on the connection window for when im connecting my pc to the net, using my phone as a modem, can i use the bt homehub through my phone as a connection for my pc to save my bill going up, ive tried to connect it, but it isnt working any one else had any trouble?

Thanks for the quick response. No, I did not get any error messages or any terms-of-usage screen. The employee I told my problem to was not computer savvy either. She just suggested I move to different spots w/in the library to see if that would make a difference. It didn't. When I connected to the library WiFi it did change the Verizon 3G that is usually in the upper left corner to iPad with two to three emanating arcs. I may have to go to the library in the next town. I was able to connect to theirs in the past when I had to download something greater than 20 MB. Unless I really want it, I will probably not even try to download something more than 20 MB due to the hassle. Yeah, I may have been better off getting a normal desktop or laptop and getting WiFi at home. To do that now would mean having my iPad 2 and a desktop computer, which I feel is extravagant. (I know there are a lot of big spenders out there who got the iPad as additional gadget for fun. This is a rich country.) A Verizon rep told me I couldn't set up a WiFi router at home just using an iPad. So it seems like a person who just uses 3G is limited to surfing the net (not even much YouTube because it eats a lot of data) and using email. I read about an app that helps print wirelessly using 3G, but a reviewer said you had to be an engineer to get it done right. BTW, I like the Steelers. I'm old enough to remember Franco Harris and that blond guy whose name escapes me back in the '70s. Since I live in North Jersey I feel I have to support the Giants. But I know football about as well as computers.

Usually the modem needs to be reset. It stores information about your computer that sometimes needs to be reset.
Have him power down the computer, then unplug the power to the modem.
Wait for a minute, then plug the modem back in and wait for it to initialize itself. Then power up the computer.
If that doesn't work, have him call his internet provider.
They can determine if there is anything wrong with the line or the modem.

What hardware are you using?
Power quality analyzer?
Programmable AC power source?
Fast Transient Generator?
Here is an example of what I do.
To create PQ problems I use a California Instruments AC source set to nominal power for the unit under test. Using Labview I program several transients consisting of fixed and random duration dropouts and surges. I also use a Schaffer Fast Transient Burst Generator to apply high frequency noise bursts directly onto power lines.
For measuring power quality I use a Voltech PM3000A power analyzer and Labview to measure everything from voltage, current, and frequency, to harmonics and %THD

How to connect to the internet using ethernet

I have an iMac 10,1 and am unable to connect it to the internet using an ethernet cable.
I have a more recent Mac Book and I just plugged in the ethernet cable to it, clicked the setting in Network settings, and I was connected.
On the iMac it keeps saying, diagnostics can't fix it etc..?
On the left panel in Diagnostics, Ethernet has a green light, Network Settings an orange light, and ISP a green light (internet and Server are Red).
I'm using Comcast cable, and they just say the settings should appear automatically on a Mac (which they apparently did on my Mac Book!)
Any suggestions, appreciated.

I have an i pod touch, which i use to facetime friends abroad when i am at home in the uk. I work on a ship and we have very limited broadband and we are not permitted to stream through company PC's. When we are in port what i would like to do is buy a USB modem/dongle (locally, as of now i am in indonesia) for my laptop, and connect to the net using that. Is it possible to make the laptop a wfi hot spot and then connect my touch so i can facetime.

If you are downloading from iTunes, once the download is complete, you should be able to play it offline. Make sure it did complete. Mopvies are very large files so can take a while to download dependng on your internet connection.
If you are downloading from another service such as Netflix or Amazon it may not have that option.

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:

I have set up an adhoc network on the desk top and the ATV is supossed to connect to the net thru the desktop which is connected to the net via ethernet. I can connect to iTunes via the desk top which is how I downloaded the movie from iTunes store. The desk top is synced to the ATV and everything is working OK except thaat the ATV has no conectivity with the net.

In the blink of an eye, both Thunderbird and Firefox have BOTH STOPPED connecting to the Net. let me share with you what I have done... and what has been unsuccessful this far.
System & Software Pertinents..
Windows 7 x64 System running a i7 Intel CPU, with 8 GB of RAM and a 500 GB Drive.
Thunderbird is Version 24.2
Firefox is Version 27.
Here are the specific things that I have done, POST problem, to try and solve..
A) Check firewall settings... BOTH programs are cleared for Bit Passage
B) Check Anti-Virus.... Anti-Virus Disabled.. UNINSTALLED and Registry Cleaned.. still has the problem persisting..
C) Deleted and Reinstalled Thunderbird & Firefox Working Directories (without deleting User Profiles)... Problem still persisting..
D) Created NEW Profile with Profile Mgr in Firefox.. no go...
E) RAN WHOLE System VIRAL/MALWARE Check... .. No infections..
F) FRESH REINSTALLS of Thunderbird and Firefox... NO go...
G) Checked Processes using ENUM and DNS Checks... both check out fine!
H) OTHER browsers connect... OPERA.. Chrome and IE even... Also, Sea Monkey... but not Firefox.
In TRYING to create an e.mail account, Thunderbird's Account Creation interface sits there attempting to connect... no connection achieved...
Any help that you can offer is appreciated!!
