How to convert HDV-1080i captured video to burn on IDVD ?

Hi Gang,
I recently bought a Canon XL H1 HDV camcorder and love to shoot HD-1080i on miniDV. I capture the video on IMovie HD using HDV-1080i. It is beautiful.
I need to convert this format using the best compression so I can burn the video on a IDVD. I realize I will loose some resolution but until Blu-Ray is available, I have no other alternatives. Canon XL H1 shoots uncompressed audio and video and is amazing. I have used H264 in the past with 720p but I'm not sure using 1080i. Can any of you wonderful folks walk me through the best steps to do this? Thankyou, Joe Ray
ps: I own Final Cut Pro 5.1 but can't learn it til late August2006.

well right now since your recording the high def to a tape, you're shooting HDV, which is compressed HD. iMovie imports that and converts it to the apple intermediate format.....(no compression, just a different format imovie works with). Just do the editing in imovie and send it to idvd and choose best quality in the projects pane in the idvd preferences. that's all you can do.
(imovie does the editing, and idvd does the converting to MPEG 2 which is what dvd players read).

  • How to convert HDV to iPhone 4

I have Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 and Compressor (1st version)...what are the BEST settings to convert my HDV 1080i video (1440 x 1080) to a H264 format that iTunes can accept and I can import/sync into my new iPhone 4. I have Compressor from like 5years ago, so I have no presets for any of this..I can CUSTOM all of the video settings so the iPhone or any other device can play it...but I need the settings.
Max Bit Rate? Two Pass Encoding (yes/no), frame rate, resolution? What other settings
Am I best to convert to 960x540 the native resolution of the iPhone 4 or should I convert to 1280 x 720 in case I plug my iPhone into an HDTV? Will either play or look better?
    Thanks.

Ok, I found a number of answers thanks to your points (another board). Huge thank you!! I posted this question in 3 Apple Discussion Boards and no one came close to a solid answer that explains the heart of it like you did...and I checked out what you said and you are right on.
One of the videos in particular that I encoded at 6,000 kbps...well when I cut out 5 seconds of the most complex part (256 videos being played and shrunken down...cool effect!) that segment when I cut it out and save it as it's own Quicktime Movie the bit rate shows 17,000 kbps....I know the iPhone 4 can do at least 10,000 kbps in my trials and you may be correct that it can do 14,000 kbps...I tried a simple video at 15,000 and it failed...so I think you are about correct with the 14,000 number....certainly between 11,000 - 14,000 would be its max at 1280 x 720p and audio at 160 kbps AAC.
Ok, 1 more key point....I reencoded that video at 5,000 kbps which actually should be fine for 720p with my stuff (I was only using 6,000 to get a tiny bit more out of the video...negligible) and that failed also..I looked at the most complex part and found it at 15,000 kbps..again cutting out that 5 second spot...so I am now reencoding at 4,500 kbps for that video and 4,000 and 3,500 just to see when it begins to work.
I believe on MOST (80%) of the videos I've done at this 720p resolution that 6,000 kbps works on the iPhone...but it's probably safer to set it at 5,000 and then I'm guessing you'll get 95% work....and perhaps at 4,000 or 4,500 (I hope) you'll pretty much get 100% of the videos to work on the iPhone 4.
I am still testing so I'll report back tomorrow night for sure. Just so you know the bit rate for small segments of video (that could cause iPhone 4 non compatibility) is more than 2-3 times...it's more like 2-3.5 times it appears. So if you divide the max bit rate by 3.5 perhaps that's the safest setting if you want a sure fire way.
This is real interesting..NO ONE has mentioned this and Apple's support line did NOT even mention or know about this area at all.
After I compress my 6.5 minute video...4 different ways...tomorrow night...we will know for sure...that video with that 5-10 seconds of real complex stuff has to be at the very upper end of compression challenges...if I can get that max rate..every other video should work and we'll have a sure fire max compression rate for this particular format.
By the way I am experimenting with 960 x 540 a little bit just to see how much more latitude that would give one. But I think for future proofing and for hooking the video up to an HDTV that 1280 x 720 is the ideal format IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SAVING MULTIPLE COMPRESSED COPIES OF VIDEO.
    More tomorrow-

  • Converting HDV 1080i 60 into HDV 1080 p 30

    Hello guys,
I have HDV 1080 i 60 video. All I need is to make it progressive, so it would play good on computers.
I did import the file into Compressor and choose - High Definition/HDV 1080i 60.
In Inspector i go to Encoder tab and set COMPRESSION TAB to: HDV 1080p 30, KEY FRAMES to: All.
Now, is this enough or do I still need to go to FRAME CONTROLS and change Output Fields to progressive?
Or what would be the easiest way of doing this?
    Thanks

When you say play on the computer, a HDV file may be kind of glitchy for many computers.
Usually reducing the size of the movie (not full HDV size) and using H.264 or other Codec is one option (though H.264 on larger movies on older computers often is not all great shakes)
For general computer playback I will usually go to 1/2 or 1/4 size and tweak the Frame Controls. Usually start with a preset for QuickTime 7 LAN then in frame controls resize "better" and deinterlace "better" to start with.

