How to connvert .wmv to QT for FCE

How might I go about converting a .wmv file into QT. . . . . .or whatever format can be imported into FCE? I have a short video I did using MovieMaker (not my choice) and now I want to burn it to DVD using iDVD. In searching the iDVD support site it just says a .wmv extension may require a third-party plug-in or app to be converted to another format. This site mentions Flip4mac.com but it’s $49 and talks only about converting from QT to .wmv
Any suggestions appreciated.
Lee

Below is the reply from ReelBean. A post on this site suggested this might be the case, but I was hoping for a different answer. The way I am understanding it, Flip4Mac seems to be what people use. I have little use for F4M other than this one small video. . . . . .definitely not worth $50.
Thanks for purchasing ReelBean. Here's what I think is happening. The Flip4Mac components you have in your /Library/QuickTime folder will still be the trial versions, which are causing Flip4Mac to insert the watermark. Because WMV is a Microsoft proprietary format it requires the Flip4Mac license to do anything beyond trial length conversions when exporting. Flip4Mac itself isn't a converter program, it's a couple of component files which permit other programs to do WMV converting if they are present. Until Microsoft's licensing restrictions for WMV are relaxed I think the only way around this is to purchase the Flip4Mac components.

How to import WMV file for use in adobe programs, especially After Effects and/or Premier?

I have the latest adobe creative cloud and i'm using Mac 10.8.2
My client gave me a wmv file that she wants some people blurred out in the background but when I go to import the media, it's greyed out. I'm assuming that After Effects will be the best solution for this, but maybe there is another way.
I can purchase a video converter and convert it to .mov but that costs extra money that I don't want to spend just to do this one project.

Flip4Mac WMV Player from  http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm  (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft). This will enable you to play the video. To convert it you will need the paid-for Pro version of Flip4Mac.

Any suggestions how to get my logic keyboard working properly for FCE? I can't use some of the shortcuts - insert, overwrite etc. maybe the system settings aren't correct?

This normally happens when debris builds between the trackball and the rollers on the inside of the mouse.
Turn the mouse upside down and rub the trackball vigorously on a sheet of paper or microfiber cloth to try and free it up.

  • How to import bubble captions for FCE?

I see there are plug-ins available for FCP, but I don't see anything for FCX. Any suggestions?

Almost any plugin available for FCP will also work for FCE, since they both run on the same FxScript/FxPlug plugin structure.

  • Need help setting up external hard drive for FCE project

    Hi folks,
Basically I am looking at making a 20-30 minute video this summer of my motocross adventures and what not and have equipped myself with an iMac (2.93 GHZ Core2Duo 640GB 4GB) and of course, FCE. I have tried smaller projects before (ranging in length between 20 seconds to upwards of a few minutes) but have noticed an overall decline in computer speed which I am under the impression is being caused by the 10s of GBs of video project files and what not that seem to be scrawled away within my computer. Before I made any videos, my computer was sitting around 560 GBs of free space. Since making maybe 3-4 videos (50/50 iMovie and FCE) its down below 400GBs. I'm not sure whether it's the raw video files or the projects themselves that are so large, but it's slightly frustrating. Is there any sort of software (either third party or apple) that can look at your hard drive and tell you exactly where all the biggest files are? I'll post this question in the iMac forum as I realize this is for FCE, but I thought if anyone knew of one it would be extremely helpful.
Anyways, I have a SimpleDrive 320GB external HD that I plan to use as my external for making this project within FCE and would like some help in terms of how to set it up with FCE, what are the best settings etc. It is currently formatted with Windows, so I will also need help in setting it up for a Mac. I do have about 120GBs used on it already and was also wondering if I could keep this when re-formatting, but I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to that.
Sorry for the long-winded post; any information on this or something related would be fantastic. Thanks.

Yes, you can use your external HD with FCE ... provided it is formatted as +Mac OS Extended+ and is connected via FireWire.
You will need to back up any data that is on the drive that you want to keep. Before reformatting it. Formatting erases everything that is on the drive.
Use Disk Utility (located in your +Applications > Utilities+ folder) to format the drive.
After formatting the drive, go into +FCE > System Settings+ and change your FCE scratch disk location to the external drive.

  • How to converting WMV files?

