How to create a restore 10.6.8 starup on an external drive

I would like to create a restore disk on an external HD for my OS 10.6.8
I have arrive that is partitioned; one being used with Time Machine for a backup, another for OS 10.8 as a startup. I'm just trying the 10.8 for a while to see if I like it, and it works with most of my Apps. The other partition I plan to use as a Restore for my iMac that is using Snow Leopard.
Please advise. By the way i'm somewhat ignorant, so be specific please.
Thank you

OK I understand now. Your best bet is to do what you intended in the first place and make a bootable clone of the 10.6.8 iMac on a separate partition of the external hard drive. I use both  SuperDuper and CCC for cloning. Here are some links to discussions of the two.

You don't have installer discs with that model. What do you need to do? USB and Thunderbolt external drives do not require any special software. If you need to partition and format them, then use Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.

Not sure if I understand correctly?
Do you want to move 280 GB of photos from iPhoto on your Mac to an external hard drive?
If that is the case, iCloud has nothing to do with it. You can move your iPhoto library to an external drive to free up space on your internal drive.

You can enjoy improved sound when you use an updated sound driver on the pre-installed sound system

To install the updated sound driver follow the steps below:
    1. Click Start and click Control Panel.

    May I ask
If I create a restore point before ding this, if it all goes wrong will I be able to system restore and have the old sound driver working?
Is the driver folder found in Device Manager and Sound, Video and Game Controllers?
    Many thanks.

    Hi Peter,
Yes, if you would create the restore point before you will perform the driver installation then you will be able to restore the system to the early time point and you will get the old sound driver back on you system.
I think this is a good idea to create the restore point.

  • How can I restore my library that was erased off external drive....

I just accidently erased 90% of my itunes library that was reading off an external drive. The last 10% was recently purchases music that I downloaded directly to my laptop hard drive and remains intact (makes sense?). Basically I wiped out the external drive that my 90% library read to.
I was able uncover hidden files off my ipod and inturn copy my library back to the external drive but the big question is - is there a way to restore all this without having to start over Itunes? Can I reimport it off the external drive from the ipod copyover? One thing I can't do is copy it back onto the laptop hard drive because there's nowhere near enough space. Thanks for you help!

OK first thing you might want to do is read this post of mine from the other day...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6296361&#6296361
because, well I am too lazy to type much of it again.
But the part that really is for you is about half way down, just above the link where it starts with "If it was me, " which is what you want to do. In your case, you would use the "Add to library..." command twice. Once to add all the files from the external, and then again to grab all the ones off the internal, if you want everything located in one location. You can then remove the ones from your internal AFTER you verify that they made it to the external ok.
As noted in that post at the end, but worth repeating, doing it with that method keeps everything all together (database files, media files, etc) in a single folder for your library rather than your database files on the internal and your media on the external or spread across both drives. If you ever need to move the library or want to use your library on other computers, you can simply move the folder or the entire drive and use the above instructions to open your library.

  • How do i move time machine backup to a new, bigger external drive in lion?

i did some research and cma across severla different ways to transfer my time mashine backup from an old hd to a bigger one. i dont want to lose my backup and i just want to make sure im doing the right thing. also there were different ways of doing it in leopard and snow leopard so now im wonderign if there is another way of doing it in lion, which im usung.
    any help is appreciated.
    thank you

I would suggest you partition your new external drive and create a 2nd partition that's large enough to hold files you want to off load so you can free up space.
Or if you're using Time Machine, each backup is suppose to allow you to go back in time and restore files that have been deleted or modified since the last backup. So, if you were to start using your new external drive and performed an initial full backup in Time Machine; then delete your iPhoto file and do another backup, you should be able to go into Time Machine and restore your iPhoto file from your first backup. I would still off load the files to a 2nd partition just to be on the safe side and if Time Machine backups were to somehow become corrupted. Any important files, in my opinion, should be backed up in more than one place... just in case.

  • How to copy from time-machine backup of iTunes copied to external drive onto micro SD card

    del Name: MacBook Air  M
    Have a new MacBook Air  6.2,  Processor:Intel Core i5, 1.4, Memory: 8 GB, HD: 256 GB

  • Can I restore a complete system to a bare external drive using my Time Machine disk?

My iMac hard drive appears to have gone "belly up"... no system disk found on boot up.   I have a current Time Machine external drive for this iMac.  Can I use the TM Disk to clone my old system onto a new EXTERNAL Disk.  (I have access to several other Apple computers that would allow me to boot an external disk... IF I can re-create the one that died.)
Thanks much for your thoughts and ideas.

