How to configure Time Capsule for Automatic Backup AND HARD DRIVE USE

I tried to configure Time Capsule for back up and as a hard drive. I record music and need to copy the music myself onto an external hard drive for speed, so I want the TC to double as an external hard drive, and do the back up. I want to be able to open the TC as a hard drive, to open my songs from it. Can it do both?

I finally figured it out. I am able to access my TC from the "shared folder." When I click on it, I get the "connection failed message." I failed to notice the login button in the upper right -- user error due to my Windows based education. The button is very subtle. Once I login, I can create folders and add content.
I didn't see a partition option. Where is that? Just curious.
Thanks!

  • Time Capsule can't backup external hard drives connected to it. Got that.

Hello Apple Support Communities! This is my first post. Hope this finds you all well My first year as an Apple user. I bought a 2-Tb TC and am running my first backup to my MacBook as I write this.
Problem statement: TC can't backup external hard drives connected directly to it, but the ones connected to the Macs that are connected wirelessly to it. Duly noted. However, the Spotlight will reindex the hard drives connected to the Mac and that will take hours; the whole backup will take days. Thus, excluding the hard drives at "System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy tab" will probably help reduce the time of backup, or just ejecting them will do too. That itself has not proven effective coz it's still taking forever (50Gb in 2 days, still going).
    Questions:
    1) Do I wait until my first backup to my MacBook's internal hard drive is done before I connect my hard drives to my MacBook and attempt another backup? If yes, how do I go about the excessive time Spotlight reindexing takes if I intend to backup my hard drives connected to my MacBook?
    2) Is there any other way of speeding up the first-time backup?
*Note: All versions of OS and firmwares are up-to-date. TC is connected to an external wireless router. TC is intended to be used as backup device and / or file server only.

How do I backup the externel hard drives connected to my MB. I was under the impression that that has already been done, because I've read it somewhere in a discussion that said it's done automatically unless I exclude it from a backup, which I didn't. So it's supposed to backup the external hard drivestoo because I had them connected to my MB the entire time during the backups.
By default an external drive is excluded.. the list is odd.. if I plug a drive into the mac.. it immediately is listed as excluded.
This is not the list of included.. this is the list of excluded.. remove it from the excluded list to include it.
It is kind of reverse polish notation in backups.
If I want to enter the Time Machine, should I enter it with the TM turned on or off?
Not sure what the question means. If you use the star wars display and want to recover files then use TM off.. but read up pondini.. how to do restore etc.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
15A in particular on the how to use TM.
When do I uplug the ethernet and use the wireless connection instead?
Once you have finished the main backup you can go back to wireless. The incremental backups are mostly very small.

  • How to setup Time Capsule for wireless backup only

I have a new Time Capsule that I want to set up for wireless backups of both my Macbook Air (with Time Machine) and a Windows Vista laptop. I have an existing home wireless network with my Att/Uverse tv and internet service. I do not want to disturb that network/internet setup.
How do I set up the time capsule to use it for wireless backup only? When I start the Airport utility setup, the first thing it asks is do I want to 1) set up new network, 2) replace existing router, or 3) join existing network.

Thanks. That got me the green light and a message that everything was set up properly. It started it's first Time Machine backup and everything looked good for a while. But now I have a new problem.
The backup failed twice. The first time it had a message that it could no longer find the time capsule, so I had to reset it and go thru the setup procedures again. Started backup again overnight, and this morning it tells me that it failed again. But this time I still have my green light, and the message is "a network problem may have interfered with the backup.
I don't know what else to do with the setup to get it to work. Right now it has started backing up again on its own, so I'll leave it going one more time. (I should tell you that all of this is occurring on my Mac. I have not even started setting it up on the Vista machine. I want to make sure it works on the Mac first). Any advice from anyone who had the same problems with setup would be appreciated.

  • How to configure Time Capsule for setup of an IP camera?

First, a summary of my gear:  Internet service provider = Verizon FIOS.  FIOS uses an ActionTec Router (Model MI424WR).  The ActionTec does the routing, assignment of private IP addresses and NAT.  The ActionTec has wireless capability but I have DISABLED the wireless piece of ActionTec.  I use Time Capsule (4rth generation, 802.11n, Version 7.6) for my wireless LAN.  The Time Capsule is hardwired to the ActionTec via Ethernet.
My objective is to setup a Foscam IP camera (Model FI8918), connected wirelessly with Time Capsule, so that I can control the Foscam from both inside and outside of my wireless LAN from my iPhone running a Foscam app.  If anyone has managed to get an IP camera up and running in the scenario described above, I would appreciate any tips and info, especially when it comes to port forwarding and connection sharing.  For example, do I need to setup port forwarding on both the ActionTec and Time Capsule?  What type of connection sharing?  Right now, the Time Capsule is in bridge mode.