How to converting WMV files from PC to iPod playable files? thanks for all your help

I just found this tip on allexperts.com...
I'm on a windows box at work, so I cant verify the accuracy.
I have one at home...name escapes me right now...icon is a blue square with 5 black dots (like on a die). It converts audio formats, video formats, extracts audio from video, and will batch process.
Maybe someone will recognize the desciption and be able to name it.

    heres one on apples site:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/audio/switchfileformatconverterformac.html
    =======
Tunes will convert wma to mp3 (or acc) format. Here are the instructions:
To convert a song's file format:
Choose iTunes > Preferences, then click the Advanced button at the top of the window and click Importing.
From the Import Using pop-up menu, choose the encoding format that you want to convert the song to, then click OK to save the settings.
Select one or more songs in your library, then choose Advanced > Convert Selection to MP3, Convert Selection to AAC, Convert Selection to Apple Lossless, Convert Selection to AIFF, or Convert Selection to WAV. (The menu item changes to show what's selected in your Importing preferences.)
To convert all the songs in a folder or on a disk, hold down the Option key and choose Advanced > "Convert Selection to," then choose the folder or disk containing the songs you want to convert. All the songs in the folder or on the disk will be converted except songs you purchased from the iTunes Store. (Purchased songs are encoded using a protected AAC format that prevents them from being converted.)

  • Why is so hard for FCE or iMovie to read AVCHD files?

I have some AVCHD files (.MTS) on a hard disk. No camera. And no, the directory format has not been preserved. The files were just copied, and renamed for backup purposes. "Log and Transfer..." in FCE gives me an error about the directory structure. And I can't import with iMovie (just won't let me select the files.)
Now, I think I would have a better chance of finding a solution, if I knew why Final Cut Express 4 or iMovie 7.1.1 can only read the AVCHD file format from the camera directly, or when the directories are setup in a particular way.
Why can't it just read the file? Like how any program can read a JPEG without having to plug-in a camera or create a folder called "PRIVATE" or whatever?
I've wasted several hours on this problem today, and the the only conclusion i can come up with is that Apple has some seriously incompetent or just plain lazy engineers.
There must be a proper technical reason... right?

    Hi -
    Jason Moore3 wrote:
It's just so weird that all FCE and iMovie can read the files - they just require you to "connect the camera". Why is the camera so important to reading the file?
It's not. It's just an easy way to insure that when FCE or iMovie are looking at the file storage directory, FCE or iMovie will see all the files, the metadata, the media, etc.. It also makes for an easier work flow- just plug in the camera, no need to off-load files and remember where the are stored, etc.. And, it helps develop a workflow where people are not just copying the media files to another disk without the metadata, as in your case, or make a mistake and copy the metadata without the media.
Imagine this: three big tractor trailers pull up outside your house loaded with stuff. As you go out to meet them a driver hands you a small package. You open it up, and inside is a complete description of what is packed, how each item is packed, where each item is in the container, and how best to unpack the containers for the easiest installation in your house. That is what the metadata does. Could you unpack the containers without it? Yes. Is it the optimal way? No.
Many threads discuss how it's possible to backup the whole directory and making a disk image and then "tricking" iMovie/FCE into reading the files, which leads me to think that this stupidity is intentional.
This is not a trick. iMovie has the "Archive All" button on the import window. To later access those files you would use the menu File > Import > Camera Archive. In FCE, where one would expect a slightly more computer savvy user, you can use Disk Utility to create a disk image of the contents of the camcorder files, then later, use Log and Transfer from within FCE to import the footage from that disk image.
Someone doesn't want people to actually have a HD video format that is easy to work with (OMG pirates!!) and so it's been crippled to make it a PITA to work with.
Hmmm, well, all you have to do is follow the recommended workflow - connect the camera, import the footage, and edit. FCE and iMovie take care of the footage conversion from AVCHD which is a format incredibly difficult to edit in to a format that allows easy editing, all without user intervention.
The end result is, I can't view my own content.
The system Apple developed of converting AVCHD to either AIC or Pro Res is probably the best way to make the editing process as painless as possible for the end user.
Having said that, Sony Vegas, a windows application, will natively edit AVCHD files, without any conversion. I don't have any experience with it so can't say what the experience is like, but it might be an alternative for you if the iMovie/FCE workflow is not working for you.
    Hope this helps.

  • Title with transparent background for FCE

I want to place my titles over photos and I can't figure out how to export/save them with no background. When I searched the topic someone suggested un-checking "Render Background" in the file requester when you export your LiveType movie. Now for some reason it is not giving me the option to 'Export Movie', only to 'Export Frame'. What's up?

