How to copy from a damaged drive

I have an external that is failing...
Disk Util won't fix (says to reformat the drive...thanks disk util)
I am trying to copy the thousands of files over, but when it reaches a damaged file, it stops copying completely - then I need to select, drag, and drop...over and over and over.
Is there any way to get the mac to think critical - to do what ANY reasonable person might do - and that is to skip the damaged file, and keep copying the selected files?  Is there any way to get the Mac to do that?
Seriously - did the programmers really think the user would want to stop each time the mac encountered a damaged file and want to re-select everything except the damaged files to copy?
It is very, very frustrating.  I love the mac....but holy cow that is incredible stupid to have the copy program behave that way.
Any work around please would be very helpful and time-saving.

Thanks Niel!
Can you give a little more help?
This is what I learned.
ditto src_directory dst_directory
However, I have no idea the syntax for an external drive src_directory, or even the syntax of the local directory.
external drive is called Carisa's WD - and directory is called Carisa's comp backup.  Local directory is on the desktop called carisa's comp backup.

  • How to copy from in linux??

i've just installed linux. trying to install packages

    ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/extra/os/i686/extra.db.tar.gz
    ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/community/os/i6 … .db.tar.gz
so that i can install xkfe offline as no internet connection at the mo. i have the packages on cd. put it into the linux desktop.
now just stumped onto how to copy from the cdrom drive to the destinations. im not sure where exactly to find the cdrom in the first place.
so if someone can help me with the phrase to put in to do the copy so that i can then run pacman and install these and an environment.

Your cd drive might be /dev/sr0 or /dev/sr1 or /dev/cdrom or something, you would make a folder in /mnt or /media with mkdir and mount it there via mount /dev/whatever /mnt/whatever. You just cd /mnt/whatever and then use cp on files to move them over wherever you want. "cd" = change directory.
I don't mean to be rude, but there aren't many people who can (or should try to) pull off using Arch as their first linux distribution. It is intended for people who are already well aware of what they are doing. Perhaps you should start with Ubuntu, Fedora, Suse, Mandriva, or something of the sort. Ubuntu being the most popular choice, for whatever that means..
That said, there are many on the forums who started here first and are doing fine, so "shrug". It's really about attitude, willingness to work for it (looking thoroughly for your answers before asking, especially), and willingness to learn really. Just a word of advice..
On that note, mounting cd's I'm sure is written all over google, and these forums tend to either ignore or bitch at people who haven't already looked for their question thoroughly on such, with good reason.
Also, please see the forum etiquette http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Forum_Etiquette here. It's not okay to bump your posts so quickly. There is an edit button there for a reason.
Also, why did you link to those 3 database files? db.tar.gz files do not contain actual packages, just information about them.. you would need to download a bunch of xfce packages.. db.tar.gz files wont help you. I don't see how they relate to the rest of your post, either..
    Good luck..

how to copy a external hard drive to  other or  copy songs from one to  another

Don't understand exactly what you want to do. Can you restate your question?
You posted in the OS 10.3 forum instead of the MacBook Pro forum. To get answers to your question, next time post in the proper forum. See https://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa  I'll request that Apple relocate your post.
Also you show iOS 6.1.4 on your profile. iOS 6.1.4 only runs on a iPhone, not a MacBook Pro.

  • PSE-10 how do I import and copy from external hard drive into organizer

Can I import and copy from external hard drive into organizer? Under Get Photos, I select import  from folders/files but after browsing to the external hard drive the copy option is disabled/greyed out. I there a method to import and copy?

That would be mounted as an internal drive and hence the corresponding option is not checked during Import.
Once you import the media form this drive, you can select all and go for File >> Copy/Move files option and copy them wherever you want to.
    Hope this helps
    Thanks

  • How to boot from USB flash drive - Portege R500

    Hi,
I have a Portege R500 running Windows XP, brought about 2 years ago, and recently contracted a worm virus that has infected some of the start up files as the minute I log in it logs out again, even in safe mode! Quickest way I can think of sorting it is to reformat it with the XP recovery disc and reinstall windows.
Problem!! The CD/DVD drive on the laptop stopped working a while ago, have tried pretty much everything in the thread on this site but had no luck.
So my plan was to boot from a USB flash drive and do it that way. However in the boot settings I only have the options of HDD / FDD / CD-ROM / LAN, neither of these will work. Does anyone know how to boot from USB flash drives?
Any help would be really appreciated

    Hi
As far as I know it should be possible to boot from USB FDD
Im not sure if you would be able to boot from USB flash drive but its definitely worth a try
Generally you could try to press F12 button when notebook powers up.
Then a boot menu should appear on the display and you should see all bootable devices.
PS: As far as I know the USB booting was available in ToshibaHWSetup (Toshiba tool which changes the BIOS settings in windows OS.) Therefore I assume booting from USB should be possible.

  • Error copying from one external drive to another

Hi - I am trying to transfer three large iMovie files from an external Firewire hard drive to an external USB 2.0 hard drive. I have the USB drive connected to my 1GHz TiBook through a PCMCIA card. I have the Firewire drive connected at the TiBook's Firewire port. When I try to copy the files, I get about 1/4th of the way through and then I get the following error message:
"Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured. (Error code -1309)."
The three files are about 25GB each, and the problem happens with all of them. I tried copying them altogether and each one individually. I also tried connecting the Firewire drive to the Firewire port on the PCMCIA card. Same problem no matter what I try. I also tried copying my iTunes music folder, which is about 25GB as well, in case file size was an issue. That copied with no problem.
This is driving me nuts. Why won't these particular files copy? What is "error code -1309"? How can I resolve this issue? Any ideas?

I have not yet been able to figure out what the problem is. I have checked the iMovie and other forums, both here and elsewhere on the Web, and I have not come across a single post that relates to this problem. The files I have been trying to copy are still on the external drive, and I have used the drive to store and transfer other files to and from my TiBook with no problems. But those three iMovie files, which will open and play from the external drive, STILL won't copy back onto my hard drive.
The one thought I had involved disk space: Maybe a significant amount (30GB or more) of free space needs to be on the target drive when copying such large files. When I get to a point where I can delete some of the larger files I have been tinkering with, I'll try again.
In the meantime, any insight from anybody into this issue will still be appreciated.

  • P55GD80 slowdown when copying from DVD SATA drive.

I had an issue with my system becoming unresponsive after copying files from a DVD drive to my secondary data drive. I have the specs below:
    P55GD80 (Bios 1.5)
    Core i7-860
Intel X-25M 80GB SSD (Boot Drive)
    Seagate 7200.10 320GB (Data Drive)
    DVD-ROM
    DVD-RW
    4 GB Gskill memory
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.
My initial setup had all of the drives on the Intel SATA 1-6 connections. I first noticed an issue when copying files from either of the DVD drives to my secondary data drive. My whole system would slow to a crawl. After many different combinations, I found the best performance by moving my secondary data drive to the SATA 7/8 Jmicron controller. It does not make sense why I needed to do this. Any ideas? I did not notice an issue when copying from the SSD to the data drive, but then again, I rarely do that.
Do I need to enable AHCI for the Intel controller? If so, how do I do that. When I went into the BIOS there only seemed to be an option for this for the Jmicron controller. When I enabled this, the system suddenly did not see any other drive besides the one connected to the Sata 7/8.
Also, why when I hook up the two DVD drives to SATA 7/8 (JMicron) will the BIOS see both drives, but Windows 7 sees only 1? Does JMicron only operate in RAID?

Thanks guys, I figured it out. I had two problems really. When I went to turn on AHCI the first time, I already had my secondary data drive connected to the SATA 7/8 port, which messed everything up and made me think I wasn't turning AHCI on for the right controller. Turns out I was, but I had to move all of my drives back to the Intel SATA 1 through 6 ports. Once I did that, everything was detected properly, but then my second problem was needing that registry key change which I had no idea was necessary. I would like to think I am pretty technical, but I am obviously a noob to system building since I had never heard of AHCI.

  • -36 I/O Error copying from one external drive to another? Ugh...help?!?

