How to create a wifi network with airport express in hotel room?

When I'm traveling to hotels that have internet, but not wifi, how do I set up a network using airport express?  When I've done this at home, I've used my laptop with the airport utility.  Can I do it with just an iPad?

Yes, you can use the Airport Utility for iPad here:

  • Creating wired/wireless network with Airport Express

I've just bought a MacBook, with it I bought an Airport Express.
I have a PC desktop that has a wired ADSL connection.
In the Mac store I was told that I could connect my ADSL modem to my Airport Express and then connect wirelessly from my PC and from my Mac.
I've just got home to discover that my modem connects to my PC with a USB port. I also don't seem to have wireless connectivity on my PC.
    So my quesitons are:
    1) Do I simply need to buy an ethernet cable to connect my modem to the Airport?
    2) Will a wireless dongle, in the back of the PC do the job of giving me a wireless connection, if so, how much does it impede speed?
    3) Is there anything I haven't thought about?
    Thanks v much
    Macbook

Thanks to Parker in particular on this.
The problem is now solved, but only after I went and bought a netgear wireless/router/modem.
As a consequence my previous wired USB connected modem is obsolete, as it seems is my AirportExpress.
Therefore my setup is that the desktop is wired into the router through an ethernet cable. The MacBook is picking up the wireless signal.
So far, it seems to be working satisfactorily.
    thanks again

This has been automated in the v6 utility. I am used to doing it manually in v5 utility which is also fairly easy.
Apple doco is also good to read.

    Note.
You cannot extend the guest network unless everything is up to date 7.6.3 firmware. And that is only with the TC as the main router in the network.
All apple routers can be configured as the main wireless or as the extend wireless.. so don't worry if a post uses express or extreme or TC.. they are for wireless, the same thing.

  • Extend wireless network with AirPort Express

How to extend the wireless network with AirPort Express and Belkin PlayMax as the primary router ?

Read the router's user manual on how to change your password.
If you are going to select another password, make sure it's one that you will NEVER forget AND no one else can figure it out.  Print it out & keep in a safe place.  A place that ONLY you know about AND never forget.

  • Can I expand an expanded network with airport express and extreme?

Hi, I would like to know, what happen if I have 1 Airport Extreme and 2 Airport Express.
First, my airport extreme is creating my wifi network in my house, and i have an airport express, expanding my wifi signal.
What happen if I want to add another airport express, like expanding the expanded network, something like this:
    Internet
          |
         |
         |(Ethernet Cable)
         |
         |
    Airport Extreme
         |
         |
         |(Wifi)
         |
         |
    Airport Express 1
         |
         |
         |(Wifi)
         |
         |
    Airport Express 2
So, can I expand my signal, just adding more airport express?

So, can I expand my signal, just adding more airport express?
No, since Apple will only allow you to "extend" the signal one time.
It is possible to have multiple extenders, but each extender must connect directly to the "main" base station....not to another device that is already extending the network.
Apple's extend setup works like the hub and spokes of a wheel. Your main base station is the "hub". Each extender resides at the end of a separate "spoke", and as such it communicates directly to the "hub"......not to another extender at the end of another spoke.

  • How do I set up iPad with airport express to stream music to stereo without internet connection?

how do i set up iPad and airport express to stream music to stereo without using internet connection.

Your 4th gen iPad does have the necessary software to connect to the AirPort Express but not to administer it. To do the later, you would need to install the AirPort Utility applet.
You said that your iPad can "see" the AirPort's wireless network, but can't connect. What happens exactly when you attempt to do so? Do any of your other wireless devices have any trouble connecting to the Express? Did you configure the Express for a closed network ... that is, not to broadcast its Network Name?

  • Extending the wifi signal with airport express

I tried to extend my network with a new apple express. My wireless internet service works from my older airport extreme base station, but the a window comes up that says "No base stations were found on "your network”. Choose a different network or go back.
Not sure why I can be connected wirelesslyto my network, but no base stations were found.

thanks for responding.  I've turned all off, then back on.  When I go to airport utility, this window comes up "
This version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station. Go to AirPort Service and Support for more information.
Again, my computer is connected via wi-fi, yet the airport base station is not recognized.  Certainly, when airport utility is opended we have the symbol for internet showing, as well and the airport extreme connection with the correct network name.
the model S/N of the airport extreme is SNH53340C3NW2  Not sure which number the model number is..
    So, I tried this....
I took  my laptop and airport express into the room where the wireless airport extreme modem is, and configured the airport express from there.  Now the express shows on both computers.  But,  when I click on the extreme icon, it still says that airpot utility does not support this base station.  Does this matter at all?  Seems to me the system is not recognizing the express.
    thanks for your input!

  • How can I create a WiFi LAN with AirPort ?

