How to connect Time Capsule?

I am looking for a backup solution and I am consider a Time Capsule. Consider the following situation:
Mac Pro
Leopard
I have a few questions:
1. Can I connect the Time Capsule via ethernet and direct Time Machine to backup to the Time Capsule using ethernet?
2. If I do not use ethernet, can I use the USB port on the back of the Time Capsule to connect to my Mac Pro and use it with Time Capsule that way?
3. What hard drive manufacturer is used in the Time Capsule?
4. I understand the Time Capsule has built in WI-FI, but if I do not want to use WI-FI for back-up what are my other options if 1&2 do not work above to connect Time Capsule to my Mac Pro?

No, this is not possible. The USB port will support compatible printers and an outboard USB drive.

Difficult to say. I'm sure Apple uses different suppliers. The only way to know is to open up the Time Capsule (voiding the warranty). The "Get Info" command may possibly supply some general information.

You can connect to the Time Capsule via ethernet or wireless. If you do not intend to use the wireless capability of the Time Capsule at all, you can turn off the wireless using AirPort Utility, the setup application that is used to configure the Time Capsule.

Okay, so just bought a Time Capsule, and in the process of setting it up, I am being told by Airport Utility that I need to hardwire the TC to my wireless router in order for it create a network.....
My question: Is there anyway around this? Is there anyway I can create an extended WiFi connection thru the TC without hardwiring? I have a wifi extender (NetGear universal wifi range extender WGN3000) and was hoping that TC would connect to it and act as a second extender relay.

Also, is my understanding correct that if the TC is not hardwired, and it does not possess a wireless connection, then in order to backup my computer, I must connect to the basestation in Airport, and during that time I will be unable to use the internet??

We always say to people do the first backup by ethernet anyway.. wireless takes far too long.. once you are just doing incremental then it is ok by wireless.
But wireless halves in speed for every hop.. so make sure there is only ever one wireless link between the TC and the computer if at all possible. If you join it by wireless to the network.. you will have no gain.. and lots of pain.. plus half what are already poor speeds.. so you may as well just connect to the router by ethernet.. and bridge the TC.. you can then also setup wireless .. particularly 5ghz which the rest of your network probably doesn't use so you have a faster than normal link both to internet and TC for backup.. when you are in the same room.. link at 5ghz gives great speed and poor range.. go more than one room away and it will generally fall away to nothing.

The Guest Network feature is not available when the Time Capsule is configured as a bridge, but otherwise, you will be able to configure it to provide a dual band wireless network for your devices and also provide Ethernet connections if needed.
You can choose to ignore the wireless network provided by the O2 device, or if you have access to the configuration settings, it should be a simple task to turn off the wireless function of the O2 gateway.

I am struggling to set up my time capsule is it possible to connect it to my existing wireless router or does the time capsule have to replace it as I have tried to do that but I cannot get a connection or signal to the WAN port?
I have the set up instructions but its not helping I am a complete novice at this.

Yes you can.
Just plug the TC into one of the Ethernet ports on your router. WAN port on the TC.
Before you do that, set the TC up to be in 'bridge mode' in AirPort Utility.

I ordered a Time Capsule which I primarily want to use for back up, and at least at this point plan on using U-verse for internet access, wireless printing.
I have read many previous posts on this, and they are a little too technical for me! Would someone be willing to tell me the exact step-by-step details? I need them down to the last little thing, including what order to plug things in, power them up etc, as well as which settings to choose.

How to add Time Capsule to a Telewell ASDL Router

I tried to connect Time Capsule (2 TB a bit older model) to a Telewell ASDL Router and then run Time Machine through WiFi to Time Capsule. However, the only way I was able to make it work was to plug Time Capsule to the MacBook with an ethernet cable. When I tried to plug Time Capsule to the Telewell Router (with an ethernet cable) the internet connection of the router got disconnected. So I believe I am asking how to connect Time Capsule to the router, and if I need to do something in addition (i.e. is is possible to run two WLANs - the one from Telewell and the other from Time Capsule simultaneously?).

Put the TC in bridge mode and plug it into the Modem.. it will work fine if you set it up before you plug it in.. I have given extremely detailed instructions here..

