How to create a dual boot on OSX Mavericks?

I've Mavericks and I want to install two more OS X (10.7 and 10.8) on the same machine. Is there any way to install earlier OS X along with the latest OSX ?
I've created partitions and tried to install there but a message says something like this "This OS X could not be installed on this MAC". Then I tried to create a bootable usb drive by "DiskMaker X" but that was also failed.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Hi!
Create a new partition for Windows XP and install it. This is no problem.
After this you must restore the Windows Vista boot loader. You can do this with EasyBCD. Install it and start the program.
Go to the "Add/Remove Entries" tab. You'll see that there's only one option available in the Vista bootloader at the moment. In the "Add an Entry" section, change the Drive in the dropdown menu from C:\ to E:\. Change Type to "Windows NT/2k/XP/2k3", and the Name to "Microsoft Windows XP". Then click "Add Entry" and "Save".
Then go to the "Manage Bootloader" tab. Make sure that "Reinstall the Vista Bootloader" is selected and then click "Write MBR".
Now you can restart the notebook and you should have a full working dual boot system.

  • How do create I dual-boot Mac?

I have recently installed Lion OS but have found that some Power Pc programmes don't work with Lion. I still want to use these applications. Is it possible to set up a dual-boot mac keeping Lion but also having Snow Leopard as well so I can use these apps, and how is this done?

I have done the same thing as you are talking about without problems.
Have a look here for instructions on how to do it (btw, it assumes you have the white SL install disk).

  • I need to know how to create a dual boot so that I can have Windows 7 and the Mac OS

I need this so that I can have Microsoft Access, because it's not available for Mac..
And, I have so many computer games that I have for Windows that I want to play on my Mac.
    Help please!

You do not open it yet.
First you need to read this: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup_Late2010.pdf
This will tell you when the Windows image is required.
Prepare for this on all fronts first ... backup/clone, and read the ENTIRE document.
Then ask about what to do with the Windows ISO.
At least in my humble opinion.  This can go badly quickly if you miss a step.

Which CD are you trying to use?
Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) originally came on DVD.
A media exchange program initially was available:

So maybe you did an exchange for CDs?

  • Creating a dual boot HD Windows 7 32 and Windows 7 64 bit OS

I have a 750 GB HD with one bootable partition of Windows 7 32 bit OS using 320 GB space. Was cloned from a HD that was physically 320 GB. Still have 400 GB unallocated space on the HD. HD is currently in a ultrabay and I can boot from either the internal 320 GB HD or the 320 GB partition on the 750 GB HD. Can put the Ultrabay in either a T61 or T61P laptop. Have the 64 bit install DVD for Windows 7 and would like to install it on the unpartitioned space on my 750 GB HD using some or all of the 400 GB unpartitioned space. How do I create the dual boot system on the Ultrabay 750 GB harddrive?

All you have to do is install the windows, it will install a boot manager so you can select among the operating systems.
Also understand that the drive installed in your ultrabay will run slower, so you're best to use the boot drives as your primary drive and use an ultrabay drive only for storage.

Enyone know how to get USB stick back to normal after creating a USB boot disk for Mavericks? https://discussions.apple.com/message/23527458#23527458

You should just be able to erase it using Disk Utiilty. I did with my 8Gb.
If not I have a USB deep format tool, but it only works with Windows: http://tinyurl.com/mwor6s9
You can download that and unzip it, then run it on a PC to fully erase and format the flash drive. Format it in FAT, and then the Mac will read and mount it so you cna once again format it with HFS extended for Mac use.

  • Isolated dual boot with OS mavericks and mountain lion

I just created a dual boot between mavericks and mountain lion (1 physical drive with two partitions) but I'm having troubles where they each see each other.  Bin/ lib/ etc are fine (i think) as they are added via environment vars but it seems as though the spotlight privacy directories are shared.  For instance, I thought I could simply add the other partition to the Spotlight Privacy list, ie while using mountain lion add /Volumes/Mavericks to the privacy list.  However, when I added the volume in one, it also appears in the other.  Another issue I've encountered is that while compiling on ML, I was getting errors complaining about the 10.9 sdk.
So, can anyone advise on the proper way to isolate these two operating systems with a dual boot scenario?
    Thanks
    Adam

Create two partitions on the hard drive. Install each OS on its own partition. This will only work if the computer can be booted from either version.

  • Attempted to install windows 7 for dual boot but OSX installation now missing???

I've tried to install Wndows 7 on my macbook air for dual boot but got the kernal error on boot.
I loaded from the CD again and it sucessfully installed win 7 but when I start the macbook air up it only appears to have windows installed?
How can I get my OSX back?

For some odd reason when you use bootcamp to install the second OS bootcamp is defaulted as the primary OS you will need to hold option key to select the apple OS then in the sys preference under startup disk select apple as primary.