I have yet to setup my cameras, but I can tell you that since the Time Capsule is configured in Bridge Mode....and that is the correct setting for it when it is connected to the Actiontec Gateway/Router.....that any port forwarding or other configuration must take place within the Actiontec router.
In Bridge Mode, the Time Capsule is acting as a simple pass through device even though it is functioning as a wireless access point.
Everything on the network gets an IP address from the Actiontec device, so that is where you will need to concentrate with the configuration of the cameras.
It's unlikely that an Actiontec expert is here on an Apple support forum, but you never know.  Might be a good idea to also post in an Actiontec support forum.

  • How to configure Time Capsule to add another 2GB of storage via USB External Hard Drive?

Hi All, I've recently added an external 2GB hard drive via USB to my 1GB Time Capsule as I had reached capacity.  Time Capsule recognises the new 2GB hard drive so I know I have got that at least that bit right! But... I cant seem to figure out how to configure TC to add the extra 2GB to the current 1GB it already has for a total of 3GB?  Under 'Select Disk' I can select either one or the other but I can't find a way to 'merge' them both. So a couple of questions:
    - Is this even possible?
    - If I have to keep them seperate, is there way to select different folders to back up to the different drives? E.g. back up all my music files to one of disk and all my movie files to another?  I tried it but is seems like the options apply to time capsule regardless of the drive I select.
Any assistance you can provide would be most appreciated.
    Regards, Justin

    - Is this even possible?
Sorry, but no. You will not be able to combine the drives as one as the Time Capsule does not offer any type of RAID function.

Not directly with Time Machine (TM). You would need another backup solution, and then, run two separate backups (with the specific folders of interest); one on each HDD.

  • Can you use time capsule for your mac and have readynas backup your pc's on the same network

Can you use time capsule for your mac and use readynas to back up your pc's on the same network

Sure, that is trivial setup.. they both have different names and IP addresses.
You should be able to use ReadyNas for TM backup but you should check the latest state of play for that.

  • How do i set my time capsule as a wireless external hard drive?

it is currently doing regular automatic back-ups of our system, but we want to set it as our hard drive as well.

If Time Machine backups are occurring correctly, then you already have the Time Capsule set up as a hard drive on your network.
Although not necessarily recommended, that means that you can manually drag/drop or copy/paste data directly to the Time Capsule disk.
Are you asking how to do this, or how to locate the drive?  Please clarify.

  • I want to use my Time Capsule as a central 'hub/hard-drive' in order to keep all my working files in one place. I then plan to use my laptops/desktops as peripheral devices for editing and creation of these files. Is it possible? Create a personal cloud?

I want to use my Time Capsule as a central 'hub/hard-drive' in order to keep all my working files in one place. I then plan to use my laptops/desktops as peripheral devices for editing and creation of these files. Is it possible? To create a personal cloud?
Can someone advise as to whether i can do the following:
Future Internet connection -------------------TIME CAPSULE (containing all files) -------------- Backed up on the WD 2T Hard-drive I have
(not connected yet)                                         I                                                          (*connected to timecapsule physically)
                                                                                                            I
                    I                                         I                                                I                                                              I                                                I
Macbook Pro                             iMac                                       HP (PC)                                             OLD Macbook Pro                         iPhone
(used for remote working)       (Used for home working)     (used for heavy CAD and rendering)    (not being used for anything at the moment)        (& iPods)
I am looking to have all my files in one place as i am hopelessly disorganised. I know the online clouds are a good solution (used Dropbox at work and uni for 3 years) however i am wanting to create my own 'dropbox/icloud' at home. So whenever i get back home with my laptop, any work i have been working on whilst out that day is updated to the timecapsule, and then ultimately as i turn on the other devices, they update to those newer versions of the files. Please tell me that the 3TB time capsule i have can do this, otherwise it feels rather overpriced as a wireless storage device?
Another note (to those in the know) If i am to be working on large files (REVIT/SOLIDWORKS/KEYSHOT/CREO/AUTOCAD) - is the timecapsule connection good enough to support editing and updating these files?
I know i may be asking a question that many have before, but as a bit of a technical novice I wanted a clear-cut answer to my specific circumstances. Your help is greatly appreciated.
(*can i use this WD hard-drive that is connected to the Time Capsule as a back up? so that the time machine back-ups/any back ups are also backed up onto this one? can the WD be a backup for the TC?)
    Kind Regards
    Joe

The diagram was supposed to look more like this......
Internet ---------TIME CAPSULE(containing all files) --------WD 2T Harddrive
                                                I
         I                           I                          I                            I                                   I

    Sorry!

Hello friends.. I have a similar question, in that I would like to purchase the 2TB TC for use as a NAS device, in addition to taking advantage of the Air Port extreme.. Then I could dump my Linksys router.
I was originally looking at a Synology NAS solution, but the TC seems like it can meet my needs.
I have a Synology NAS as well as the Time Capsule.  If you look at the 3.2 beta program, the Synology actually attempts to replicate TC functionality in that you can use it with Time Machine on your Mac.
I must say, Airport on the TC is definitely a nice feature!
    Nickles96 wrote:
In addition to the obvious feature of the backup, can I indeed also use the TC as a NAS drive to access from remote locations (example from the office)?
I'm surprised more people aren't using the TC as a dedicated NAS deviced.. I've searched high and low on forums around the web, and don't seem to see many people trying to use it as I've outlined.
I can't see why this wouldn't fufill my needs, and take the place of a separate NAS solution (like the Synology, or iOmega, Seagate, etc....)
Has anyone used this TC as such?
Yes, you can do this and it's something I've been trying to do, but I'm currently having issues.  I have another thread stating I consistently get "connection failed" messages.  I'm basically storing my music/photo/video files on the TC and keeping my Mac hard drive fairly lean.  In terms of NAS functionality, the TC is very basic.  Synology/QNAP and others have a lot more features so don't rule them out.

