How to create ebook chapter cross-references with inDesign CS6?

Hi, I'm creating a fairly technical ebook, and would like the reader to be able to easily link "See Chapter X for more information" with Chapter X. My problem is that all the "See Chapter X for more information" phrases are set up as a character style... it doesn't seem that I can easily cross-reference because I didn't set these phrases up using paragraph styles (which doesn't make much sense to me as each cross-reference would need to be a new paragraph).
I think I just need to anchor the "See Chapter X for more information," phrases, but that isn't proving to be easy to position, the text anchor boxes are showing up in crazy places... having a hard time figuring out how to position anchored text.
Can anyone help?

Hi Conrad,
I'm running CS 5.5 so can't be sure of the differences with your version.
The problem here is simply one of ID terminology.
I suspect what you want to do is this:
1. Select your destination text with the type tool. The destination text is what you want the reference to link to. Then, in the Hyperlinks control menu menu, choose "New Hyperlink Destination" and give it a simple and unique name.
2. Find the text that you want to connect to the destination text. Select it and in the same control panel choose "New Hyperlink..." You'll have the choice of selecting from (what will ultimately be) a number of text anchors.
I hope that makes sense. I quickly checked to see if ID exports a working cross-reference in EPUB and it does, although I didn't have time to examine the HTML.

This is Sean Smith. Marilou who wrote the original post works for me. Bob if you could point us in the direction of details you need I’ll ensure we provide the additional information as soon as possible.
M tells me she pretty much doing exactly what Steve's article suggests.
The concern is what a remarkably cumbersome process this appears to be.
Even though I believe her explanation entirely I find the problem to be highly disconcerting as it’s wasting an immense amount of valuable time and inhibiting the production process significantly.
She is producing wonderful results but via an immensely painstaking process fraught with potential for error. Each page link has to be manually linked to the next by number. It’s entirely possible to make a mistake and link to the incorrect page thus missing pages.
If she inserts a new page – guess what? All the pages links have to changed manually and double checked yet again.
If she makes a ‘Contents’ section as we do and exports the InDesign file as an interactive PDF all the contents items and links are missing and are therefore blank.
She then has to export the document as a plain PDF and do the job again in Acrobat.
For an extravagantly wealthy company with such extraordinarily expensive software I find this to be entirely incredulous.
Who is the Product Manager for InDesign?
Are they aware of this issue?
What are they doing about it and when will it be done?
Just curious are you guys paid employees or volunteers as this appears to be an official forum and we are new here?
Digital publishing of PDF magazines appears to be an explosive growth market especially for platforms such as the iPad but this primary product for the task appears to be inadequate or ill-conceived.
Is DPS a possible solution or is this more for Apps than PDF production?

How to create a Finish Schedule List with InDesign?

We create Room x Room selection catalogs with images and brief descriptions for architectural & Interior design projectsl. How can I export the text description into a Finish Schedule list(spreadsheet) for contractors to order materials from this indesign catalog.

Give the Text Decsription a unique Paragraph Style name.
Then use the Layout>Table of Contents
And only select the Unique Paragraph Style name to generate a separate table of contents.
Export that text as a .txt file.
Open it Excel

InDesign Cross References with DTP's Cross References PRO

There are already posts all over the forum about how inter-document cross references in InDesign are "fragile" and slow and can cause crashing, which I recently learned the hard way. We tried to live with the slowness and the breaking links, but the show-stopper was that we couldn't export our largest book without InDesign crashing. (The book contains 150+ individual documents.)
Based on some recommendations, we are now using a trial of DTP's Cross References PRO plug-in for InDesign. I removed all cross references that were created using InDesign's native cross references, and added several new ones using the plug-in. The slowness has gone away and the cross references don't seem to be breaking anymore, but InDesign still crashes when I try to export our book. DTP's support people insist that their plug-in should be able to handle large books, unlike InDesign. (And I've heard very good things about their support.) Is it possible that our files and/or book are corrupted from when we had the native InDesign cross references? Has anyone switched from native InDesign cross references to DTP cross references?