You can use the TM backup to Restore it to another External drive.I wouldn't call it Cloning as that is something different than doing a Restore from TM backup. You'll ned to connect both drives to the system and boot the system from the original reinstall DVD that came with it. then there should be an option to restore your system from a TM backup and you would point it to the other external drive. You may want to use Disk utility first to partition and format that othr external Mac Extended (Journaled) before you try doing the restore.

  • How do I access my HD while running an OS on external drive?

So my MBP crashed the other day and when it boots it goes to Disk Utility X. When I tried to repair my HD, it says it cannot be repaired I should backup as much as possible and then format the HD. I did some forum and Apple discussion search and found a few similar scenarios where backing up with Image or Time Machine isn't a choice. (And of course I am one of the "not so wise" population who did not backup in the past.) One of the solution I found was to install an OS on an external drive and then retrieve files from the new OS. I've installed a new OS but aside from Disk Utility I cannot see my original HD. So here's my question:
How do I access my original HD when I'm running an OS installed on my External Drive? I've partitioned the ED to 2 portions. 1 is MAC journaled(?) GUID in order to install OS, the other is MS-FAT so I have easy access to files.
PS. One solution I read was to switch the hard drive from the ED with the HD on the MacBook and then retrieve it that way but I don't have access to 2 MacBooks. Plus I'm having the hardest time just trying to open my ED's enclosure...
I appreciate your time and help! TRULY!!!!
    Thank you so so much!!!!

So I tried to access it with Terminal and learned how to use command to find HDDs to gain access. Here's what I'm encountering:
I was able find the HD with "diskutil list" command but it seems to me that my HD was not mounted because when I did "ls /volumes" and "df -h" it did not show up. When I tried to mount the HD with "diskutil mount /dev/disk0s2" The response I got was "Volume on disk0s2 failed to mount".
Does that mean my HD is fried??
    Thanks again!!!

  • How do I get multiple folders to appear again on an external drive after I accidentally did a 'remove' from my folder list?

    Help please!
I accidentally did a right click remove of my folders on an external drive. The external drive shows in my folders list, but none of the folders that are still on it.
The photos are still in the folders on the drive and in their folders.  I tried an import to make the folders appear, and LR sees all the photos as existing in the catalog, so it knows about the photos.  And LR does not re-import them.
Just want to have the folders show up again in my folder list on the left.
Anyone know how to fix this error I made? Thank you.

For anyone interested, I had to add a folder to my external drive, then right click it and select SHOW PARENT FOLDER.  Thank you ADOBE SUPPORT, I am so relieved, feel stupid, but relieved.

  • How do I give myself read/write access/permissions for my external drive?

Im a brand new Mac user, so please stay with me.
I have an external drive and I can't delete, modify, ANYTHING on it. When I go to "Get Info" it says "You can only read" under sharing & permissions. How do I change this?

When you get info on the external drive, at the very bottom is a box you can check
    "Ignore ownership on this volume"...
If you check that, then see if you can delete and move things around.
If that doesn't work then try clicking on the + sign and adding you as an admin so you can Read & Write.

  • How do you put a back up system on a firewire external drive?

I was taking my new MacBook in to the genius bar to diagnose a possible defective USB port. I wanted to clone the entire hard drive to an external drive for a backup. To do that, one must start up from the external drive. I tried to install a startup system from the install disks that came with the computer. This was not permitted. I assume they can only be used for a restore. I tried to clone the drive directly but the resulting system would not boot. I used my Tiger install disks from my previous system on a PowerPC iMac to install to the hard drive but there was no way to update this system to an Intel version. It does not seem reasonable that I should have to buy new copy of Tiger(Intel) to do this type of backup. There must be a way.

"... I wanted to put a simple clean install on an external drive before cloning. There seems to be no way to do that without purchasing a new copy of the OS."
That is correct. At any rate, a "clean install" would not be a backup of your "existing" system and therefore, would not serve any real useful function.
"It was my understanding that a correct clone could only be made after booting from an external source. Otherwise the active system files would not be copied correctly."
Completely untrue. Cloning does not involve any files loaded into RAM. It just copies files from the HD. Cloning your "active" system will give you a true backup as it will preserve all of your settings, updates, apps and any other mods you have made.
Follow the instructions posted above by "cornelius" and you will have a bootable backup that is an exact copy of your system as it currently exists. Of course, any changes to the system made after cloning will not be saved on the backup copy. For this reason, I re-clone my system every time I add, remove or change anything of importance (this is in addition to my data backups which are done separately).
