I'm trying to get a grey scale image to be just plain black and white, no grey tones. Anyone know how I would do this?

Threshold in adjustments. You might try blurring a little, or create two or three adjustment layers with different thresholds and target them to different areas of the image. Eyes, hair, body. Wheel wells, windows, car. Like that.

Can you take an image (photograph of a person for example) and convert it to line art? If so, can you convert the whole picture to a black and white (no shades of gray) line art?

"Line art " can actually mean many things. Do you mean outlining in Black and White? There are some Actions on the Adobe Exchange that will do that or use Find Edges or Graphic Pen or some of the other Filters. There are also plugins you can get like Outliner.
Or you might want to use Adobe Streamline to trace it in vector paths.

I find the most efficient way to just walk over the image and call getRGB(x,y) on every pixel, more so than Pixelgrabber. If someone knows a more efficient way, give me a beep.

Convert photo to line art?

Dear Forum,
I am trialing Elements and Illustrator but cannot find a solution in help or the forums, or any book at Borders, so I hope someone can help. I am looking for a way to convert photos (JPEGS) of flowers to black line art......like a coloring book, not just black and white or grayscale or sylhouette. I will then print out the line art (1-2 pixel black line art) to clear acetate for use as a positive original for creating a silkscreen via photo emulsion exposure (and then silkscreen printing the line art to fabric for hand painting). I am doing this by hand now.....place a sheet of acetate over the photo and outlining "edges" by eye with a fine Sharpie, then using that as the positive original. See attached file for an example. The line art needs to be relatively detailed ( e.g. petals, stamen, leaves) but not absolutely perfect as I only need to print guide lines on fabric for subsequent hand painting. It seems easy to do by "eye", tracing edges of color or tone change, but I have not figured out how to make that happen in Elements or Illustrator. Of course I have only had the trial for a couple days, and have used live trace, posterization, etc, but have not been lucky. Please point me in the right direction. If I can make this happen with an Adobe product, then I will buy it.....I have hundreds of photos to convert. Thanks.....Bob

If you use Threshold, you can add some gaussian blur to the image to make the edges smoother. You can also add a brightness/contrast adjustment layer between the blurred image and the threshold layer to fine tune the edges.
If you have Windows, you might want to look at Medhi's Fine Threshold filter (freeware) found here:

Edit: You could also use Find Edges on the image first; desaturate it; then use a threshold adjustment layer. Go back to the Find Edges layer and add gaussian blur to taste. To further fine tune, slip a brightness/contrast layer between the blurred image and the threshold to control line thickness/detail. (FWIW, I would make a copy of the Find Edges layer and blur the duplicate so if you change your mind you don't have to start the project from scratch.)

Converting photo to line art?

I have Photoshop Elements 5.0 and want to know if there is a way to take a photograph and convert it into a line art image. I have tried a combination of a few different filters and have not been able to get the results I am looking for. Any thoughts?

It is not easy, and works best if image does not have a great deal of texture. Try this:
Open image
Duplicate background layer
Filter>other>High pass. Want small radius
Filter>sketch>Notepaper. Try image balance=25, Grain=0, Relief=0
Filter>adjustments>threshold. Work slider to get black & white image
Use pencil tool to get rid of stray pixels

We have developed an Employee search mobile web application in .net which is hosted on an exposed IP server, we need to show the employee data along with the image of the employee on mobile.
When we run this application through our desktop we are able to see the image of the employee since we are doing this through <b>intranet</b> , but when we try to access the same from any mobile device we are able to see only the data but no image, since we are doing this through <b>internet(exposed server).</b>
Please suggest some way to get this image,

Is it allright for a swing code to access local resources? like in my case i want my swing app to decrypt and encrypt an image file but when i tried to access the method for decrypting and encrypting i got this error message on my console. Do i have to make my code signed before i could write/read a file on my hard drive?

How do I achieve this line art effect?

I'm trying to replicate the design below but I'm not sure if I'm using the correct approach.
First, I used Photoshop to desaturated an image and adjusted the levels. Next I imported into Illustrator and live traced it after tweaking the options.
However, I can't seem to have a nice clean line art like the one above. Do you think that design use another method (maybe manually tracing multiple images using the pen tool)?

that image you show is drawn or mostly drawn. you can use image trace to get some of the shapes you need and recomposition the pieces back together. for example on the image you want to copy, i would take an image of the skyline and trace that. select the silhouette of the skyline and delete everything else. then i would do the silhouette of the bridge. then i would trace with different settings to get a few of the details in the bridge and put them on top. then draw in a few details by hand. things like straight lines.
anyway. short answer is that no, there is no illustrator effect that can give you that. it's a lot of work

Converting pic to line art

I'm about to purchase some scale models I want to photograph, then turn the photos into line art so I can make alterations to them. Is it easier to turn a picture that is mostly white or very colorful into line art using Photoshop?

From a quick test:
Load in your file.
Save As to a new name to protect the original.
Increase the contrast.
In CS-4, go to Filters/Styilize/Trace Contour
OR
Filters/Styilize/Find Edges.
Both will need fine tuning to get as close as possible to what you want.
Desaturate to turn it grey scale.
Adjust Levels to get the cut off as close as possible to where you want it.
Erase out what you don't want.
I was using a low contrast file and did get something that was line artish both ways.

How to convert images for newspaper?

Hi all,
I just got a new assignment that require me to produce newspaper ads for the next few months.
I understand the 25-30% ink gain, I understand the 240% total ink coverage. That's it!
What I don't understand is what settings I should use in conversion, how to make my photo shaper and more colorful with color saturation.
What proofing paper I should use for proofing etc.

Hi Trevor, Yes The Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Washington Post all wants CMYK files. These days, their colors is getting much better than before. I used the ISOnewspaper30v4.icc profile and the image is ok, it's too flat and dull.
Is there any members here who work in the newspaper industry and process images on a regular base that can offer me some advice? Thanks.

How to convert images which is not supported by the ImageIO?

I have made one project.
In that i have used some images and render them on some screen.
Now there are many images which is not supported by the ImageIO class bcz its showing me exception like

How to convert rows to lines in internal table?

Hi Folks,
i have an internal table with some rows and would like to convert that table into another internal table with columns.
Let me give you an example:
it1:
a
b
c
d
it1 should be converted into table it2 and should look like this:
it2:
a   b    c    d
The problem is that the entries in table it1 are not fixed, so that means that the number of lines is different depending on the query...
Has anyone an idea?

Using Reader XI (eleven). Line art in download file has turned black. How do I get line art back?

I am using Reader XI (eleven). I have downloaded my Nikon S9700 camera resource manual (pdf) and now all the line art appears as black images. How do I restore the line art? Document was created in Adobe 5.X. I have downloaded most recent version of camera manual and same condition exists.

Answered my own question: Under Preferences> Accessibility> Document Color Options I had selected "Replace Document Colors". Don't you love it when things work out?