  • How to convert HDV into Flash, keeping 16:9 ratio

    Hello folks,
I have HDV videos which I would like to post on iTunes. However, I only have 500MB of web space, so I am looking for any ideal option to compress my HDV, but I would like to maintain that 16:9 ratio. I have heard that Flash is the perfect solution, but I have not find HDV to Flash convertor in Compressor. So does anybody know any way, how to achieve this convertion?
Thank you so much for any input or a tip.
    Cheers

Is H.264 capable of making tiny files with decent quality like Flash?
Despite it is a generic question the answer would be generally YES, that's because it all depends on the bitrate you choose and an H.264 video can look great at lower bit rate compared to flash or Mpeg4.
If you wonder about size...H.264 is the way to go to get great quality and small file size.
An example? Lets assume your target is the web, size limit 100MB.
Just encoded an HDV video file for a client. It is 9 minutes long.
    Settings_
    Video:
    H.264
    2000Kbits
    480x270 frame size
    sound:
    AAC, 44.100khz, 128kbts
    Final result:
    A great looking 80MB video
    You want it smaller?
You do the math with bit rate=The lower the bit rate the smaller the file size.
    Hope that helps,
    G.

I want to convert the Jpeg files into video clip with the help of JMF
    any one can help me?

I'm not sure of his/her reasoning behind this, but I have yet to find a way to record video with mmapi on j2me. So with that restriction, I can see how one could make it so that it just records a lot of jpegs, and then makes it a movie.
I would be interested finding a workaround for this too. Either if someone would explain how to record video with mmapi or how to make recorded images into a video. Thanks!

  • How to convert slide shows from Video CD to DVD format

I have a number of Adobe Photoshop Elements slide shows in the Video CD format.  Since many DVD players (especially blue-ray) do not accomodate the Video CD format........... I would like to convert them to DVD.  This will not improve the resolution but will take care of my problem.  I do have Adobe 9.0 Photoshop and Premier Elements.  Suggestions appreciated.

Even though Photoshop Elements gives you the option of burning a CD or

  • How to Make a Still from Video and Burning a DVD

    Hello All,
I am using FCP HD and I would like to know how do you make a still photo from video footage?
Also I have to burn an editing project to dvd. I don't know how to use studio pro, but the person said that it needs to be a ntsc full resolution version. I am not sure what that means.
The project is about 10 minutes long and this person had me using the H.264. I have been playing around and I think I not doing something write because when I send the project to compressor it tells me that I have like 200+ hours befoe it outputs.
Could someone give me some simple instructions using the H.264 on how to do a good large size (over 320x240) QT movie to dvd?
    THANKS...

To export a still park the playhead on the image you want, mark IN OUT, go to FILE>EXPORT>QUICKTIME CONVERSION. Click on QUICKTIME MOVIE and In the dropdown choose STILL IMAGE.
You will have to De-Interlace it in Photoshop after you export.
    As for making the DVD:
    Shane's Stock Answer #3:
To export your DV project so there is no loss in quality, simply go to the File Menu and select EXPORT>QUICKTIME MOVIE. Not Quicktime Conversion, fot this will compress the footage. Make sure the settings match your timeline settings, make it self contained and you are set.
Import this into iDVD or DVDSP and burn your DVD. Don't go the h.264 route.

  • How to upload and capture videos?

How do I upload videos to edit? How do I use the capture video option?
I'm a beginner so I don't know how to do much but I'll learn on the way. Any other tips / stuff I should know?

See this (a search on the premiere forums for FRAPS):
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?127@@.3bbe4d6a
One poster suggested you can simply set FRAPS to export DV AVI Type 2 - the file/codec format that PPro likes best. But your frame size will be an issue. If you are eventually going to DVD, you want to plan all that from the beginning.
FRAPS can be complicated, as you will see in the posts I linked you to.
Once you have your FRAPS file in an appropriate format, you just import it to PPro. (Go to the help file and look for import; you are not capturing.) You need your PPro project set to the right settings. (Look for project settings in help; if you don't find a way to set this up as DV, you may need Desktop editing mode.)
Check the PPro Wikia out; click on tutorials on the left. These are somewhat of a compromise between trial and error and training first.

  • How to convert beta into imovie

Hey everyone, I'm new to macs and imovie.... Im trying to find out how to convert my old home videos into dvds but the problem is I don't know what adapters to use and how to do it. The home videos are in beta and I don't know how to get them onto my mac... any help would be appreciated. thanks

We'll see how new you are. If this makes sense to you, you're doing okay!
If you have a digital camcorder, the first thing to try is a passthorugh.
Connect your Beta machine to the video inputs on your camcorder. Connect your firewire OUT of your camcorder and IN to your mac.
Fire up iMovie and see if it detects your camera. Try playing your Beta tape and see if it appears in iMovie's monitor on your computer.
Now, some cameras can't do this, but give it a try. Also, search the threads here. You may find a link which will help.
