How to copy DVD

After searching the forum, I can't get a clear sense of how to copy a dvd I made with iMovie and iDVD on my wife's MacBook. I made a two DVD's on her computer a couple of years ago before we got a Mac desktop. I would like to rip/copy/transfer (?) those dvd's onto the desktop and synch them to my iPod also. Our desktop is OS X 10.5.8.
Won't you please help the lost and deficient?

use 3rd party apps such as HandBrake or _*MPEG Streamclip*_.

  • Please help - how to copy DVD to computer so that it will play on computer

    I apologize if this is the wrong forum, but I am stuck. I have a DVD of my son-in-law's memorial service that I need to copy onto my computer in a playable form. The DVD itself works great on both the TV, and on the computer (playing with iDVD on the latter). However, I simply do not know how to copy the contents of the DVD to my hard drive so that it will play directly from the drive, and so that I can place the video file in my .Mac public folder for relatives to download. When I open (not play) the DVD, I see two folders: AUDIO_TS which is empty, and VIDEO_TS, which contains files. I have copied these to my hard drive, and I have also made a disk image of the DVD on my drive. However, neither of these gives me a file on which I can click and get it to play. (If I insert the DVD itself into the computer, iDVD launches and the movie plays). Please help. Thank you!

  • How to Copy DVDs

    I hope that this is an elementary question, so please someone enlighten me on my ignorance.
    I would like to :
    1) copy DVD's that I created in IMovie/DVD (my own videos, no copyright, so I should be able to do it!)
    2) re-edit portions of DVDs that I previously created IMovie/IDVD
    Can I do this with IMovie/DVD? Or do I need to buy/download another program such as Toast to accomplish this?
    I thought that I was saving so much room by copying all my videotapes to DVD and then I realized that I couldn't copy them! I am a synchronized swim coach, and often need to make multiple copies of previous routine performances for my swimmers, and it just doesn't seem to be obvious to me.

    Hi Dale and welcome to the forums!
    1. You can clone/copy your own home-made DVDs in Disk Utility, but Toast is much easier to use for this.
    2. This requires a bit more work as you are 'retro-engineering' a delivery format not intended for editing!
    You need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
    which is free, as well as the the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
    Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal. (I have to add that!)
    If you know you will need multiple (but identical) copies of a DVD, then it is better to save the project as a Disk Image and burn copies from that. This saves all the rendering time from the first copy.
    If you need multiple, but all slightly different, copies, then you will have to find room somewhere for the original iMovie project, which you can re-edit before sending to iDVD.

  • How to copy dvd to external harddisk?

    Hello
    I have like 25 dvds with private videos that I would like to make a backup on on my external harddisk, Lacie (1,23 TB free space)
    How is the most easiest way to do it?
    I can not see the dvd in finder when playing it? If so it would been easy to just make a copy paste!
    In finder I can see the external harddisk plus samsung dvd recorder?
    Do anyone know?
    Txs alot in advance
    Tommy

    Repair permissions, restart your computer then insert your dvd when you reach the desktop.  If that does not work, zap the pram and try again when you reach your desktop.

  • How To Copy DVDs to iPod using free software for Windows

    To take existing DVDs that you have around the house and put them onto iPod:
    You'll need two programs, DVD Decrypter and Videora iPod Converter.
    Now, use this step by step tutorial for converting DVDs with DVD Decrypter. Note: Once you reach the part about PSP Video 9, stop watching and use the 'One Click Transcode' option in Videora to select and convert the VOB file that DVD Decrypter produces.
    Once you have a converted file, add it to iTunes in the same way as music (drag it into the iTunes library) and it will automatically copy across to your iPod.

    Is that an error message coming up when you try to use the program? If not, I wouldn't worry about it.
    If you cannot get DVDs to rip then that could be a problem. But to be honest, I have no idea what an ASPI layer is and my copy of DVD Decrypter works fine. I suspect this is probably an integral Windows component and you already have it.

  • How To Copy DVDs 2010 MBP?

