How to copy address book archive to a dvd

Recently synced iphone to imac and lost all contacts (aargh!!!!). Itunes was set for automatic backup, so the backup contact file was also blank. Found a two year old copy of my contacts. I have now manually inputted them all. I created an addressbook archive file. However, I can not find out how to  (1) copy or burn this archive to a dvd so I can restore from it if needed again and (2) how to print a copy of the entire addressbook>
Please help!!
P.S.
I read through a lot of previous posts and saw where this iphone syncing and deleting contact lists is not a new problem. It also is not a function of my being a neo-luddite. Many others have had this happen. Is there some type of fix in the works to deter this from continuing to happen?
Thanks,
Ralph

Also found how to copy Address Book, as well as all others files on my computer.
The answer is to open Address Book.
Under FILE menu>Export>Address Book Archive
at prompt, Save to which ever location you wish on your computer ( I chose Documents). This will create an archive of your contact list with that date. Archive after anytime you change or add an address card. If saved to the same location on the same computer, prompt will ask if you want to Replace current>OK. If you archived on different days, you will create a new file with different date. You can throw away previously dated file or save as a backup.
To copy this file and all other files on my computer, I had to download the latest copy of Backup (v3.2) from the Apple downloads page under Apple support. This provides an installer to create a back up iDisk. I installed Backup>( it creates an Umbrella icon on my desktop)>followed the instructions to create a backup>program has standard backup protocols or you can customize.
I chose to backup my Home folders to a CD/DVD. System will tell you the size of the file and how many CD's or DVD's you will need. Select Burn.
Voila!!!!
I now have a DVD that contains all of the files in my Home folder (including the Address Book archive). This DVD will allow me to restore files to my computer, if I accidentally erase it again. Note that this method will not allow you to backup the entire startup, only files. You must use an external drive or Time Machine to create a rebootable copy of the operating system.
Hope this helps others.

  • How to copy address book contacts to Numbers 3

I updated to OSX 10.9 and Numbers 3.   I can't drag or copy address book contacts to spreadsheets anymore.    Apparently this feature has been removed.   Any work arounds out there?   Any ideas how to do this?   I am utterly dependant on adding Address book contacts to Numbers spreadsheets.

    Pete,
We feel your pain. Nothing keeps you from continuing to use version 2.3. Just carry on as though nothing ever happened. It's not as though you'll be missing much by not running the latest version.

Yes what?   You never posted which email client you are using.

  • How to copy Address Book info to paste into a document or eM?

This seems like something everyone would want to do all the time - but I don't know how to do it in ADDRESS BOOK. I go to an Address Book card which I've filled-out with all the key information. OK but now I want to take all that info and copy it to the clipboard (or clipboards thanks to CopyPaste) - and then paste that contact information somewhere.
I don't find how to do that simple act! I can copy line-by-line the name, address, eM etc. etc. etc. - but unless I have pasted all that info previously into the NOTE section, then it is aggravatingly impossible to just do a copy paste -- unless I'm missing something - I must be!
ALSO: Printing a card is also 17th century - each time I must click on all the items I want to print - why can't the default mode be to print EVERYTHING?!
Any comments - perhaps I'm really missing something here - but I don't think so...

...create an automator service to copy the contact info to clipboard.
You start with a Service that receives no input in Any application. Add a Get Selected Address Book People action. Add a Get Contact Information action and set it how you'd like, returning Formatted Text. If you want to be able to choose the items that you copy each time, click the Options button and select "Show this action when the workflow runs." Now add a Copy to Clipboard action. Save the Service and go to Keyboard Shortcuts of the Keyboard System Preferences. Enable the new service and give it a command key shortcut. Now, with a contact selected, hit the shortcut you made and it will copy the info to the clipboard.
    Hi Barney,
This workaround is fantastic. Thanks. It took me 15 minutes (plus 15 mins getting distracted and trying to get my head around the automator application).
Now I can copy and paste contacts from Addressbook to emails quickly and easily. In the most part it solves my issue which was exactly as described by Stephen.
It's not quite perfect though. If you select the option to bring the field labels to the clipboard, the resulting paste is messy (tabs, spaces and carriage returns) and takes quite a bit of tidying. Any way around this?
Also, I cant see a way to get some missing fields (EG work Fax). Not that this is all that important because most of the important fields are there (who uses fax's these days?).
I cant understand why Apple don't have this feature in Address book, especially when it is so easy to create a workflow for it , but only when told how to with step by step instructions such as yours. The Automator application seems powerful and user friendly, but requires some training. Do Apple have any tutorials on it?
    Thanks again.

