How to create 2nd Wifi Network from one cable modem

Hello, I am trying to create a 2nd wireless network from one cable modem.  Currently I am using an Airport Express connected to the cable modem.  I also have an unused Airport Express that I would like to use for the 2nd network.  The Motorola modem has only one network cable port in the back.  I am currently using Time Warner as my service provider.  Can someone tell me if a network switch would suffice or would I need a new router, and how would I set them up?  Thanks.

Unfortunately you will not be able to create two separate Wi-Fi networks with the current models of the AIrPort Express that you have. You would need at least one 2nd generation Express and one 1st generation Express to do so.
The 2nd generation Express would be connected directly, using Ethernet, to the Internet modem, and the 1st generation Express would be connected, via Ethernet to the 2nd gen. In this configuration each Express could be configured to provide a separate Wi-Fi network with each using a different security type.

  • I'm in the process of creating a WiFi network from my IMac to my LG HDTV.  I am incorporating a LG WiFi capable Blu-ray player and will purchase an Apple Express or Apple Extreme router. I need some advise on using this aquipment.

I need help in determining the best way to create a WiFi network from my IMAC to a WiFi capable LG Blu-Ray player that will connect to my LG HDTV.  Since I will only need one network I need to know which is the best Apple Airport router to use (Express or Extreme).  What is the correct way to connect these units?  It seem self explanitory, but I'm checking my thinking.  My HDTV is about 20' from where the airport router will be installed with a wall between them.  Has anyone created this network?  Is this the best way to create a WiFi network?

  • Public and Priviate network from same cable modem - more questions please

A couple of weeks ago I asked about having both a privite network and a public wireless network that would work from one cable modem. The requirement is that the private network not be seen or be "hackable" by users on the public network.
Duane gave us the approach to use and we think we have it right, but because the security of our private net is so important, we want to make sure. We will not do the public network if the security of our private network is in danger.
    Here is how things look:
Cable modem --> Router 1 WAN port
Router 1 regular ports --> Private Network -and- Router 2 WAN port
Router 2 regular port --> AirPort Extreme WAN port
We have our public network set up as WPA Personal and we broadcast the network name. The password for this network will be shared wiith users as they enter our public area where they can use their PCs. The default login/password on both routers and the AirPort Extreme have been changed. Connecting via AirPort to the public network I can see Router 2 but not Router 1 or any of my computers, printers, etc. when I browse the network via the Finder.
    Do I have it right?
Does this setup give users on the public network any way to get to my private network, computers, and files? Are there any tests/experiments that I could run to further validate this setup?
    How secure is it?
Am I asking for problems by offering a public network that shares some of the resources of the private network - modem, MAC address, IP addresses of routers, etc.
From the public net we have attempted to use the IP addresses of the computers on the private network without success.
The best answer I could receive is that there is no way to hack the private from the public. If this is not the answer, how secue am I.
    Tim

When you state "Router 1 regular ports(8) feeding Private Network..." do you mean that there is another private router or are the private clients directly connected to router 1?
If you have a private router, the public devices connected to the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) could address and reach anything on Router 1 including the private router's WAN side.
The firewall in private router should block any of the public access to clients of private router. So any traffic from private router should be safe as long as the public has no physical access to router 1 nor router 2's WAN port.
If the private clients are directly connected to router 1, then the public clients can directly access any of your private clients. The traffic among private clients and from private clients to Internet would be secure (as long as my previous note about physical access is true).

  • Using Time Capsule to create a wifi network from a Powerline Adaptor

OK, before I ask my question, I just have to 'paint the picture'.
I live in a work residential complex, with wifi provided. However this wifi is awfully weak, to the point that I can only sit in one spot to receive it, and then it still drops out. I tried using an airport express to extend the signal, but the wifi router won't allow it.
Through the company that provide the service, I am know using a powerline adaptor ( you know the sort; one ethernet cable from router to adaptor, and another from adaptor in room to laptop) and I get broadband.
I'd like to find some way of getting wifi from that, to my mbp, iphone and appletv all on the same network.
Ok, the crux, I want to buy a Time Capsule, if I do so, by plugging the ethernet cable from powerline into it, will I be able to create a wifi network that 1. Allows devices to connect to it, and 2. Access the Broadband service.
    Hope that's clear ;-)

    Yes and yes.

  • Multiple routers/networks on one cable modem

    Hello everyone:
I've been reading around on the forum trying to find the answer to this question, but have not found any specific answer that satisfies all my requirements.  A more in-depth explanation.
I have 1 IP address via cable modem.  I want to configure two wireless routers each with different SSIDs.  The main network would be an Apple Time Capsule and would be the parent’s network.  I would connect an AppleTV and the second router (Linksys WRT-310N) to the LAN ports and the parents’ phones/tablets and an Airport Express extender wirelessly.  The second router would provide a distinct wireless network, have a DVR, network hard drive, and blu-ray player connected to the LAN ports and the kids’ handheld devices and a wifi printer connected wirelessly.
Ideally, both networks would use WPA2 security and the parents’ computers, a Mac and a Win (the Win running Network Magic Pro) could manually switch between networks as necessary.
Can someone please tell me if this is possible?  I think it is based on my research, but specific details about how to do it would be appreciated.
    EQUIPMENT
    Modem: Motorola SurfBoard SB6121
    Router 1: Apple Time Capsule
         Wireless Extender: Apple Airport Express
    Router 2: Linksys WCG-310N

The new modem is configured to only hand out one public IP Address. Nothing you can do but call them and try to get a higher level tech support.
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.

