How to create a central iTunes library for several Macs/PCs?

Hi!
I have 2 PCs, one MacBook and hopefully soon an AppleTV. I want them all to use the same Data. On PC and Mac the songs should be available with Coverflow... same for Apple TVs BackRow.
The Audio-Files should be stored on a Synology DS207 (NAS, small Linux-Server with FTP, AFP and SMB support, as well as DAAP).
DAAP would be great, but AFAIK it cannot handle things like cover art...
What about storing the local iTunes library on a mounted smb device? It is not so important to add files from every iTunes client to the library, but I every iTunes should have
a library like a local library (covers...)
Any ideas? Or does someone know a nice tutorial?

Let me get this straight, you have an external drive of some description that all computers can access and this is where your music files will be located.
If so, one way to use the same music files on all computers would be to link the shared music folder to each iTunes library on the seperate computers - this can be done by dragging and dropping files or folders (make sure that you've gone to preferences - general and deselected "copy to iTunes library when adding.") However - this method would mean that each computer has a different library!
(You could always get one library linked and create all your playlists and then see if you can copy that library file and place it in the iTunes folders on the other computers - but this may not work if the file path is different - but worth a shot)

I have several user accounts for my osx. One I use at home, one at work etc.
What I never have been able ta manage is a way to use the same iTunes library (the same music files) for the different accounts.
When a new user profile is created, everything in it is set to scratch.
I have tried all kinds of tricks:
- Direct iTunes to look for It's library on the other users folder (wich doesn't really work, cus even if you are Admin you don't have access to other users folders through another user).
- Creat an alias for the other library-folder and refere to it.
etc. etc. You name it...

Here's a possible workaround:
Create the slideshow in Iphoto and add a theme and music.
Install Picasa and it will include the slideshow on it's indexed list.
Upload the slideshow to PicasaWebAlbums and send the link to anyone you wish.
The music and theme is preserved.
Caveat: My playback pictures appear darker than usual but that could be just lousy photography...:)

I created an extra iTunes library for my wife and now i can't find either of them

I created an extra iTunes library for my wife by following the instructions on Apples website and everything was working perfect. So when I opened iTunes i could select whether i was using her phone or mine.
Everything was perfect then today I have turned my Macbook on as I wanted to transfer a CD onto my phone. I plugged my phone in and selected iTunes then selected "choose iTunes library" I can not find either iTunes folders anywhere. I have been searching my Macbook for the last two hours and can't find anything anywhere.
Can anybody help???

Try this...
Quit the Mac App Store if it's open. From the menu bar App Store/ Quit App Store. Or Command + Q on your keyboard.
Launch iTunes. From the iTunes menu bar click iTunes / Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
Click: *Reset warnings and Reset cache*. Now go back to the menu bar and click Store / Sign Out.
Try the MAS. If you still have problems, follow the paths here. ~ (Tilde) represents your Home folder.
~/Library/Caches.com.apple.appsstore./Cache.db. Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.appstore.plist and com.apple.storeagent.plist files to the Trash.
~/Library/Cookies. Move the com.apple.appstore.plist and the Cookies.plist files to the Trash.
Restart your Mac. Relaunch the MAS. Try again.

After consulting all the forums, I see that Apple is not answering this simple question: so disrespectful!
Please do something about it! All it takes is to write a little code: in the "Advanced Preferences (advanced????) give us an option that just asks you IF you want to create a replacement iTunes library before doing it! is this hard for you Mac guys????? External HD as iTunes library for 2+ Macs

I am looking for the best way for my external hard drive to serve as the iTunes library for both my work iMac and my personal MacBook.
If possible I want to be able to add music (from CD - yes I still like to support my local record shop - and from iTunes Store) to the library while using one computer, and have that automatically show up in iTunes when I open it on the other computer. Can this be done without having to select the new files and click "Add to library" every single time I open my other computer's iTunes? I sometimes go long periods without using one of my computers and add lots of music to my library, so it's tough to remember exactly what is new. If that can't be automatic, is there an easy way to search for the new files that aren't yet visible on the iTunes screen?
So basically I want to know if my all of the content and brains of my iTunes can be on an external HD that can be used with multiple computers, and each computer I use simply serves as a controller for that iTunes library and scans for updates each time it opens. I'm not interested in options that involve using a cloud/match/sharing service, as I am often without internet service.

