How to copy an adjustment layer mask in CS6

I want to use the same adjustment mask twice on the same image. For example I want to use the adjustment mask for curves and possibly saturation. How can I duplicate the mask but keep all effects.

You could put the Adjustment Layers into a Layer Group and use the mask for the Group. That way you'd only have to edit one mask to affect all your Adjustment Layers.

  • PSE 6 for Mac, how to install the new layer mask tool

    I just bought the new PSE 6 for Mac, whew what a change in the color of workspace.
    My classmates and I are wondering how to install the free layer mask tool that Sue Chastain has on her About site.
    Or perhaps first, has anyone used it and do you like it?
    Do you put it here?

    Havent been to this great forum for a while, been busy, I miss you all, and shall try to visit more often.
    I remember when I was a beginner at this, I learned so much here and you all were amazing help!
    Thanks,

    Hi Barbara,
    Its this one,
    http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/pselements/p/layermasks.htm
    So I assumed afterwards that it wasn't for Mac. So I went ahead and installed the older action for my PSE 4.
    I was hoping it was platform agnostic, but when I looked at this, the difference between the 2 versions,

    Not knowing where the Previews folder was, threw me overboard.
    And I didn't read all the way down Sue's page, as my old brain got ahead of my eyes.
    So I really dont know what to do next with this, some of my classmates are wondering the same thing.

  • Copy and paste layer mask into another layer mask

    I know there is a way to do this.
    How can I copy and paste on layer mask into another.
    I need to use the same mask for multiple layers and images.
    Thanks

    In the same document, click on the layer mask, option drag to a new layer
    To copy mask to a different document with both documents open, select the layer, Duplicate Layer to the other document (destination). Then in the other document, option drag the mask to whatever layer you want, delete the layer you duplicated (you don't need it anymore, you just needed the mask)
    Or to copy mask to a different document with both documents open, load mask as a selection. Save selection to the other document (destination). Then in the other document load the new alpha channel and apply as a layer mask. Delete the alpha, you don't need it anymore.
    Edit: J always beats me to it

  • How do I get my layer mask to work properly

    I have Photoshop CS6 64bit I duplicated the layer and applied a Gaussian blur.  I created a layer mask and when I  brush over the layer it does not reveal  the mask  - how do I correct this?Layer Mask

    It is hard to tell with out seeing what you have. But black is reveal and white is hide, with grays being the variance of the two. It would not reveal the mask, it would reveal the lower layers. I assume that what you meant, but I added it for new users reading this thread.

  • Copy/Capture Adjustment Layer settings using Javascript

    Hi,
    For last couple of days I'm trying to copy adjustment layer settings via Javascript after adjustment layer has been already created.
    General idea is to capture adjustment layer settings and save them to JSON file for future preset etc. I was hoping to capture raw data ( getData(stringIDToTypeID('legacyContentData'))) and store it in JSON file base64 encoded.
    I'm able to capture raw data but I'm not able to restore it to the adjustment layer using putData or something similar.
    Capture raw data of adjustment layer:
    var doc = app.activeDocument;
    var layer = doc.activeLayer;
    ref.putEnumerated(charIDToTypeID("Lyr "), charIDToTypeID("Ordn"), charIDToTypeID("Trgt"));
    var desc = executeActionGet(ref).getList(stringIDToTypeID('adjustment')).getObjectValue(0);
    rawData = desc.getData(stringIDToTypeID('legacyContentData'));
    Trying to restore raw data:
       var desc = new ActionDescriptor();
            var ref = new ActionReference();
            ref.putEnumerated(cTID('AdjL'), cTID('Ordn'), cTID('Trgt'));
            desc.putReference(cTID('null'), ref);
            aldesc = new ActionDescriptor();
            aldesc.putEnumerated(sTID("presetKind"), sTID("presetKindType"), sTID("presetKindCustom"));
            var list1 = new ActionList();
    // Not sure what to do here ...
            aldesc.putList(cTID('Adjs'), list1);
            desc.putObject(cTID('T   '), id, aldesc);
            executeAction(cTID('setd'), desc, mode);
    If I'm using above code with code generated by i.e. script listener or action translated into javascript it works (at least for curves), but I'd rather use getData/putData so I can capture already created adjustment layers with out need to code each layer separately. toStream and fromStream also would work, but I wasn't able to restore data using these methods too.
    Help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the replies you guys. It's not hardware related Mylenium. My machine was purpose built for AE work and this is a very simple comp that is nothing remotely as intensive as some of the truly complex and effects ladened projects I've done before. It's even simpler than the one in the same project where the other adjustment layer is working properly. The layer is going white before an effect is even being added, so it's not that. I'll double check the OpenGL when I can get back on my machine in a bit, but I never changed anything before changing comps, so I don't think that's it.
    I'm guessing that it is probably related to the layer settings itself. There's no 3D layers so it's not that Dave. I'm going to check Rick's idea when I can because the white solid behavior sounds exactly what he is talking about.

