How to connect my home Mac at distance

Please, can someone tell me how process to make a connection between my home Mac et my Macbook pro  when I am outside home?
Thank you for the answers

Start with TeamViewer.com (free for personal use) - this is one of the easier ways to connect from a remote location.
Another approach is setups a Virtual Private Network (VPN) using Hamachi from LogMeIn.com (again there is a free for personal use option).
While I have not tried it, I think you can use Apple's iCloud to connect a Mac OS X Lion laptop to a Mac OS X Lion home system.
There are more complex setup option available involving port forwarding specific ports on your home router <https://PortForward.com>.

  • How to connect to other mac 1000 miles away

Hello, can anyone telle me how I can connect to my parents mac knowing that they live in the south of France and I live in Brussels (Belgium). I just want to help them when they need it !
Thanks for you feedback and input, Steven

The easy is things like iChat (as previously suggested), LogMeIn.com (previously suggested), and TeamViewer.com
If you have an Apple MobileMe subscription, and your parents are using Mac OS X Leopard, then the Back-to-my-Mac option might work (as previously suggested).
If you want to use the build-in screen sharing so you can take control when they are not around, then that requires more setup work at your parent's end. However, if you can not figure out LogMeIn.com, you are not going to like all the setup work required on your parent's home router.
Here is an overview of what you would need to do:
o Configure your parent's home router to "Port Forward" port 5900 from the public internet to their Mac.
o Most likely they would need to configure your parent's Mac so it has a private fixed IP address via System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> TCP/IP
o Need to configure System Preferences -> Screen Sharing on your parent's Mac (if they are older the Mac OS X Leopard (10.5) it will be called something else).
o You will need to either know your parent's login account name and password, or you will need to create a special account that allows you to take control of your parent's Mac via System Preferences -> Accounts
o You will need to get a free Dynamic DNS name from a service such as No-IP.com or DynDNS.org. Then download and run the Dynamic DNS updating utility on your parent's Mac. This updating utility must run all the time, as it will make sure that the Dynamic DNS is always up-to-date. Then when you want to connect to your parent's Mac, you can use the Dynamic DNS name instead of the every changing IP address that your parent's ISP will have assigned.
I think that covers the high points. Most of this is because just about everyone is connected to the internet via a home router which effectively blocks unsolicited connections from the internet. What you are doing is allowing an unsolicited connection from you to your parents.
NOTE: Actual details on how to setup this configuration has been explained in detail many times in these forums. Try searching for "port forward" and you are bound to find them.

  • How to connect a home Ethernet network and Time Machine?

My home is wired for Ethernet, but I cannot figure out how to make it active.
Currently I have my cable modem connected to a Time Machine. Then, the Time Machine is connected to the Ethernet lines that run through my house. If I try to connect my laptop to one of the Ethernet jacks in the house, it does not work. I can however connect the laptop to the Time Machine directly with no issues.
Any ideas on what I may be missing?
    Thank you.

The Time Capsule is indeed a wireless router, also having three Ethernet ports. So it should be capable of handling up to three devices connecting via Ethernet and routing them to the Internet through your cable modem which should be connected to the WAN port on the Time Capsule.
Again, if you connect a computer directly to one of the Ethernet ports in the Time Capsule and it works to get you to the Internet, but you then connect one of the in-wall Ethernet lines to that same port in the Time Capsule and connect the same computer using the same patch cable to the other end of the in-wall Ethernet line and it doesn't work, then the in-wall cabling is bad.

  • How to connect with another Mac via AFP

My parents have a Mac (10.4.8) which is in a different location than my own. They would like to send me some files however, I thought it would be easier if I could just log into their computer from mine, and grab the files myself.
How is this done, if at all? I have the AFP address of their computer (file sharing is on as is Apple Talk on both machines) but can't seem to get this to work by using the connect to server command?
    Any help much appreciated!

If you have broadband internet then why not send the files via email. Quick, simple.
If your computers can be connected via Ethernet or wireless, then you can use file sharing. However, you must be able to communicate directly. That means connecting an Ethernet cable between the two computers or being able to communicate wirelessly - wireless modem, Ethernet modem connected to a wireless router, and Airport cards in both computers. • Connect To Home Mac Desktop From Work

Does anyone know how I can connect to my iMac G5 at home from work by using either ARD or some type of FTP software?

    Hi Mathew
Your question is a bit too broad to get an answer. It's a bit like asking "Does anyone know how I can write a document using Word?" How can anyone answer such a question? "Yes, buy it and use it" ?
To try and be helpful I will say that I connect to and control my MacMini at home from my iMac at work using ARD. It is not the cheapest way to do it. If all you want to do is see the screen and contol it, via mouse and keyboard, there are other VNC programs available for free. ARD has a lot more management tools as it is aimed at people running installations like school computer labs where one computer controls dozens of others. I have had a lot of trouble getting these more advanced features to work outside the LAN, which is why I'm searching the list today. I have had very poor experience with transfering files over the Internet with ARD. Sometimes it has worked, mostly not.
Which brings me to the second point. You mention "ARD or some type of FTP software". ARD and FTP are very different tools, although I guess ARD uses the FTP protocol. ARD lets you see and control a remote computer. FTP is for sending files. If you just want to send files I wholeheartedly recommend Transmit

  • How to connect 10.9 Mac to USB printer via E2500 router?

