How to create custom Easy Setups in Final Cut Express 4

I've been searching the web hours on end trying to find an answer to this question. Basically, here's the deal. I have a whole bunch of clips in 720p HD, at 60 fps with some other custom settings that aren't supported by Apple's default easy setups. I need a way to edit or create an easy setup to fit my needs for editing this type of video.
Thanks for any help,
Justin

JTK-
If you want to create your own easy setup configurations you will need Final Cut Pro (in Final Cut Studio).
FCE is designed to handle DV (NTSC or PAL) and Apple Intermediate Codec. (HDV and AVCHD are transcoded to Apple Intermediate Codec during capture.) Regarding high def video, FCE is designed to work with 720p30, 1080i50 and 1080i60.
Generally it's best to convert nonstandard video to QuickTime using one of the above codecs before importing the video into FCE.

  • How to kill custom Easy Setup / Sequence Presets?

I set up some experimental Sequence Presets and Easy Setups and now want to delete them. I have tried every recommendation that I could find (details below) but they still show up in the lists. Where on earth are these things stored??
    Here's what I've done:
    1. Repaired disk permissions
    2. In FCP, selected the Sequence Preset and pressed the Delete button.
    3. Exited Final Cut Pro.
    4. Trashed the preferences by deleting these files:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist
~/Library/Preferences/Final Cut Pro User Data/Final Cut Pro 6.0 Prefs
~/Library/Preferences/Final Cut Pro User Data/Final Cut Pro Obj Cache
~/Library/Preferences/Final Cut Pro User Data/Final Cut Pro Prof Cache
    5. Emptied the Trash
    6. Rebooted the computer.
    7. Started Final Cut Pro.
    8. The Presets/Setups are still there!! Tried to find them by name with Spotlight. Doesn't find anything. Tried to find them using the command-line Defaults program. Doesn't find anything. Looked in
/Applications/Final Cut Pro Additional Easy Setups
    They are not there.
I also have Final Cut Express installed and trashed all its preferences too for good measure. But my custom settings will just not die.
    All ideas welcome!

  • How to use You Tube clips in Final Cut Express?

I'm trying to use some You Tube clips in a Final Cut Express project - purely personal.
    What I'm doing is this:
    Play You Tube Video
Capture it as a Movie using ScreenSnapz Pro.
Saving it as a DV / NTSC quicktime movie - w/ 48 hz audio under Screensnapz options.
When I put it into the Final Cut Express timeline, it does not require rendering (I have loaded the DV/48hz sequence preset). But... the audio seems slower than it should be and the video is VERY much slower than it should be. The audio and video are not synched).
Other clips imported from other sources (such as video taken from a DVD using DVDxDV) is working fine.
    What am I missing here?

Don't use ScreenSnapz Pro, anything you get from that is not going to be as good quality as simply downloading it directly from the source.
    1. Use [MPEG Streamclip|http://www.squared5.com/|click here to download] to get the file from YouTube using its "Open URL (Cmd-U)" function.
    2. Export to Quicktime (Cmd-E) using these settings:
    Compression: Apple DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    Frame Size: 720x480
    Frame Rate: 29.97
    Quality: 100%
    Sound: Uncompressed Stereo 48kHz
Use a DV-NTSC sequence within FCE.

  • How is MacBook Pro working with Appleworks, Final Cut Express, etc?

    Hi,
Many thanks in advance for your attention.
I've heard Applications in iLife work with MacBook Pro great.
    Anyone have any problems with
    1. Appleworks?
    2. Final Cut Express?
    3. Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac?
Anything else about this new system one should look out for, be aware of?
    - Ross

    Ross,
I can only respond regarding Office 2004. So far, Entourage works great and I've had no problems. Same with Word. PowerPoint is a little slow, but it was on my PB too. I hardly ever use Excel, but, I am sent Excel files all day long and opening them and getting around them seems to have no issues.
In general, I think that Office will be better as a Universal App (whenever?) but it is "okay" now.

  • How do I record video straight into final cut express?

I'm pretty new to the video editing world, and I can't figure out how to run my camera straight into express to record, if that is even possible. The camera is a panasonic AVCCAM, and its the model AG-HMC40P. It has a usb 2.0 mini out and a hdmi out, but I don't know how to run those into my computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

This is an AVCHD camcorder.  FCE can capture video recorded by this camcorder, but you cannot just connect the camcorder to your Mac and capture "live" video from the camcorder.
To capture/ingest recorded AVCHD video, in FCE select one of the AVCHD Easy Setups that matches how you shot your video, then connect the camcorder to your Mac via USB, then in FCE use the Log & Transfer function to ingest the video from the camcorder.
If you really  need to capture live video, you will need to use either a miniDV camcorder ... or use an analog-digital converter to which you would connect the analog output of your camcorder and also the Firewire port on your Mac. The Canopus ADVC-110 or ADVC-300 are examples of good quality converters.
Notes:  Your camcorder appears to have an ordinary a/v out in addition to HDMI and Component.  You could use the a/v out with the converter.  The analog-digital converter will convert the analog output of your camcorder to DV over FireWire.  Both methods, of course, will only give you standard-def 4:3 video.  In FCE you would select the DV-NTSC DV Converter easy setup and use the Capture Now function to capture the video/audio.