  • How to zoom in a Layer Mask

    Hello,
    I'm editing a video with Photoshop CS6 and basically I made a heart shaped Mask and inside it a still frame zooms in as the video progresses. But I need the Mask to expand as well, to zoom in as the still zooms in.
    Using Layer Mask Position I can only move the mask around, but not transform it. Please help!

    Hi there
    Are you trying to have the frame AND the mask resize together? If you can, please post a screenshot of your layers panel. Also, what version of Photoshop are you using?
    To resize the mask and the image together, make sure that the layer and the mask are locked, as shown below.
    By locking the layer and the mask, you will be able to resize the two simultaneously. Go to Edit > Transform > Scale, or hit control/command T on your keyboard.
    If you unlock the layer and the mask, you will be able to move and resize the mask independently of your image. So this might be helpful if you're trying to make the mask zoom out, while the image inside remains the same.
    If this is not what you're trying to do, please don't hesitate to reply! And again, a screenshot of your layers panel, or an example of what you're trying to accomplish would help

  • How to know if a layer mask is full white ?

    Hi,
    I need a script to know if a layer mask is full white, meaning it can be deleted without any visual effect.
    I can get layer mask selection, but it allways report full image size
    getLayerMaskSelection()
    doc.Selection.Bounds
    gives (0.0, 0.0, 4000.0, 2400.0) even with doc.Selection.Invert()
    Any idea ?
    Basically, I try to delete all empty layer masks.

    Here is another way
    function selectLayerMask(visible){

            desc.putReference( charIDToTypeID( "null" ), ref );
            desc.putBoolean( charIDToTypeID( "MkVs" ), visible );
            executeAction( charIDToTypeID( "slct" ), desc, DialogModes.NO );
            rc = true;
        } catch (e) {}
        return rc;
    function isRevealAllMask(){
        var ref = new ActionReference();
        ref.putEnumerated( charIDToTypeID( "Chnl" ), charIDToTypeID( "Ordn" ), charIDToTypeID( "Trgt" ) );
        var desc = executeActionGet(ref).getList(charIDToTypeID( "Hstg" ));
        var histogram =[];
        for(var h=1;h<256;h++){
            histogram.push(desc.getInteger(h));
        return histogram[254] == histogram.toString().match(/[^,0][0-9]*/);
    function selectComponentChannel() {
        try{
            var map = {}
            map[DocumentMode.GRAYSCALE] = charIDToTypeID('Blck');
            map[DocumentMode.RGB] = charIDToTypeID('RGB ');
            map[DocumentMode.CMYK] = charIDToTypeID('CMYK');
            map[DocumentMode.LAB] = charIDToTypeID('Lab ');
            var desc = new ActionDescriptor();
                var ref = new ActionReference();
                ref.putEnumerated( charIDToTypeID('Chnl'), charIDToTypeID('Chnl'), map[app.activeDocument.mode] );
            desc.putReference( charIDToTypeID('null'), ref );
            executeAction( charIDToTypeID('slct'), desc, DialogModes.NO );
        }catch(e){}
    var hasMask = selectLayerMask(true);
    if(hasMask){
        var revealAll = isRevealAllMask();
        selectComponentChannel();
        if(revealAll) alert('mask is all white');
    Also if you have one of the newer versions of Photoshop that support mask density you might also want to check that. If the density is set to 0 this will not show the alert for non-all white mask even though the appear white in the GUI

  • Can't paint at full opacity in layer mask in CS6 64 bit windows 7

    A problem has developed in my photoshop CS 6 64 bit on windows 7. I can't paint at full opacity in a layer mask. It is like an 75 % opacity brush. I have gone back to the default brushes soit is not the particular bursh. My brush settings are all at 100%, mask density is 100% , the blend mode is normal,-can't think of where else to look for the solution.The brush works just fine when I am not in a layer mask.
    I updated the graphic card driver and also the wacom intuos driver. It has to be somewhere in photoshop CS6 as when I go into my older version photoshop, cs5, the mask opacity works works at 100 % opacity
    Any ideas of what to do next.

