How to crop an image on a layer?

I am using PSE 6 for Mac. I have dragged an image onto a canvas with three layers. When I crop the image using either the crop tool or a selection>image≥crop, it crops the entire canvas, rather than just the image on the layer. Can this be done?
Related question: I dragged an image onto the canvas and wanted to scale it up. I grabbed it with the move tool and dragged the corner box, holding the shift key to constrain proportion. But it does not constrain with the shift key. Am I doing it wrong?
Thanks.

To just crop a layer, you need to use the rectangular marquee tool to select where the layer is to be cropped then invert the selection and press the delete key. (Shortcut for Selection<Inverse = I believe on Mac it's Command + Shift + I...on PC it's Ctrl + Shift + I).
This did not work for me. I got an error message that "the Smart Object is not directly editable."

You need to use the transform command not the move tool. Shortcut Edit<Free Transform = I believe on Mac it's Command + T...on PC it's Ctrl T.
Yes, hold in the shift key to constrain it to scale. If you want it to scale to the center instead of to one of the corners, hold in the Shift + Option key (I believe it's Option on the Mac...On PC it's Shift + Alt.) Alternately, you can set the width (either by using transform handles or by inputting numbers in the width box) then click the chain between width and height in the options bar to make the height match the width.
I have stumbled onto the solution: if I DON'T hold down the shift key while dragging, proportions are constrained. If I DO hold down the shift key, proportions are NOT constrained. This seems to be the opposite of what I remember, but it works.
Thanks.

  • Photoshop Elements 13 how to open an image as a layer?

Hello, I recently received as asked Photoshop Elements 13 for Christmas, and have been using Gimp for about a year now as a substitute. However, when I went to start a project, I couldnt figure out how to open an image as a layer. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Heres an example with 2 images. I want to get the image you see in this picture, and place it in the original image as a layer, not a separate project.

To edit pixel you should use Photoshop. There are workarounds to crop pixel images in Illy, but all demand that you embed the image. Then it gets converted into the document's color space, which might not be desired. So do your pixel editing in Photoshop.

  • How to crop an image in Page?

How can I ACTUALLY crop an image in Pages to the size of the mask? Reducing image size des not work, it reduces the size of all images by reducing the quality. It does not in fact cut images to the mask shape. Any ideas?

When using the mask you get the images put behind the mask. You can change the size of the mask if you like to get the part of the image you want showing. That is the masks behavior.
If you really want to crop the image first you have to use another application for the cropping. There are many out on the net that you can try.
Download the Pages User Guide from your Pages Help menu. On page 138 in the English version it describes Masking images.

  • How to crop an image/audio file

i have a component where in i need to crop an image and simultaneously crop the audio file.Is there a way to do that? Can anyone help me with it?

I'm looking for the same thing.
An audio file recorded by logic audio (AIFC, not AIFF, if this makes a difference) can be transposed non destructively in the arrange window (without the time machine) by checking "follow" in the arrange window, you can adjust the transposition from -12 to +12.
When you do this, a double arrow icon is added to the audio region in the arrange window (like in this example : http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/6530/image17dp1.jpg)
I can't find the way do this with a regular aiff file (non recorded via logic, I mean).

  • How to paste an image on a layer mask?

    Hi All,
I've just started using PS Elements 10 again after not having used it for some time, and I've forgotten a few things. When I paste an image which I've selected from another image (image A) into a layer mask for image B, the image A selection appears in black and white. Also, is there a quick way to return PS Elements 10 to its default settings? I'd be grateful if you could help with these questions. Cheers!

    Hi Again Michel,
I guess I'd better say what I'm trying to do and then maybe you can help me. Maybe I'm not using the correct tool. What I wanted to do is cut a person from an image and superimpose this person on a second image. I thought I did this using the layer mask. When I do this, and look at the background image, all I can see is an outline of the shape of the person's image on the second image. Can you perhaps point me to a video which explains how to do this. I thought I had to use a layer mask to do this. Thanks for staying with me.

  • How to crop an image

Hi i am making a paint program and one of the tools i am stuck on is crop.
i have got as far as the user being able to draw a rectangle and i can get the coordinates from it, but i dont know how to get the graphics enclosed in the coordinates to make an image...can anyone help?

If you are trying to crop or clip whatever you are rendering, you can play around with the graphics's object clip property though these methods:
    java.awt.Graphics:
    clipRect(x, y, width, height)
    Shape getClip()
    setClip(x, y, width, height)
    setClip(Shape)
    java.awt.Graphics2D:
    clip(Shape)
    Read the API for details.

  • How to crop multiple images to the exact same pixel size?

I have hundreds of scans all from one book and I am trying to straighten and crop them all out to the same pixel amounts. For example, I have a bunch of scans that are 1000x1000 pixels with overscan on all sides, they are also all at an angle. In the end I want a folder with all the pages at 800x800 nice and straight. So, when I open the first one, I crop and straighten it to 800x800 and then I make a custom specification at 800x800. The problem is, when I go to the next one and hit crop and pic my specification, I find out that that specification is actually for an aspect ration, not a particular dimension. I want it to automatically put the crop window to 800x800, not just restrict the crop to that aspect ratio. If this could be done it would significantly quicken my work flow. Any help?

Good! That makes it easy. The CS6 Crop Tool will automatically snap to a selection when activated. Create a Tool Preset for the Rectangular Marquee Tool with fixed size of 800 x 800 px. Using that preset, click the RMT on an image then activate Crop Tool (or do Image > Crop).

  • How do you open a seprate Image as a layer in a picture

I have two seprate pictures, One is a Lineat and the other is the backround I want to be able to put the lineart as a layer in the backround picture But I dont know how, so does anybody know how to load an image as a layer?
    Help would be greatly appreciated!

If you want to dynamically link to the image file, the Reynolds (Mark) is correct, use the File > Place function to drop it over the background.
If you just want a copy of the image, you can open the image in PS and use the "Duplicate Layer" function (by right clicking on the layer pallette or in the Layer menu). In the prompt window, there is a dropdown where you can select which document to duplicate the layer onto. Select the PSD with the background image and that'll do it.

  • Can you crop an image in Flex?

Hi.  I am writing a small Air application in Flex where a bunch of images will be imported at a resolution of 120x80 pixels.  To use them in the application, I need them to be square at 80x80 pixels.  Right now they are squished because I am forcing the 120x80 image to fit into and 80x80 container.  To make it look more professional, I need to crop the images to 80x80 pixels.  Is there a way to do this in Flex, and if so, how?  Thanks.

Once the images are cropped to 80x80 pixels, the images will be manipulated by rotating and moving them.  Because of this, I thought that cropping them would be a better alternative to masking(I don't know if masking also masks mouse-overs and things like that, which is why I thought about cropping)
So if anyone knows how to crop an image in Flex, I would love to hear it.  Or if you know of any good resources or tutorials for it, could you point them out.  Thanks.

  • Cropping an image to a specific but non-standard size

Can anyone tell me how to crop an image to a size other than the standard sizes listed in the crop tool (e.g., 11 x 14)? This is easily done in PS Elements, but I'd like to avoid exporting and creating a duplicate of a large file just to crop for printing.
Also, is there a way to display the size of an image in inches as opposed to pixels? this would be handy after it is cropped.
    Thanks!

Just click into the width and height boxes in the crop tools dialogue box and check Constrain constrain cropping tool to:
You set the size in inches or whatever on export. When the file is within Aperture it has no size other than pixels.
    Cheers,
    Terry