  • How Do I Make Import Address Book Archive Work Properly?

I have several address books archived. I have one for Christmas cards, I have another for my neighborhood watch program and others that I use at various times. Some of the archives were made using Tiger and some I have created in Leopard. When I Export an Address Book Archive it does so without a problem. When I Import one of my Address Book Archives, to replace whatever address book is currently located in Address Book, the import does not work. Once I try to import, I must quit Address Book then reopen it and I still have the Address Book resident that I was trying to replace. The only way I have found to replace the resident address book is to first archive the current book for the sake of having it backed up, then delete all the names in the book by selecting all then deleting by hitting the delete key or by selecting Delete Cards using the Menu. After the names are deleted, then Importing an archive works fine.
Is anyone else having this problem or possibly have a solution to making Address Book work properly without having to delete all the current names before Importing an archive?
Information: I have deleted the Address Book Folder located within the Home/Library/Application Support folders and rebuilt it under Leopard OS and then pasted the names that were resident before deleting the folders. So far, I still cannot get the Import Address Book Archive function to work properly. Thanks in advance for any helpful information or hints.

Ok! Hmm... I indeed have tried to import an archive, did get the message, replaced all and had it working fine for me so it should for you I would think.
Have you tried to log in your computer as a different user, launch AB and try to toggle back and forth between archives to see if you experience the same issue? If not, then it is a user specific issue, if yes, then it may be more a case of app/system issue.
If you are able to overwrite in AB under a different user, then I would suggest you log in back to your main user and repair permissions (applications/utilities/disk utility repair permissions.
As for your use of AB and different archives, I am sure no one is bothered by that. We are all users here trying to learn and/or help others. I would only point out that if you cannot find a solution to your problem, you may want to consider working with AB in a different manner than you have in the past and by your description of usage groups and smart groups will more than handle your contacts while avoiding mixing apples and doughnuts - but I am sure you have thought of that already !!
    hope this helps

  • Address Book Archive Preferences?!?

After a nasty crash of Address Book and other issues, I ultimately upgraded to 10.5 and am now up to 10.5.5 with all things going smoothly. The crash occurred when using PocktMac for BlackBerry Sync (I had not done my addresses in a while - the calendar sync was fine - and then everything was wonky after the failed sync). I did ultimately delete some Address Book prefs (and yes I do wish I could remember which ones I trashed). BUT - what was weird - and STILL is weird - even after the crash but before the switch from 10.4.11 to 10.5.5 is that virtually ALL of my Preferences are labeled in the "kind" column as being Address Book Archive. Its that way for everything from the Excel.plist to the com.apple.printer preferences. surely this can't be right. Of the 401 items listed in the Presf folder, easily 250 of them are branded as "Address Book Archive" in the Kind column. Should I be alarmed? And if I should be, how does one remedy this?
Any and all suggestions and thoughts are always welcome

Is this normal for so many of these to be grouped as address Book Archive?
Definitely not! I'd say there's a problem with your Launch Services database. You should download a copy of Onyx for Leopard (the first item on the left of the page) and run the Maintenance and Cleaning routines, which will repair the Launch Services database, among other things. Those Address Book Archive plist files should change to something else with any luck.

  • Can't copy address book to other machines

I have recently updated my address book on my main production machine. I exported as an archive. On the other two machines in the office, I restored from backup and selected my new address book archive. However, when I scroll through the address book on the two other machines, none of my new names are in the book. How do I copy my address book to the other machines so we all have the same address book.

If the export method isn't working, you can do it by hand
Go to ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder). Then just copy it over to the other Macs, if they are all running the same system.
~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)

  • How to migrate Address book and Stickies without using Migration Assistant

Can anyone direct me on how I can copy over my address book and all of my stickies from one OSx HDD to a new HDD?
I noticed when I went into the Migration Assistant, that some of the options were greyed out such as "Other Data" in my profile and seemed to be pretty huge. So I don't want to use the Migration Assistant because I did a clean install on this machine and I am worried about migrating garbage from my old installation.
    Thanks.

    Hi
With Address Book you can simply open the application, go to File/Export/Address Book Archive, and save. To import on the target Mac/Installation go to File/Import/Address Book Archive.
If the system has become a non bootable system but you can mount the drive then simply go to the relevant users home folder ~/Library/Application Support/ and copy the Address Book folder to the same location on the target Mac/Installation.
For Stickies data simple go to the relevant users home folder ~/Library/ and copy the file entitled StickiesDatabase to the same location on the target Mac/Installation.