    I am having a similar problem that I need help with.  I just loaded CS6 for the first time ever last week and have been tinkering around with photo editing.  I am trying to use an action I downloaded to whiten the whites of the eyes and teeth.  When I run the action I cannot paint with the soft white brush.  I hit backslash and it shows no work completed, just a red background.  I have everything selected at 100% opacity (brush and action layer).
    A couple days ago I was able to use the brush tool to darken the background by loading an action and paiting on.  Now I can't do that anymore.
    I can use my brush for other tasks.  I am so confused.  I would greatly appreciate any insight.

  • Action help to copy color in layer mask to another layer mask

    Hi all,
    Having trouble with this problem...
    I have layer 1 with a color mask set to black, red, blue etc.
    I have layer 2 with a color mask which i want to match and also become black, red, blue
    There are hundreds of files, and the color in layer 1 is always different.
    Manually i would simply click on the layer 2 mask which opens the color picker, and select the area of layer 1 i want to match.
    But doing that in an action does not work.
    I can't get the action to recognize that i want to copy the color content of a mask, and not the specific color used in the example during which the macro is recorded. The color picker does not seem capable of selecting a dynamic input (e.g. whatever color is on layer 1), it simply copies whatever was in layer 1 during recording like a dumb instrument.
    thanks for any input.

    Not sure what you mean by color mask, but I just noticed cs6 seems to have a new feature in the actions tab dropdown menu (small top right button) called 'allow tool recording'.
    I just tried to make an eyedropper action with that option turned on and now the color does change when I change the image colors and run the action again.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I change the layer mask thumbnail to be a thumbnail of the image itself ?

    Hello,
    I am in Photoshop CS5 in Windows, and I have been using Photoshop for sometime now. I am not sure what I did, but for the last few days, in my Layers Pallette, the thumbnails that show up look different.
    I have attached a small screenshot from my photoshop below. Here in Layer 1, the thumbnail in the left (brush ) used to be that of the image open , and the thumbnail in the right used to be the grayscale indication of pixels that have been selected. Any idea how to revert it back ?

    Hi slaveofphoton,
    Go to the Layers Panel Options and choose a thumbnail size other than none.

  • Banding in the Layer Mask?

    Hello,
    I have:
    Windows Xp Service Pack 3
    4GB RAM
    Geforce 560ti
    PS CS5 extended
    I am a photographer and submit the images to an agency.They inspect images at 100% for technical quality.
    While preparing an image today, I used a layer mask in the levels adjustment.I used brush with 0% hardness and just clicked once with black color selected.But I found some severe banding.I alter clicked on the layer mask and found the same banding at 100%.I have not noticed such a thing till date.
    https://dl.dropbox.com/u/42878955/1.jpg
    I did try copy pasting the layer mask to show it to you guys, but when I saved it as jpeg and viewed the jpeg file, there was no banding.However I can see the banding even if view the jpeg of the image above.I tried on another images too but the same problem.It used to be very smooth before.Have made no changes to the default settings.Tried with both OpenGL on and off.
    Why does this happen?

    When I set 16 bit in Camera Raw from the beginning and then opened in PS in 16 bit, and then did the same processing, I see the banding till I zoom in to 50% but not onwards 66.67%.
    So at Actual Pixels the problem is not visible in 16bit?
    Just FYI, layer combination for the Photoshop preview display is done for zoomed out levels in 8 bits, to optimize for speed, regardless of whether you're working in 16 bits/channel, unless you have the Cache Levels preference set to 1.
    Further info: at least with my GPU, layer combinations in 32 bits-per-channel mode remain unbanded (unquantized) at all zoom levels with multiple cache levels. I dare say there will be a performance hit in some cases but it looks really good.
    I would like to see an option in Preferences > Performance so the user can decide whether to sacrifice performance or display quality in greater than 8 bpc modes. In many cases, the reduced performance probably would be unnoticeable or negligible, whereas the reduced display quality can be very noticeable.

  • Switch image in a layer but keep the layer mask

    Hi, I`m trying to swich a image on a layer whit a layer mask. I whant to keep the layer mask but change the image. When I paste a copyed image it the laye it creates a hole new layer. How can I change a image but keep the layer mask?
    Tanks Lasse

    You have things backwards: You copy&paste the layer mask and/or duplicate a selection by loading it using Ctrl+click on the thumbnail, then creating a new mask from it. After that you can delete the original layer. Also more recent versions allow drag&drop replacement of this stuff, but you have to be careful which thumbnail you drag...
