How to convert pal to ntsc in imovie

Hi,
I recently purchased a video camera that records in pal and i imported the clips into imovie and edited them together and am just wondering what the process would be from here to convert this file to one accepted by north american companies (i.e ntsc) .
Thanks

You might want to ask this in the iMovie forum. https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/imovie

Yes, although the vast majority of newer European DVD players and TVs have no problems with NTSC DVDs, the only way to be sure (well, almost sure) is to burn a PAL DVD. You can't legislate for the fact, however, that not all DVD players can play all DVD-R authored disks, but that's a seperate problem!
I generally use After Effects for quick and dirty (but good quality) standards conversion. Whatever you do don't just try exporting your project via Quicktime using a PAL as this will only change the colour space and not the frame rate or frame size. If you use QT to change frame rate it will simply repeat every fifth frame to get to 30fps which will give you jerky motion.
Here's a step by step guide to doing the conversion in Compressor 2, using "optical flow" to interpolate to get the extra frames :

  • Converting PAL to NTSC in FCP

How do I convert PAL to NTSC in FCP?

    Hi
May be my Amateuristic way can be of help ?
PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL
    A. Copying commercial DVDs - No Not possibly at all - Not even legal to discuss.
    B. Home made DVDs (DVDs without copy protection)
    C. Movies from iMovie or FinalCut
    • Save as full quality QuickTime .mov and convert this with JES_Deinterlacer  (free on internet)
    NTSC ---> PAL.
    • Most often not necessary - Most stand alone PAL DVD-players playback NTSC
(if TV is old in BL/W)
    PAL ---> NTSC.
    • If played on Mac - not necessary AT ALL
    • If on NTSC DVD-player - CONVERSION IS NEEDED - nearly no Stand alone NTSC-DVD-players
    playback PAL at all.
To do this You need to convert the PAL DVD to streaming.DV or full quality QuickTime .mov
    • I use Roxio Toast™ to do this (There are no free converter)
    • JES_Deinterlacer  (free on internet) to convert to NTSC
    • Set up an NTSC project (29.97fps or 30) in iDVD and import then burn
    I burn to
    • Verbatim DVD-R
    • Set down burn speed in iDVD to x1 or x4 recommended by many
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk before burning (IMPORTANT)
PAL is 25 fps and an analog TV standard of 625 lines
NTSC is 29.97 fps and 520 lines
NTSC (29.97fps) 520 lines - about 640x480 pixels (square) 720x480 rectangular (narrow) pixels
PAL  (25 fps)   625   lines - about 768x576 pixels (square) 720x576 rectangular (narrow) pixels
to use a photo 702x480 resp 576 then add 9 pixels on each side to add together as 720
If iDVD hangs on PAL or NTSC.

Deleting iDVD pref. file - should return You into NTSC mode.
Yes iDVD can switch to PAL - BUT as You see with a rather lousy result.
    a. Need to convert to PAL - most often not - Most PAL-player can playback NTSC
and on a fairly new TV in color. (old TV in Bl/W)
(Other way around - from PAL to NTSC most often a must - few NTSC-player can use PAL)
    b. IF MUST - then use JES_Deinterlacer to do this conversion - so much better and free.
My list on this (or rather PAL --> NTSC - just think the other way around)
I have to send it overseas
That too can be a problem. As USA = NTSC = 29.97fps and EU = PAL = 25fps.
DO Not let iMovie or iDVD do this conversion from one to the other - Result will be Very
    BAD
I save the movie as a full quality QuickTime .mov file then I use JES_Deinterlacer to do the conversion - then I cont. in iMovie or iDVD with project set accordingly.
JES_Deinterlacer is free on Internet and there are Pro applications but not that much better and costs are astronomical.
    PAL-DVDs - don't play in US
NTSC-DVDs - usually plays well in EU
All plays well on a Mac - What ever.

Thank you SDMacuser. I dumped all the plist icons with no result, and was getting pretty plist off when it occurred to me to delete all the previous dvd.proj files. Bingo. That did the trick. So thank you for all your help and the additional information you provided.

  • How to convert Pal HDV to NTSC

    Hello,
I am finishing up a 100 minute project which was shot on HDV 50i (pal). Has anyone have a suggestion to what is the best way (somewhat inexpensive) to convert it to NTSC? I've heard of Nattress Standards Conversion filters, but I don't believe it works with HDV. Or is it possible to do it within the FCP studio - somehow convert it to NTSC DVD Pro -- How? Always appreciate the Discussions. Thanks,
    Romanz

Yes, you can do that. I do need to be able to email you though so you can get updates and help and stuff though. Let me try again.
And I can email the filters to your mac too, again, if we can get the email working. I'm guessing your email service is blocking my email or something, or it's getting caught in a spam trap. I've just sent another from my .mac account to see if that works.

