How to convert FLAC to Apple Lossless

how to convert FLAC to Apple Lossless

Handbrake really is only for converting video and the audio attached to that video. With that said, there are many efficient ways to do this, personally, I am perfectly content just converting the file into a .wav files (it has the same 1411kbps), however you will have to re-tag everything. If you don't want to re-tag everything you can aslo just convert to .alac using Foobar2000 (Windows).
Also, if the reason that you don't want to keep it as a .flac files is because your iPod doesn't support it, if it is a Classic, then you can just install Rockbox and it supports .flac natively.

  • How to convert FLAC to Apple Lossless Encoder

    hi
How can I convert FLAC audio files to Apple Lossless Encoder in order to be able to import them into itunes and listen them in my ipod at maximum quality.
If you know a way to make the ipod read FLAC files it would be better but I'm not confident that this exist. I have just install fluke so itunes now reads FLAC. but not the ipod
    thanks

    What Are FLAC and ALAC?
FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec), as its name suggested, is a free lossless audio codec. FLAC can compress audio to about 50~60% without any quality loss. This format has been widely accepted by many Hi-Fi systems and audiophiles.
Apple Lossless, also known as Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC), or Apple Lossless Encoder (ALE), is an audio compressing format, developed by Apple Inc. for lossless data compression of digital music. After initially keeping it proprietary from its inception in 2004, in late 2011 Apple made the codec available open source and royalty-free. Traditionally, Apple has referred to the codec as Apple Lossless, though more recently they have begun to use the abbreviated term ALAC when referring to the codec.
Here is a step by step guide on how to convert FLAC to ALAC. It also introduces a way to convert FLAC to many other audio formats like MP3, WAV, AAC, AC3, M4A, etc and vice versa.

  • How to Convert iTunes Songs (Apple lossless audio file) to a MP3 for E-mail

How to Convert iTunes Songs (Apple lossless audio file) to a MP3 for E-mail?
My computer is Windows 7 and my Itunes software version is 1.0.2
    Many thanks in advance...

iTunes 1.0.2 is +at least+ eight years old.
The current version is 9.2, and it's free.
If that was a typo, and you're using something more current:
In the iTunes preferences, change the import settings to mp3.
Then select the songs you wish to convert.
From the "Advanced" menu, choose "Create mp3 version".
When done, change the import settings back to Apple Lossless.
    That's it.
BTW, this is the Logic Pro forum, which has absolutely nothing to do with iTunes.

  • How to convert WAV to Apple Lossless?

I just bought an Ipod and have all my music on my computer in WAV format. Could someone please describe how do I convert to Apple Lossless? It isn't descrtibed in the manual.
    Gerry

Although the AAC format gives excellent audio reproduction with minimal compression a word of warning: if you have any other mp3 players (non ipod) it is unlikely that they will recognise and therefore be able to replay this fairly apple specific format. Further more if you wish to play these files on a pc which is not running itunes, it is likey that you will have to download an aac codec in order for them to be recognised. Although recognised as an "inferior" format mp3 (lame)is a much more portable compression and therefore will play on 99% of pc's/mac's/mp3 players. If you convert your wav files to a mp3 bit rate of >192kb/s I don't think you will notice a difference in audio quality. iTunes allows you to rip to an mp3 encode, just select it from the drop down list rather than the aac and select a bit rate of 192kb/s (or more) from the setting tab, the default is 128kb/s. Your mp3 encoded files will also take less space on your ipod.
Just thought you may like to know of further options...

  • How can i convert my whole library to flac or apple lossless

how do i convert my whole library to flac or apple lossless?!!?!!?!?!?!

First, FLAC is not supported by iTunes and the same probably applies to the iPod.
Second, are all your files currently in AIFF or WAV format, or on CDs?  If you have mp3 files or AAC files the only thing that will happen by you converting them to lossless is you will use up more space for the music with no gain in quality.  Quality is lost when you convert to mp3 or AAC and converting it to lossless won't get it back.
It looks like current ipods support Apple Lossless.  Still, the whole idea behind ipods is to use compressed format so you can fit on the most music.  Read http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=85227
If after doing all that you still want Apple Lossless, you need to set the preferences to ALAC in your iTunes preferences, then convert with the Advanced menu command.  Mind you, I use an older iTunes so you may have to explore a bit to find where they have those features now.  This conversion will place a copy of the file in iTunes in the new format but also leave the old one there, so you'll need to delete the old ones if you don't want them.

