How to connect from my Macbook Pro to Apple TV

All,
How do I get my Macbook to connect to my Apple TV?  Is it even possible?

AirPlay
If these devices live on same network you should be able to see your Apple TV in iTunes (bootm right).
Home Sharing should be on if you want to access your iTunes library from Apple TV

  • HT3382 Connect from a MacBook Pro's mini display port to a Display Port monitor?

    Hello everyone,
Is it possible to connect from a MacBook Pro's mini display port to a Display Port monitor with resolutions higher than 1920 x 1200? It seems Apple does not supply a mini-DP to DP adapter.
However, just as they do not make a mini-DP to HDMI adapter, but they do recommend a Belkin product for this purpose.
Is there any reason that a mini-DP to DP adapter or cable wouldn't work and support high resolutions?
    Thanks for your feedback!

    Hey tjk,
    Thanks for the response.
Do you have any recommendations for a potential set up? The audio output and Apple DVI are on different sides of my MBP, which is alright, I guess I can get two long cables to handle each. I was hoping to just have my MBP closer to where I use it, with a cord nearby plugged in on one side to the HDTV and resting near where I keep my MBP for when I want to use the HDTV as an external monitor.
With a converter like this, you can run video out of the MBP's DVI port, and miniToslink (optical) audio out of the 3.5mm stereo mini jack to the converter, then it will combine the two and output audio and video through HDMI to the monitor.

Otherwise, depending on the TV's inputs, for video you could run DVI to DVI on the TV, or DVI to HDMI to the TV. For audio you could run 3.5mm stereo mini plug from the MBP to RCA adapter on the TV. Toslink/optical is also an option.

  • Why is music streamed from my MacBook Pro to Apple TV via AirPlay choppy?

I'm trying to stream music from iTunes on my MacBook Pro to my new Apple TV via AirPlay, but the music is extremely choppy, cutting in and out. It's completely unlistenable. However, I can use AirPlay to stream from my Macbook Pro to my Pioneer VSX 1021 AirPlay enabled receiver with no issues. Additionally, I can stream from my iPhone or iPad to the Apple TV without these issues. Therefore it would appear wifi bandwidth is not the root cause. I'm stumped. Help!

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first.

  • How do I connect my 2013 macbook pro to apple tv

How do I connect my 2013 Retina Macbook Pro (OSX 10.9.5) to my new Apple TV?  When I try, I keep getting a "Cannot connect" message.

Welcome to the Apple Community Mary Ann.
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). You can see which Mac you have and which operating system you are using by selecting 'About this Mac' from the Apple menu in the top left corner of your Mac and selecting the 'More Info' button.

  • How to connect mid 2012 MacBook Pro to home theater system

Okay so I'm looking at purchasing a home theater system and was wanting to know the best way to connect my mid 2012 MacBook Pro to the home theater system and TV. I am wanting to play both movies (Netflix etc) and music. Will my MacBook play 5.1 surround sound to the home theater system? Whats the best way to connect this all up? MacBook audio to the home theater system via Digital Optical from the headphone port with a 3.5mm to toslink adapter and then video to the TV via HDMI cable from the thunderbolt port with thunderbolt to HDMI adapter? My thinking was to separate the video and audio to get the best picture and sound. Any help/advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Will my MacBook play 5.1 surround sound to the home theater system?
    Yes.
Whats the best way to connect this all up?
An AppleTV or any AirPlay-enabled AVR. AirPlay is wireless, though you could use wired Ethernet if you want to avoid all the potential problems associated with wireless. Make sure it specifically says AirPlay which is Apple's proprietary technology. There are quite a few of them to choose from today. Denon is one, I believe Pioneer, there may be others. Shop around. The AppleTV's price was recently reduced to $69 US and may actually be the most cost-effective solution, allowing you to research the best AVR for your needs. The AppleTV has both HDMI (audio and video) and optical audio outputs.
MacBook audio to the home theater system via Digital Optical from the headphone port with a 3.5mm to toslink adapter and then video to the TV via HDMI cable from the thunderbolt port with thunderbolt to HDMI adapter?
Way too complicated But if you really don't want to use AirPlay, you can purchase an inexpensive (< $10) Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter and an equally inexpensive (<$3) HDMI cable to any HDMI input on your AVR.
My thinking was to separate the video and audio to get the best picture and sound.
It makes absolutely no difference. HDMI and optical audio use completely identical digital audio signals.

  • How to connect projector to macbook pro

My company recently purchased a Samsung Pico DLP Projector to use with the office macbooks. There were a bunch of different connections, but none were compatible with the macbook. It looks like we might have purchased the wrong apple adapter cable. Does anyone know the specific cords needed to get this working? Thanks in advance for any help!

You'll note that the MacBook pro is not an iPad and you don't have an iPad dock.
The Samsung Pico DLP Projector has SVGA and composite video inputs. The Macbook Pro has mini-DisplayPort out. So, you probably want to buy a mini-DisplayPort to SVGA adapter as that will give you the best output.
Note: the Samsung Pico DLP has a native resolution of 854x480, but presents itself as a 1280x720 (720p) display. Because each pixel in the projector display represents 2.25 pixels of the image, the result is going to be pretty fuzzy. It's perhaps most appropriate for displaying photos/video, but will probably be a little rough to try and read text / diagrams from (e.g., not so good for presentations).

  • How to connect turntable to Macbook pro?

Hello, I have a turntable that has a Y cable and want to know how I can hook it up to my Macbook pro laptop. I don't want to record anything or save anything I simply want to play my records on my laptop. I don't have a receiver.. THANKS so much!

    Hey, I'm a DJ.
In order to hear phono signals correctly on line-based systems you need a phono pre-amp.
Its in most (older) amplifyers, stereo receivers and audio mixers. You can also buy separate boxes that are just standalone pre-amps.
The thing is, phono pre-amps don't just "boost" the signal. They amplify the low frequencies differently. If you were to just amplify a phono signal.. you would get a lot of hisss, and weak bass.
here's one of those boxes: http://pix.crutchfield.com/kb/Phono_Pre-Amp.jpg
I advise you to get one of the above mentioned options that suits your budget (and perhaps portability)... It's good to know there are also turntables on the market that have a built-in pre-amp... so they come with both a Phono output and a Line output... however the quality of those turntables are terrible most of the time.
    Good luck.

  • How to connect an older MacBook Pro with mini VGA port to HDMI?

I have an older MacBook Pro with a female mini VGA port.  I would like to watch movies which have been downloaded to my laptop on my flat screen TV.  Newer MacBook Pros have a mini DisplayPort for which Belkin makes a cable to use; however, I have not been successful in finding either an adapter or converter to use with my older laptop.
FYI.  Am currently using Leopard but am upgrading to Snow Leopard.

I believe you naeed the Apple ADC to DVI adapter.

  • How to get my Music and videos from my Macbook pro to apple TV

I have some music and videos from my macbook that i have added to itunes from CD's and DVDs. Whenever i try to play music or movies on my apple TV it says that there is no music in the library. Is this because the items were not bought on itunes and were added from my computer??

If the music and video is compatible, it should play from Computers.
The Mac and iTunes must be running, the media files must be accessible on an internal or attached external drive.
I assume you have enabled Home Sharing.
