How to convince a designer the font is too light

I'm not a designer. I dabble, but I have no formal training.
My background is User Experience and User Interface.
A designer has created templates to be used for PDFs. The font is not only light, but the designer has chosen to use a color value that is significantly towards the center of the black/white gradient.
As a result, when I try to read the PDFs that are produced, I have difficulty. I've asked around to other users in my company and they have also complained about the light, gray font.
Unfortunately, the designer is backed up by the brand manager, who claims that the font and color value represents our brand.
If our brand is all about being difficult to use, I would agree, but I need to make the argument that having a document users can read is more important than reflecting a brand.
I'm hoping someone can point me in the direction of some articles or discussions of this issue.

Plenty of folks have discussed this:

Web usability guru Jakob Nielsen writes:
Use colors with high contrast between the text and the background. Optimal legibility requires black text on white background (so-called positive text). White text on a black background (negative text) is almost as good. Although the contrast ratio is the same as for positive text, the inverted color scheme throws people off a little and slows their reading slightly. Legibility suffers much more for color schemes that make the text any lighter than pure black, especially if the background is made any darker than pure white (Nielsen 2000, p 125).

    select all (Edit > Select All), then open the font panel by selecting the menu item "Format > Font Show Fonts".  Now select the font you want.
    I could only find Templates from Avery for Pages.  I think my suggestion in still good but want you to know you posted this question in the forum for Numbers.

    The only way to increase the fonts on your desktop would be system wide by going down a notch on the resolution. Some people won't do it because it increases the pixel size so the fonts won't be quite as sharp; I decided I'd rather have that than having to squint continuously. Go to System Preferences > Displays > Scaled > this will give you all resolution options available. No harm in trying - just check the default (top) choice again if you don't like any of the others.
    It's a b*&^ch getting old .  I still use the screen zoom instead of decreasing resolution, but maybe soon ...

    If the iTunes purchases are not in your iTunes library you can redownload them by:
    Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    If you restore from backup, not that synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup and thus if those items are not in the iTunes library they can't be restored to the iPod during the latter part of the restore process.

    Is there a way to increase the size of the font in the tool windows in InDesign? I am having trouble seeing the info (the font is too small)

    Not possible. You'll need to go to your operating system and choose a screen resolution that displays the screen with larger pixels.
    Or get a new prescription for your glasses (seriously!)

    The entered font size in mm is not true. The font is too small. Am I doing something wrong?

    Thomas,
    If you need to have the font appearance at a specific size while maintaining fuilly editable Live Type, you may:
    1) Tick Edit>Preferences>General>Use Preview Bounds;
    2) Select the Type and Effect>Path>Outline Object;
    3) Then set the desired size in the Transform palette.
    That will reduce the Bounding Box to the actual bounds of the letters, and keep the Type editable.
    Remember to untick Edit>Preferences>General>Use Preview Bounds before you get a reverse issue.

  • I have a 22 inch monitor set at 150% but since I installed Firefox, the font is too small and the screen is too small. Cannot make font or screen larger. I can do Control++ each time I enter a page but don't want that to be my solution.

    In control panel/display, I had my display set at 150% and at 1680 X 1050 resolution. This filled my 22 inch screen with the page content. Now that I have installed Firefox, the font is too small and the content is centered in the screen leaving about3" per side of blank space. I want to fill the screen and make everything larger. Haven't found a way to do that. Firefox tells me in my control panel/display window that by setting my display at 150%, "some items may not fit in your screen if you choose this setting while your display is set to this resolution. It worked fine with Explorer.

    The Firefox Page Zoom feature does a domain by domain level of saving the users preferred zoom level settings, there is no default Page Zoom level setting in Firefox.
    Try the Default FullZoom Level extension: <br />

    Hi
    I have a problem with color prints from photoshop elements 12. The pictures are too light and with strange colors. I have a Canon pixma mg615I0 printer and use mac os X yosemite. The pictures are taken with a coanon eos 550d in the color space sRGB. I have followed adobes recommendations and have tried both letting the printer respektive photoshop manage the colors. But nothing works. I see that there are different opinions about which is best to do so I tried both. I have the latest printer driver installed. Can anyone help me with this?

    Do the following:
    Print a test page from the printer. Perhaps the print head needs cleaning via its maintenance facility.
    Let the printer manage colors, not PSE
    Calibrate the monitor

  • How do you install to the Font Book?