  • Converting files to Apple Lossless without keeping originals

Can someone let me know if it is possible to convert files to Apple Lossless without actually keeping the original file. I converted all my files and now my whole library is duplicated! Also need to kneo the quickest way to erase all my duplicated files.

Just a note: you don't say what format the tracks were that you converted, but unless they were AIFF or lossless WAV, there was no point in converting them to Apple Lossless. Once you have a "lossy" format such as AAC or MP3, data is thrown away and there's no way to get the lost data/quality back. So if it was MP3, AAC, WMA or compressed WAV tracks, converting them to Lossless gets you nothing but larger file sizes.
You might already know this, but just wanted to mention it.
    Regards.

  • FLAC vs Apple Lossless file sizes

I've been looking into moving up to lossless audio files. From what I've been able to discover, FLAC and Apple Lossless should be roughly the same file size, but I downloaded a 24-bit/44.1kHz FLAC from the Bowers & Wilkins site (about half-way down the page - search for Portico) which is 35MB. I transcoded it to Apple Lossless using Max and the resulting file is 62MB - 77% larger!!
Does this seem right? Is the compression level variable for FLAC and/or Apple Lossless (as there is for ZIP for example)? There's no such option in Max.

Hmm, interesting. MediaInfo reports the following:
    Apple Lossless:
    Audio
    ID : 1
    Format : ALAC
    Codec ID : alac
Codec ID/Info : Apple Lossless Audio Codec
    Duration : 5mn 34s
    Duration_LastFrame : -49ms
    Bit rate mode : Variable
    Bit rate : 1 484 Kbps
    Channel(s) : 2 channels
    Sampling rate : 44.1 KHz
    Bit depth : 24 bits
    Stream size : 59.1 MiB (100%)
    Language : English
    Encoded date : UTC 2037-05-12 23:52:44
    Tagged date : UTC 2037-05-12 23:52:44
    FLAC
    Audio
    Format : FLAC
Format/Info : Free Lossless Audio Codec
    Duration : 5mn 34s
    Bit rate mode : Variable
    Bit rate : 840 Kbps
    Channel(s) : 2 channels
    Sampling rate : 44.1 KHz
    Bit depth : 24 bits
    Stream size : 33.4 MiB (100%)
    Writing library : libFLAC 1.2.1 (UTC 2007-09-17)
So, same bit depth and sampling rate, but the bit-rate for the Apple Lossless is much higher than the FLAC.
In XLD I have "same as original" for bit-rate and sample frequency.
I've found some more free FLAC download samples at NaimLabel (panel on the right about half way down) and when I transcode these to Apple Lossless the files are the same size as the FLACs, give or take, so I guess these aren't as compressed?

Yes. However I personally find it easier and more reliable on a Mac.
For Windows considers the following, Foobar 2000 with iTunesEncode, I believe the free version of dbPowerAmp can also do this with a plugin. Other than that Super see http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html can do this and many other conversions but is not aimed at handling music files and as such is likely to not preserve the tags.
The best tool is XLD for Mac.

  • How to play FLAC and Other Lossless Formats on iTunes for Windows Vista x64

    Is it possible?
    If so, how?

iTunes cannot play FLAC or any other lossless format other than Apple Lossless or WAV. If your tracks are in FLAC or another format, you'll have to convert them with another utility to a format iTunes can support: AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, or Apple Lossless.

  • How do i keep my apple lossless files when I use iTunes match?

