Hi,
I totally agree with Mahir. And I just want to share one thing:
Use %U to generate guaranteed unique names :
For backupsets, %U means: %u_%p_%c
For an image copy of a datafile, %U means: data-D-%d_id-%I_TS-%N_FNO-%f_%u
For an image copy of an archived redolog, %U means: arch-D_%d-id-%I_S-%e_T-%h_A-%a_%u
For an image copy of a control file, %U means: cf-D_%d-id-%I_%u
Thank you

Is database using File system, RAW devices or ASM?
Hi there
Is is possible to find out if the database is using File system, RAW devices or ASM for storage?
I think for ASM, we can tell by querying the V$DATAFILE view if it has ' DATA ' or something like that (a name that has ' ' prefixed to it). Is this the only way? How about other sotrage types (RAW and Filesystem)?
Thanks in advance!user12033597 wrote:

Raw depends on your OS - in *nix, likely something like /dev/sdc1
ASM depends on ASM and will include + and will follow an ASM pattern, such as described http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/clauses004.htm
File depends on OS - in *nix, likely start with a '/' and NOT be in /dev or /proc. In Winders start with C:\ or some other disk path.
Nicely discussed in the docs in the Administrators Guide found at http://tahiti.oracle.com -
Hi,
I am assigning raw devices to ASM on IBM-AIX 5.2. But the devices are not visible in ASM. Please somebody help me how to identify the disks in ASM or from AIX to check whether the disks are accessiable. I am able to ls -lrt and find the disk. but not able to identify the raw disk size
Thanks for your helpIn some OSs raw devices are only visible to root unless the permissions are explicitly reset.
Have you read the appropriate section in the RAC install guide for AIX? (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b14201/storage.htm#BABHCGIJ) -

ASMLIB is not mandatory to use the raw device with ASM. Its an "add-on" to improve the performance, that's all!Not really a performance improvement as it cannot make ASM I/O go any faster - it is a more a management driver that enables you to manage ASM disks/LUNs via an ASM command line interface. But as you said, it is not mandatory. I personally prefer using udev and multipath directly on Linux for configuring and maintaining device names and permissions for all disks and LUNs and not treat ASM ones differently via another interface.
Also, as ASMlib is a kernel module, it is another moving part at boot time. It needs to match the kernel version used. It and other similar kernel drives need to "+play nice+" with one another. And this is the primary reason we've stopped using ASMlib after we first tried it with 10.1 RAC. There were incompatibilities between it and a vendor kernel driver, resulting in adhoc ASM I/O errors. And the Metalink Note at the time stated that there are no incompatibilities between ASMlib and such vendors drivers... (and I did request Support to amend that note after the incompatibility was identified via a SR, but it never was). -

ASM cannot find the raw devices nor ASM drives
Hi,
We are trying to use ASM on linux. The kernel version is
2.6.9-42.0.10.0.1.ELsmp x86_64.
We tried both raw devices and ASM drives. But after all the tries, the installer simply will not list the disks.
Anybody can help? Thanks."I had installed ASM initially on the same CRS, but due to some error during the installation"
This statement means: I had installed ASM on the clusterware, but due to time synchronization error, it didn't got copied on to the 2nd node, and hence I had to uninstall the ASM software.
But the clusterware is still up and running.

SVM with QFS and a don´t know how growing a File Systems
Hello Experts
Please, Could some help me. I have a SVM with QFS and a don´t know how growing a File Systems in this configuration.
can someone help me or share me a doc that would help me to do it?
Thanks a Lot
Joao Paulo ( email address removed by moderator so that you don't get spammed for all Eternity )I'm guessing that you mean a QFS file system built using SVM volumes? You want to grow a filesystem on these volumes?
- How to grow the volumes depends on how they're built; this would require seeing either the command that built them or metastat -c for them. You have to expand each column of the volume equally if it is a striped volume type.
- To extend the file system, you need to stop using it, edit the MCF properly to add the next extents, and then extend the file system. See the samgrowfs man page for details.
I realize this isn't a definitive answer, but it's not possible to give you one without seeing the metastat output and the QFS MCF file. -
How to delete file systems from a Live Upgrade environment
How to delete non-critical file systems from a Live Upgrade boot environment?
Here is the situation.
I have a Sol 10 upd 3 machine with 3 disks which I intend to upgrade to Sol 10 upd 6.
Current layout
Disk 0: 16 GB:
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 1.9G /
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s1 692M /usr/openwin
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s3 7.7G /var
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s4 3.9G swap
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s5 2.5G /tmp
Disk 1: 16 GB:
/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s0 7.7G /usr
/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s1 1.8G /opt
/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s3 3.2G /data1
/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s4 3.9G /data2
Disk 2: 33 GB:
/dev/dsk/c0t2d0s0 33G /data3
The data file systems are not in use right now, and I was thinking of
partitioning the data3 into 2 or 3 file systems and then creating
a new BE.
However, the system already has a BE (named s10) and that BE lists
all of the filesystems, incl the data ones.
# lufslist -n 's10'
boot environment name: s10
This boot environment is currently active.
This boot environment will be active on next system boot.