  • Can you use the apple time capsule as just a wireless hard drive without using it as a router

Can i use the apple time capsule as just a wireless hard drive without using  a router

You can, but this type of configuration is not recommended or supported by Apple.
Two cautions if you want to try this:
    1)  The Time Capsule has to be configured to "Join" your existing wireless network in this type of setup...and to do that, you must know the exact type of wireless security that your network is using.
    2)  Backups are going to take twice as long. The wireless signal must travel from your computer to the wireless router and then from the wireless router back to the Time Capsule.  Two "hops"......even if the computer is located close to the Time Capsule.
If you want to try this, we can tell you how....but with no guarantees on your results....since this is not officially supported.

  • Is it possible to sync time capsule data to a external hard drive

Is it possible to sync time capsule data to a external hard drive connected to time capsule via usb. (as an precaution just incase time capsule fails)
    Thanks

Yes, if the USB drive has been previously formatted correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
    Click the Disks icon
Click the Disks tab below the icon
    Click Archive
Allow plenty of time for the copy process to occur. You will not be able to make Time Machine backups from your Mac until the Archive process has completed.

  • Can I use Time Capsule 1TB as an external hard drive tos tore my music library(but with cable connection, not WI-FI)

Can I use my Time Capsule 1TB as an external hard drive to store my music library but with a cable connection(Ethernet or USB) and not Wi-Fi.

    Yes, with the following warnings.
    1. A 1TB TC is a Gen3 or earlier and can die at a moments notice.. So backup is essential.
    2. A Gen1 or 2 is slow.. even over ethernet they were processor bound and so transfer speeds are not great.. a USB2 plugged into the computer will be faster. Gen3 is about 50% better as the processor was upgraded by 50% speed.
    3. TC has no built in backup.. TM cannot backup network drives.
    4. TC is designed to spin up slowly and spin down quickly.. you will have issues with itunes constantly losing the library.
    5. You cannot use USB to the TC.. it is a network drive. If you want to use USB directly on the computer buy a USB drive.. but buy as fast a drive as your Mac supports.. Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2
USB3 is cheap and very good.. but the port is only from 2012 so check your Mac specs.
Thunderbolt whilst being super fantastic and around since 2011, has a bank account clearing price although there are Thunderbolt to esata converters.. for around $160. esata falls between usb3 and fw800.
FW800 from WD is no better than USB2 but other brands it can be twice the speed of usb2.
USB2 is the worst. But still faster than a TC.

  • I have a macbook air and need additional storage should i consider a time capsule or a simple external hard drive?

I have a macbook air and need additional storage should i consider a time capsule or a simple external hard drive?

If you move live files (files you don't want to lose) to an external drive, you need to back them up.  Any files not backed up are at risk of loss.  Hard drives and SSDs can fail at any time.  It is hard to backup a Time Capsule so a TC should be used only as a backup device.
Do you have a Time Machine backup now?  If so, and if it is large enough, you can backup your internal and external disk to it using Time Machine.  If not, you all need to purchase an external drive or TC as your backup device.  (I recommend an external hard drive for backup instead of a TC.)  Ideally the backup drive should be twice the size of what you are backing up but 50% larger will work so if you have an external 1 TB disk and an internal 250 GB SSD then a 2 TB backup disk will work well.
By default, Time Machine will not backup the external disk.  You need to remove it from the exclusions list:
To have Time Machine backup your system disk and your external offload disk up onto your Time Machine disk:
 > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options… > Remove the offload HD name from the exclusions list.

  • Can apple time capsule act as a wireless hard drive storage by Samsung smart tv?

Can apple time capsule act as a wireless hard drive storage by Samsung smart tv? Samsung smart tv is connected to apple time capsule through wireless  as a modem at the moment

If you look on the right side there pops up similar questions.. which works better than search btw..
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16432256#16432256
The Samsung.. may not be able to see the Time Capsule hard disk..
because it does not contain any files it can read.
because it is not conformed to standard SMB file system.. the TC name is often illegal.. remove all spaces and special characters and keep it short.
Same for wireless name and all passwords.
There is no media player in the TC so it is useless for your TV even if it can see the hard drive .. the TC is a dumb backup device.

  • Will time capsule back up an external hard drive

Will time capsule back up an external hard drive?

Time Machine will backup the drive to the Time Capsule if it is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and it is connected directly to your Mac by USB or FireWire....and it is not "excluded" from backups in Time Machine Options.
