How to configure WRT350N as a router in a network wih a DSL modem/router

Hi,
I'll really appreciate if somebody please could give me some help.
The problem is that I have a Dlink DSL-2640B modem/router AND a Linksys WRT350N router, what I want to do is how to configure them so they both are in the same network, and the WRT350N has access to internet and the computers connected to the DSL-2640B.
Is that possible?....OR...the other option I was thinking was leave the DSL-2640B as a modem only, and have the WRT350 make all the routing wired and wireless.
I'll really appreciate your comments.
Regards.

As per my knowledge it is better to use the wireless router to provide connection to wired & wireless computers. Leave the DSL2640B as a modem, connected to internet port on wireless router.

  • Best DSL modem/router?

I'm sure this question has been asked but how recently, I wouldn't know. We have a D-Link DSL modem/router sent to us by Verizon in 2010. My desktop Mac is connected via Ethernet to the modem. Our other devices use Internet via WiFi. Verizon can sell us a new basic modem, of course. But I'd like one that has a stronger WiFi signal. Can anyone suggest a specific brand and model that will work with our DSL and emit a stronger signal? Thank you!

get your own router/wap and connect it to the modem.

  • How to setup 2 AXs in ethernet series from an AT&T DSL modem

I want to expand my exisitng ethernet network (AT&T DSL modem -> Ethernet Cat6 -> AX -> WiFi).  My home is concrete block ranch, so one AX doesn't cover the whole house.
I am running the latest version of ML on a 1TB, 16GB RAM, MBP 9.1 (non-retina display). Maximum hardware running off Wi-Fi is: 2 MBPs, 1 PC, 3 iPads, 4 iPhones.  All hardware is running latest updates.
I wired the house with Cat6 ethernet with 4 RJ-45 LAN access jacks.
    The proposed new configuration is:
    ATT 2010-02 DSL Modem -> Ethernet Cat6 -> AX1 -> 5-port gigabit switch --> Ethernet1 Cat6 -> AX2 -> WiFi
                                                                                                           |
                                                                                                           |-> Ethernet2 Cat6 -> TV Internet connection
                                                                                                           |
                                                                                                           |-> Ethernet3 Cat6 -> open LAN connection (for PC, etc)
                                                                                                           |
                                                                                                           |-> Ethernet4 Cat6 -> open LAN connection (for PC, etc)
                                                                                                           |
                                                                                                            |-> Ethernet5 Cat6 -> MBP 9.1
    Where:
                  AX1 = Airport Express MC414LL/A, model A1392, simultaneous dual-band 802.11n WiFi
                  AX2 = Airport Express MB321LL/A, model A1264
I assume both AXs are setup in "bridge mode" & "Create a new network", but I don't know where to go from their.  I have read several posts, but it is not clear what to do when the AXs are different generations and connected serially.  One AX setup I tried turned the Internet light on the modem red.  I had to reset the modem and router to get back to square one.  Where do i go next?

Note: I am assuming that your DSL modem is just a mode and NOT a combination modem/router or gateway device.
If that's the case, then AX1 would have both NAT & DHCP services enabled (its default) and AX2 would be in bridge mode. If, on the other hand, the DSL modem is a gateway, then both AXs would be configured as bridges.
Regardless, both AXs would "Create a network" and both would use the same Network Name, Wireless Security Type and Password. In essesence you would have a basic roaming network.

  • WiFi Problems w/ OS X 10.4.11 and Speedport W 502V DSL Modem/Router

We just moved to Germany again, so went to Deutsche Telekom (DT) for Internet/phone access. They sold us a Speedport W 502V DSL Modem/Router with manuals--all in German, as DT does (DT offers NO support in English; some would argue they offer no customer support at all).
Babelfish and I managed to configure a late-model eMac, G4 PowerBook and two iPhones with the DSL router, with pretty good success (sometimes we have intermittent Internet connectivity). Then our household goods were delivered and we unpacked and set up the G4 dual-GHz tower. So...the G4's Airport (not Airport Extreme) "sees" the WLAN and the https://speedport.ip site "sees" the IP address of the G4, but the G4 can't join the network, no matter what I try. It's to the point that I think it's something painfully obvious that I'm missing and I must be too far in the weeds...so now I need fresh eyes on the problem.
I have no computer connected to the Speedport, and wouldn't have thought that was the problem because the other non-physically-connected computers are using the WLAN network. Thanks for any help!

    hi kathryn
did it have to be the Telekom, by all means??
anyway, first of all a link to a video where a german comedian writes a letter to steve jobs demanding he chose any carrier but the DTAG for the iPhone distribution in germany - really funny!