I don't think it's been determined if you have the latest ID update for your version of ID? BTW, which version are you using?
Where is the "too many files open" message coming from? Operating System (which?) ID? What's the exact message? A screen shot would help. Back in the days of DOS and early Windows, there were commands to set the number of permitted files open at once. Not sure how to do it in modern OSs. If it's an ID message, perhaps someone's got a suggestion.
Some folks on the forum like to see crash files so they can try to analyze them. Search Google for terms like "adobe forum indesign pastebin" without quotes to find some of those postings and learn how to send your crash report files there, and look at the names of those who volunteer to analyze the files.
I was thinking that two book container files that hold the same total number of files in the original single book might lighten the processing load and perhaps avoid a crash. With some work, I think it's possible to get the pagination and other numbering schemes, and x-refs to emulate a single book. I think that this is different from exporting half the files from one book, then the other half. It's not tested, just a thought. One other thought is to remove one file at a time from the book, starting at either the beginning or end, and export, until you find the maximum number of files that succeed consistently. Then try from the other end, to see if the crash happens with the same number of files, or perhaps same number of pages, or even, perhaps, at the same page. Perhaps the number of cross-references in the content is related to the crash. Again, just brainstorming.
You might explore with DTPTools support whether they'd want to see your crash files, to determine if the problem traces to their plug-in. Also, perhaps they'd like to look at your whole project - if it's permissable with your company or client, to see if DTPTools' techs can reproduce the crash.

Preserving Chapter Cross References when going to Structured Framemaker

Hello,
I am trying to preserve all of my cross references that link from chapter to chapter, within the same book. If I convert files one at a time, then FrameMaker has trouble finding the link in the destination chapter - because that chapter has not yet been converted to Structured FrameMaker.
I have not tried Batch Processing, but I am sure I would get the same results.
With that said, what must I do to these external chapter cross references, so that they convert over to Structured FrameMaker?

Like Russ, I have had to redirect the cross-references manually following conversion; HOWEVER, I have also noticed that existing IDs in the unstructured version seem to get put into the converted element as an attribute. In other words, if my EDD defines a Title element with an Id attribute and the unstructured document contains a title paragraph that is the target of a cross-reference, then upon conversion the corresponding Title element has TWO attributes, one is named Id and the other ID. Id has no value, but ID does. The structured document does not validate and I have to delete the ID attribute to make it validate.
This leads me to believe that had I named the attribute ID in my EDD, then it would be assigned a value upon conversion; however, I have never tried this. If I had, FrameMaker would likely create the Title element with two attributes, both named ID!!!

How can I set a cross reference to a Picture

Hello,
I have a question regarding the new function: How can I set a cross reference (dont know the exact english name since I use the German version; in German: Querverweis) in Indesign CS4 to a picture? So far, I could only do it with a kind of workaround by putting an invisible text frame above or below the picture and referencing to that one.
Any suggestions?

For creating cross-references between chapters, open the chapter documents and insert cross-references as is done for any normal document using menu command "Special->Cross-Reference".
For updating all cross-references throughout the book, you can use the menu command "Edit->Update Book".

insert into notes (project_id, note, notes_month, notes_year) So, p3_note_id is NULL.
Another option is that you have a trigger on table NOTES that generates a new note_id even for an update.

Hi Oktay -
This function works in my BPC70NW SP02 system. Your issue might be that you are trying to access a TIME member that does not exist. Please make sure the offset value is a valid dimension member.
I can confirm that EVTIM does allow the offset for base members (such as 2009.MAY) as well as parent nodes (such as 2009.Q1 or 2008.TOTAL)... BUT...the offset result of the EVTIM function needs to be a valid dimension member!

A program loads a report in runtime updates list of database fields (possibly includes sample data), open report in "Crystal Reports 2011" (or 2008) where user customizes report and saves it. Later on the program loads the report, fills actualized data and displays it in .net report viewer.
What I do:

What are the problems
The report is open in preview mode (not in design).
When the field is added to the report the designer asks for XML datasource on preview.

I splitted your question above in another thread in order not to have a huge thread with many topics in it.
That being said, I'm not sure to understand. A view is just a manner to display MS Project data with columns. A view can have a table with column (left part) associated with a Gantt chart. It can also just contain a table with no Gantt chart (like the task
table) or a table with a timephased grid (resource and task usage).
Please give us more information, maybe with a concrete example so we can help you.

Hi,
Tou can use Table inside table to show the details this way but I'm not sure about Expand/Collapse.
Expand/Collapse are part of HGRID.
I think we can develop this functionality with little manipulation.
