  • How to create standby controlfile from restored backup

    Hi Techies,
    I am re-building one of my DR server, Source and target DB is oracle 10g.
    I have taken the source backup which is going to be restored on target, But I forgot to take a standby controlfile from source DB at the time (Pre/Post) backup.
    Now the issue is I can create a standby controlfile on primary and copy the same to target, But so many datafiles are added after the backup which I have taken to restore and medias are already shipped.
    I can send the other set of backup to DR site, but it takes a week time and I don't want to do that If I can regenerate it.
    So any clue to create standby controlfile on target with restored datafiles?
    Regards,
    Nick Loy

    Hmm... sounds like you perform this in a rather manual fashion...
    Do you use RMAN for taking the backups?
    Or maybe the BR*TOOLS?
    With these tools you are usually safe from such mistakes - I can only recommend to use them!
    However, since you don't have a control file at all on the target side, the only thing left to do would be to
    ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE NORESETLOGS;
    on the primary side and manually remove the files that have been added since you took the backup from the control file script,
    Afterwards you use the script on the standby side to create the control files.

    Lars

    Hi,
    How to create a standby redolog from rac to non rac DR setup..???

    Thanks Shivanandha,
    (maximum number of logfiles for each thread + 1) * maximum number of threads
    Using this equation reduces the likelihood that the primary instance's log writer (LGWR) process will be blocked because a standby redo log file cannot be allocated on the standby database. For example, if the primary database has 2 log files for each thread and 2 threads, then 6 standby redo log file groups are needed on the standby database.In maximum performance mode you can keep same number of redo logs but having one more redo log member for each thread is recommended and mandtory for other protection modes.

    Yes, even your DR is RAC or non-RAC, you must have both threads, because each instance information exist on own thread, So to perform redo transition from both the instances, you must have both standby redo log threads even though if it is non an RAC DR.
    Hope This helps.

    The Oracle Solaris Cluster concepts guide has some information on which zone model to choose:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E18728_01/html/821-2682/gcbkf.html#scrolltoc
    When managing a Solaris zone with the HA Zones agent, the cluster basically regards the non-global zone as a blackbox.
    As such you can either start the Oracle database as part of the runlevel/SMF startup of the non-global zone, or you can use the sczsh or sczsmf component and use your own scripts to start, probe and stop the Oracle database.
    Usage of the standard HA Oracle data service is not supported in combination with the HA Zones agent.
    If you require a more fine grained control of services running in non-global zones, why not setup a zone cluster and then having HA Oracle failover the Oracle database between non-global zones?

  • How to create temp files in temp tablespace

    Dear all,
    Due to outage of our SAN, we our out of production for the
    last 3 days. By the grace of Almighty we have restored production by
    database recovery from our standby backup. Since temp tablespace and
    temp data files do not taken as backup for standby, now after recovery
    we are getting abap dumps asking for temp_1 and temp_2 datafiles.
    Please guide us how to create temp files. v$tablespace is showing tablespace PSAPTEMP but datafile are not there
    Abap dumps are giving these errors as mentioned below
    ====================================================
    The exception must either be prevented, caught within the procedure
    "DATA_SELECTION"
    "(FORM)", or declared in the procedure's RAISING clause.
    To prevent the exception, note the following:
    Database error text........: "ORA-01157: cannot identify/lock data file 256 -
    see DBWR trace file#ORA-01110: data file 256:

    ===================================================
    another one asking for
    '/oracle/SD1/sapdata3/temp_1/temp.data1'"
    Best Regards
    Waqas

    if you want to add a new tempfile to your TEMP Tablespace,you can do like that.
    <i>ALTER TABLESPACE</i> <<b><u>name of TEMP Tablespace</u></b>> ADD TEMPFILE <<b><u><b><u>pfad to the file_and_file name</u></b></u></b>> <b>SIZE</b> <size>;
    You can use also the options <i>REUS</i>E <i>autoextend off</i> or <i>on</i> .
    e.g:
    <i>alter tablespace</i> <u><b>PSAPTEMP</b></u> add <i>tempfile</i> <b><u>'/oracle/SD1/sapdata4/temp_2/temp.data2'</u></b> <i>SIZE 1000K</i> <i>REUSE</i>;
    The directory <b><u>temp_2</u></b> should exist.
    Or you can use the BR*Tools to create a new datafile. Enter brtools and follow the instructions or menu.
    More to TEMP Tablespaces see please following SAP notes:
    <u><b>659946</b></u> - FAQ: Temporary tablespaces
    <u><b>600513</b></u> - ORA-25153 after recovery due to missing tempfiles
    and the Oracle Note:
    <u><b>160426.1</b></u>: TEMPORARY Tablespaces : Tempfiles or Datafiles ?
    I hope it helps.

    Hi Yasir!
    If you  have all archived log, and control file backups.
    Then you  must follow this steps
    1. Restore Standby control file;
    2. Copy archived logs to  a folder (/tmp/arch) or FRA
    3. RMAN>alter database mount;
    RMAN> catalog start  with '/tmp/arch'; (or FRA)
    RMAN must be cataloged all  archived logs;
    4. Start redo  apply process for apply archived log;
    5. If All archived logs applied, then you  can  perform failover to standby database.
    It means Standby database role will change  to Primary.
    Do you want this?

  • Creating standby database

    Hi
    I want create standby database in Oracle 10g.
    I can create standart database by using database configuration assistant.
    How can I create standby database in Oracle 10g?

    Hi,
    Standby databases, in a nutshell, acts as a failover for our mission critical production databases. When production database crashes, applications can quickly switchover to the stand by databases.
    What type of Standy you are willing to go for ??
    Physical Standby Database
    Standby database is called “physical” if the physical structure of stand by exactly matches with stand by structure. Archived redo log transferred from primary database will be directly applied to the stand by database.
    Logical Standby Database
    Stand by database is called “logical”, the physical structure of both
    databases do not match and from the archived redo log we create SQL statements then these statements will be applied to stand by database.
    Follow this link for creating standby database

    The two database have the same SID,use SQL*Plus it can access each other.
    My operating steps as below:
    1.on primary server:
    1)connect internal;
    2)shutdown immediate;
    3)copy all datafiles(*.DBF) to a backup directory;
    4)startup
    5)alter database create standby controlfile as 'd:\oracle\ora81\ILLDB\standby.ctl'
    6)alter system archive log current
    2.on standby server:
    1)copy all backuped datafile,standby.ctl,all redo log files from primary server to standby server,overwrite all same name files;
    2)modify the init.ora,add this parameter:
    "standby_archive_dest = "location=D:\Oracle\oradata\ILLDB\archive" ";
    3)statup oracle service in Service control manel;
    4)run svrmgrl.exe;
    5)startup nomount;
    6)alter database mount standby database;

    I don't know which step is mistake.Please tell me correct steps.

    I did face the similar problem while trying to create and startup a clone database for Point in Time Recovery (PITR). The error message is
    ORA-01696 controlfile is not a clone controlfile
    Are you folks have any idea how do I resolve this problem?? Is there any way to create clone control file??