OK, I´m currently downloading the speedport manual from their website and will look through it, in order to see if there´s something in there..
as a first guess I´d try looking at the wireless prefs of that speedport box. I guess it supports by default 802.11a/b/g, whereas the G4 only does 802.11b (the "normal" airport). Try selecting only the 802.11b portion from the speedport (that makes networking somewhat slower for airport express computers, but shoudn´t be a problem since it´s still at least as fast as basic DSL service (11MBit vs 2 or 6 MBit)
    cheers

  • Can Westell 327W DSL modem/router receive wireless signal?

I have a spare Westell 327W wired/wireless DSL modem/router. I need a wireless access point for a G4 Power Mac away from an Apple Extreme. I knew how to make the Westell 327W in a bridge mode. Is there a way to make 327W communicate wirelessly with a FIOs modem/router?
    Thank you very much.
    Robert

Hmmm, perhaps something like this with a USB extension cord would be a solution, they have better Range even without an extension than Airport cards ime...

  • DSL modem/router needs to be just a modem to take advantage of TC?

I just bought a time capsule and was finally able to set it up to back up my MacBook Pro. I think I will be very happy with the product. I am new to the support side of the Apple website and was hoping somebody could help me out with a question. I would like to use the time capsule as a router but since I have a combined modem/router From my DSL Verizon Internet connection, AppleCare said I could not use it as two different routers or there would be problems. I was told that I needed to call Verizon to find out how I turn off the router capability/portion of the combined modem. Does this make sense to anyone? Does anyone have any good ideas on how I can accomplish this easily? The device appears to be a ActionTec Verizon brand modem model number MI424-WR rev D

I was told that if the time capsule is in bridge mode, it can only backup up one computer. Is that accurate?
This information is not correct. A Time Capsule in Bridge Mode will allow multiple Macs to backup, with the practical limit being about 5 or 6 Macs.
I have 3 Macs backing up regularly to a TC in Bridge Mode, and there have been no error or delay messages with the setup.

  • Airport Expess with DSL Modem Router

I had a DSL Modem Router with 3 computers plugged into it via ethernet and was working fine. I then replaced one of my computers with a laptop so bought an AE and plugged it into an ethernet port on the DSL modem router. It worked fine for about 4 days then all three computers internet connections went down. I have got the two desktops working again with the AE disconnected but am worried that if i connect the AE again the same thing will happen. Is there any way that i can avoid this from happening? is this because i am doubling up the routing if you know what i mean?
    MacBook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    First welcome to the discussions,
This isn't that uncommon, many of us expieriance drops in service and have to reset our systems.
There could be any number of reasons that cause this from a Power Spike to surges from power company, to storms from wind and lighting.
If you are lucky nothing gets fried and a simple reset will take care of the problem. Other times it can fry about any component and sometimes it's hard to find exqactly what is fried. If you are able to reset and get everything up and running again I wouldn't worry to much, I would consider a Battery Back-up to add to your Network to save your equipment though.
    Cheers and Good Luck.

  • DSL Modem/Router Upgrade

I am tired of my modem/router dropping connection when playing my Xbox for awhile. It kicks me out of games and parties. I am considering Netgear's new NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Wi-Fi VDSL/ADSL Modem Router (D7000-100NAS)to replace my existing modem/router as it seems to be more powerful and better suited for gaming. Has anyone used this new Modem/Router and would ATT support it?

Hmm, I think that the gateway might just be defective if it's just rebooting randomly on its own. Make sure you try different outlets to rule out faulty electrical wiring. If the gateway is on the floor and it's carpeted, try moving it to a different surface.
I see that you mention you have a 7550, because of that, you SHOULD be able to use the D7000 with your service in replacement of your 7550 and WNDR4300. Just make sure you purchase it from somewhere with a good return policy in the case that something goes wrong.
When installing a new device, make sure you have your AT&T username and password ready if asked during device PPPoE setup.
Just remember that when using a non-AT&T supplied gateway, you aren't guaranteed to receive support from them for certain things. You must be prepared to instead contact NETGEAR.

  • DSL Modem / Router for Airport Extreme / Express

Please can anyone advise re the best DSL Modem / Router to use with an Airport Extreme and Express.
I am in the UK with BT Broadband. I currently have a Netgear DG834G which has been great but seems to need a lot of re-setting recently and has been dropping the connection. I've checked our line with the provider and that seems to be OK. The Netgear DG834G is currently wired via CAT5 to my Airport Extreme which is then also wired to an Airport Express to extend the network.
We are in a rural area so don't have particularly fast Broadband speeds (max tends to be around 4MBps).
As I'm using the Airport Express / Airport Extreme for my WiFi I don't necessarily need a modem / router with wireless or anything that has bells and whistles or can make me a decaf macchiato...I just want something this is bomb-proof and super reliable.
I've looked at various forums and am just getting confusing stuff re what works and what doesn't.
We are due to get fibre-broadband in our area next year - very happy to have to get a new router then for that if needed. The important thing for me is to have a decent set-up for now.
    Many thanks! Eddy
Using Macbook Pro and iMac on 10.9.5

You don't need a modem/router since the AirPort Extreme is a router.
I don't know what the best modem might be....that would involve testing hundreds of products, and even if we could come up with a "best" modem for the AirPorts, it would likely not be the "best" working the BT connection, or BT would not support the product......,but you might want to take a look at the Draytek Vigor 120 modem, and then check with both the Draytek support folks and the BT support folks to make sure that the modem will be compatible with your service.

