How to connect TV with limited HDMI ports?

My Panasonic Plasma TV has 2 HDMI ports. I have been using HDMI 1 for a DVD Recorder and TV linked through HDMI 2. This gave me upscaled 1080p resolution on both.
I want to move TV to the Component ports to allow me to attach a Cinema system to the HDMI 2 port. This will give the neatest solution for the TV/DVD/Cinema remotes.
Is it possible to connect a Cinema system (5.1) to HDMI 2 as I understand that this will "disable" the Component Ports.
Prior to getting the Cinema System, as an experiment I have attached TV with component cables but the picture resolution is poor, I suspect it is only 480p. Is this to be expected?
I would like the Cinema sound for normal TV and for iTunes music etc. Is this set-up possible and how is it best to set it up.
If not how best can I meet my needs?

If you connect devices to the two HDMI ports you have on your tv it should not disable your component ports on the tv, although obviously you can only select one or the other. I don't see any reason that your component only uses 480p (since you are in the UK this would actually be 576p) unless the tv's component input is limited to this resolution. Have you tried changing the video output mode from the tv.
One other option would be to employ an HDMI switch, but be aware HDMI can be troublesome when ported through a switch, if you choose this route, ask here on this forum for anyone with experience of the switch you are considering before purchasing, not all work properly. I have heard the extrememac switch is OK, but I personally have no experience.
I thought that switching TV off for a while it would reset and set up on the newly found connections. However I have invoked the Video output scan from the  Remote unit. This went through all the options from 480p, 576p, 720p, 720HD and 1080p, which were all OK. There was one hiccup when the picture exceed the Plasma height but re scanning reset this.
The pictures are now in the highest quality and all the thumbnails are now visible.
I was experimenting with alternatives as I wish to avoid HDMI switches and also by using Panasonic Cinema system means all the remotes are compatible, if not exactly interchangeable.
I will now have to decide which units give me the best set-up.
Thanks again for the help.

I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV? I have a MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter, but there are two issues with it: The new display doesn't have a VGA port, and even if it did, I wouldn't want to have my mac constantly attached to the display by a cable. I was looking for a way to use the TV as a display without any wires. Is there some type of bluetooth setup I could use? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

As I wrote above, I think you should look into the Apple TV yourself. The best place to find information about what it can and can't do and to ask your own specific questions is probably in the Apple TV forum, here:

I understand you are having issues with your HP 2711x Monitor not displaying HDMI or DVI inputs, yet it can display VGA inputs. Are these inputs all coming from the same device? Such as your computer? Does the computer's outputs show up on other devices via HDMI and DVI? If it works are you using the same cables? Are there any messages displayed on the monitors screen when you have the HDMI or DVI hooked up?

  • Hi I just got my new Apple TV and I cant figure out how to connect it with My MacBook Air (11-inch, Late 2010- Processor  1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) OSX Version 10.8

    Hi
Hi I just got my new Apple TV and I cant figure out how to connect it with My MacBook Air (11-inch, Late 2010- Processor  1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) OSX Version 10.8

Are you referring to mirroring or you just unable to set up homesharing.
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). It also requires the computer to be using wi-fi.

I have been suckered by this problem too. I had all my e-books, mostly PDFs, saved on my NAS and available in iTunes. Thanks, Apple :-(

  • How to connect Apple TV (2g) HDMI to HDTV with only component video input.

Trying to connect Apple TV (2g) HDMI to HDTV with only component video input.  Can I use a simple cable or do I need a converter box/plug? Is the HDMI signal coming from ATV encrypted or HDCP enabled?
The TV is HD, but only has a component input and not HDMI.  Apple TV 2g only has HDMI output.

    google component hdmi converter
but they are pretty expensive and may not work at all
and will not work with any DRM material as in movies you reant and maybe netflix and the sports thingy

  • MacbookPro with retina- hdmi port is not working.

I have a 15 inch macbookpro with retina and am having problems with the hdmi connection to a tv or monitor.
I connect it and all that comes up on the computer screen and device connected is a black screen with the cursor on it. The cursor moves around but it is a black screen.
I tried a television and a monitor. With different hdmi cables. Good quality cables at that.
    Any help?

Yeah, they never HEARD of the problem.  NEWSFLASH jerks, this problem is pervasive and widespread.  If you read your own forums, then you've heard of the problem.  This level of willful ignorance reminds me of a cult.  Apple will not admit how incredibly flawed their macbooks and ipads are.  Well, I'm leaving this cult.

  • Connecting 30" display to HDMI port?

i'm about to purchase a 30" screen, but as i'm not on a Mac i don't have DVI ports. i do, however, have an HDMI port. can i just use a DVI to HDMI adapter and connect it like that? if so, what plug needs to be male and what plug female?
    thanks in advance.

well, as far as i know my graphics card does support dual DVI, it just doesn't have a DVI port. does that make sense?
Does it say dual-link, not just dual?
couldn't i use this cable to do it?
    http://sewelldirect.com/hdmi-to-dvi-dual-link-cable-10-ft.asp
    If it's really a dual-link HDMI type B connector (29 pins, not 19 pins)
    <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-DefinitionMultimediaInterface>
"The Type B connector has 29 pins (21.2 mm by 4.45 mm) and can carry double the video bandwidth of Type A for use with very high-resolution future displays such as WQUXGA (3840x2400).Type B is electrically compatible with dual link DVI-D but has not yet been used in any products."
then is should work. Do you have a link to the graphics card? I have never seen one with HDMI type B.

  • How to connect Air with Thunderbolt?

How do I connect Air with Thunderbolt?
Bought Air in Oct 2011 and Thunderbolt today.
Does Mac OS X (10.6.5) work with Thunderbolt?
Do I need a special cable other than what came in box?

    Hey moxiedoggy,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you want to use Target Display Mode to use your iMac as a second screen to your MacBook Air. Since your said your MacBook Air is from 2011, it should have the thunderbolt, and you can connect the two computers using the following instructions:
Use an iMac with Thunderbolt as a display
If you have an iMac with Thunderbolt, any other Mac with Thunderbolt can use it as a display. The iMac will play both the video and audio from the other Mac.
Connect the Thunderbolt cable to the Thunderbolt ports on each computer.
Make sure both Mac computers are turned on and awake.
Press Command (⌘)-F2 on the keyboard of the external display Mac.
If you want the external display Mac to play audio as well as video from the primary Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Sound, and then click Output. Select the external display Mac from the list of devices.
You'll want to go over the requirements for using Target Display Mode here, along with other FAQs:
