How to create a stand alone app with Jdeveloper?
Hi,
I have a created an application with JDeveloper using the ADF framework. It's a simple frontend to some database tables giving the user the possibility to create and update records.
Is it possible to create a stand-alone application from JDeveloper without having to install any application server? I have tried to follow the documentation but somehow I only find descriptions of web enabled applications.
That's not what I want. I want a (windows) application that can 'talk' to the database. Would be great to have just a .jar file to deploy to the users computer.
Is this possible with JDeveloper? Or am I totally wrong?
Thanks for any help!
Bruno
You don't need an OC4J.
You just need to make sure the ADF libraries you are using are on the classpath of your application. (Your default JAR won't contain them).
Have a look at the command line that JDeveloper uses to run your project (it is in the log file) - copy paste this into a command line and you should be able to run your code from outside JDeveloper.
Read more on this in the online help under the deployment to JAR file chapter and possibly the webstart part.

How to make a stand alone app?
I have played aroung with Java fore the last eighteen months or so. I feel a lot more comfortable with it than I used to, and as my confidence grows I am trying to come up with real life situations where my programming could help. Nothing to ambitious but just little apps that other people could use (probably non-programmers at that).
Up to now I have wrote applets that run in browsers, which serve their purpose, but because of the security restrictions applets have limitations. I have wrote apps and run them from either a DOS prompt or from JPadPro. What I have got used to with the internet downloading little apps that once installed I can simply double click on the desk-top icon and away we go. I was wondering whether java has anything like that to offer? I believe that the Java Web Start is to do with this sort of matter, but everytime I open it my P.C. crashes.
I am looking for a way to present my apps so that non technical people would use. Any advice would be received gratefully, Dave. You can buy programs which will turn your .class file into a .exe file, but the key word is buy. I have yet to find a free one that dosn't put some disclamer up when you run your program. I personally prefer using an excecutable jar to run my stand alone apps. It still requires the JRE to be installed on the client PC but you can just include that with your program and have the user install it on thier PC if they don't already have it on there. For information on making an executable jar, you should search the forums, I remeber seeing a user made tutorial in there somewhere that was very helpful to me. This site also has some tutorials on doing it as well, but somethings in it are not so clear. Good Luck.

Error 1935 while trying to use installer to install stand alone app with VISA
I am trying to create my first installer for LV 8 and it is pretty different from LV 7. I am creating an installer to bundle my Vi and the Run time engine in one package. In my program I use VISA read/write so I also selected NI-VISA Config. Support version 3.4.1. When I try to install the application on a computer that does not have LV or the runtime engine I get error 1935 saying that it cannot install the VISA config. Then when I try to run my program LV doesn't try to take over the COM port because VISA is not installed. Any one have any ideas? Thanks
Hi,
Here is a link that describes a possible solution to what you are seeing. I would also install the latest version of NI-VISA, linked here. Please let me know if you are still running into problems after trying these suggestions. Have a great day!

Will CS4 Photoshop work as a stand alone app. with CS3 Design Premium?
I am financially stuck with my Power PC G5 and Leopard 10.5.8 but want to be able to process raw files from newer cameras that are not supported
by Leopard. I realize I could either use Canon software to process or turn photos into DNG files but neither option works for me.
I just don't want to throw away money on C4 Photoshop if that version is full of bugs and won't interface with CS3 Bridge.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.there is one, just search with spotlight "Calculator".
It works great!
Hope this helps. -
How do you deploy a stand alone app/game in java
I have a few questions regarding creating a stand alone app for java.
1) What is the best way to deploy it? how would I create the exe, etc. I've read that you can create executable jars but this doesn't seem like something that would be user friendly
2) Is there a way to deploy the game/app with it's own JVM so the hosts machine doesn't have to have it installed? How would I go about doing this?
3) How would I run the app in full screen? What libraries are available?
Any other advice/comments welcome.@morgair: There are plenty of good reasons for using Java to develop software, even when you only plan on targeting Windows. As good as Java distribution is there is no way to guarantee that they a) have Java installed and more likely b) have the version you target installed. Telling a user that they need to go to a second website in order to download and install more software is a huge turn off.
Most PC users have no experience with a .jar so when they download it they just don't know what to do (even if all they need to do is double-click just like a .exe). Giving out an executable .jar is another turnoff.