    Im mostly a PC user and have been informally designated as the "tech guy" at work that is all Mac based and we are having serious font problems
    We are a newspaper and we need to be able to have the same fonts on every computer. its only a general handful of the more used ones like Times, Garamond, Helvetica, etc... We have a ton of fonts that were pretty much collected over the years. From what i can tell, they all seem to be installed in the Font Book and what i want to do is put them all on the other computers.
    I do the option to export the fonts then install them to the other computers but it seems like it only installs the ones it wants to, or will not install all the parts of a single font like installing the Italic but not the Bold.
    Basically its a total mess and im exhausted trying to figure out what im doing wrong to something that seems so simple. Does anyone else ever experience this? Are there maybe any better font management programs out there that are hopefully free? We have tried Extensis Suitcase and FontAgent Pro and both just make it more confusing. Just need some major help

  • How do I globally change the font across all pages in a multi-page PDF document

    I have a 500 page document. I suceeded in changing only the font on the first page using Acrobat Pro and selecting "Edit Text and Images", selecting "All" on the first page and changing the font.  It worked perfectly.  Now I want to apply that font change to the remaining 499 pages. Any ideas?

    Sorry Bill, not how it works. You can select text across a page boundary using the normal multi-select tool for copying, but you cannot edit across a page boundary. If you try to activate the ETI tool from the Content Editing panel or use the context menu "Edit Text" item, Acrobat will trim the selection to the current page only.
    The previous two responses are correct - you must either repeat the edit by hand on every page, or go back to the original document and make the changes there (which is the expected workflow for such a drastic alteration).

  • How can i edit / customize the font in the navigation bar in iweb?r

    how can I edit / customize font size and color in the navigation bar on an iweb created page?

    This tutorial may help: #24 - How to Change the Basic, Rollover and Visited Color of an iWeb Navbar.  It only applies to the various colors.
    Wyodor has posted code to be put in an HTML snippet that will increase the font size.
    <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
    <!--
    navDiv = parent.document.getElementById("widget0-navbar-list");
    navDiv.setAttribute("style", "font-size: 1.1em;");
    // -->
    </script>
    Increase the size by increments of .1 until you get the size you want.  You'll need to publish the site before you'll see the change.
    If you only have a couple of pages in your site you can create your own text based navbar.  That will give you complete  control over font, size, color, spacing, etc. However, be sure to use only  Web Safe Fonts or the navbar will not look like you want it on those computers that do not have the font you used installed. This demo page is an example: Text Based Navbar.  With more than a couplke of pages updating such a navbar can become a real pain.  However, it is much more search engine friendly.

  • Apple Mail (Mavericks), Viewing size of list is too small.how do you increase the size of the email message list.  The font is too small, I can hardly read them.

    In Apple Mail, using Mavericks, how do you increase the size of the email message list that displays on the left side of the screen?
    The font size is so small.
    Thanks.

    Thank you for responding.  After investigating and checking further, it was clear that only one of your suggestions changes the font size of the list of emails, also called the In-box.  And that is the display resolution.
    However, changing the display resolution affects the dots per inch of everything, everywhere and makes it larger.
    Given the high end fee Apple charges for their products, and the generally well developed software they provide, it is hard to imagine they have not corrected this obvious slight of effort on the inbox text. At times Apple's "one-size-fits-all" and "it's our way or no way" mentality astounds me and makes me want to run back to Microsoft.
    Evidently this is a well known mistake, which has yet to receive any attention.
    Again, thank you for your effort and assistance on my behalf.

  • How do I globally set the font of a java program

    I would like to define a default font for all the labels, button, and text on a JFrame. I used the following lines:
    static Font defaultFont = new Font("dialog", Font.PLAIN, 12);
    contentPane = frame.getContentPane();
    contentPane.setFont(defaultFont);
    contentPane.add(xxxxx);
    contentPane.add(yyyyy);
    You would expect all the components added in the contentPane would use the font I specified, but they are not. I need to go into each pane, and set each label/buttons font in order for it wok. Can someone tell me why this is not working? and maybe a better way?

    You can change the properties for the entire application by using the UIManger class:
    UIManager.put("Button.font", defaultFont );
    UIManager.put("Label.font", defaultFont );
    This should be done before the JFrame is initially shown.
    For a list of the all the properties that can be set, check out this program I wrote. All the properties for a given component are shown on a separate tab in a tabbed pane.