  • Converting PAL to NTSC and making a DVD

I have a couple of .avi files, some are in PAL and others in NTSC, I wanna make a DVD in NTSC mode, How can I convert the files?

    Hi
This is not easy and You need other programs to do this.
    .avi.
You can use MPEG-Streamclip to convert the AVI files so that QuickTime can play them
    and to streamingDV for iMovie.
This may work - I had great problems to get .avi into anything usably.
*PAL to NTSC or other way*
    A. Commersial DVDs - No Not at all - Not even legal to discuss.
    B. Home made DVDs (without copy protection)

  • Burning converted PAL to NTSC movie file on to DVD

    Hi.
I'm having a few problems based around standards conversion from PAL to NTSC. I have some old home movies (PAL footage from my time in Europe) which I have been editing in iMovie. I have (I think) successfully converted the finished project into an NTSC format. However, when I burn to DVD in iDVD I am getting nasty red and green vertical lines ruining the picture when played in my home DVD player. This disfiguration seems to be triggered or coincides with any peak in the audio.
Is this a PAL -> NTSC standards conversion problem? A problem with the file I am burning to my DVD through iDVD, or a problem with my home set up? Needless to say the movie plays fine on my Mac and my home set-up plays other commercial DVD's perfectly.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks and Happy New Year.
    Tom

    Hi tommycrops
Welcome to apple discussions. I suggest narrowing the issue down as much as possible ... one idea is to make a disc image to the desktop of the finished iDvd. Test playback with apple's dvd player. Assuming it plays as expected then burn to Verbatim Dvd-R at 4x.
Also make sure all energy saver controls (in system pref's) are set to Never while working within iDvd. Disconnect all external third party devices prior to burning the dvd.
If none of the above works for you then go back to your original iMovie project file, check all movie properties and try to open it within QT Pro/player prior to burning. You'll need to verify playback prior to burning.

  • How to convert PAL dvd to NTSC?

Hello I am trying to convert a PAL dvd to NTSC format and was unable to when I tried mac the ripper. Perhaps it wasn't the program for it.
I'm looking for a free program that would allow me to do this.
    Thanks.

I do not have final cut pro. Is there another option I can use?
No I'm not trying to rip dvd's. I bought this dvd in europe but unfortunately cannot play in on my dvd player (although I have an all format playing dvd player).
Also, do you get an error when logging into the apple forums.
This is the message I get every time:

  • Converting PAL to NTSC for a dvd

I have a quicktime PAL movie that I want to burn to a dvd to send to the US as NTSC.
    It's just a short movie using 720 x 576 size and 25 fps.
When I set up iDVD it warns me just before burning that I am trying to burn an NTSC dvd using a PAL format media and I don't know if this will result in a poor quality or an unplayable movie.
Can anyone please advice how to change the PAL movie to NTSC in Compressor so that I can make a good quality version of the PAL file into an NTSC file?
Thanks a lot for any advice.

    Hi
Just going from iMovie (PAL) to iDVD (NTSC) does work BUT VERY BAD RESULT
    I do.
    • In iMovie Export out as QuickTime full Quality QT.mov file
    • Use JES_Deinterlacer - Google it - It's FREE
    • Here I open the QT.mov and let it convert to NTSC - VERY GOOD - and save with a new name
    • Open iDVD and make a NTSC project
    • Now import the converted movie
    • Burn
To make sure that it plays well in US I also do.
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk - Others not interesting
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    • I set in iDVD pref/Advance/burn speed down to x1
This has worked for me and been confirmed from sunny Calif.

  • Copying Home video DVD, converting PAL to NTSC

I have a home video DVD in PAL format that I would like to convert to NTSC. I have tried to look up the settings in Disk Utility but that was no help.

  • Can FCP convert PAL to NTSC on capture ?

I have a miniDV tape that was shot in PAL and I'm trying to find out if I can use FCP 4.5 to convert the tape into NTSC to use in a movie I'm making. I'd rather no take the tape to an A/V store and have them convert it for me. I'm not sure if FCP can do this but any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this tape has the key video that I need to use for my movie. Thanks.