  • Macbook Pro - 2 Hard Drives - Dual Boot OS OSX + Windows

Hello guys, I've been facing an issue here
I bought an SSD 2 years ago and changed the original MBP HD. I did a fresh install of OSX while still having my optical drive. Everything is fine with the OSX installation.
Recently I bought an enclosure and installed the original MBP HD drive into the optical drive slot. Now i have two HD's on my MBP (Early 2011 - Unibody Model)
The configuration for the Hard Drives is as follows:
SSD Drive - disk 0 - OS X Running fine
HD Drive - disk 1 - clean formatted to accommodate Windows 7 installation
I started the BootCamp Utility formated the second hard drive to install windows from bootable USB. Everything works fine until the point where the Windows installation actually expands the files. I always get the same error, that windows cannot be installed on that drive and any changes will be reverted back to original settings.
Several hours after researching the whole thing this is what I've got:
The error that I am getting is for the configuration of the drives, a fix to this problem is to take out my SSD, install the old HD in its original position, install windows normally, put my SSD back in its position and put the old HD in the optical drive and thus I will have the Dual Boot of two OS in two different HD's. That's really really awful as I have to take appart again the whole thing and swap between the drives till the process is finished. This is because The EFI boot + Windows to be installed require the disk that windows to be installed to be on main slot - disk 0.
My question here is, is there any fix to the BootCamp assistant to let me install windows on the hard drive that it is located on the disk 1 position?
Moreover is there any way to install windows through the environment of OSX with the use of a VM, but, the windows to be a bootable OS rather than a VM bootable image? (on disk 1 - optical drive SATA port). - What I mean by that is, while running OS X normally on disk 0 run a VM software that will mimic the environment of a bootloader so that I can install windows on disk 1, but after I shut down my computer, windows should be accessible on disk 1 as a normal installed OS.
Sorry for the long post and thank you very much for your time, any suggestions would be really helpful.

You can install Parallels or Fusion, either will work. When you setup either Parallels or fusion you can tell it to use your already installed Boot Camp installation of Windows as its target guest operating system.
You would then just boot into OSx, start your VM (Parallels or Fusion), then you'll have access to both OSx and Windows without having to reboot.
I have this setup and two monitors. I have my Windows running on my external monitor and OSx running on my Macbook Pro monitor at the same time.
Beware that you will need to re-register Windows to get a second key. This is free and easily done either online or by calling the Microsoft registration number. The reason for needing a second key is that Windows, although only installed once in your Boot Camp partition sees the virtual hardware created by your virtual machine and thinks it has been reinstalled on a new computer.

  • How can I initiate dual boot install from a CMD window...?

Laptop hardware meets sys req for Win 10 and currently runs 8.1
    Samsung RV-511-S01UK
    i3 380M @ 2.53Ghz
    6GB RAM
Discrete Nvidia 315M 1GB dedicated VRAM
Having first tried 10 inside a VM... and it looks ok.... time to try it on real hardware instead of the restricted emulation.
I'm attempting to clean install and create a DUAL_BOOT on prepared partition
ISO downloaded direct from the correct link (SHA-1 checked)
USB... or DVD... installer created with the MS installer tool.
ALL attempts to install by booting from either installer medium, trying builds 9926, 10041 and 10049 (64 and 32 bit), end before they start....... the process stops completely at the very first screen.... the logo screen.... the indicator dots beneath
the logo screen which appear as standard to 'indicate' that a 'process' is happening in the background NEVER appear... even after an 8 hour wait in one instance.
Even if I follow the install instructions supplied on the download page here instead of booting direct:
    5. Double-tap or double-click setup.exe from the installation media, and then follow the steps.
it gets to a point within the process and has to restart.... then it stops as soon as the logo screen appears just as it does when I try and boot from the created installers.
There seems to be a problem at the Windows logo screen which halts the entire installation process !!! It suggests a BIOS/Win 10 conflict, but only one way to really find out..... process log...?
The only way to discover where the error lies is to observe the process happening as it happens in real time (if that's possible) or create log file of my attempt.... from within a CMD window...? Unfortunately I don't know the language of CMD code
    well enough.
I would like someone to assist with the correct code on how to initiate the install from within a CMD window so that I can see the process happen in real time within the window and therefore observe exactly where the instruction is failing.... but
as stated if running a CMD during install is not possible then a saved log file to refer to after fail and reboot into 8.1
This should make it easier to define the problem and as such discover the solution
If someone can supply the code it would be very helpful..... if no-one here knows I'll pop over to the Linux forum and ask one of the people there after setting up Ubuntu with a spare partition for the Win 10 TP
    cheers

    Hi base1268,
Can you find the following log files when you reboot into Windows 8.1?
    C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log
    C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log
    C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.log
Actually, for current situation, I suggest you use native boot to try Windows 10 Technical Preview:

it still works for Windows 10 Technical Preview.

  • How do you do dual boot without Dual activation for CS3?

