Yes you can add the printer to the router and the router should be able to direct your requests. Due to the printer software restrictions, the other utilities like cleaning/alighning etc would not work and you'd have to connect via USB.
I am using the same printer with my Belkin N600 router and the printing works fine.
And on a side note, just try to figure out things yourself. The support (as evident from the above two replies) is outright pathetic and misleading.

Are you using the airprint function of the iPhone or a print app like HP ePrint? It might be worth downloading the HP eprint app and trying to print using the app.
I know that you've laready tried this but restart the iPhone again to see if it re-establishes a connection. Once the phone and printer are on the same wifi network, you should be able to see the printer via airprint and any print apps.
Alternatively, you can use the wireless direct funtion of your printer by turining on the wireless button on the front of the printer. This allows the printer generate it's own wifi singal that you can connect to through any wireless device. To find the wireless password, simply hold down the wireless direct button for more than 3 secs and it will print the password on plain paper (make sure paper is loaded).

Welcome to the HP Support Forums. I understand that you would like to know how to print from your iPad to your Deskjet 3511 printer.
Your printer is AirPrint and ePrint capable so you should be able to use either method to print once your printer is connected to your wireless network. The instructions on connecting your printer to your wireless network can be found in your user guide. You can designate it as a wireless printer during the setup as detailed in the section "Traditional wireless connection" on page 32. If you have already installed your printer onto your computer using a USB connection, the instructions to switch to a wireless connection can also be found on page 32 in the section titled "Change from a USB connection to a wireless network".
I have included several reference documents for you. The first one reviews printing from an Apple mobile device to your printer. I have also included the document on how to setup ePrint and customize the printer's ePrint email address. There are two mobile apps available from HP that will allow you to send print jobs to your printer, the HP ePrint mobile app and the HP All-in-One Printer Remote app. The AiO app will also allow you to scan from your printer to your iPad. How do I change the printer option to wireless from the present USB connection?

When I try to print from Firefox, the print job tries to go through a USB connection to the printer. My printer is wireless and goes through a router. How do I change the settings on Firefox to recognize the router?

I think Firefox just works with the information it gets from Windows and doesn't have any setting for how you connect to your printer.
In the Print dialog (you can use Ctrl+p to call it up), if you click next to Name, does Firefox display two different printers, one USB and one wireless, that you could choose from?
