How to covert MPEG movie for use in iMovie?

I have some old videos that are a MPEG movie file type.  I cannot seem to import them into iMovie.  Any help would be appreciated.

If you need to convert video files between formats, Handbrake is a free app available online that can do just that. It's a little tedious getting started but after a few runs it is pretty simple to get what you need.

  • How to convert MPEG videos for use on iMovie?

I filmed my drama assignment with my friend on her video camera, she gave me all the files on a USB and when I got home to start editing on iMovie, it says:  iMovie cannot open files in the “MPEG movie” format.

I forgot to mention in a strange way there is not a straight standard format used by cameras as I discover In iMove and Final Cut Express. Mpeg is pretty standard but can be different. For example AVCHD or AVCHD Lite, Motion Jpeg on Panasonic. Each Camera uses similar names but the compression format maybe different and not compatible with iMovie. This why I like Toast, it converts almost anything to a useable format. But if your starting out the Camera Brand and Model is the key to finding compatibility with iMove. Since I have not used iMove in a while and don't know the new version go to the forum with Camera etc. and ask about compatibility. But Toast with some tries will most likely give you what need. This can be frustrating but you'll get there, it may take a little time. Also open the folder with files to see exactly what you've got. You really need to know exactly what you've got. I hope QuickTime work out for you

  • How do I format photos for using in imovie [16:9] widescreen?

I have tried cropping photos in iphoto and not-cropping them in order to import in my imovie. The imovie is going to be created in 16:9 widescreen, but it keeps pillarboxing my photos regardless of how I crop them. AND I have the preferences unchecked to automatically letterbox or pillarbox.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Bob W.

    Bob,
First, be sure that after you use the constrain button and arrange the 16:9 crop box where you want it, that you click the crop button. The crop won't apply until you do.
If you have an external image editor (set it as your external editor in iPhoto Preferences. Open a photo from within iPhoto, edit in the other app, then Save - not Save As) you can use it to resize your photos. After some experimentation I found the size 873 x 480 was the only size that had no black bars in the iMovie project.
For more info on my size experiment, including input from some iMovie experts, look at this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4334136&#4334136. Also follow the link posted by Matti Haveri in the last post of that thread. It links to his page where he explains the math of photo vs. movie, including the best sizes for 4:3 and 16:9.
Ignore my amendment about 875 x 480. In a related thread http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4345498 Matti Haveri concurred that 873 x 480 is the only size that puts no black bars on the sides or top and bottom of the screen.

  • How do you convert .AVI files for using in iMovie without losing the original clip time and date

Hi everyone! does anyone know how to convert .AVI files for using in iMovie without losing the original clip time and date? Handbrake, MPEG Streamclip and Evon all replace the original timecode with the date of modification. This is very frustrating when you are trying to keep the chronology right. I know that if you upload the files to iMovie from one device the chronology isn't a problem, but I'm adding video files from a couple of iPhones and a couple of camcorders. any help much appeciated.

  • Could someone please recommend the best program to convert AVI and MPEG files for use (and exporting) into IMovie 11?

Hi - I understand I need to convert AVI and MPEG files for use within IMovie 11. I have one particular file that has a watermark stating "Created with Flip4Mac WMV Demo". Can someone please recommend the best program for a novice?  Thanks!

    Hi Susan,
It is no simpler converting vobs to mp4 than mpg (mpeg2).
There is *always* a loss of quality converting video from one lossy-compressed format to another, e.g. mpeg2 to mp4.
So, if you want to not lose any quality, then converting vobs to mpeg2 (mpg) is the thing to do (since there will be no video/audio re-compression), assuming Lr5 will accept them (sorry, but I do not know). example commands:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
If Lr5 won't accept them, then you can convert to mp4 with minimal quality loss using a command like:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
You may need variations of these commands depending on encoding of vob.
Note: -i means -input-file; -sameq means -same-quality, as much as possible.
ffm... is smart enough to avoid re-encoding, if possible, when -sameq is used, and makes reasonable choices for audio/video codecs based on extension of output file.
Of course, you'll need to download/install ffm... program if not already on your machine, and execute commands in a terminal or command window.
Do keep us posted please .
    Cheers,
    Rob

I have an external hard drive that was formatted by a PC and has files and directories copied to it etc. I want to use it on my IMAC for backup. I see it on my my IMAC . I can open files etc.  But I can't seem to write to it nor can I delete current content. I don't care if I lose current content. How do I initialize it for use with the MAC?