I browsed the Solaris 10 Installation Guide and the man pages
for the lu commands, but can not find how to remove the data
file systems from the BE.
How do I do a live upgrade on this system?
Thanks for your help. Thanks for the tips.
I commented out the entries in /etc/vfstab, also had to remove the files /etc/lutab and /etc/lu/ICF.1
and then could create the Boot Environment from scratch.
I was also able to create another boot environment and copied into it,
but now I'm facing a different problem, error when trying to upgrade.
# lustatus
Boot Environment Is Active Active Can Copy
Name Complete Now On Reboot Delete Status
s10 yes yes yes no -
s10u6 yes no no yes - Now, I have the Solaris 10 Update 6 DVD image on another machine
which shares out the directory. I mounted it on this machine,
did a lofiadm and mounted that at /cdrom.
# ls -CF /cdrom /cdrom/boot /cdrom/platform
/cdrom:
Copyright boot/

/cdrom/boot:
hsfs.bootblock sparc.miniroot
/cdrom/platform:

# luupgrade -u -n s10u6 -s /cdrom
ERROR: The media miniroot archive does not exist </cdrom/boot/x86.miniroot>.
ERROR: Cannot unmount miniroot at </cdrom/Solaris_10/Tools/Boot>.I find it strange that this sparc machine is complaining about x86.miniroot.
BTW, the machine on which the DVD image is happens to be x86 running Sol 10.
I thought that wouldn't matter, as it is just NFS sharing a directory which has a DVD image.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks. -
How to use file system replacing optical archive?
We do not have IXOS (OT) yet.
However I have configured everything for printlist archiving and early archiving for IXOS (on the R3 side ONLY!)
May I modify the procedure a bit so that the archive will be stored in the file system instead of the
optical device since we do not have IXOS yet.
Please help. Thanks!hi,
Create Queues
In this customizing activity you create queues and specify the queue administrator. This process should become part of the installation routine of the storage system, because not activating a queue can lead to irreparable errors (and may mean having to repeat print list creation and storage).
Example
CARA Queue: Queue in which the spool writes the storage requests.
Activities
You can create queues for the following functions:
Asynchronous storage (CARA-Queue)
Error in asynchronous storage (CARA_E-Queue)
Storage confirmation (CFBC-Queue)
Error in storage confirmation (CFBC_E-Queue)
Asynchronous retrieval (CFBA-Queue)
Error in asynchronous retrieval (CFBA_E-Queue)
You can also define a queue administrator.
Also u can check in archivelinking.
Edit Links
In this customizing activity, you link a document type to an object type, a content repository, and a link table. This has the following effect on documents of this document type:
The documents can only be linked to instances of the specified business object type.
The link entry is entered in the specified link table.
The documents are always stored in the specified content repository.
Activities
Enter the following data:
Object type:
Business object type that exists in the business object repository (transaction SWO3).
One object type can be used with more than one document type.
Document type
Name of a document type specified in the customizing activity Document types .
Status
X: The storage system is active.
Empty: The storage system is not active.
Content repository ID
Two-digit identification number that you have entered in the customizing activity Maintain Content Repositories .
Link table
Name of the table, in which ArchiveLink enters the link entries between stored documents and the corresponding application documents.
SAP supplies the following link tables:
TOA01, TOA02, TOA03 (general link tables),
TOAHR (only for documents from the SAP HR application component),
and
TOADL (only for print lists).
Alternatively, you can define your own link tables. To do this, enter the customizing activity Maintain available link tables. Here you can also find a description of the link tables supplied by SAP.
Retention period
Number of months the entry for the stored document remains in the link table before it is deleted.

Raw Device and ASM configuration
Can any body send me steps/commands to configrue Raw device and then ASM on top of it for RAC?
Try this:

Resized partitions how to fix file system to new size.
So I had to resize my /boot partition which required me to resize my root partition. How do I fix the file system to match the new size of the partition?
I do not understand why this was moved? This is not a new install, I was tuning my hooks to use systemd replaceing udev, autodetect and base.
running
mkinitcpio -p Linux
resulted in an error that said there was not enough space. and that the image was probably not correctly made.
I based my decision on the placement of the post by the following post which seemed to be in the same category.

How to set file system in WebLogic 6.0?
I've been using WebLogic 5.1 and there I have a 'file system' declared in
weblogic.properties file:
weblogic.io.fileSystem.testFS=/home/test/testing
Is there similar thing in version 6.0?
I didn't find it from properties mapping table.
I've been using it (the filesystem) to fetch files from the server.
If there is some other way to get files from server to client I would
appreciate any information. If you access your console , on the LHS you will
find FileT3 option under Services section. From there
you can File systems.

How to restore file system of the previous backup from OSB using webtool?
Dear all,
I have some problem regarding to the file system restoration.
For example, I have backed up some files yesterday and today those files have been made change.
So tomorrow I am planning to restore the files from the yesterday backup (the original files before made changes) to other host for testing the data.
Is it possible to do that, since when i restore i can see only the latest ones and search options during restoration are not working well (as date, date range,.....) ?
Your reply to me is very important.
Thanks and regards,
RasmeyThere is no recovery partition on drives which haven't had 10.7 or 10.8 installed. You need to use a Mac OS X install DVD to restore the backup.

is it possible using UFS data structure and function in

or i need to create file system access function based on DDI/DKI?Short answer is "you cannot".
The longer one is "see topics in this forum" - there was an exhaustive discussion about this issue...
The thead "File I/O from withing a driver" in Driver Development forum may be of particular interest.