Live Type needs to Render the Movie, (cmd-R) before you can export the movie.
Although when you render the movie it gets exported as a .mov in the animation codec which has the alpha channel that allows you to place your titles over photos.
Of course once you render your movie you can export it in another codec if you like., but you don't really need to for FCE.
You do need to make sure that you don't render the background though

  • Titles for FCE 3.5

I have recently purchased FCE 3.5 in preperation for film school (using FCE to learn the baisics)
Just a question to any experts out there, is it possible to create titles like the ones that apear at the begining of the tutorial dvd that comes with FCE? they are kind of the same as the titles used in the most recent Final Cut Studio promo video. the text flys / fades in, holds but rotates slowly then fades out (in the demo reel it spins round, looks bit too complex for FCE).
It looks awesome, its probably created using Motion but just wanted to know if its possible (or anything like it) without Motion.
    Thanks.

I haven't seen the demo you refer to but, by using Title3D and Motion Keyframes, you can do the kind of movements you are talking about.
In FCE, ignore the motion pane you may see with your Title3D titles; they don't work in this program. But you can create a title and use Motion Keyframes to move it around.
You also, with FCE 3, have Livetype, an even more sophisticated titling program. It comes with tons of "pre-made" title anims plus gives you the option to create your own
I would suggest you search your FCE manuals for Motion Keyframes to get an idea of how that works, and also, go thru Livetype; not that difficult to use

  • Can anyone recommend a camcorder for FCE HD?

    Hello.
I want to get better picture quality and better output using FCE. I am currently using a Sony mini DV and want to move on to using SD cards for ease of use more than any other reason. I'm a little apprehensive about just going out and spending money on a new camcorder only to find out that FCE does not recognise the footage or leaves me with extensive rendering etc.
I have a brand new 27" imac and a budget of around £500 for the camcorder.
Any recommendations and reviews greatly appreciated. This Apple list of compatible cameras is a little vague and quite short, I don't know how often they test new cameras etc.
    Thanks.

Sony or Panasonic work just fine.
You must get a camera that produces standard AVCHD and interlaced footage.
Alot of cameras can produce progressive and interlaced and simply require configuring for direct use for FCE.
I use a Panasonic HDC-SDT750 with no problems. The 700 series are fine.
Newer models and names change regularly, so if you have got a short list in mind post them here and we can advise on specific models and suitablilty with FCE.

  • Colored Textures for FCE HD such as Saving private Ryan, Brother where art

Wondering if anyone can tell me how to get a certain effect for a project.
I would like to use different colors, Cool Blue, Slight tan/sepia - War Look, etc.
I know Magic Bullet has software but Only for FCP...
Can I create this on my own in FCE HD?
I tried the tint but it just isn't getting it. I would like to maintain the talents skin tone as normal but have the backgrounds tinted...hope this makes sense.
    Thanks
    TIM

Why not ask in the Final Cut EXPRESS forum? All we know here is FCP.
And FYI, Saving Private Ryan, Oh Brother, Band of Brothers...the overall color was applied to everything, including the skin color. But you need a good plugin that makes it look right, because the TINT option just doesn't quite do it.
Hmmm...try the Nattress Film Effects...www.nattress.com. There is a demo. See if it will work with FCE.
There are presets in there like the Sepia looks...a bunch just like MB.

  • Good HD camera for FCE - Sanyo? Canon? Sony?

I'm looking for a good HD camera for FCE (1920 × 1080 pixels; no tape, no HDD--just Memory).
Is anyone here using the Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD1010?
I could only find sample videos of the older HD1000 here:
    http://www.sanyo-dsc.com/products/lineup/dmx_hd1000/feature/02/index.html
Is the quality of the HD1010 better?
Or can someone recommend Canon (HF100?) or Sony?
    Thanks!

  • Looking for FCE Video Filter - "Old Movie"

I'm creating a movie where I would like to have the footage look "old"; where the film may be scratched or discolored, maybe even some dropped frames, etc...
I went through all of the video filters on FCE and didn't see anything that got me this effect. (unless I overlooked something or have to use Sepia + ?)
Any recommendations on how to accomplish this?
    Thanks for the help!
    Power Mac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

It is in the QuickTime filters which you access via :-
    File>Export Using QT Conversion>Options>Filter>Special Effects.
There you will find a number of effects including the old film look, which you can customise with hairs, scratches, dust and film fading.

  • Film-Like Look Settings for FCE

    Hi all --
I did a search but couldn't find anything on this topic ...
How can I get a "film-like" look of my footage (shot in 24p) using Final Cut Express? What settings for color balance, hue, contrast, etc, work best to get that film-esque look & feel? Are there any plugins for FCE that can be used (that don't cost and arm and a leg)?
    Thanks for your help!

You can download some free "technicolor" filters here ......... I don't know whether it's what you are looking for:
