How to create second database at ASM in 4 node RAC system

Hi Experts,
we use 4 nodes RAC (11.0.1) with 10.2.0. 4 database in red hat5.0
we want to add second database at ASM in RAC system based on manager decision.
how do I add second database in ASM with exist database?
Do I need to created new ASM insatnce?
how to create two new diskgroup? is it under existing ASM instance or new ASM instance?
how to reset ASM properity to support ( or new) ASM instance and two database?
Do I need to configure AMS again after added more space into ASM?
I could not find ducument that add seconf database into ASM in RAC system.
I want add second database by dbca. any experience for add second database in ASM RAC ?
Thanks for help!
JIm

Hi... I'm in the same situation.
I need to add a new second database on a RAC installation based on already available ASM instance.
I'm using 11gR2.
I read your suggested documentation. Then I typed asmca and analyzed my asm configuration:
As you can see I have a DISK GROUP NAME with several FREE space.
If I select Volumes tab the following is my current configuration:
Selecting Create button, I can insert some values as you can see:
First question:
Is this the right way to create space for a new database ? Consider that running dbca.. no DISK GROUP NAME is available.
Second question:
When I created my first database on this DISK GROUP NAME no volumes were created. Why now I have to do it ? Is this necessary to really separate datafiles coming from different databases ?

  • How to create second DATABASE

    Hi Experts,
We have 4 nodes oracle 11.1 RAC with oracle 10g2 DATABASE with ASM in redhat5.1.
the system is not more file system
now my boss want to add additional file system and ask me to create new database in RAC.
My question is which is best to create new database?
    1) create second database under existing oracle server.
in these way, which bad effection is for existing DB that support a heavy data loading, GIS application and stream (data replication)
How to configure new ASM for new database? are there two ASM instance in system?
    or
    2) install new oracle in new directory. configure new ASM and create new database as ASM in new directory.
In this case, it seems that two DB is total separately without touch each other.
    I do not have idea.
Please advice me your experience for RAC to handle two or more database and any tips.

    Why?
This is not how RAC scales. RAC scales by adding more servers to the cluster, thereby increasing the processing capacity of the cluster. RAC does not scale by adding more instances to a server node.
You want to pay once for the overheads of a database instance. You want to have a single large SGA for the instance to use - as it is better than having 2 smaller SGAs for 2 instances. You want pay, in bytes, once for a system tablespace, temp tablespace, undo tablespace and redo/undo logs. You want to pay once in memory and CPU for a set of system processes for that instance - a database writer, log writer, system and process monitors, etc.
It does not make sense to pay twice for any of these. 2 system monitor processes are not somehow better than one. 2 smaller SGA are not better than 1 large SGA. 2 sets of ASM instances do not provide a better service than a single ASM instance.
My question is which is best to create new database?Create a logical database - within Oracle that means you create a new schema. That schema is a logical database. It can have its own tablespaces. It can have its own resource profile. t can even have its own temp space, etc.
    1) create second database under existing oracle server.Correct - this is what I refer to as a schema.
in these way, which bad effection is for existing DB that support a heavy data loading, GIS application and stream (data replication)
How to configure new ASM for new database? are there two ASM instance in system?Single ASM instance.
    or
    2) install new oracle in new directory. configure new ASM and create new database as ASM in new directory.
In this case, it seems that two DB is total separately without touch each other.No. As this is exactly how one does not scale Oracle. Remember that if you want a 2nd set of instances, you need to use existing memory and CPU top pay for the overheads of that.. which means you will be taking away from the existing instance. Why turn the existing instance into something less than what it was before in order to create another (also inferior) instance?
No, it is better to add to the existing instance instead... rather add a logical database to it. Rather add more space, more memory, more RAC nodes to it.. as that is how Oracle RAC scales.

  • How to add a second database along with existing two node RAC environment

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can help me with this.
    My Environment:
    1. Two node RAC Cluster database (11.2.0.2) with ASM running perfectly (Oracle Sid = test-1)
    2. I have installed a second single instance db on node 2 (Oracle Sid = test-2) with NTFS file system for datafiles
    3. Database is up and running, but I am not able to connect it from any client.
    4. I am getting ORA-12514:  TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
    5. Database (test2) is registered with grid LISTENER
    5. TNSPING from client machine response is ok
Am I missing something here, happy to provide more info if requested.

  • How to open the second VM in Oracle 11gR2 2-nodes RAC system ?

    Folks,
Hello. I have been installing Oracle Database 11gR2 RAC system using 2 nodes that are 2 Virtual Machines (rac1 and rac2) on the top of VMPLayer 3.
I follow the tutorial http://appsdbaworkshop.blogspot.com/2011/10/11gr2-rac-on-linux-56-using-vmware.html to do.
The original Virtual Machine rac1 has run correctly. I configure rac1 network (eth0 and eth1) by opening VM rac1 and using command "[root@rac1\] #neat" as root user to invoke the network configuration.
For the second Virtual Machine rac2, I simply copy all files in "C:\VM\rac1" into "C:\VM\rac2". Then I have done the following:
    1) In the directory "C:\VM\rac2", rename "rac1.vmx" to "rac2.vmx".
    2) Change display name from "rac1" to "rac2" in the file "rac2.vmx".
The next thing to do for rac2 is to open the Virtual Machine rac2 and configure its network (eth0 and eth1) by using the command "[root@rac2\]#neat" as root user.
But by this step, I don't understand how to open the Virtual Machine rac2 so that can configure its network (eth0 and eth1).
Can any folk tell me how to open the VM rac2 to configure its network by this step ?

    Hi,
But by this step, I don't understand how to open the Virtual Machine rac2 so that can configure its network (eth0 and eth1)."rac2" is a new virtual machine after you copied and changed the display name and you need to add this in the vmware enventory (I am talking about vmware server and vmware player should have the same way as it is supposed to run multiple vritual machines on your PC). Then it will be visible it to you. Now start this new machine and edit the network configuration.

  • How to create first database

    Hi there,
This is my first post on this forum. I am totaly new to Oracle as I am working on one project which require Oracle as db.
I have installed Oracle Database 10g Express Edition. I can login by system user or as hr. Now when I am trying to create database instance for my project.net application, I am not finding the option to create the db. Its manual (even here in forum someone) pointed about Configuration and Migration Tool menu under Start/Oracle. But I don't have that option under my oracle. What I have is Start > Oracle Database 10g Express Edition > 1) Help 2) Backup Database 3) Get Started 4) Go to Homepage 5) Start SQL command line 6) Start Db etc...
Can anyone guide me how to create first database? Thanks in adv and your answer will really be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Yatrik

I think I didn't explain properly. I can connect. I have got two database users as well. The one is default hr and second I just created as yatrik.
By saying how to create database, I want to accomplish this below procedure.
Run the Oracle Database Configuration Assistant located in the Windows Start/Oracle/Configuration and Migration Tools menu to create a database instance for the Project.net application. 1. Select Create a Database the click Next.
    2. Choose the General Purpose database template.
    3. Note the Global Database Name and SID that you use.
    4. Choose your preferred management method. If unsure, chose the default.
    5. Note the password(s) you use for the various accounts.
    6. Select the appropriate storage mechanism for your installation. Again, if unsure, chose the default.
    7. Specify the storage location.
    8. And Recovery Configuration.
    9. Do not install the Sample Schemas.
    10. Select the remaining options, as appropriate to your installation, and create the database. Here when I go to Start > Oracle Database 10g Express Edition, I don't get Configuration and Migration Tools Menu anywhere. The above steps says how to create it but I can't find that tool menu.
I know how to create tables and all such but I am looking for that particular option where I can complete the above steps.
I hope I have explained more briefly to understand what I am trying to do.

  • How to create a database for sample code from Tutorial/Book?

I want to try out the sample code from [http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920013471.do] for the book SQL Pocket Guide 3rd Ed.
I have downloaded the oracle vm/appliance for oracle 11g2 and I have started sqlplus as sysdba.
I'm feeling overwhelmed with these links describing how to create a database:
    (1) What is the command to list the existing databases?
    (2) What is the command to delete an existing database?
    (3) When creating a new database with the create database command, is it necessary to specify the logfile, character set, national character set, datafile, sysaux datafile, undo tablespace, temp table space? Do these have reasonable defaults? I'm not sure what proper directories are to specify for Linux and the examples are for windows.
Can someone give me a simplified create database command to create a database called 3rdEdPocketGuide? Should I follow the example at [http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Oracle-7-HOWTO-3.html] and instead of orcl use 3rdEdPocketGuide?
    (4) What command do I use to execute the script that comes with the book SQL Pocket Guide 3rd Ed? This is the script that has all the drop table, create table and insert commands in it.
    (5) What command do I use in sqlplus to set the current default database prior to running this script? Perhaps this is the connect command? I don't want my script to create tables in the system database.
    (6) I tried the command "connect 3rdEdPocketGuide" and it prompted for a password! Yikes! What password? Do I need to specify a password when I create a database? I cannot tell if I have successfully created such a database or it is just prompting me for a password to thwart malicious users. Is it is possible to create databases which don't require a password or maybe a zero length password?
    Thanks
    Siegfried

    Everyone:
Do I need to create a user using SQL*Plus first so I can login with "Oracle SQL Developer" so I create my database called? What would be the "create user" command I would execute?
OK, so I run sqlplus and issue these commands
    create user siegfried identified by abc ;
    grant connect to siegfried ;
    connect siegfried/abc;
Now, how do I create a database? In Microsoft SQL Server one has to create a database first and if you just start creating tables without creating a database first, the tables will be created in the system database and this is usually undesirable.
Sometimes a database is known in the java connection string as the catalog. Is there any such analog in oracle SQL plus?
So now what do I do? I want to create a bunch of tables using my script I downloaded from 3rd Ed SQL Pocket Guide. Does my new user "siegfried" have the right to create tables? I guess I could try but I don't want to create tables in the system database.
I noticed I can also use "Oracle SQL Developer" to connect with my new "siegfried" account. It seems that I should have been able to connect with sysdba... strange.

Learning how to look things up in the documentation is time well spent investing in your career.  To that end, you should drop everything else you are doing and do the following:
    Go to  docs.oracle.com.
Locate the link for your Oracle product and version, and click on it.
You are now at the entire documentation set for your selected Oracle product and version.
    BOOKMARK THAT LOCATION
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what is available here. Take special note of the "books" and "search" tabs. Under the "books" tab (for 10.x) or the "Master Book List" link (for 11.x) you will find the complete documentation library.
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what kind of documentation is available there by simply browsing the titles under the "Books" tab.
Open the Reference Manual and spend a few minutes looking through the table of contents to get familiar with what kind of information is available there.
Do the same with the SQL Reference Manual.
Do the same with the Utilities manual.
You don't have to read the above in depth.  They are reference manuals.  Just get familiar with what is there to be referenced. Ninety percent of the questions asked on this forum can be answered in less than 5 minutes by simply searching one of the above manuals.
Then set yourself a plan to dig deeper.
    - *Read a chapter a day from the Concepts Manual*.
    - Take a look in your alert log.  One of the first things listed at startup is the initialization parms with non-default values. Read up on each one of them (listed in your alert log) in the Reference Manual.
    - Take a look at your listener.ora, tnsnames.ora, and sqlnet.ora files. Go to the Network Administrators manual and read up on everything you see in those files.
    - *When you have finished reading the Concepts Manual, do it again*.

    Hi..,
Once you have created a menu bar, you enter the individual menu entries. Each menu can contain up to 15 entries.
A menu can contain any of the following:
Function names (with function code and text)
    Submenus (pull-down menus)
    Separators
You may include submenus up to three levels deep.
Menu functions that logically belong together are grouped together using separators. This makes the menu easier to use. Separators also make long menus easier to read by dividing them into smaller parts.
    Defining Menu Functions
To add functions to a menu that is already open in the Menu Painter:
Open a menu list in the menu bar by double-clicking the menu title.
The system opens the menu. The menu entries list contains the two columns Code and Text.
In the Code column, enter a function code (this may be up to 20 characters long).
If you want to enter a function code that is longer than the input field, you must first change the displayed length of the field in the user settings. (Choose Utilities ® Settings ® User-specific.)
Enter the function text in the Text column.
The name you enter here appears in the menu at runtime. You can also determine the contents of function texts at runtime (see Defining Dynamic Function Texts).
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each item in the menu.
    Creating Cascading Menus
To add a cascading menu (sub-menu) to a menu:
    Leave the Code column blank.
Enter a menu name in the Text column.
Double-click the cascading menu to open it.
The system opens the menu entry list for the cascading menu.
Complete the menu as you would any other.
    Inserting Separators
Place the cursor on a line.
Choose Edit ® Insert ® Separator.
If you want to insert a separator between two existing menu entries, place the cursor on the line before which you want to insert the separator.
    Editing Menu Entries
You can cut, copy, paste, and delete menu entries.
Place the cursor on a line.
Choose Edit ® Entry ® Cut (or Copy, or Paste, or Delete).
If you double-click a function code, the Function Attributes dialog box appears. Here you can, for example, change the icon assigned to a function.

  • How to CREATE a DATABASE with ORACLE?

    Hello
Can somebody please just tell me, how do i create a Database with Oracle 10g(Express Edition)? I find it very disturbing that not in one of the dozen Orcale books i have, they explain to you on how to create a DATABASE. They begin with how to create Table, can a table exist without a database?
I have tried the command line, but it tells me im not connected or some kind of error. I have tried SQL Commands and then it gives me this Error:*ORA-01501: CREATE DATABASE failed*
    ORA-01100: database already mounted
How come Oracle dont have just a simple button:CREATE DATABASE?
    Somebody please help!
