How to connect to Time Capsule over internet when TC is not router?

Hi
I purchase my TC 2 days ago in order to both back up my files and to be able to access files stored in TC over the internet.
After some time (and frustration!) I found that TC cannot be used as a router with sky broadband. This is confirmed by Sky technical help line and via this forum
http://store.apple.com/uk/question/answers/product/MD032B/A/can-i-use-time-capsu le-with-sky-mrouter/QCXY9XJPFFYHPHTKK
So I connected my TC to my router via an ethernet cable. I can back up using my mac book air running the latest mountain lion. My problem is that I cannot tick the "share disk over wan" option in Airport Utility which I think I need to do before I can access files over the internet. This option just doesn't appear and reading other forums, I think it is because my TC is not the router.
Is there some work around or configuration that will allow me to get that option to tick or to able to access my files on the TC over the net?
Ultimately, I would like to access my TC files using my ipad.
I am not much of a techie
Thanks!

The TC should be in bridge mode.. in bridge there is no WAN port.. so you cannot tick to share files over WAN because there isn't one.
But you can still share files.. there is nothing in the documentation for BTMM and iCloud that says the TC has to be the main router.. although doubtless it will make it easier.
How exactly are you trying to access the files now??
If you are not using BTMM and iCloud please describe what you have done.
It is no problem if you have a fixed ie static public IP to access the TC even without BTMM.
There is plenty of descriptions of the method around the net.. just google it.
Here is one I have used.
http://gigaom.com/2009/05/14/access-your-time-capsule-over-the-internet/
The TC is indeed bridged in this case.
You simply forward port 548 from the sky router to the TC.
Ultimately, I would like to access my TC files using my ipad.
This is where life starts to get hard.. to access the files you need AFP files protocol which ipad does not use.You cannot use ipad to get files at all from the TC without a file browser.. the vast majority of which use SMB protocol which will not work over the internet in most cases. ( it is too big a security risk).
There is only one file browser I know of for iPad that is AFP based. file connect.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/files-connect/id404324302?mt=8
But I am not sure if it will work over BTMM.. to get files remotely.
Nevertheless if you have a connection remotely to the TC by direct means you may be able to access files.
I have done it with a MBP sharing files on a bridged TC, to a person on the other side of the world. No issues and as long as you have a static public IP it is easy.
If you don't then see if it is cheap to buy one.. some ISP will offer static IP for a single charge of $20 or something.
Some want $10 a month.. that is too much.
Or use DynDNS in the sky router. That is the way we get around dynamic IP most people use.
Just look up your sky router manual for dynamic DNS servers it supports.
I am iPadless.. and probably willl remain so for the foreseeable future.. so I cannot test it for you. IMHO internet security does become an issue with this sort of thing. There are other means to be considered.. namely vpn.. which I know the iPad and Macs support but the TC has not got vpn endpoints available.

  • Can not connect to Time Capsule hard drive when I am not on its network.

If you can help me, I will be forever grateful!
I had a airport extreme with a hard drive that I used to back up my computer and to access my files when I am on the road. (Everything worked perfectly)
I switched to the Time Capsule.
I am now unable to connect to my Time Capsule drive when I am on the road.
I get this message: The server "time capsule name"may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.
    Some notes:
-I am using the same exact modem at home I have been using this whole time
-I am connecting using the same connection I did when I connected with my airport extreme
    -I can connect to mobileme
-My mobileme name and password are in the advanced options in the Capsule
    -My firewall is OFF
-My back to my Mac option is ON in Mobileme preferences
-I have the most up to date OS package
-I have the most up to date capsule version

    Hey,

  • I have a macbook pro and use BT homehub 3.  can't work out how to connect my time capsule. can anyone help, thanks.

I have a macbook pro and use BT homehub 3.  can't work out how to connect my time capsule. can anyone help?  thanks

Just need to plug the TC in to the hub in bridge mode.. do not try and bridge the homehub.. it is not possible with the setup BT uses.
To bridge the TC.. plug it directly into a computer by ethernet.. no other connection to the TC or the computer.
Press and hold in reset until the front LED flashes rapidly.. about 10sec.
    Release the reset.
Open the airport utility and setup the TC to bridge mode.
The actual method depends on version of the OS and airport utility you use.
    This is version 5.
Sorry I cannot post the v6 as I am on a snow leopard computer now. But you go to the network tab, and choose off bridge mode for method of connection. It will be NAT and dhcp by default.
Then setup wireless.. you have a number of choices here.
Either setup with the same SSID Security and password, as the homehub uses.. or a different name, and password..
Each method works fine.. but you sometimes have issues with wireless channels.. for now leave it on auto and see what happens.. if you have issues lock down the radio channels on both devices.. use one out of the following on each, 1, 6, 11 or 13 in UK.. so say 6 on the homehub then 13 onthe TC.
Update the TC.. unplug fromt the computer and plug it into the homehub.
If you have other issues with the setup tell us what OS you run so we can post suitable screenshots.

