
    Configuration (B)
Same as (A) but an iMac is connected to Airport Express 2 in the bedroom by Ethernet Cable.
The problem seems to be that the way Airport Express 2 is configured means the ethernet port isn't active. When I configure it to activate the port then I lose communication with it (from wireless Mac). The light goes from green to flashing amber. I can no longer see the printer from MacBook Pro.
So the question really is, in order to have Configuration (B) fully working, what setting do I need to set on both airport expresses?
    Many thanks
    MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iMac G4 - 10.4.8

WilH, Welcome to the discussion area!
The Ethernet port on the AirPort Express (AX) is ONLY active when the AX is using WDS to join a wireless network.
You will need to use the directions in KB 107454, AirPort Extreme and Express: Using WDS to create a network from multiple base stations to configure all of your AX. Configure AX1 as a "main base station". Configure AX2 and AX3 as remote base stations.

  • Multiple Airport Express Base Station Set-up

I live in the country and need to re-configure four Airport Express (AE) stations for coverage to multiple buildings. I set this up successfully about two+ years ago. Last week, our place got struck by lightning which took out our modem and main base station (which was an AE). Modem is replaced/working and hooked up to a new AE main base station (additional one I had around) and sending wireless signal. I have been able to set-up one additional unit (AE) as a remote station and it seems to be working fine. However, I cannot get the additional two units to communicate with the wireless network.
    Some additional background information:
    1. all AE units are model A1804 (with software version 6.3)
    2. the "remote" unit has been reconfigured as both a relay and remote in an attempt to communicate with the additional units.
    3. I am configuring the units manually and all appears to go well with a successful update of the unit. However, on restart the unit cannot be found and never joins the network. I end up doing a hard reset and trying various options with no success.
    4. I have been using several of the tips offered on this site, with the main one providing good results for setting up the main base station and one additional AE being: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2422028&tstart=0
    5. I have the main base station in the home office upstairs in a two story house in the SE corner. The second unit is downstairs in the NW corner. The other buildings are NW and W of the house and will connect to the network from the downstairs NW house unit.
Again, I had all four of these working and communicating just fine for over two years. I am pretty sure this system was set-up on an older OS (10.4). I am now using 10.5.8. I am pretty frustrated and would appreciate any input.

That advice should be sufficient. I've had the most trouble configuring a "static WDS" arrangement when I didn't use the exact same network name, encryption type, password, band, and channel settings for each station.

  • Multiple Airport Express issues revisted

I've been trying to set up multiple airport expresses. I want to wirelessly connect to two stereos and stream to both at the same time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
So far I tried the directions below. But after following them, when I was in itunes, it would not acknowledge either AX. When I was making the suggested settings in the Airport tab, as listed below, it asked me for the name of the network. I wasn't sure what to put there though.
I can set up each on its own network, but then itunes can only find one stereo at a time.
    Thanks for you help.
For each AirPort Express Base Station (AX):
    Perform a "factory default" reset
    - (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
    Music tab
    - Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
    - Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
    - iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    - iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
    - Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)
    - Select "Multiple Speakers" from the speaker selection at the bottom of the iTunes window.

You need to have one of the AirPort Express (AX) join the wireless network created by the other one. See KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • Airport Exreme - Airport Express droupout with multiple Airport Express sta

I have multiple airport express's, an iMAc, a Airport extreme router, all software/firmware to current release. If I play on the iMac and one set of remote speakers, no problems, once I add two airport express stations with iTunes, I get the dropouts. Any ideas. I have already got rid of wds, changd channels, tc. to no avail.