Quit iTunes.
Drag the iTunes folder in the home folder to the trash but do NOT empty it yet.
Start iTunes and see if the songs play. No need to hold the Option key.
If everything works (play a song), you can empty the trash.

No need. iTunes will use the last library opened.
In order to access the music and library, you need to have the external connected and ready BEFORE you launch iTunes, else it will go back to the default location (Users/username/music) and create a new iTunes folder.
If this happens, simply hold the Option key again and choose the external drive.
You can use this drive on the other computer.
Simply plug it in and start iTunes while holding the Option key. This only needs to be done the first time unless you start iTunes with the external drive not attached then do as above.

Easy. Copy it from the old Mac to the new one.
There are a variety of techniques including Setup Assistant (as soon as you get your new MacBook Air, it will ask you if you want to transfer information from another computer), Migration Assistant (if you elect to transfer information later), enabling file sharing between the two computers, or copying your music to a flash drive or other storage device followed by importing it to iTunes.

Once your music library and everything else you want to transfer from the MacBook Pro resides on the new MBA, sync your iPod to the MBA. Sync the iPhone too when you get it, and they will both have identical iTunes music libraries.

HT1495 I followed Method 3 to create a separate iTunes library for each device, and now I can't find my original iTunes

Up until now, I have been keeping my images as Managed in the Aperture Library on my G5.
I need to create a sub-set of my Library for use on a MacBook Pro for an upcoming workshop. I would like to have some of my masters on the MBP drive so that I can work on them while away. When I get back, I would like to be able to merge the modified images/metadata with the main Library. Is this possible?
If not, another approach would be for me to move the entire Library to the Macbook, but first make all the Masters as Referenced files, and then Consolidate just the Masters I want to have with me back onto the MBP drive.
Any suggestions on an efficient way to do this would be greatly appreciated.

The problem with the approach you suggested is that some of the Projects have a large number of Images that I dont want on the MBP drive.
I suppose I could move the selected images to a Workshop Project, export that Project, and import it into the MBP Libary, then import it back into my main library when I am done.
Do folders, smart albums, etc get saved when Exporting/Importing Projects ?
If I move my 5-star images out of my original Projects into a Workshop project, work on them and change the metadata, and then put them back into their original projects later, will all of the changes move with them?

Hi all, I stoe all my Itunes music / photos / vids etc on an external hard drive and recently decided to erase and reinstall Mac OS X (Mac was running slow). I still have all my music on the external drive but need to recreate my itunes library. I tried 'File Add to Library but this just copies all the music back to my HDD.
Anyone have any ideas?

Check your preferences and make sure that iTunes recognises that the music folder is on the external drive and doesn't try to use the one in the default location. Connect your drive, open iTunes and go to iTunes>Preferences>Advanced and where it says "iTunes Music folder location" use the Change button to choose the folder on your external.

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there. (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
Longer answers if for any reason you do not think all library files are inside your iTunes folder (changed preferences settings at some point):

Hi all, I have a MacPro tower with iTunes set up and all is well with it. Now I just bought a MacBook Pro, and I would like to sync part of my iTunes library from my tower over to my MacBook Pro. I only need music though, with specific playlists and genres.
See I would love to keep the iTunes library on my tower as my master library, since I use it to sync with my iPhone and iPad already too. I want to still contiune to drop music onto the tower, and then be able to sync specific music only with my MacBook (much like it does with iPhones and iPad's). Is this at all possible??
Please note that I do NOT want to use iCloud by any means. If someone could please give me a run down on how to accomplish this task somewhat easily, it would be very much appreciated.

I think I may have come up with a solution. I'm using home sharing to copy what I need over to the MacBook, and I exported the playlists from my tower and imported them into my MacBook as well. So whenever I drop a few new songs onto the tower, I'll just open the MacBook and import those songs over right away as well. Will see if this works for the time being.