When I started using iTunes Match, my Apple Lossless and aiff lossless files were converted to lower quality 256 files in iTunes on my mac.  How do I stop this from happening?  I want to keep the Lossless files as they are.
    Thanks
    Bud

    Sorry ......  but .....
Would it make a difference when I used iMatch ....  I started the service the day it was made available.  Was it an original issue and has since been corrected?
-iTunes and the music files were on my iMac internal Hard Drive.  Only 1 iTunes Library.
-No alternate iTunes libraries were created ergo match not turned on to an alterante.
-The original files were added to the iTunes Library from an external hard drive ... which were copied to my internal hard drive by iTunes.  (Advanced tab feature)  The external backup drive (4TB Seagate Mac Drive) is only connected when I use it to backup physical files.  I do not use a backup program.  Everything is copied its own folder.  Most files were ripped from my cd's i.e. to the external Drive using XLD.  Not one pirated file. a few HD albums purchased from HD Tracks.
-I even tried re-adding some of the Original FLAC files to iTunes again.  They were physical in my iTunes on the internal hard drive.  They were also replaced.
The fact is .... The Original Files were altered.  They had not been deleted and replaced, they were altered. They were the original files on my internal hard drive.  Only 1 copy of iTunes is on the computer.

  • FLAC to Apple Lossless

Any way to do this? I got a rather huge FLAC library from my PC which I want to convert to Apple Lossless so I can listen to them on my Mac.

After reading this post I decided to try XLD (X Lossless Decoder - website) and did the following steps:
I downloaded xld-gui-20120609.tar.bz2 from the site
    I unpacked it
I executed the XLD application from that folder
in the preferences panel that popped up I selected 'Apple Lossles' as the output format.
under File - Open I chose the FLAC files I wanted to convert
    done
It took me less then a minute to do so and worked on Lion. iTunes accepted the files.

I have downloaded hi-def formats at Linn Records; the quality is outstanding, but their selection is limited. I'm also a member of B&W's Society of Sound; A Peter Gabriel curated Music club that get's me one London Symphony Orchestra download and one "Whatever Peter thinks is ineteresting this month" download. For $60 a year I get 24 plus hi-def albums, most of which I like a lot. But the selection at HDTracks and iTrax is excellent - Thank You!

  • How to convert a new Apple ID into a iCloud email alias?

    Howdy,
Just a few weeks ago, I created a second MobleMe accout for my daugher via my MobleMe family plan. The reason was that her orignal MobleMe email ([email protected]) address seemed a bit childish to her and she wanted a new "more professional" sounding address. At first I tried to create an email alias, but discovered that new alias creation had been stopped due to the looming iCloud launch, so I used one of my unused family plan accounts to create "[email protected]." Took some fooling around to get mail on her macbook to send & receive from both... but it worked and I was once again, the family IT hero!
Okay, now that iCloud has launched, and we are converting over to iCloud I wondered what to do about my daughters two email addresses. I looked around for information about just converting both xxxx & yyyy to iCloud, so my daughter could receive both emails from the same iMac mail account... but I can find nothing about that option on the inter tubes so I figured that option was unsupported.
Next I wondered if email aliases had come back, and they have! Cool, just convert [email protected] to an alias of [email protected]... but alias, you can't delete an Apple ID and I assume that I won't be able to create [email protected] as an alias as it is it's one Apple ID (otherwise, there would be a really big security hole in iCloud email ;).
What to do? Well, I can think of the following options, in order of what would be most user friendly to my daughter:
    1. Convert [email protected] to an alias of [email protected]. This would be nice because I could simplify my daughters email set up (just one account, not two). Trouble is, I don't know how to do this and/or it just can't be done.
    2. Create a new alias for [email protected]; [email protected]. Kind of junky as "yyyy" is pretty obvious (if you knew what it was), and [email protected] is already "out there."
    3. Create two accounts on my daughters macbook; one for [email protected] and the other for [email protected]. This ***** because she'd have to logout/login to check mail on both accounts.
So... their must be a simpler way, right Apple? If so, please advise!

  • How to convert Warning message Appl.Area V1 mess.No 428 to Error Message

    Hi,
Can any one please tell me how to make a warning message to error message in Scheduling Agreement, message no is 428 and application area is V1, this message comes when the user exceeds the target Qty in Schedule line.

If a message is a custom message, then by changing the message type from W
(warning) to E(Error) we can convert the message type into error message. This is done with the help of development guy. A change in the code is needed.
If it is a standard message, then it depends on w hether we have teh access to change the message type. If access is there, then it is possible to change the message from Warning to Error. i.e. If we are capturing std SAP message in our code and displaying then we can change it, else if SAP message is displayed directly, we cant change it.
So, to change it, capture the error message from SAP in some Zcode and then convert that message into a custom message of message type E.
The whole change needs ABAP support.
    Reward if it helps.