Then use this technique, but create a gradient that has black squares in multiple locations, then transitions to gray around them and eventually to white. The gradient wipe simply starts at the darker parts of the image in the well, and then goes from these to the ones inbetween (gray) and then finally to white. Experimenting with different color mattes using this technique would work because the way it transitions is simply based on the luminance of the clip in the well.

  • How to import a dvd file on final cut express

I don't have a camcorder. The footage I want to work on is on a dvd. Is it possible to import it and if yes how? When I open the DVD on my desktop, I have two folder. One audio and one video. The files extension in the video folder are .bup .ifo .vob. Is it possible to convert the files without loosing quality?
    What do you suggest ?
    Many thanks

Search would give you lots of results for this
Basically you need to encode the DVD's MPEG2 file to a format FCE understands, like DV/HDV
You can use software like MPEG Streamclip or DVxDVD to do this

  • Panasonic P2HD how do i get the video into Final Cut Express.

I have a Panasonic P2HD video camrea how do i get the video into FCE.

You can't. FCE doesn't support DVCPRO HD. You'd have to convert it to the Apple Intermedia Codec in some other sofware. FCE also probably doesn't support the frame resolution the P2 media is using.

  • How do you import mpeg2 files into final cut express?

I have recently show my sons christening, and relied on a friend to do ths shooting. One of the tapes unfortunatley has broken, and I have had a second party transfer this footage onto DVD for me. He is also sending the footage through as an MPEG 2 file. Is there anything I can do with this using FCPE?

Convert the DVD's VOB files into a format that works natively in FCE.  For DVD footage (which is SD), use MPEG Streamclip to do the converting.  Here's a tutorial on using MPEG Streamclip: http://www.secondchairvideo.com/?p=739
MPEG Streamclip is freeware, but you may need to purchase the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component from Apple if you don't have it already.

  • Final Cut Express v3.5 HD - Setup/Config. Tips

    Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for some assistance regarding the setup of Final Cut Express HD v3.5. on my system I have downloaded the Apple "on-line" FCE documentation, but I thought I would try gaining some "real-life" insight about installing and cofiguring FCE from this discussion board, as I'm new to Final Cut Express. I have used other NLEs (Pinnacle, Avid, etc.) so I'm familiar with a few editors, in general.
My system is: iMac 2.8 Ghz Extreme with 4GB memory and a 500GB internal disk. I have (1) LaCie 250GB External drive via 1394 Firewire (my video ingest drive) and (1) Western Digital 500GB USB External Disk used for content (video, images, graphics, Digital Juice, etc.). Lastly, I have an old MovieBox Deluxe (Video Capture/Convertor) via 1394 port. I doubt it will work with the iMac, as it is proprietary Avid/Pinnacle hardware.
I was going to use my 500GB external drive as my "scratch" drive and leave everything else alone for now. The iMac will be a standalone video editing system...no other software loaded on it, except what comes loaded as the standard (OS X 10.4.10, iLife, Safari, etc.)
My hope is to leave the internal drive (loaded with FCE) alone. Should I save my FCE projects to the internal drive? or save to an external?
Is this how I should setup the drives, etc.? Or do something different?
I really appreciate your advice and help, as I'm a "newby" to the discussions boards. I finally got tired of doing everything with a WinTel box. I saw the light!
    Thanks for your assistance!

    Hi Everyone!
Regarding setup and config of FCE, I've been reading several discussions about scratch drives. While I plan to use one of my external drives as the scratch drive and the other as my video ingest drive, should I SAVE my projects to the internal 300GB drive which FCE resides? or should I SAVE projects to a different drive?
I'm trying my best to setup my iMac so FCE and the drive it resides on is the LEAST disturbed (with other content or files) to prevent fragmentation. So my media content (i.e. Digital Juice) is on a seperate drive, video ingest, yet, on another seperate drive, etc., etc. Without beating the horse, what is the BEST way to setup my iMac? I guess I've been reading too many horror-stories about scratch drives, conflicts, etc.
After reading several messges, I notice many discussions about still photo images (with/without transitions) becoming "jittery" upon render completion in FCE and FCP/Studio? Are still images a problem for FCE 3.5? or are these sporadic, based on a mac users configuration and what is being accomplished?
Lastly, what are the necessary utilities (convertors, etc.) to purchase in support of editing with FCE? I see lots of utilities recommended for various things and I want to make sure I get the best utilities.
    Thanks!