So I've established that Linksys Connect software is incompatible with a Mac running OS 10.9 Mavericks.
Is Linksys Connect the only way to connect a Mac with a printer connected to the E2500 router? Or is there another way to make it work?

New operating systems and older software always have compatibly issues. Recently firmware updates have been pushed out. Maybe one will come for the E2500.
In a business environment you would normally share out the printer from a server or PC. Sharing from a router will be problematic.
How about the reverse; sharing the printer from the MAC to the PC? Do you have an old computer lying around you can turn into a Printer server? I just had a thought, there are actual printer server devices made for this as well.
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.

  • How to connect to desktop mac using iPhone. File sharing, ScreenSharing???

Can you please explain how can I connect to my desktop using my iPhone like ScreenSharing will do or file sharing.
Please describe step be step how to?
    Thank you,
A new iPhone user who want to get the most out of it

If by it you mean Mocha VNC, that is how it works. You can connect when you are not on your network but you will have to enable forwarding on you router if you have one.
What is it tha you want to do remotly?
This world of remote management is that of the IT tech. Mocha is for techs and people that get the technology they are using or are interested in getting it. It is not plug and play stuff. You have to be willing to learn a bit and then with that comes a lot of power.
If you just want to turn it on and have it work anywhere you won't find that. The reason ports are blocked form the internet is to protect your computers from someone else doing exactly what you are trying.
So if you want you can enable port forwarding for port 5900 on your router. The IP address VNC Mocha will need is now the IP address of your router. Create a second connection on the list in Mocha for this connection as it is different than the one that will work on your network. Your router will forward anything on that port to you computer. I have successfully done this. It isn't very fast i will say. The screen refresh is very slow. You need patience to get anything done. I needed a file from a PC i had at home. It took about 15 minutes to get that file moved on to my iDisk through running Firefox on the PC from several towns away using Mocha. I might have been on a slow internet connection too.

  • How do I connect both a Mac and PC to Apple TV Home Sharing?

    Goal
    - I am trying to share both my PC and Mac through my Apple TV2 on the "Computers" home sharing menu.
    - These are 2 seperate iTunes accounts as they are 2 different owners of the PC and Macbook.
    - However, home sharing only allows me to have one at a time, can I not have 2 computers connected?
(The menu is in fact plural and says "Computers" not "Computer")
    Attempt
-I turn on home sharing on my PC with my PC iTunes account, it then shows up on the "Computers" list as PC
-I turn on home sharing on my Mac with my Mac iTunes account, it then shows up on the "Computers" list as Mac, but it deletes the PC share
    Troubleshoot
-So I started from scatch and connected the PC share with my PC itunes account, it shows up,
-Then I connect the Mac home sharing with the same iTunes login as my PC, but it also erases my PC from the "Computers" list and just displays the Mac.
    Question
-How do I connect both a Mac and PC to Apple TV Home Sharing?
-I want them both to show up in the "Computers" list.
-So the final result will look like this on my Apple TV menu:
    Computers
    -PC
    -Mac
whew... I'm out of breath... I hope there is an Apple Genius out there that can help.
    Thanks!

After retrying the home share with the SAME ITUNES ACCOUNT ON HOME SHARING I finally got it to work.

  • How do I use my wireless Led TV as a second monitor using my home network without any cables? Both of them are connected to home network

How do I use my wireless Led TV as a second monitor to my mac book pro using my home network without any cables? Both of them are connected to home network

Having a gateway there is not going to be a problem. We just need to configure the Time Capsule correctly to work with the 2Wire.
You will need one ethernet cable to connect the 2Wire to the Time Capsule and a second ethernet cable to temporarily connect your computer to the Time Capsule so that it can be configured.
The 2Wire you have now should already be broadcasting a wireless network, so once you have the Time Capsule setup, you will actually have two wireless networks there.
Here's how to configure the Time Capsule to work with the 2Wire:
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the 2Wire to the WAN (circle icon) port on the Time Capsule.
Connect another ethernet cable temporarily from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule
Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to assign a name for the Time Capsule, a device password (write this down) and adjust time zone settings
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
    Wireless Mode....Create a wireless network
    Wireless Network Name....Your choice
    Radio Mode....Automatic
    Channel...Automatic
    Wireless Security...WPA/WPA2 Personal
Wireless Password....Your choice (write this down)
Check mark next to....Remember password in keychain
    Click the Internet icon
At the bottom, change the setting for Connection Sharing to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Click Update at the lower right and the Time Capsule will restart after 20-25 seconds and you should get the green light.
You should now be able to connect to your Time Capsule wireless network.
I'm not clear on whether you have tried to setup the Time Capsule to backup your computer. Post back if you need some info on that. We may need to start another thread for that as that will be a different subject.
