How to connect a macbook to an external projector?

I would like to connect my macbook to my school's projector for presentation and it seems the projector cable at school doesn't fit into any slot in my macbook.
What kind of cable do I need? I remember the cable at school is able to plug into any PC, and the slot looks like a trapezium with a lot of little holes. Is that the VGA?
I am using a white macbook, 2.4, bought in september 2008.
thank you very much

It took a while for me to figure that out too when I switched to a mac xP
Here's what you need:
1) MiniDVI-VGA Cable : which can be found at the apple store (http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9320G/A?mco=MTIxODk3Mw)
It plugs into the port to the left of the FireWire port and allows you to use a PC (VGA) video cable with your macbook.
2) The VGA (trapezium) cable if you don't already have one dangling off your projector
3) You'll have to adjust some settings in System Preferences > Displays to get the projector to display your screen correctly.
happy presenting :]

    Hello,
I'd like to know how to connect my MacBook to a iPod Hi-Fi.
    Thank you!

You have two choices. You can use a 3.5mm to 3.5mm stereo cable or for best results use a digital audio cable between them.
Check this link out for the MacBook: External Ports and Connectors.

  • How to connect my macbook pro to a computer-to-computer network?

how to connect my macbook pro to a computer-to-computer network?  My home computer is a Window 8 OS.  Thx.

The easiest way, and it may work from scratch, is to share the folders/drives you want access to on your pc, noticing what are the default parameters (eg "workgroup" etc.).
Then, you can connect your mac directly by ethernet, for instance, and, in Finder, go to > Network, you should see the folders/drives. You may be asked to provide user/password.
Don't get confused by regular/crossed ethernet cable, as mac can cross by software, so a regular cable will be ok.
Anyway, either you isd modem has the ability to connect several devices (multiple ethernet sockets, or wifi), or you can buy a router, which isn't expansive.

Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.
Note: In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys," the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.

  • Connecting a Macbook to an external display

    My imac broke.
I have a white macbook 2.16ghz intel core 2 duo with 2 gb of memory.
While I assume I can connect my macbook to an external monitor, I'm wondering if I can connect it and improve the resolution. I do a lot of work on photoshop and need a resolution of at least 1600 x 1200. My macbook is only 1280x800.
Is there a special connector I can get to upscale the resolution, or do I need to buy an aluminum macbook.
    Thanks

I cannot connect my MacBook Air to a projector - It will not detect a 2nd monitor or display. I am using an Apple made Mini Display port to VGA adapter. As I read online I see that many other peple are having the same problem. Is this an Apple defect!!???? If so it just burst the bubble about how great macs are. I never had a problem with that on a PC. I hope I am wrong. What can you tell me?

    Hi There,
I have had the exact same issue but with a projector.
The issue lies with Mountian Lion 10.8.2.
I tried many a combination with no luck to get HDMI working.
Took my mac into the apple store and came to the conclusion it was the software, so I asked them to install 10.8 onto it (this is destructive so a backup is a must)
Bought my macbook home and voila, now displaying through my projector.
There is a small graphics update after 10.8.1 which seems to be the cause.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

  • How to connect my Macbook to my TV

How do I connect my Macbook2, 1 Intel Core 2 Duo to my TV (which has VGA and HDMI) so I can watch films on my TV from my Laptop? Its really confusing and I thought I understood what i was trying to find but now im not so sure! Any help is really appreciated!

Depends on what input plug you'll be using on your TV. VGA, DVI, Composite or HDMI.You'll need a Mini-DVI adapter and a cable from that to your TV. Here's the various types of Mini-DVI adapters on Amazon.com  http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=min i-dvi&x=9&y=13
(Composite is the red, white and yellow RCA plugs on your TV or red, white and S-Video plugs.)
You'll also need audio cables to the TV using a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs for VGA, DVI or Composite. You attach it from the headphone jack of yourMacBook to the appropriate input plugs on your TV http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=min i-dvi&x=9&y=13#/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_19?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=macboo k+audio+cable&sprefix=macbook+audio+cable&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amacbook+audio+cable
If you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if yourTV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it'sexpecting audio with the HDMI.
When you first hook it up it will probably have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. The MenuBar and Dock will be on the MacBook display and your background screen on the TV but you can move the cursor onto the TV screen.
In System Preferences>Display there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.

  • How to connect my macbook to the TV?

I have a macbook with OS X 10.6.8 and I am using a mini dvi-to-hdmi cable to connect it to the TV. the display was a success but i have no audio. I already purchased a separate audio cable that goes in where you put the earphones on and the other end is the red and white plugs for the TV but i still have no audio out from the TV. It seems that my macbook cant detect the TV for the audio. HELP!!!

You use audio cables to the TV if you use VGA, DVI, or Composite using a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio. You attach it from the headphone jack of your MacBook to the appropriate audio input plugs on your TV.
When you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. You attach it from the headphone jack of your MacBook to the appropriate audio input plugs.
The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI. Check your TV manual though to see if it might have audio plugs that work with one of the HDMI ports. You attach it from the headphone jack of your MacBook to the appropriate audio input plugs on your TV.

  • Connecting a MacBook to an external display or projector

I have tried to connect my MacBook to a projector and to a TV using the mini-DVI to Video adapter, both with the same poor results. Here's the steps I took:
    - Turned on the TV
    - Connected the video cable to the TV "video in"
    - Connected the video cable to the MacBook with the mini-DVI to vieo adapter
    - Opened the MacBook
    - Turned it on
The MacBook boots up, the MacBook resolution changes and the video on the TV is distorted, showing essentially three images of the MacBook display. Any attempt to adjust the resolution using system preferences just makes it worse.
Has anyone had success using a MacBook for presentations using either a TV or a projector and, if so, what procedure do you use to connect?

    Greetings from Hong Kong-
I have a major presentation to give in a couple of days and have NOT been successful connecting to an external display. I am starting to freak out. Any instructions would be helpful!