  • TS2481 Bad instructions for troubleshooting syncing contacts from my experience: going the vCard route as instructed did not preserve all group contacts. However, exporting and in turn importing an Address Book archive (.abbu) worked in place of the vCard

Apple should update the TS2481 instructions.

After I sent this initial post I did some more testing.
Creating a new Smart Group in my now working 10.5.5 address book which has a NOT conditional caused Address Book to lock-up again.
My Smart Group was pretty simple -- 'list all cards that are NOT a member of any group'.
So, the steps in the posting above do NOT fix the problem, they only identify a particular type of Smart Group which will cause a problem and how to get a version of Address Book working again.
I have not gone back and undertaken a thorough set of tests. I am just not going to create any new Smart Groups without first creating an Address Book Archive -- or alternatively overriding Library/Application Support/AddressBook from a Time Machine backup if there is a problem.

  • How to Transfer Address Book to Another Mac?

I want to move my existing Address Book to another family member's new Mac. We've been using a shared Mail account and my wife just wants the addresses and auto-completes on her new Macbook Pro. My idea is to copy the Address Book from our iMac and put it into the same location on her Macbook Pro. It's in User/Library/Applications Support. Will this do the trick?
    Thanks,
    Steve M.

P.S. Would exporting and importing the Address Book archive also transfer the mail auto-complete data?
Yes, it does, if you are talking about the Previous Recipients.
An address book archive is just a copy of your user/Library/Application Support/AddressBook folder packaged up differently. That folder contains the previous recipients database.
If you don't have any contacts in your new address book, then transferring it via the archive should work.
You can also just copy contents of the AddressBook folder mentioned above.

  • How to sync Address Book, iCal, Bookmarks

How to sync Address Book, iCal, Bookmarks between my iMac and Macbook?

    {quote:title=Julian Wright wrote:}Do you expect everything to be free?{quote}
Geez, ya big meanie, give the guy a break. Not everyone wants to spend $50 on a syncing solution! He just asked a question, and you heap attitude on him about his finances. Not your business!
5480, syncing that information between two Macs is both easy and tricky at the same time. It’s easy because you really can just copy the files back and forth. But it can get tricky if, for instance, you were to change information on both sides. Then you’ve got two different versions! The general solution to this is to be pretty careful about only changing data on one side at a time. If you add some contacts on one side, don’t go working in Address Book on the other side until you’ve copied the new info over.
“Exporting” the data, burning to CD, and then importing it on the other Mac would be a total pain in the ***, though. Much too time consuming. What you need to do, if you don’t want to pay for a solution (I didn’t for ages), is just learn to hook your computers together on a network, and copy over the relevant files directly (no exporting, no CD burning). Address Book, iCal and bookmarks data is all stored in folders in your Library folder. You just copy it over! Be sure to quit the applications before moving the data.
Where exactly are these files, you say? How do you network? Figuring out the details is your homework assignment, but the method works. Good luck!

  • How to recover address book and all mailbox data

How to recover address book and all mailbox data, from mounted drive that had OS10.4.11 now has bad blocks, and is not boot-able.
Any help would be appreciated.... hermann

The drive is mounted (appears as a drive on the desktop)? You can't just copy the files, or is it not really mounted?
It would help to have more details on the status of this drive since I am obviously confused as to whether or not it is mounted and appears on the desktop. Is this an internal or external drive? If internal, how are you booting your computer now?
There are data recovery tools such as [Data Rescue II|http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php] or [FileSalvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1]. Both have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy. You will also need a second hard drive equal to or larger in size than your first drive as a destination drive for recovered files. If the critical files are located on the bad blocks then there isn't much hope other than to send the drive out to a professional data recovery service which could cost $1000.
The easiest way to recover the files is to get them off a backup drive.

When application quits - it's all forgotten and it self-resets to
    unwanted configuration.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the third-party developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, email the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software.

  • Address Book Archive not working

I am trying to move my Address Book from my G4 to my MacBook Pro (both running 10.5.8). The archive creates, I move it over on a USB stick, and then use import/address book archive. It gives me a popup saying that reverting to the archive will wipe out my existing addresses, I respond OK and then nothing happens. The Address Book shows that I still have the original 21 cards, only one shows up. Nothing else happens.
When I close Address Book and then reopen it, it shows the same initial 21 cards.
I've tried this several times, with new archive files.
    Thanks,
    Eric

The archive works, the unarchive doesn't.
To get around this, right-click on the archive and choose "Show Package Contents." Replace everything in your username/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ folder with the contents of the archive package.