I can't connect to Time Capsule- error message: Backup disk is not available. Was working fine before.

Restart it.. Does this all the time with Lion and even worse ML.
Restart the whole network if that doesn't work.. do it in correct order.. from off.. modem.. TC.. clients 2min gap.

Can't seem to figure out how to access the Time Capsule drive over the internet. As far as I know it is all set up. But I have no clue how to access it when I am on the road. Do I do this through Mobile Me?

  • How to connect a Time Capsule to an existing Airport Extreme?

I have an Airport Extreme connected to my broadband internet modem. This Airport Extreme is also connected to my audio system to be used by iTunes.
Recently I brougth my Time Capsule from another location to be included in the Airport Extreme network. I want to continue using Time Machine on the Time Capsule, and iTunes on the Airport Extreme.
I could get this to work, by connecting the Time Capsule to my modem, and setting it up to extend an existing network (the Airport Extreme network). Airport Extreme and Time Capsule are situated next to each other. However, performance of Time Machine was horrible, far too slow. If I connect my MacBook to the Time Capsule by an ethernet cable, it does not work.
When I set up the Time Capsule to create another wireless network, performance of Time Machine is okay. I cannot use iTunes on the Airport Extreme in that case. I have to switch networks for that.
I'm sure it should be possible to have both an Airport Extreme and a Time Capsule in one network, use iTunes on the Extreme, and Time Machine on the Time Capsule. But I do not know how it should be arranged.
    Can anyone solve this problem?
    Greetings from Holland, Koen

+What surprises me is that with setting 1 (TC joining AX) the Time Capsule has an option to extend the range of the network being joined.+
Yes, but it will only "extend" if you have a newer version of the AirPort Express, the 802.11"n" version. If you have an older "b/g" version of the AirPort Express, you can set the Time Capsule to "extend", but it won't and you'll have problems.
+With setting 2 (AX joining TC) the Airport Express does not seem to have this option.+
This probably confirms that you have an older "b/g" version of the AirPort Express. It does not have the "extend" feature.
+Could it be this option (which I did not switch off in my earlier experiments) which gave me such terribly bad transfer rates to my Time Capsule harddisk?+
That's probably the reason since the older version of the AirPort Express cannot be configured to "extend".

  • How to connect a time capsule with an ATT Elevate Hot Spot

    Hi,
Need help connecting my time capsule to my ATT Elevate Hot Spot....since I have no ethernet connection.
    Thanks!

Not sure how much we can help on this, but as a test, if you turn off the wireless on your MacBook and connect it to the router using an Ethernet cable, you should be able to log onto the Internet.
If you can, you know the Ethernet connection is working, and it will be a simple matter to connect the Time Capsule to the router and get it set up.
If you cannot get an Internet connection when you connect the Mac directly to the router, then more troubleshooting will be required.

  • Access Time Capsule over internet

Is it possible to connect your time capsule to be a shared drive over the internet so u can access files etc. stored on it? I know its possible but im yet to come across instructions for time capsule's also being used as the router?

Yes. The easiest way to do this involves using a MobileMe account. You'd then use the MobileMe tab in the Advanced panel of AirPort Utility to enter the MobileMe sign-on information and sign the "remote" Mac into that MobileMe account using the "Back to My Mac" tab of the MobileMe panel of System Preferences.

  • Access time capsule over internet using a Domain name

    Hi
I would like to know if there is a possibility to access my time capsule over the internet by my domain name on GoDaddy??

    Regards,
A tutorial for any generation is equally valid.
It doesn't matter what URL you use as long as the computer translates it to the IP address of the WAN of your router.. which then forwards port 548 to the TC.. or if the TC is the main router, then you tick the WAN access and set the network password for the hard disk in the TC.

Click the File Sharing tab just below the Advanced icon
You should see an option to "Share disks over the Internet..

  • Time Capsule gives internet to Desktop but not Macbook....