Are you really using Snow Leopard?? If so the manual setup from 5.6 utility is a bit different but the overall information is still correct..
You can run two different WLANs without issues.. you must setup the TC to create a wireless network anyway.. do not try to extend or join the modems' wireless .. that is wrong.
It has to be plugged into the modem by ethernet.

I want to connect Time Capsule with Time Warner modem

How do you connect Time Capsule to a Time Warner modem? I am upgrading my Wi-Fi to AC and have a Motorola modem without AC, router and WiFi. I could just upgrade the Motorola modem, but I would like to use a Time Capsule. My connection to Time Warner usesd a splitter that goes to a DVR with the other end going to the Motorola modem by way of a coax connector.

Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> port on the Motorola modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.
Power up the Time Capsule for a few minutes. At this point the amber light will be blinking slowly on the device.
On your Mac....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on Other WiFi Devices
Click on Time Capsule
The utility will open up and take a minute to analyze the network, then display a window that looks like the screenshot below...except that you will see a Time Capsule on the screen.
Network Name......enter a simple name that you want to use as your wireless network name
Base Station Name....enter a simple name that you want to call the Time Capsule
Password.....enter a password that will be used for both the network and Time Capsule
Verify......verify the password
Cick Next
The utility will set up everything for you. When you see a green light on the Time Capsule, log on to the new wireless network that you have created and enter the password to connect.

I have a tower and recently a laptop at work. The tower is connected to our local network with an ethernet cable and the laptop with wireless. So, the internet connection is fine for both.
I was hoping to use my time capsule to do time machine backups on my laptop. Do you have any advice on how to configure this? I do not want to use the time capsule to extend my Internet, as I believe my work I.T. would prefer to handle all access to their network.
Perhaps there is some documentation about doing this that you could point me to? I have not been able to find it.

Your original question was How to use Time Capsule for wireless back-up but not Internet?
There is no reason for you to connect the tower....or anything else...using Ethernet if your goal remains that same as you stated.
If you are asking if you can backup the Tower using Ethernet, and not wireless, then you can connect the tower to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule....not the WAN port.

I just have to select the network that it created. Of course, I have no access to the Internet while this is happening and it can not auto backup, unless I am on that wireless signal.
As I stated, that is the downside to trying to back up without an Internet connection. You have to establish another network...and backup over that network.
If you are asking if you can stay connected to the work network while also backing up to your non-Internet "private" network, that is not possible.

Using Ethernet, you normally get around 30 GB per hour transferred, so about 16-17 hours that way.
Wireless would be about 3-5 times slower, on average, so a very rough estimate would be 50-80 hours over wireless. Much depends on your actual wireless connection. Do you know what that is?

I already have a DSL router, but want to connect my time capsule to that router.
Do i connect it through ethernet?, and is it possible to have my time capsule as a different router at home with a different password than the DSL router?, if so how is that possible?, is going to have the same download/upload speed as the DSL router?

You simply bridge the TC.
Plug it by ethernet into the adsl modem router and it will work fine.

No, the TC will cause trouble if you set it up as a router.. it has to be bridged. You only have a single adsl connection but there are some ISP that allow a secondary pppoe login and some modems that allow it. It is pretty difficult setup. Ask your ISP as there is often a charge that is very high for the second connection. It will still share the same link so there is no improvement in speed, merely two different authentications sharing the same line. The TC can do pppoe client but has nothing very fancy about it.

