How to Consolidate library + Keep Playlists

Hi
I've unsuccessfully searched for a solution to my problem and could find it in this forum. Would really appreciate any help!
I've collected a large amount of MP3s (over 300 Gigs) from different sources and got spread out in different hard drives and folders...My itunes library was linked to all these separate folders and then I bought this new hard drive to consolidate all of them into one place. When doing that I made a stupid mistake and renamed an older hard drive... therefore thousands of Itunes tracks got unlinked to their original files (the annoying ! sign).
I'd like to be able to do a "mass relink" to the all the files now consolidated into a single hard drive, but I'd like to keep all my library and playlists intact (since I worked on them for years). Any ideas on how to do that easily? Obviously I won't manually relink song by song, that would take an eternity... so if any of you know the solution to this you'll be my life savior!
Thanks to all in advance, an help will be greatly appreciated!

It has been moved, Som2k7.
In iTunes 8, go to the iTunes File menu > Library > Consolidate Library.

  • How to Restore Library and Playlists to Newly Wiped Hard Drive

Due to Windows problem, I had to reformat my hard drive.
Before I did, I copied the entire My Documents folder, including My Music and the iTunes music files and the My Playlist text files to a second hard drive - the D drive - in the same tree structure as they existed on the C drive.
I do NOT want the music files on the C: Drive - I want the music files on the new D: storage drive. I want iTunes on the C drive but knowing the music files are on the D drive.
I installed the iPod disc onto the newly cleaned C: Drive and downloaded iTunes ver 6.
Now I would like to have my iTunes library and playlists back just as they were but I am confused over the ADD FILE and ADD FOLDER commands.
Add Folder appears to copy the full music files back to the C Drive, which I do not want.
Add File appears to add the meta data, the library list, and
the playlists to iTunes, but when you go to play a track, the program says it cannot do so because it can't find the music file. To tell each track the new location of the music file listed means I would have to edit over 1200 line items -- even though I already told the program where the
    music files would be.
Before trying to add the library and playlists as files, I went into EDIT, Prefences, Advanced and changed the iTunes folder location from
    c:\mydocuments\mymusic\itunes\itunesmusic to
    D:\mydocuments\mymusic\itunes\itunesmusic
Earlier I had used the Add Folder option and it copied all the music files to the C: drive. I had to delete them and
    try something else.
What must I do to transfer just the meta data and keep the actual music files on the D drive?

The XML file is less important (See the link that Katrina provided above).
First re-install the iTunes program (if you have not already).
Make sure that the music folders and files are copied to the exact same location they were in prior to the PC Restore. If they were running on the C: drive, you'll need to place them there at first, then move them within iTunes.
Then copy the original ITL file you saved into the 'iTunes' folder, replacing the newly created (and smaller) ITL file that was created when you reinstalled iTunes.
Open iTunes and the Library should be as it was prior to the Restore.
To move the files to your D: drive keeping iTunes 'informed' see this link:

  • Computer crashed- all new now. How to bring library and playlists from Ipod

My PC crashed and was pronounced DOA. All library and playlists were and still are on Ipod Classic (20GB). Obviously wasn't able to follow directions for normal transfer of lib. and p.lists as event not planned. Built completely new PC and loaded up Itunes. I had all my music library backed up on an external and can load, but is there any way I can save my 50 meticulously created playlists back into Itunes? Please say "Yes"!

Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.

  • How to consolidate library in new iTunes

Since the new iTunes with the Genius, I don't know where the option to consolidate the library is. It's really annoying, anyone know?

    It has been moved, Som2k7.
In iTunes 8, go to the iTunes File menu > Library > Consolidate Library.

  • How to consolidate library in itunes 11?. Can't find the option

I can see only 2 options in the library menu, one for home sharing and one artwork.
Where has the consolidate button disappeared to?

There used to be auto-consolidation in iTunes 10 (and earlier), and in iTunes 11 Preferences > Advanced you are still offered check-box options for "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library", which together should effectively (to my mind) auto-consolidate anything you add to your iTunes library.
However, this seems at least slightly broken in iTunes 11.  I ripped some video using Handbrake from DVD to Dekstop, then added it to iTunes, but iTunes was just referencing the files on the Desktop and did not automatically "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" as I discovered when I deleted the files from the Desktop and suddenly iTunes couldn't find them anymore!
After re-ripping and re-adding the files to iTunes, I confirmed this by asking iTunes to "Show in Finder", and it showed me the files on the Desktop. Only after using the explicit File > Library > Organize Library command did iTunes finally copy the files to iTunes Media folder.
I have not tried adding new audio files to iTunes 11 yet, so I don't know if this bug (for bug it seems!) affects only video files or all files, etc.