Ok wizkids i am in need of your help.
last night we had a storm and it knocked all our power out and when it came back on the internet was down, i went all gun-ho assuming i could fix it messing with time capsule and my modem, no luck. a few hours later the internet is back (could see this on the modem) but Time Capsule was no longer doing it's job to send my Mac Book Pro its beautiful internet.
So here is what i have, Cable modem, to 1tb time capsule, time capsule connected to my dell desktop running XP.
I current have internet on my desktop, provided by the time capsule and can also wirelessly connect to time capsule and its files via my mac book pro, but no matter what i seem to do, i cant seem to get it to connect to the inernet via time capsule.
im wondering if it has anything to do with the DHCP settings, and what i need to enter in that section or the router, ip address areas (currently on automatic so nothing has been manually entered...)
    any help would be hot.
    thanks

This is the AirPort Graphite and Snow forum. I suggest you post in the Time Capsule forum if you want more specific help.
For what it's worth, here is how I see your situation.
Since you have working Internet on the Dell, the correct settings for acquiring an IP address from your ISP are already present, either in the Time Capsule or in the Dell. If it is the Dell that has acquired the Internet IP address from your ISP (i.e., an address other than 10.0.1.x), the same TCP/IP settings (DHCP, PPPoE or Manual) that the Dell has been using should be used instead by the Time Capsule. If DHCP, the accompanying non-automatic fields (e.g., DNS servers, client ID) might or might not need to be filled in. If PPPoE, the account name and password would need to be filled in.
The Time Capsule should be configured to share a single IP address. Both client computers should use DHCP as their TCP/IP settings (with accompanying fields blank), the Dell in its Ethernet settings and the MacBook Pro in its AirPort settings. The IP address that they acquire from the Time Capsule should have the form 10.0.1.x.
If the Dell has been acquiring the Internet IP address, the modem might need to be unplugged from power for at least 5 minutes before the Time Capsule can acquire it instead.

  • Is there a way to connect to my Time Capsule over internet from an iPad

    Hi,
Could anybody please help me configure how to connect to my Time Capsule 3TB over internet from my iPad.
I would like to use it as Cloud station over internet.
I was able to connect from my Mac on both "over internet and from my local network" using "Back to My Mac"
I was able to conncet also from my iPad from my local network.
I bought some file browser Apps which enable iPad to connect as "afp, smb" but I could'nt manage to make it work?
I made all the setting required: Enabling NAT Port Mapping, File Sharing, Sharing Disk over WAN, but without success?!
Shouldn't Apple includes and supports iPad to make such connection like "Back to My Mac" protocol.
I believe that Time Capsule is a great product, but I think Apple should consider more of software compatibilities.
    Thanks,,

    Thanks Bob,
I already tried FileBrowser and I did all the steps as per the instruction on their webpage, but alwasy give error message.
Could it be that "smb" protocol blocked by my internet provider.
I am connecting to internet using DHCP.
    Many thanks

  • How to connect my time capsule & macbook to the internet?

I purchased a Time Capsule last weekend to back up all my photos etc.  I was able to set up the Time Capsule with Airport Utility and now have my home network set up, I can easily get everything I need on my Macbook Pro (mid 2009, Mac OSX Lion 10.7.5 if that helps?) EXCEPT I can't get the time capsule to connect to the internet.  For some reason whenever I want to access my pictures or the time capsule, I have to connect to the wireless network but if I want to connect to the internet I have to reconnect to my old wireless network.  I have tried everything but just can't get it to work correctly! The Time Capsule light has only ever flashed orange at me...

time capsule should be in bridge mode and plugged into your main router so it is part of the existing network.
Bridge on you Lion version is easy as you can still download and install a real utility.

  • How to connect airport time capsule through wireless internet

Just purchased an Airport Time Capsule but having trouble to connect it through my Macbook Air using wireless. Could you please help? many thanks

Make sure the MBA has ipv6 set to link-local only for wireless.
I strongly recommend using short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    eg TCgen5 and TCwifi
In fact if you keep having wireless issues.. with the MBA in the same room as the TC, change the wireless name to TC24ghz and TC5ghz so you have different names for both bands and see if that doesn't help.. try to connect to this band and then the other.
Use WPA2 personal security.. password 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
Do not hide the wireless.. that is against the code and simply leads to issues.
If you still have issues.. post back.. does the MBA work ok on other routers or wireless access points??