You can't write to it because it's formatted as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you want to continue using the drive with both a PC and OS X you will need to download and install NTFS-3G so you can then write to it from your Mac. You can get NTFS-3G at:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g
If you want to use the drive exclusively with your Mac then move the data off it and reformat it in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities) as Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

  • How to import WMV file for use in adobe programs, especially After Effects and/or Premier?

How to import WMV file for use in adobe programs, especially After Effects and/or Premier?

I have the latest adobe creative cloud and i'm using Mac 10.8.2
My client gave me a wmv file that she wants some people blurred out in the background but when I go to import the media, it's greyed out. I'm assuming that After Effects will be the best solution for this, but maybe there is another way.
I can purchase a video converter and convert it to .mov but that costs extra money that I don't want to spend just to do this one project.

  • I have a company Ipad that belonged to a deceased employee. no access to his icloud or appleID. how can I restore it for use with a new apple ID

I have a company Ipad that belonged to a deceased employee. no access to his icloud or appleID. how can I restore it for use with a new apple ID?
The apple ID was his personal account and can no longer gain access. Im sure I can get purchase recipts from the accounting department if needed. I tried to put the Ipad in restore mode and used itunes to "recover" the ipad but it still wont let me in because he registered the device with the "lost iphone" feature or whatever that is.

    Activation Lock in iOS 7  >  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5818
The Apple ID and Password that was Originally used to Activate the iDevice is required
If you do not have that information you will not be able to use the Device.

How do I download Rosetta for use in ppc 10.5.8?

Not so. Rosetta is a PPC emulator for Intel Macs running Intel versions of OS X up through Snow Leopard. Rosetta is not an Intel software emulator. There is no such animal for PPC machines other than Windows emulators and other non-Apple hardware emulators such as Atari.

I purchased pages app but in iCloud it prompts me to purchase page.  It shows it has been downloaded but how do I launch it for use?

Documents in iCloud, whether uploaded automatically from an iOS device or via iCloud.com in a web browser from your Mac, are not available for sharing with others. You will need to use something like Dropbox or other public web-sharing site.

  • I have videos stored on an external hard drive. How do i convert them to use in iMovie?

I have videos stored on an external hard drive. How do i convert them to use in iMovie?

Well you first determine the file types iMovie can import, then you determine the file types of the movies themselves and look for the best format to change copies of them into so they can be imported into iMovie.
Once you have determined the best video format for your needs and that iMove accepts, you'll have to find software to convert one format into another.
I'm lazy, so I use my 17" HD 1080i screen to playback the video in it's native format and use SnapZ Pro X to screen record that into Quicktime format that iMovie certainly accepts.
Not everyone has a 17" 1080i HD screen nor the money to buy SnapZ Pro X though.

  • Converting RM files (Real Video) for use in iMovie

    Hello,
I'm looking for a program that can help me convert RM (real video) files for use with iMovie.
I have heard that ffmpegX is great to use. I went to their website, downloaded everything and got it up and running...but when I try to convert anything, it doesn't work. I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong?
    Any advice? Thanks.

    Yes
I found a program but am experiencing lots of trouble with it. I was hoping that others could give me a better suggestion.
I've actually downloaded and installed ffmpeg but the problem I'm experiencing now is that the videos do not convert. The program starts to work and then three seconds later I get the dialog box that says everything has been converted but the file created is 0KB and of course will not open.
Any ideas about what could be going wrong? I've attempted to convert the files to different formats and try converting different files as well. I still have the problem.

  • Video File Conversions for use in IMOVIE

I have a Sony DCR-DVD100 Camcorder and a Powerbook G4. Video files on the camera cannot be imported into IMOVIE for use and editing. The computer can play the files via a USB connection. The video files include VIDEO_TS.BUP VIDEO_TS.IFO and VIDEO_TS.VOB
Can anybody offer advice or recommendations? Apparently there are downloads which will convert the files for use in IMOVIE but I need some guidance. Thanks.