If you are due to get a fibre connection in the future, then you will have to start over again modem wise at that time.

  • How to set up TimeCapsule (4th) to create own private (wired) network behind Airport Express (5th) that is set up to join existing wifi-network of fritz adsl modem/router?

I work in an office building with free Wifi to connect to the Internet. I want to be able to use this internetconnection, but at the same time I want to shield of my own wired network.
    I've made the following configuration:
    - fritz adsl modem / router
    - Airport Extreme (5th gen) set up to join existing wireless network (green light, works)
    - Lan-cable from lan-port AE to wan-port TC (4th gen)
    - Lan-cable from TC to Mac
    - Lan-cable from TC to Printer
When I set my TC (network-settings) in bridge-mode everything works fine, but my Mac and Printer get an IP-address from the fritz modem / router and are visible to others.
I tried to set TC in NAT/DHCP-mode, but then I get the error message that I should set a static IP-adress for TC. When I set TC in DHCP-mode, it looses connection to the AE. I'm not sure what to do now. Does anyone know how to set up my TC and create my own private network and still be able to get on the internet?

    Hajenius wrote:
Is there a better alternative? I'd rather not want to reset my TC every day.
You are using free internet.. so there is a price to pay.. that is convenience and non-ideal network setup.
The better alternative is to pay for your own connection. Then you are completely free of the possibility of others in the bullding seeing your connection. (as long as you secure the wireless).
But I think you are probably over worrying about public wifi.. if it is setup right.. ask the building admins.. it should be setup so each user cannot see another users connection. This is typical for most wifi setup and simply means you can see internet connection but nobody else on the connection. ie other wireless users.
Having a router with NAT makes it then more secure again and allows clients on your own network to interact with each other. But you can setup wireless to the free wifi for every client.. (depending on how many IP you are allowed).. and run a secondary network without internet access. This is easy for desktop etc where you have a wireless and a wired connection but less convenient for mobile devices.. unless you use a cloud connection and each client can link and share via that.
Have I made the explanation worse??
Think of it this way.. if you had 3 laptops.. all 3 could connect to the internet from the building wifi.. but they cannot talk to each other or share resources in local office. You can put resources out in the cloud, that can be shared.. but that adds traffic and most free services are not fast.
Now you can also plug all three into Time Capsule by ethernet.. and share local resources. Files, printers backup etc. This network is not connected to the internet at all. Each laptop has internet via free wifi and local connection.
For devices like iphones that have no ethernet or other method.. you could use local wireless and public wireless.. but in turns.. still the only advantage is less issues with double NAT.. if that causes problems.. then this is an alternative.

  • How can I set up an Airport Extreme as a router, in conjunction with my AT&T modem/router?

I am trying to set up an Airport Extreme as my router, and I am currently using an AT&T modem/router combo. I am wondering what would be the easiest way to do this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the ATT modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme. This cable must remain in place permanently.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility on your Mac
    Click on Other WiFi Devices
    Click on AirPort Extreme xxxxx
The utility will take a moment to analyze the connection, then a screen similar to this will appear with your AirPort Extreme instead of an AirPort Express
Type in a short simple name that you want to use for the wireless network
Type in a device name for the AirPort Extreme
Enter a password that will be used for both the AirPort Extreme and wireless network
    Verify the password
    Click Next
The utility will setup everything for you. When the message of Setup Complete appears, click Done and close AirPort Utility.
The AirPort Extreme wireless network is now available.

  • Install RVS4000 with DSL modem / router combo?

I'm trying to install a RVS4000 VPN router in our small office.  My problem is that AT&T has installed a Netopia 3347-02 DSL combination Modem / router.  So I can't connect the RVS4000 directly to a dsl modem, the only access I have is on the Lan side of the Netopia.  When I tried to set the WAN side of the RVS4000 to the same subnet as our Lan, it wouldn't let me do that.  I tried setting the Lan side of the Netopia and the Wan side of the RVS4000 to (the same) slightly different subnet, but that didn't work either.  The only way I can get internet access going through both devices is to connect the Lan side of the Netopia to the Lan side of the RVS4000, but that bypasses the VPN, correct?  The reason I bought the RVS4000 is for the VPN.  Is there a way to configure the RVS4000 in this situation, or do I need to get a plain old DSL modem without a built in router?
    Thanks, Scott