There are some java to native compilers that will turn your java code into a natice .exe that will run on it's own or with a bundled library. However they are either old, buggy and badly supported, or extremely expensive (googling Java native compiler should give you some good results). There are also plenty 'java to exe' pieces of software. Rather then compiling the java code to native code they wrap the .jar up inside a .exe. When you run the .exe it unpacks the .jar and runs it. To the user it looks like a .exe, however it's still just an executable jar and still requires Java to be pre-installed on their machine in order to run (although some can offer custom error messages if Java is not found).
If Java is setup, then executable jars are essentially act the same as exe's. For creating them, if you are using NetBeans then they are already available in the project/dist folder after you build. You can also do it on the command line but I never need to so I don't know how. However as a tutorial [this site looks promising|http://neptune.netcomp.monash.edu.au/javahelp/howto/jar.htm].
I personally use a small .exe which I built using the D programming language. It reads from a text file in the same directory and executes each line in turn. Typically all the text file contains is 'java -jar MyProg.jar'. This way my .jars for the user looks like a .exe.
Instead of a .exe you could also use a .bat. There are also some .bat to .exe converters online, although I haven't tried any of them so use at your own risk.
sarcasteak wrote:
2) Is there a way to deploy the game/app with it's own JVM so the hosts machine doesn't have to have it installed? How would I go about doing this?Yes, you are allowed to redistribute the Sun Java runtime. Just zip up the JRE on your machine and include it with the app/game. You'll also need to ensure that whatever starts the jar uses your unzipped JRE and not the JRE on their machine. The exe I described above also allows this by having the text file contain something like: './my_jre/bin/java -jar MyProg.jar'.
But first you should also take a look at the license restrictions, they should be in the JREs directory. For example you must redistribute the complete JRE which is a problem if your app is just a few megabytes (when zipped the runtime is usually over 30mb). There are probably plenty of topics on this forum which already discuss redistribution of the JRE.
sarcasteak wrote:
3) How would I run the app in full screen? What libraries are available? If it's an app then it should be approximately:
JFrame frame = new JFrame();
frame.setExtendedState(JFrame.MAXIMIZED_BOTH);or;
JFrame frame = new JFrame();
frame.setExtendedState(frame.getExtendedState() | JFrame.MAXIMIZED_BOTH);However if you want a proper full screen then you need to use the [Full-Screen exclusive mode|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/extra/fullscreen/exclusivemode.html], approximately:
JFrame frame = new JFrame();
GraphicsEnvironment.getLocalGraphicsEnvironment().getDefaultScreenDevice().setFullScreenWindow( frame );I've also heard plenty of people recommend using java web-start for desktop java apps. Personally I've never used it, but it's something you might want to research.

Stand-Alone application with LabView 7.0 getting error can't find DAQmx clear task.vi
I have attempted to create a stand alone vi with the Build Application or Shared Library(dll) in LabVeiw 7.0
When I put it on another PC to test it I get the error "can't find DAQmx clear task.vi"
the other PC has Labview 7.0 and DAQmx 8.1 also.
I believe my problem is in the source tab where you are supposed to add support and dynamic vi's I have search the forums and Ni's data base and have not found a solution.
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hi LabTech09,
When you run the executable on the other computer is when you get this error? Do you have the exact same versions of LabVIEW and DAQmx on both computers? Does the dialog allow you to navigate to the DAQmx clear task.vi? If so, you can find these VIs in C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 7.0\vi.lib\DAQmx\configure\task.llb. Does the executable work on the development machine (the machine it was compiled on)?

Is mp3 licensing required for stand alone apps created with Flash Builder?
I've been writing some interactive educational software in ActionScript that utilizes Adobe AIR and plays mp3 files to communicate/instruct the user. I was wondering if I would need to pay mp3 licensing fees based on what I found at mp3licensing.com
I wrote to the folks at mplicensing.com and got the following question in reply:
Will the software itself include mp3 decode (playback) capability, or will it be using the decoder provided in Android. If the software doesn’t include mp3 code itself, but simply includes mp3 files for playback by the hardware device mp3 code, than you would need our content distribution license, not our electronic gaming license.
If this is true, then it may be that no license is needed at all, since we exempt from the need for our license any entity with mp3 revenues below USD $100,000 per year.
I responded:
I am writing this software in ActionScript using Adobe Flash Builder to create a stand alone application that will be bundled with Adobe AIR and use Adobe AIR to run. AIR supports Android, iOS, PC desktops, and Macs.
they replied:
I am not sure if AIR will play .mp3 files. If it does, and your code does not have mp3 encode or decode functionality, and AIR is simply used to play the content, and your revenues do not exceed USD $100,000 per year, our license is not required.
My question now is: Does Adobe AIR use the decoder provided in Android or does it have it's own decoding code? Are we subject to the licensing fees for games, etc when distributing programs that play MP3 files using Adobe AIR?
Thanks,
RobertThat site helps a little bit, but not totally. My existing server is Windows 2003 with 5 CALs included, and it works, though not because I understand the head-spinning details of Microsoft licensing. For example, I have no idea if I am actually
using the CALs, since the only thing ever done on that server (aside from web, email, and FTP) is me logging in by RDP to administer it.
I never considered 2008 Web edition because I might want to install something like the Access GUI, and the Web edition seems to forbid that. It was not clear if you could install third-party ftp server or mail server also. Web edition was a mysterious
product and is not my reference point.
It would be nice if Essentials could run a web server, since it's cheaper and simpler in terms of licensing. But nowhere is that stated yea or nay.
If I buy 2012 standard, do I need to spring for 5 CALs also? I need to administer by RDP, and have the other server drop backups onto the disk of the new one. -
How do you create a stand alone application using DAQmx when your application SCXI hardware isn't on the computer I am using to create the application? The DAQmx assitant won't allow me to create a task with hardware that isn't in my system.
You will need to have at least the DAQ device in your computer to add the chassis. When you add the chassis, don't auto detect the modules. You will have to add the terminal blocks and tell MAX which SCXI module will be connected to the DAQ device. Just make sure you don't test the chassis, when its not there.
I hope this helps.

When running a "stand-alone" APP..how do I send midi from Logic?
Hi all,
When running a "stand-alone" APP..how do I send midi from Logic?.....Please no IAC stuff it doesn't work.......thanx
SvKusing IAC here no problems. works very well.
you can host your au's in another app such as soundflower or au lab, but you are still going to need to get it to hear midi. you can use physical midi ports with something like a MTP midi interface, and getting the midi by routing the out of one port to the in of another (midi loop) but you have to be careful logic doesn't listen to the same midi signal or everything will jam up (midi feedback). -
AS it stands now, in order to use the calculator that comes with the Dashboard, you cannot read from a list of numbers in, lets say, word or excel. The dashboard is full screen and nothing can stand along side it. Is there a way to get the calculator from the dashboard to appear along with other programs? Can anyone recommend a calculator which will work as a stand alone app?
there is one, just search with spotlight "Calculator".
It works great!

How can I publish a stand-alone file with Captivate 8?
I have just downloaded the new Captivate 8, but I an not sure how to publish a stand-alone, interactive file now. In previous versions, one could publish an .exe file that didn't require a browser to work. In the new version, there appears to be two options: HTML 5/SWF or video. The video option publishes a .mp4. Is there still a way to publish a .exe?
Thank you!Frankly I am a little tired of Adobe stonewalling on the issue of removing exe and dmg publication facility from Adobe Captivate 8. What a load of flimsy excuses from Adobe!!!! In Cap 7 I exported to exe and dog all the time and I truly miss this facility. Why does Adobe remove a perfectly good facility when upgrading?
It all makes me believe that Captivate 8 was rushed out without much thought other than to get a 'not working correctly' responsive design bit built in. Did they not think about customer research?
And so, I've just paid over £300 to upgrade to a version of Captivate (8) I won't be using much. This disgusts me and I am sure I am not alone.
And yes, why is Captivate not part of Creative Cloud? I ask this question and I have asked it before. Adobe will NEVER answer this question.
Adobe. Please try and LISTEN to what your customers are saying.