    Hi guys!
    I need to make copies of some basketball games I have on DVD , and I was wondering how to do it. I did a few a while ago, but I forgot the steps. I think it went something like insert the source disk, then go Disk Utility > Create Disk Image > and then I'm lost...
    Any help will be gratefully appreciated!
    Have a great day (or night)!

    Duplicate a CD or DVD
    1. Insert the DVD/CD;
    2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
    3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
    4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;
    5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
    6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.

  • How to copy DVD so it will play on a Windows PC?

    I have a home made DVD that plays fine on both a Windows XP PC and my Mac OS X 10.4.11 system. I have used Disk Utilites to duplicate the disk, following the directions in the Help System for copying a DVD. All seems to work fine on my Mac, the copy plays just fine. When I put it into the Windows XP PC, the system does not recognize the disk as valid and asks me to insert a DVD.
    Any thoughts on what I might be missing?

    Try this method of duplication:
    <font "size=+1">Duplicate a CD or DVD

  • How to copy address book archive to a dvd

    Recently synced iphone to imac and lost all contacts (aargh!!!!). Itunes was set for automatic backup, so the backup contact file was also blank. Found a two year old copy of my contacts. I have now manually inputted them all. I created an addressbook archive file. However, I can not find out how to  (1) copy or burn this archive to a dvd so I can restore from it if needed again and (2) how to print a copy of the entire addressbook>
    Please help!!
    P.S.
    I read through a lot of previous posts and saw where this iphone syncing and deleting contact lists is not a new problem. It also is not a function of my being a neo-luddite. Many others have had this happen. Is there some type of fix in the works to deter this from continuing to happen?
    Thanks,
    Ralph

    Also found how to copy Address Book, as well as all others files on my computer.
    The answer is to open Address Book.
    Under FILE menu>Export>Address Book Archive
    at prompt, Save to which ever location you wish on your computer ( I chose Documents). This will create an archive of your contact list with that date. Archive after anytime you change or add an address card. If saved to the same location on the same computer, prompt will ask if you want to Replace current>OK. If you archived on different days, you will create a new file with different date. You can throw away previously dated file or save as a backup.
    To copy this file and all other files on my computer, I had to download the latest copy of Backup (v3.2) from the Apple downloads page under Apple support. This provides an installer to create a back up iDisk. I installed Backup>( it creates an Umbrella icon on my desktop)>followed the instructions to create a backup>program has standard backup protocols or you can customize.
    I chose to backup my Home folders to a CD/DVD. System will tell you the size of the file and how many CD's or DVD's you will need. Select Burn.
    Voila!!!!
    I now have a DVD that contains all of the files in my Home folder (including the Address Book archive). This DVD will allow me to restore files to my computer, if I accidentally erase it again. Note that this method will not allow you to backup the entire startup, only files. You must use an external drive or Time Machine to create a rebootable copy of the operating system.
    Hope this helps others.

  • How to copy to DVD disk

    I have searched through the forums, read many other related posts related to this subject, and studied the manuals and tutorials, however I have not been able to figure out how to do the basic DVD burning. I apologize if this seems to be a simple task to many of you.
    I would like to copy You Tube videos to DVD. These are instructional videos, such as how to make sushi, and the like. I'd like to record various episodes on disks and categorize the contents, so I would have them readily available.
    I would also like to copy my bookmark menu to DVD.
    Basically, I just want to know how to burn DVD disks for various purposes.
    I have a iMac, Snow Leopard OS, and have DVD-R.
    Thanks for your help.

  • How do you save a copy dvd to your external hard drive

    I have managed to make a copy dvd to dvd thanks to all your help. Now I need to know how to save a copy dvd to an external hard drive. Your help will be appreciated. Please reply in as simple terms as possible because I am not up on the latest phrases and computer jargon lol

    Mount the DVD on your desktop, then open it and pull VIDEO_TS folder to your desktop.  Put VIDEO_TS folder in a folder and label it so you will know what it is and then move that folder to your external drive.  The VIDEO_TS folder than can be burned into another dvd or played by VLC.