  • How to transfer itunes library to external drive and keep playlists and ratings

I don't have much space on my laptop. I have attached an external drive. I want to access my Itunes library from
the external drive.  All attempts to move the library now result in me losing my "playlists"  and even more importantly
    my ratings and genre information.
How can I move the library with all my associated data intact such as the playlists, ratings, genres?
I want this external drive to be the main location where I access my Itunes library.
Once that is done I will work on backing it up, as that will be the only place that the data exists.
Also, will my Apple TV be also be able to access my Itunes library with playlists. thus far I have not been able to do this.

Start by consolidating your library. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Consolidating your library - Windows
Then copy the iTunes Folder to your external drive. Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
Disconnect your external drive and connect it to your new computer, copy the iTunes folder to the new pc. When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the default location on the new computer. On a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\ (or C:\Username\Music\ in Vista). You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
Once you have copied everything over hold down the Shift key in Windows when opening iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. Navigate to where you placed the copy of the library file and open it up: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them. Also if you are disposing of the old one remember to deauthorise it so you don't use up one of your allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

I am trying to move my library and playlists to a new computer by burning to CD's. However, I followed the directions by going to File and then Library - then they said to go to burn CD(s) - I DO NOT have that option for some reason. How do I do this? I have done the library sharing thing but I am getting rid of my primary computer and am afraid I will lose the library.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

How can I transfer my iTunes library and playlists from one computer to another?

  • HT2736 How can I send a playlist from my library to my friend?

How can I send a playlist from my Library to my friends phone.  She uses itunes on her phone. I thought that itunes used to do that, I remember it being somewhere on the program. Now when I would like to do it I can't find it.

First get iTunes on your PC. Then plug your iPod in and go to the music, yo. You Cannot sync playlist if you select to sync your entire library. But you can sync playlists of you choose to sync selected songs.
You can also create a playlist on your iPod just by holding the center button on a song and select add to "on the go". This " on the go" is a playlist and will be transfers to your PC if you plug your iPod in again.

  • How do I transfer one playlist from my itunes library to my ipod?

How do I transfer one playlist from my itunes library to my ipod. I do not want to sync my whole library music. I tried to set to *manually managing music* and drag the playlist. Doesn't work. If I try to sync *selected playlists* it wants to delete all the other music that I have on my ipod.
    Any suggestions?

Ha, it worked. Thank you anyways!

  • How to keep playlists in sync between two computers?

I have a MacBook Pro and a regular desktop Windows 7, and I have all of my music on both of them. However, I constantly keep adding new songs to different playlists all the time, and this makes it hard to keep everything in sync with both computers and my iPod because I usually sync from my Mac.
Right now I export the updated playlists on one of the computers and import it on the other, but it's quite the hassle just to keep some playlists in sync. I tried using home sharing, but it just keeps downloading duplicates everytime I try to import, I would've thought it was smarter by just adding the new songs but appearently it isn't.
So, anyways, is there any easy way for me to automatically keep playlists in sync between two computers?

I am indeed subscribed to iTunes Match.  Are you saying that with Match, it will sync my playlists?  I will have to check this when I get home.  That would really be a nice surprise!
I sync my iPod to iTunes on my Windows 7 box, but use iTunes on my Mac for synching my iPhone 6 and iPad 2.  Normally, I'd be modifying a playlist on the Win 7 box, adding or rearranging songs.  However, occasionally, I might download a song to the iPhone while out and about.  Then, when I'm back at the Mac, I'd do a sync and add that new song to one of the playlists.  Should Match then be keeping the playlists on the two machines in sync?
As for the library replication, I had to do that when I first signed up for Match.  I was WAY over the 25k song limit, so I made a copy of the library, and in that copy deleted enough songs to get me under the limit.  Also discovered scripting and did some really neat things with that tool.  Still have the option when I start iTunes to use the old library, just in case there's something there I need to copy to the smaller lib.