Connecting Time Capsule with WildBlue Satellite Service

I am trying to set up Time Capsule to work with my satellite service, WildBlue, and I can't get it working properly.
Before WildBlue was installed, I connected my iMac and my wife's iMac (it's on Mac OS 10.5.0), one at a time, with Time Capsule directly via Ethernet and back-up each iMac.
WildBlue satellite service was installed yesterday and the installer had no idea how to hook everything up. It was his first install. I was able to connect the WildBlue modem via Ethernet directly to my wife's Mac and made it work. When I try to add the Time Capsule, that's where I run into problems.
I ran the Ethernet cable from the WildBlue modem to the Internet WAN port on Time Capsule and I could not get it to work at all via AirPort. I tried using AirPort Utility and System Preferences - Network and could not get anything to work. I then ran an Ethernet cable from one of the four Ethernet plugs on the back of Time Capsule to the Ethernet plug on the back of my wife's iMac and was able to connect to the internet and get email on her Mac. I tried to run Time Machine, but it can't find Time Capsule! The only way it seems that I can get her iMac to do anything is to either connect it directly to the modem without Time Capsule or run the Ethernet cable thru Time Capsule to the iMac and not be able to connect to Time Machine. I still could not connect my iMac (it's on Mac OS 10.5.4) via Airport no matter what I did.
Can someone help me so that I can get Time Capsule connected and working the way it should?
My understanding is that I should be able to connect Time Capsule to the WildBlue modem via Ethernet and then connect my wife's iMac directly to Time Capsule via Ethernet and still be able to run Time Machine to back-up her iMac. Her iMac and the WildBlue modem sit in the same room together and my iMac is on the other side of the house where I want to use AirPort to connect to Time Capsule so that I can back-up my iMac and have access to the internet. If this isn't the way it is going to work can someone explain it to me on how it should and how I should set everything up to work correctly?

You can, but devices connected to the D-Link switch will drop to a maximum of 100 Mbps speeds. The Time Capsule supports 1,000 Mbps or Gigabit speeds.
If you plan to transfer a lot of files using Ethernet, the numbers speak for themselves.

But when I connect Time Capsule via an ethernet cable to the back of the modem I am unable to get it to work and I lose my wifi connection completely. I added Time Capsule to back up data and also to extend the reach of my wifi with an airport extreme hooked up by another computer.

Put the TC in bridge before you plug it in.. ie do the setup in isolation to the rest of the network..
I would also start a new wireless name on the TC so it is different to the cable router..
If you want to be exacting also set wireless channels so the cable router is set to say channel 1 and the TC set to 11 for 2.4ghz. Then plug it in.. you will have no trouble as the TC will get an ip address as part of the existing networking.. then extend the wireless using the extreme.

If you plan to fill up most of the space on the iMac right from the start, then you might need more space. Few users ever use more than about 75-80% of the space on their computers. I was figuring you would fill up about 75% of the drive....around 1.5 TB or so. 3 TB backup would be about right.

I'm not certain the post I sent was posted correctly, as I added it as a reply to a 3-year old thread. Since this is a recently-active thread, though not specific to the issue at hand, I thought I'd post again:
Three years ago you helped me set up a roaming wireless network in my home. It's been rock-steady and I'm forever grateful to you for the time and guidance you gave me. I'd now like to swap out my AirPort Extreme base station for a time capsule. As I understand it, I should be able to unplug the base station and replace it with the TC without problem, so long as I use all the same settings on my TC... network name, security protocol, password, etc. Given the complexity of my network, I thought I should check with you first for any advice you might have. I don't want to set up a new network or make any changes to the existing one-- with the exception of using the TC in place of the AE. I'm already using Time Machine for backups. As a refresher, my current setup has the AE as base station and 3 expresses hard-wired with Ethernet connections elsewhere in my home. I have a 4th express set up wirelessly to use with my stereo system at the front of the house. All AXs are 'n's and are set up, as per your instructions, in Bridge mode to extend the existing network. I'm running the most updated version of Mavericks on my MBPro. I can't connect Time Capsule (TC) to the iMac. I get the following message: Another device on the network is using your ocmputer's IP address.

So does the Mac get an IP from the network or is it self allocated?
Does it have internet?
Can you please give me some more info.. I want the IP of the TC.. if still default then it is 10.0.1.1
What IP has your Mac got? Just get it from the network preferences. You have direct access via the airport icon.
We have seen any number of issues with Lion and latest TC firmware. Why it works on one computer and not another I don't know.
Try rebooting all the network items.. turn everything off and start in correct order with a few minutes in between.
modem---main router (TC if that is it)----wireless extenders----then clients.
Does the TC now appear?
If not from a computer that can access it, do a reset of the TC and change all the names to SMB compliant.
Short, no spaces no special characters.. ie pure alphanumeric.
Passwords can be longer.. but same rules.. nothing more than 20 characters.
Lock the wireless channels.. for 2.4ghz, 1, 6, 11, and try each in turn if you have issues.