I know this has been discussed but I can't find the post called Daryl Pritchard, "Activating CS3 with both Vista and XP Pro on same system" #3, 21 May 2007 12:49 am .  That link seems to be dead.
I'm slow to make the switch, but I'm planning to install Vista on the same box I've had XP Pro on.  I have a LOT of software on this box (it normally takes 34 hours to install everything from scratch) including VIsual Studio (2003, 2005, 2008), Lotus Notes designer (R6.5, R8), 3D Studio Max, etc. etc. etc.  I'm not ready to flip the switch and just run the Vista upgrade.  I want to dual boot with XP on one partition and Vista on the other, so that I can boot to XP if something doesn't seem to be running correctly under Vista.
Here is my dilemna.  I also have Photoshop CS3 installed on my laptop, and I need it there because I travel every few weeks and still have to manipulate images.  I'd like to avoid deactivating licenses everytime I get on a plane or drive across town.  I don't want to have to use up both of my "activations" when I'm staying within the intent of the Eula - it's only going to be used on one machine.
How has everyone else faced this challenge?  I know there are plenty of people with dual boot set ups.
I'll deactivate Photoshop on XP Pro if I have to, but that's going to be a headache if I have to turn on the laptop everytime I work in XP on the desktop and need to modify a PSD image.

I believe you can only deactivate/activate 20 times, precisely to keep
people from swapping the two licenses amongst more than 2 computers, so
deactivating on your travel-computer will only work for the next few times
    you do it.
Depending on what things you do to your images, you might be able to get by
with using Elements to work with the PSDs.  The newer versions of Elements
lets you work with Layers so it may be ok.  Install the PSE trial and see
    how well it works.
If you must have Photoshop, and one copy needs to be on your laptop, then
you must choose dual-boot you want to use it on, and perhaps install the
trial on the other bootable partition and if it works fine for everything,
and at the end of 30-days, choose which one to keep activated, or decide
that you can upgrade your XP.  I think you should attempt to upgrade it,
anyway, just to see if it's even possible.   I think you can uninstall the
upgrade if you do it right away, and get back to your XP...I had to do that
when my graphics card refused to work, even though the Vista Upgrade Advisor
didn't complain.  Installing Vista from scratch seemed to work.  I just
bought a new HD and reinstalled everything.
Another thing to consider is that Windows 7 will be available for retail
purchase before Halloween and people like it better than Vista as far as
running things faster, so maybe just skip Vista.  The only glitch I had was
having to uninstall Nero's packet-writing (CDRW as a floppy) software after
I upgraded to Vista and it didn't quite work and I had to use a Nero-clean
utility to get rid of it.  It isn't compatible with Win7 and I could have
gotten around the problem by merely uninstalling Nero before upgrading and
putting it back, afterwards.  I have an older version of Nero was my actual
    problem.
I am running the Win 7 Ultimate RTM from my MSDN subscription and like it a
lot...more transparency and they finally combined the quick-links with the
actual task-bar so you can just pin things down there and they are
highlighted if they're running or not highlighted if not--sort of like a Mac
has been doing for a while, but with much smaller icons if you want.

  • How do I install dual-boot Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 on one hard disk ?

I tried to install Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 on same disk using CDs, but
the second installation overwrote the first Solaris which was installed
previoudly on the half-disk size partition of same disk.
How do I install two Solarises on one hard disk ?
    Thanks
    Yakov

There are no tricks to get Solaris to dual boot on the same drive. Just allocate and pick the free slices not used by the first Solaris install when you put in the second install. Technically speaking there is nothing preventing you from running seven separately bootable Solaris instances on the same drive (one of 8 available slices is overlap -- slice 2) provided you use a swap file on a root partition instead of reserving a whole slice for swap.

  • How to create a Lion boot disk for Lion on a MBPRD?

I have a unique version of Lion on my MBPRD.  How do I create a Lion Boot Disk for this unique version?

Why is it a Unique version of Lion? The only versions of Lion are ones for older Macs, Before the Mid 2012 models came out, and a version that includes the newer drivers for the newest model Macs, Current shipping Mid 2012 models.
If you are talking about a version for the new Mid 2012 models then you will need to wait for Apple to update their Lion Download servers because right now they do not have the newest Lion version available on those servers.

Which chip set and SATA drivers I need an how to apply these to make a successful dual boot with XP Pro SP2?
I have Vista Home premium installed.
I have done as much as I can do.
I have even tried to run virtual pc but Vista home Premium does not support it.

    Hello
Check also THIS page. At the end you can find a guide for "Slipstreaming SATA driver into WinXp boot CD using nLite".
I don't understand why you mean this notebook must support everything. As I can see this notebook model is not supported for WXP and if you will install it successfully you will still missing important drivers, tools and utilities and you will not be able to use WXP as Vista.
On one side I understand you but other way to have WXP with limited functionality is also not the solution.