    Hi Rob.
As well as the Natress thing (great person, good service) you might like to try 'JAS Deinterlacing'. I think that's how it is spelt. I use it all the time. It is free. And gives quite acceptable results. Run a Google on it.
The way it works is that you import your stuff in FCP in PAL and than export the clip or sequence as a QT reference movie (you know, don't click the 'self contained' box), import into Jas and away you go.
    Hope that helps.

  • URGENT!! Converting PAL to NTSC

    Hi all
I need a reply on this badly!!
I just [so I thought] converted a PAL Anamorphic FCP Movie to NTSC Anamorphic QT using the Standards Conversion NTSC Anamorphic Preset in Compressor. RESULT: The Aspect Ratio has changed BUT when imported into an NTSC project in FCP Item Properties says its frame rate is 25 fps and not 30 or 29.97 AND when dropped into an NTSC Sequence it requires rendering for the video and audio streams. [Using Compressor 2.01 & FCP 5]
    PLEASE PLEASE HELP, EXTREMELY URGENT!!!
    [email protected]

Just had a quick go taking a 4:3 pal clip (no anamorphic to hand) and outputted to Anamorphic NTSC and I got 30.12 fps! It seems something is up with compressor (search here)
If totally pushed for time try JES Deinterlacer its free, otherwise pop for
    http://www.nattress.com/standardsConversion.htm
EDIT: It appears you must turn on frame controls (searching here) to get the frame rate corrected. You may want to set everything to the fastest since frame controls can take time to process

  • Converting PAL to NTSC using Compressor, FCP or iDVD?

    Hi guys,
I'm currently editing some PAL footage from a Canon DSLR which has been compressed into an Apple Prores which measures 1920 x 1080.
I need to put my finished project on a DVD so it to play in the US.
Should I export to NTSC in FCP, Compressor or simply setup iDVD as an NTSC project and hope that dropping my completed PAL is converted into NTSC?
What are my options to convert my PAL footage into NTSC and at what stage should I do it?
Finally what NTSC video format would be ideal for HD video on DVD?
    Thanks in advance!

You could pay to have a post facility do the conversion, which would give the best quality. OR, do your standards conversion in Compressor or in JES Deinterlacer.
Giving iDVD an NTSC 1080 Pro Res file may work well. Do a test on a short representative section of your movie and see. If it doesn't meet your expectations, go into Compressor and resize to 729x480 anamorphic (PAR of .84); turn on Frame Controls and set Resize Filter to Best. Submit and then bring that into iDVD.
No doubt you appreciate that all DVDs are SD and that the end product, while potentially quite good, is compromised in image quality compared to your high rez original. If you want higher resolution, you have two options: red laser AVCHD disks for videos <20 minutes or Blu Ray, which is a whole different kettle of fish.
    Good luck.

  • How to convert files for use in iMovie?

I have ripped some home movie footage from DVD using mactheripper to my harddrive.
    Coolio.
Now, how on earth to i get the files into iMovie?
I'm guessing I need to convert the files somehow but how? Using what?
Please tell me the procedure, thanks, R

... am a mac newbie and...
.. then, you shouldn't stroll around in the outer rims of the iNet, looking for MTR.. , this app is mostly intended for distracting copy protection from commercial dvds...
    give that app a try:
DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
legal, handy, very Mac-like in usage... plus a free trial, you can test, how it works for you....
    just to mention that:
DVD uses a plyback-format, end-of-the-road, delivery standard.. not meant for further processing.. you will recognize a (dramatic) loss in pic quality..

  • Converted pal to ntsc movie stops 30 seconds short of end

    Hi all,
I have to make a dvd for viewing in America and am making a NTSC version incase the pal version does not work.
For some reason after I have converted the sequence (to ntsc pal)in FCP and then dropped it into IDVD two things happens.
Firstly the Movie has a flicker of black in between every edit (which I could probably live with) but secondly it stops exactly 28 seconds from the end of the 2 minute 54 second second sequence.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    justin

    Hi
    I do it another way.
In FCE/P I work with same standard as recorded (eg PAL)
Save as Full Quality QuickTime .mov
    • NOT Selfcontained
    • NO QuickTime Conversion
Then I convert this movie in JES_Deinterlacer (Can also use MPEG Streamclip or
the program in FCP bundle to do conversions (Compressor 3,))
Now I start a NTSC DVD project in iDVD and burn my DVDs.
They play well in Calif. USA