  • How to create a wifi network between Mac and iPhone

    Hi there,
I have just wired Internet at my house, and i would like to create a network with the wifi of the mac, to connect my iPhone to the Internet.
    Is that possible?
i have tried to do, I've created a network, encrypted it, the iPhone recognize it, but when i try to use safari, the following message appears.
"safari can`t open the page because it can't find the server"
So, is that possible and i am doing something wrong, or it isn't possible?
    thx in advantage

This is a possibility. But please be aware using your Mac to emit a WiFi connection is a temporary solution. And it will get a short range unlike an actual WiFi Router. Also you may find it to be unstable at times. The Airport Card in your Mac was not designed to be a full time Router WiFi emitter. But more of a receiver to get the signal and use it for personal use.
    1. Unlock the network on your Mac make it an open network
    2. Go to your iPhone, Settings-Wireless-Tap on blue circle next to network name, Choose Forget network
    3. Now go back, It will rescan and find an open network, Connect, and see if Safari works
If Safari works, Then you had a Security issue. Try using WEP 128 bit 13 character passkey or WEP 8 Character Passkey.
    Cheers and best of luck

  • I'd like to create my own private WiFi network from a public WiFi network

I am often in locations where there are open WiFi networks and I'd like to use an Express to create a private WiFi network from the available public one.?
If the express can't do it on it's own can I add another router to make it work? I have ethernet connected PC's and NAS devices I want to use. Thanks
    Regards,
    Dan

If you need ethernet connections for your "private" network, an AirPort Extreme (or virtually any other router with ethernet capability for that matter) would work.
So, an AirPort Express to "receive" the public wireless signal and provide an ethernet signal to the second router which could be configured to provide both ethernet and wireless connections. Just be sure to setup the AirPort Extreme to "share a public IP address". You'll get a Double NAT message, but you can click to ignore this.

how do you transfer Apple IDs from one ipad to another iPad?  I got the new ipad and gave my ipad 2 to my wife who had the first version and now I can't get my Apple ID off so she can use her Apple ID.

You don't transfer Apple ID's from one device to another one. You sign out in the settings, )the App Store and iTunes if necessary) and then sign in with the other ID.
Settings>iTunes & App Stores>Apple ID>Sign out. Them sign in with the other ID. You can sign out of the app store and iTunes as well by going to the featured Atab in the App Store and the music tab in iTunes, swipe to the bottom and access the Apple ID in there.
You should have erased the iOad before you gave it to her in Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings. That way she could set up the iPad as new with her own Apple ID.
Be aware of the fact that if you use each others ID's in order to download past purchased content to your own iPads, you will lock yourself out of your own ID as you will have associated your iPad with the other person's Apple ID.
In other words, if you sign into your wife's ID on your iPad so that you can download an app or an album so that you don't have to pay for it again, you will lock yourself out of your Apple ID for 90 days.

In addition to RyanJC's comments, the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can store up to five different http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108081 configuration profiles. You will need to use the AirPort Utility to create & save these profiles.
    To create a new profile:
Open AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click "+" to create a new profile; give it a name, and then, click OK.
Set options, such as network name, passwords, Internet connection method, etc.
When done setting the options, click Update.
    To switch profiles:
Open the AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click on the desired profile, and then, click OK to apply the new profile and restart the AX.
Just remember to switch to the desired configuration profile before removing power from the AX.

  • How can Mac Pro (late 2013) create a WiFi network for Mac Books to connect to internet?

I am moving my Mac-Pro (late 2013) to a garden office.  I have an ethernet cable to connect it to the house network.  I also have a Mac Book Air which will only connect to a network by WiFi.  I can use this Mac-Pro to create a WiFi network and the MacBook can talk to the Mac Pro over this WiFi network.  But the Mac Book does not see the local network let alone the Internet, both of which are seen on the Mac Pro.
Is there a way that I can connect the created WiFi network to one of the two Ethernet cards in the Mac Pro?
    Or what?
    Tim

    I have half cracked it.
For some reason the first step it to turn internet sharing off.
Then internet sharing can be configured and the wireless network set up and given a password.
Then, and then only, turn internet sharing back on and turn WiFi ON.  All this is on the Mac-Pro (late 2013).
Now the Mac Air sees the new network and can log on and connect to the WAN internet locations, at least via Safari.
BUT if I use Finder on the Air, it will connect to the Mac Pro but it will not display what is on its disc. Though I can do screen sharing.  Odd.
Also Air-Drop has stopped working, so there is no means of transferring files between the Pro and the Air.
I am going away now for a few days and will revisit this on my return.
    Thanks for your help.