    Hardware:
Apple Powermac Dual 2.5 GHz G5
    512 MB RAM
External Drive 1: LaCie 250 GB (Firewire 800) (contains 150 GB data) (formatted MacOS Extended)
External Drive 2: LaCie 400 GB (Firewire 800) (contains NO DATA) (formatted MacOS Extended Journaled)
    Software:
    Mac OS 10.4.3 (Tiger)
I've sucessfully run the firmware updater (http://www.lacie.com/support/drivers) "LaCie Update Tool v1.3.3" for both LaCie drives to the latest version - 107.
    Background:
Before I updated to the latest firmware and before I changed Drive 2 to journaled, I had problems copying files from both drives to the other. I get this error: "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "filename here.ext" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)."
I did some research (http://www.appleerrorcodes.com/) to discover that Error -36 is an I/O error.
My goal is to reformat Drive 1 (250GB) to journaled. After some reading, I have decided to do that for both of my external drives.
    Question:
I'm at the point now where I need to copy the data from Drive 1 to Drive 2 and this error is still occuring. I need to 1) understand why it's happening and 2) find a solution so I can copy this data from Drive 1 to Drive 2.
    Future Question:
Once the data is copied, I will then reformat to journaled. I'm then going to decide between scheduled backups or setting up a RAID, but I'll post this issue as a separate question. I first need to understand and fix this copy I/O stuff.
    THANKS!
    Dual 2.5 GHz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Using the Disk Utility with the Mac OS, I just realized that I can't verify or repair disk permissions on either of these external LaCie drives. I can on my startup internal disk, but not the external ones. Any idea why?
I replaced the FW800 cables, but I still cannot copy from one external to the other. The connections are like this:
Drive 1 (250 GB) is connected to the back of my G5 via FW800.
Drive 2 (400GB) is connected to Drive 1 via FW800 cable.
I'm in need of some help!

  • How to migrate from internal hard drive to SSD (Solid State Drive)?

I just bought 128GB SSD. I want to replace my internal hard drive with SSD on MacBook Pro. My internal drive has only Mac OS installed (no dual boot with Windows/Linux). Going forward I want to boot my Mac OS from SSD and use internal drive for backup purposes only. I read many forums regarding this here, but each one talks about different methods of doing it.
    * Carbon Copy Cloner for the Mac side (free)
    * Casper 6.0 for the Windows side (not free)
    * SuperDuper
Can some one provide me with simple steps to migrate Mac OS along with my personal data from internal hard drive to SSD?

Because Windows is not involved, you don't need Casper or anything else Windows-related.
Use Disk Utility to repair permissions and repair the directory on your internal hard drive. Buy an external SATA hard drive enclosure* and mount your SSD in it. Connect it to the MBP and use Disk Utility to create a single GUID partition on it, formatting the partition Mac OS Extended. Use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, it doesn't matter which, to make a bootable clone of the internal hard drive on the SSD in the external enclosure. Restart the computer holding down the Option key, and select the SSD to start up from; the purpose here is to verify that the SSD really is bootable. If that works OK, shut down, disconnect the external enclosure, and exchange the drives.
*I recommend a FireWire 800 enclosure, but they are much more expensive than USB-only enclosures, which will work OK — USB is just slow.

  • How to Copy from Billing document F2 to Credit or Debit memo?

    Hello,
I know the Menu path for copy control of billing document to billing document which  is as follows
SPROIMG-Sales and Distribution-BillingBilling Documents-Maintain Copy Control of Billing document--Copy COntrol: Billing Document to Billing Document where I give the Source and the target.
Now I have a scenarion where F2 invoice has ForTrade/Customs information in the Header of F2 invoice which can be viewd through VF03->Header->ForTrade/Customs tab.
Now that inforamtion has to be transferred to CR/DR which is now not being copied although I have set the copy controls between the billing document.
So, can anyone help me by providing the information for the following questions?
1.How will I acheive the copy of Foreign trade to CR/DR from F2?
    2. When I copy from F2 to CR/DR, which all information from F2 will be copied to CR/DR?
    Thanks for the help.
    Anupama Rao

    Anupama,
The foreign trade data is copied from delivery to billing and any order doesn't contains the foreign trade data and when you create a credit memo request CR by copying F2 invoice the foreign trade data is not copied to CR and when you create a G2 invoice from CR the foreign trade data is not copied because it doesn't exists
the optimal solution for this is to keep the incompletion for foreign trade in the G2 and L2 inovices

I am trying to move files from one external drive to another.  I can write to both drive from my Mac.  When I do a large transfer using Finder, I only get a few files and an error code 50.
I'm using two Seagate drives, one formatted for Mac only and where I'm writing to, and one formatted for PC and Mac.  I have written and read successfully to both drives.

I moved some movies and some seldom listened music (coped the files) into a folder on the Lacie drive. Then I reimported them to the main itunes library while holding down "option". This created a link to those files to the external. the files show up in my itunes but cannot be played unless i have the Lacie connected to them.