I have the same set up and had the same issue and a guy at apple support gave me a tip to try and it worked!. First remove all the expresses from the power outlets keeping your airport extreme running. I also recommend using a different channel say 11. and use ap grapher
    http://www.chimoosoft.com/products/apgrapher/
to see if your network looks like it's running well after you resetup your everything or before you bother doing this. I found my audio gear was really messing with my airports bandwidth and when I moved it to a new spot ap grapher showed I was getting a nice steady 54mbit/sec.
So again unplug the expresses and keep the extreme up and running.
You must first do a reset on the airport express by pushing in the little white button on the bottom with a paper clip for a few seconds, but you should check out how to reset the airport express via apple's web site because there are 2 types of resets one with it plugged in and one with it not. Not sure which is right reset method so check that yourself.
Once you have reset it you want to set the first express to extend your preexisting airport extreme network using the airport setup utility. If you have two expresses you may only need to do this to the last one in the chain but it can't hurt to reset them all form scratch.
Once the first express is up and running you then unplug the airport extreme from it's power outlet. Then you go to set up the 2nd express after you reset it and here lies the trick. You extend the 2nd express off the first express without the extreme involved. Then you plug in the extreme back into the power and bingo you have tricked the express #2 to extend from the first express and they wind up with new ip numbers like 10.0.1 and 10.0.2. Instead of them competing for signal using the same ip address they now have their own individual ip address, it turns it into an extension chain. If that makes sense I don't know what the tech terms are for this but it did cure my issues of dropouts I thought it was odd that they had the same addresses so it makes sense that they should have their own.
Micro wave ovens cause drop outs and so do some wireless phones but you can always check on your signal using AP grapher. I found that when I walk around with my MacBookPro in my house that the expresses really don;t have much of a range so if they are really far apart that could also be an issue. I'm sure the N versions are much better and I am thinking about upgrading.
Hope this helps cause it sure took a long time to type:)

  • AirTunes and multiple Airport Express modules

I was curious if there are plans to support connecting to multiple Airport Express modules? I have two modules in my home and would love to be able to send music to two different places at the same time.
If there is a plan to introduce this option I'd love to know and if I already can I'd love to know how.
    Thanks

I would love to know this as well.
I have just purchased an older home and re-wiring the
house is somewhat out of the question.
I purchased two AirPort Express modules's, but then
found out you can only play to one at a time. I
would love to be able to play one play list in the
basement and another in the living room upstairs
without having to run two iTunes.
Or at least play the same playlist to both at the
    same time?
I too would like to know this. I have an older home and would like the option of playing the same music throughout the house or in just one location.
Even being able to hear what is playing from the
iTunes player would be decent as well.
    Any thoughts?

  • Multiple Airport Express without Airport Extreme

Is it possible to have multiple Airport Expresses on a network without the router being an Airport Extreme? I have a Buffalo router and can't get more than on Airport Express to be recognized. Is this possible?

The Express must be configured to "join a wireless network" to be able to stream iTunes to your stereo. It sounds like you have one device working OK, is that correct?
If you can't get AirPort Utility to "see" your other Express, temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the Express and then open AirPort Utility to see if that helps. You will configure it to "join" your wireless network.
When you have it configured, you can disconnect the ethernet cable and move the Express to the location that you want.

  • How can I use AirPort Express when traveling?

How can I use AirPort Express when traveling?

How can I use AirPort Express when traveling?
Connect the AirPort Express to the Ethernet port in your room.....to be able to create your own private wireless network in your room for multiple devices.
You will still have to pay the hotel Internet charge for one device, if the hotel charges for Internet access.
If the hotel only provides wireless service, then a single AirPort Express will not help you.
However, if you have two AirPort Express devices, then you can use one to "join" the hotel wireless network, then connect the second Express to the first using an Ethernet cable and create your own wireless network for multiple devices in your room.

  • Can't configure old Airport express

    Hi There,
I can't configure an Airport Express because Airport Utility was upgraded. I've found several posts on how to get around this but in each case, the software or automator script download links are either broken or the software/script no longer works.
I already own 4x Apple Wireless devices and am not interested in owning another one!
Is there a way to configure this device on a newer mac (10.7.5)?
    Cheers
    Ben

You must install the older utility.
Try this one and tell us which thing doesn't work.. later versions of lion use the same method as Mountain Lion.. Apple actually blocked it from working.. amazing people!!
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.