    Scott,
You should not need to get another device to use the VPN functions of the RVS4000.  To setup the equipment you have, you just need to place the Netopia DSL router into "bridge" mode.  This will then allow you to connect the DSL router to WAN (internet) port on your RVS4000.  Once in bridge mode, your WAN port on the RVS4000 will receive its IP address from AT&T, which will then take over all routing functions, and enable you to use the VPN feature of this router.
If your DSL provider is using PPPoE, you will need to select "PPPoE" on the WAN setup page of the RVS4000, then enter the username and password into the RVS4000 so that it can authenticate and get an IP address from AT&T.
To place the Netopia DSL router into "bridge" mode, I am including a link to one of their user guides.  The section for placing it in bridge mode starts on page 107.

  • Route two separate networks via RJ45 on the router E900. is it possible?

Good day! I wonder if the E900 router can be used to route two separate networks. Not via wifi, but via RJ45. eg 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1 If possible, I would like to know how? I thank the attention.

You can add Static routes and disable NAT. This model of router isn't designed for that purpose. The LRT224 is the router you want for this purpose if lower cost is required.
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.

  • Link an 871 router/switch wirelessly to an ISP-provided DSL modem//router?

Hi, Upstairs we have a 20-Mbps ISP-provided DSL wireless modem/router, and one floor lower, in basement, I would like to install a refurbished 871 Cisco router, without adding a separate Internet connection. I would like the 871 to connect wirelessly to the DSL router.  To the 871 I would wirelessly connect 2 workstations, one of which will host 3-4 virtual machines. The 2 main reasons for this weird arrangement are so my virtual machines and virtual switch do not interfere with upstairs devices connected to the DSL router, and so I can practice Cisco router//switch configuration downstairs where I reside, without added expense of a separate Internet connection.   Would I need a separate repeater between the two routers?   Humbly requesting any other feedback.
    Jeff

To have all routers using the same Network Name and wireless password, you would have to configure them for a roaming network. This would require that the Extreme and Express connect individually back to the Pirelli router via an Ethernet connection.

  • Trouble using Airport Express Base Station with DSL modem, Router and Hub

About 18 months ago, I had an Airport (802.11b) with WAN & LAN ports and modem hooked up to support two laptops, a Titanium Powerbook G4/600 and G3/400. The setup went from DSL modem -> Linksys router -> to Airport -> Hub (which had desktop and ethernet laser printer plugged in). The network worked fine.
Then, I got a G4 iBook to replace G3/400. Wanted to get 802.11g to support “g” Airport card in iBook. Got a Linksys 802.11g Wi-Fi with 4-port router for $50. Hooked it up directly with DSL modem. (Couldn’t get it to send out to hub). Hooked the desktop and ethernet laser printer into Linksys Wi-Fi/router. The only way I could use the printer was by having it be a shared printer from the desktop. This was often problematic.
Two months ago, I got a refurbished Airport Extreme Base Station. I can’t get the AEBS to interface directly with the DSL modem, so I hooked it up as follows:
DSL modem -> Linksys router -> to AEBS -> Hub. I plugged my Epson 820 (USB) into the AEBS and can see it to print to.
I have a static IP. That info is entered into Linksys router. Router set as Gateway, with DHCP enabled. AEBS is set to Connect using Ethernet, Configure using DHCP. Network setting: Distribute IP Addresses is unchecked.
    Here’s my issue:
I can’t see the ethernet laser printer. It will occasionally flash available, but is gone in less than a minute. The printer is HP 2100 series.
Sometimes I can connect to the desktop G4 tower; most times I can’t.
I have checked and double-checked the cables.
Both the printer and desktop are connected to the Hub.
What can I do so that I can see the HP 2100 series printer and the G4 tower?

    Don,
Thanks for the suggestions. Glutton for punishment that I am, I tried this again, “just for grins.“ The six other times I tried this, I couldn’t get the AEBS to “see” the Internet. And lo, this time it worked. Here’s the setup now:
DSL modem -> AEBS -> 4-port hub (which is connected to G4 tower and HP 2100 Ethernet printer). My USB Epson is connected to the AEBS, and I can print from the laptops. AEBS is set up: manual IP info, Network: distribute IP address; share a single IP using DHCP.
When I still couldn’t see the desktop G4 and the Ethernet HP 2100 connected via the hub (not), I got a flash. I had swapped out the cable a number of times to no avail. Then I realized, the hub is old and all the cables I was using are the new CAT5s. I dug out an old four-wire with RJ45 connectors that my husband made years ago (probably a cross-over cable). It was quite an effort as the cable is 30 ft. long and wrapped around the perimeter of the office behind desks and file cabinets, entwined with all the other wires. But I plugged it in and, Shazam! I am WORKING!
And, Don, thanks to you, I have eliminated the router from my gaggle of electronic boxes.