I saw somewhere a WiFi LAN (a PC with an external box) where I could put my own "Shared Folder" and see everyone's on the Lan shared data.
As far as I saw, with my included AirPort, I can't do the same, but this allows me to make an html server (computer to computer server, not LAN).
Am I wrong or must I buy an external box (please name it and explain why) ?
    TIA,
    Emile

I think part of the struggle here is in terminology. Don't take this the wrong way... after all I'm the one who is having trouble understanding the issue. These are hugely general definitions, but here goes:
WiFi just means wireless communication between '802.11' devices. Cell phone service, bluetooth, cordless phone sets, etc sometimes use the word WiFi, but that's just confusing... here we only mean wireless computer networking.
A LAN is a Local Area Network. In other words, two or more devices that talk using ethernet (even wirelessly) while geographically located very near to each other.
Airport is Apple's general brand name for all their 802.11 wireless networking devices. They did not invent the technology behind Airport, and thusly 'Airport' has all the same limits and power as it does for Windows and Linux. The term 'Airport' applies to wireless cards in Apple computers, Apple-brand Wireless Base Stations (other brands call theirs 'wireless access points' or 'wireless routers').
A server is just a computer that offers the transfer of data (like saved files, web pages, or email) to other devices.
Given all of that, I'm left wondering exactly what you meant in your post--what you are going for, specifically. You said you saw a WiFi LAN in the form of a PC with an external box. Did you perhaps see a Windows computer getting its network access from an external wireless device? If you were able to share files, that was all the doing of the Windows computer, with the WiFi device probably just transmitting the data between the computers. Later on you said that you are able to make an html server for computer to computer, but not LAN. I'm not sure what you mean.
In any case, let me just give you a run down of what you can do:
If you have a Mac with an Airport Card, you can join or create a wireless network:
--If you have an Airport Base Station, Airport Express, or third party Wireless Router, start here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh636.html
--Since you implied that you don't have any external networking devices though (a router, base station, access point, hub, or switch), you can still likely 'make due' as long as your Mac has an Airport Card. To get that internal card to allow direct wireless connections to your Mac from other computers, start here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=166640
Once you have all the computers talking to each other, you can share files, share an internet connection, or even host a website for the other computers from your Mac.
--If you want to read and write files stored on a Windows computer,
----turn on sharing in Windows: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304040
----then connect with the Mac: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106471
--If you want share your Mac's files with Windows computers, start here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107083
--If you want to share your files in other ways (as a website for their browsers, for example), start here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106660
--If you want to connect your Mac to a phone/dsl/cable modem and share that internet connection with the other computer(s), start here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh336.html
Finally, here's another page from Apple... kind of an overview of Windows/Mac network connections: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=19652
In the end, no, you probably don't need an external networking box, but it would make everything easier, faster and (in my experience) much more robust. I personally suggest a Linksys WRT54G, but that's just me: http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?childpagename=US%2FLayout&packedargs=c% 3DLProductC2%26cid%3D1127782957298&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper

  • How to create adhoc Wifi Hotspot with iPhone to connect Apple TV for Mirroring and Airplay?

I don't want to use my iPhone to share or tether my iPad or laptop etc. with my cellular data plan.
What I want is to create a hotspot with my iPhone (or iPad) so that I may connect my Apple TV to the adhoc network so I am able to stream video and music from my iPhone to the Apple TV.
I do presentations in front of live audiences and want the ability to mirror my iPad or use Airplay to stream video and photos to the Apple TV without connecting to a public WiFi network.
The apple TV is so small, I just tuck it into my bag with an HDMI cable and I am able to tap into LCD projectors and flat screens and use keynote or video from my iPad so my audiences can see my presentations.
Seems pretty simple. But I cannot activate a hot spot on my iPhone without signing up for AT&T's service. Fact is, I have no need to tether my iPhone or iPad, I just want to create an adhoc Wifi network solely for the use of my Apple TV.
I posted this question to the iPhone discussions as well, but thought someone here has wanted to do the same thing.
Someone suggested just bringing any WiFi router and connecting devices to that. But that's not a solution. It's about mobility and simplicity and not creating a larger footprint.
    Thoughts?

I am a presenter and I do what you want to do.  I use an apple tv as the presentation device that connects to the projector. The thing that makes it all work together is the Apple Airport Express $99 and looks just like the APple TV but white:  http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC414LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mg
Basically you define a wireless network ahead of time (using your iPad or iPhone and the Airport Config App) and let your iDevices connect to it and know the details ahead of time (so they will auto connect later).
You have a couple of options of connecting the airport express to the apple tv.  I basically stacked them and used an ethernet cable but you can define the wireless connection also.  I then strapped them to the projector (which I travel with) and used an HDMI cable from the apple TV to the projector.
Sometimes I present from my iPad...sometimes I present from my iPhone.  Sometimes I present from my iPad but use the remote app on the iPhone to see the next screen.  Now with Mountain Lion you could even present with a Macbook Pro (not needed though)
Wanna hear the coolest thing?  When I want to demo something on the iPad instead of just showing the screen remotely using Airplay I use an App on the iPhone called Air Camera directed down at my iPad screen.  The Air Camera sends the video to the Apple TV using Airplay and people are able to see my taps by seeing my fingers.
Another cool thing in a classroom setting with other iPads you are able to let people know your Wifi password and then display their iPad screen up on a projector to ask a question about something or demo something.
So for the extra $99 dolars for the Airport Express and a few minutes setting it up, wammo you have it!
One last note.  If you actually do have wired internet at the podium you can connect it to the WAN port of the Airport express and all your iDevices would in addition have internet access.  If you need internet access for all the devices and you are presenting in a place without internet then you have to bring a wireless hotspot in place of the airport express.  This works equally well (again just setup the connection from the iDevices to the wireless hotspot ahead of time)
    Have fun and good luck!