Stand alone application with VISA
Hello,
I build a stand alone installer application from my VI using LV 7.1 VI which contains some VISA serial communications with a standard RS232 port. In build application wizard settings I checked the Serial Port Suport in Advanced settings in Installer .When I installed this stand-alone app on a new PC without LV installed the communication didn´t work: Error -1073807298 - Could not perform operation because of I/O error.
I don't know if I have to install something else on the target machine. I have seen some topics in discussion forum about the VISA run machine. I imagined it would be included in the installation I had created. If someone could help me I would thank.
CeliaHi Celia,
You might check to make sure that the VISA Resource Name you are providing in your application is the same as the name the new machine is using. If you build the application and it is looking for a specific resource that does not exist on the new machine, you might see an error similar to this one.

Web Services - Issue with running OC4J stand alone server from JDeveloper
I created a stand alone OC4J App. server instance in JDeveloper. I deployed my Webservice (WebServices.deploy) to that OC4J server.
Now I want to test my web service. I opened a browser window and I specfied the URL as
http://localhost:<RMI Port#>/<Project1>-context-root/<Webservice name>.
Default RMI Port#23791.
http://localhost:23791/<Project1>-context-root/<Webservice name>.
and I am getting the following error message
ã vInvalid protocol verification, illegal ORMI request or request performed with an incompatible version of this protocolvInvalid protocol verification, illegal ORMI request or request performed with an incompatible version of this protocol.
Could you please let me know, what's going on.
Thanks!OK, so there's two threads in this email.
1. When using a Web browser client and an OC4J standalone instance, the default address of the OC4J website is http://host:8888/.
The port you keep referring to is the ORMI port. That is a different protocol that is used with EJBs, and our remote deployment mechanism. As you have observed, JDeveloper uses it to deploy to the OC4J instance.
2. The root problem you are seeing is related to the message you posted on the console.
OC4J 10g (10.1.3) Default Web Site. Application: bc4j does not exist. Error creating Web application: webapp
Because this web app is misconfigured, its not starting so you can't access it.
In the j2ee/home/config/default-web-site.xml file, there is a reference to an application called BC4J -- which is not available on the server as a deployed application.
So you need to correct that situation -- BC4J is not normally present in a vanilla OC4J standalone distribution.
You can try editing the j2ee/home/config/default-web-site.xml file and remove the <web-app> entry that mentions BC4J and then try starting OC4J.
If you don't have a lot of time invested in configuring the instance, you could also try extracting oc4j_extended.zip again and starting with a fresh one.
cheers

Installing Cover Flow as a stand alone app in iTunes 11?
Cover Flow used to be a stand alone app before it became part of iTunes. Can it be used with iTunes 11, which deleted that view option?
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/19081/coverflow
When I installed it and tried to use it I get the message: "Error Message: CoverFlow couldn't find any albums in your iTunes Library /Users/myname/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml."
I haven't had the time to check, but I think I have my main iTunes Library somewhere else, probably on an external HD. Unfortunately the only choice Cover Flow gives me is to quit. I don't have the option to chose the location of my library.
But maybe there is some way to go back several years and use Cover Flow as a separate app, until Apple comes to their senses.
There's more to check out in a Google search for Cover Flow, but I haven't done that yet...maybe someone more computer savvy than I is already doing that.
I'll continute to investigate when I have the time.
PaulThe app is very old and won't run on my (not very new) MacBook.
Would be awesome if someone had a solution to this. Thanks.
