How to convert to avi?

I have a video that was taken on VHS and I want to convert it
to .avi.
Is there a way to do this with any of the utilities out
there? I have
Googled, but can't seem to get a clear answer.
I have burned the video to DVD so I have that to work from.

I have had mixed results with converting DVDs to AVI.
Sometimes works
great, other times nada. Much depends on the make and model
of DVD burner
used, disk type, copyright encryption and other stuff I won't
bore you with.
But this product works real well most of the time.

Failing that, you could output the VHS tape to a camcorder by
plugging
camera into your old VHS player and copying the analog signal
onto digital
tape, mini dv or whathaveyou. Then plug the video cam into
your computer
and using a movie editing ware like Pinnacle's Studio DV or
Sony Movie Maker
(there are many out there), capture the video, edit and
output to avi or one
of many other formats.

Flash CS3 comes with "Adobe Flash CS3 Video Encoder",
standalone application.
You could as well use Flash to convert to FLV, simply import
that file to flash
and it will open the FLV conversion dialog automatically.

How to convert an AVI frame to an image data cluster ?

Hi everybody,
I have previous VIs that manipulate pictures (image data cluster) readen from JPEG files. I'd like to use these VIs to analyse individual frames from an AVI file.
How can I connect the image out of the IMAQ AVI read.vi to the picture input of the Draw Flattened Pixmap.vi?

How do convert DivX AVI to play in iTunes and especially on iPod?

I have a DivX AVI video file I would very much like to have on my iPod but have no clue what program might exist that would convert it to an iPod compatible format? I have Toast 7 if that helps..

Does any one know how to convert the media format in JMF?
Is there any APIs or Demo about how to convert mp3,avi to the uncompressed wav format?
In windows platform, we can use DirectShow APIs. It's a component of the DirectX SDK. DirectX can help us to decompress the video or audio from compressed format to uncompressed format
(RGB for video, PCM for audio) and it supports streaming also.
Is there any familar APIs in JMF or Opensource for Mac?

Hi,
You can set the codec chain in the Processor (during configured Stage) object which allow you to define your desired Codec, Multiplexer, etc.
For more information, you can look at the JMF API Guide. Since I know that JMF doesn't come with mp3 codec, I think you have to download a codec pack called "ffmpeg" etc which add more Codec to JMF.
About the Mac, I am sorry that I really don't know.

I have just bought an imac and am trying to put my movies on to the mac from a microsoft machine. A lot of them are in AVI or MKV formats and I want to know if there is a converter I can download on my imac which will convert these files? Any help would be gratefully received.

If you just want to move these avi and mkv files to play on iMac, you can download VLC player, it plays just every file format.

How do I convert an .avi file when the codec is CLLC

I've been sent a file .avi to convert for a digital display. We do this often and have had no problem, however the codec is CLLC? I've never heard of it and FCP won't read it, nor will VLC or QT.
They compressed using Edius.
I've tried all sorts of programs, the preview comes up with a blank screen and tells me its an audio file.
Does anyone know how to convert the CLLC file.

How do I batch convert separate avi files to separate mp4 files

For batch conversions, I use DigitalMedia Converter by Deskshare. My version is an older one (2.7), and there is a newer version, in two flavors, "regular" and "pro." I do not recall what limit on number of files is, but have had about 10 in the conversion queue. The newer version, and especially the Pro version, has probably expanded the number of files in the queue, but I could not quickly find what that max number is. While not opensource freeware, my copy was only about US$40. I was so impressed, that I bought two licenses - one for each of my editing computers. I have been meaning to upgrade to the new Pro version, but as old 2.7 works for what I need to do, just have not gotten around to it.
Now, Premiere Pro can do batch conversions too, through the AME (Adobe Media Encoder), but that would be a much, much more expensive solution.
I am certain that there are other conversion programs (some might also be free), that can do batch conversions, and with the H.264 CODEC for your MP4 output.
One caveat: if your AVI files are SD (Standard Def), you will NOT be pleased if you convert to MP4 in HD (High Def), as there will be up-rezzing, and the results will not be pretty. If you need to up-rez to HD, when using SD material, you might want to look into something like Red Giant's Magic Bullet Instant HD. Many users have been impressed by its up-rezzing capabilities, though some have not.
Also, I think that Corel's video editor has an up-rezzing capability, but have never used it, so cannot comment directly - might be great, or not so great.

I just caught a short 30 second clip of my son crawling for the first time with my Canon camera. I want to send the video to my Mom via email however the file is too big. Her computer does not play mp4, which is the only conversion option I found, and walking her through installing a compatible player is useless. So I would like to find out how to convert the mov file to avi or wmv, small enough to email. I just purchased Premiere Elements 10 and never used it. I could not figure out how to do it, so if anybody knows, that would be great.

Sure.
You just need to program a Processor to turn off any video tracks, transcode to a WAV-acceptable audio encoding, and then use a DataSink to store the output of the processor as a WAV file.

How to convert .MOD files into .DV for iMovie import

I am urgently (and desperately) trying to import some .MOD files into iMovie 09 for editing. They were made on a JVC cam, but I only have them on HDD now. I tried renaming files to .avi, but still cannot import them. I used Handbrake to convert to mp4 files and can import them now, but quality seems to be reduced even though destination file size is similar.
Can anyone tell me how to convert the .MOD files to .DV files easily? I have read about the ffmpeg tool that you can use in the Terminal, but am not confident to do this as have never used Terminal !
Any help and advice would be very much appreciated.

I have a JVC everio 30 GB hard drive video camera and I'm trying to convert the videos as well. Mine are also in mod format and my computer won't convert it either. Should I upgrade to quicktime pro 7 for $30 or just pay $20 for the mpeg-2 add-on? This is for a family camera that is used mainly for occasional family vacations/get together's. No editing, I just want to get these off the camera's hard drive because the hard drive is running out of space and I wanna be able to make them into DVDs so we have a hard copy in case anything happens to my laptop. I'm not sure which is better for my use? The add-on is cheaper but is there other advantages for me to get pro?

Convert DV AVI to DV MOV and retain timecode

How can I convert a DV AVI created on Windows to something that Final Cut understands? I can import the AVI directly into FCP, but I lose the timecode and I need to render it. I can convert the AVI to MOV, but I lose the timecode information in the file. Any recommendations on what software can do what I need? I have tried MPEG Streamclip and QT Pro. I can record to raw .dv files if needed. It also needs to be a lossless conversion - just basically looking to change the wrapper so that FCP understands the file.

I guess the biggest issue is that if my TC does not match what is on tape then I can't imagine trying to get the footage re-captured from tape if the file gets corrupted or deleted. I already know the answer to that - "be sure to always back up your data". Yes, but for us the video tape is the backup. File gets deleted? No problem. Right click, batch capture, insert tape, wait the capture time, done. If I don't have matching TC then I would need to backup all of our footage daily, which is out of the question due to the amount of footage we have and the cost associated with that.
I know how to assign new TC to a clip, but without a painstaking process of manually looking for a good sync point on the clip and the tape to find what TC I need to manually put in I don't know a better/faster way.
Capturing in FCP of course is not a problem. TC remains what it should be, all is well there.
I have not looked into Live Capture Plus, but I really need something for PCs due to cost of Mac hardware.
