How to cull & organize recovered photos after failed drive crash

I had my iPhoto library on an external hard drive that failed
Many $$ later I got my photos back, but without any albums, etc.
All photo files are called "recoveredphotoxxxx"
No original dates for the photos show up - they all have the same date (date of recovery)
It appears that I have several images (files) for each photo - the original, the thumbnail, the altered photos, etc. and of course these are not next to each other - spead all over the place
I have 18,000 photos (a LOT)
Okay - my questions:
1. I am overwhelmed trying to edit out the thumbnails (which is the right one to delete, so many photos) - any suggestions? I was thinking of going into Finder and sorting by size and deleting the small ones, but am worried due to warnings not to muck with iPhoto files
2. any idea on how to get the photos back into chronological order? There are so many and it is taking forever to go through them 1 by 1
Mahalo (Thanks)! Liz

Molokai:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Here's a way to cull out the thumbnail (smaller) files:
1 - open the top folder that contains your photos, i.e. in subfolders, etc., and type Command-F.
2- in the search window select the following criteria.
a. Type is image
b. size is less than 100 KB
3 - in the search results window all of the thumbnail files will be listed.
4 - select all and drag to the trash or to another folder temporarily.
This will leave only those files larger than 100 KB. Check one of the photos to see if the EXIF Capture Date intact. You can use Reveal. If you get a date in the Summary window then there's a way you can batch rename the files with the Capture Date as a starting point.
Post back if they do have the Capture Date and I'll post the workflow to rename them.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application, iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How do I restore old emails from recovered data after hard drive crash?

Hi all - I used data rescue II to recover data from a crashed hard drive - seems to have worked pretty well, as the file structure seems to be mostly intact - now I'm trying to find the old emails and get them back in my inbox/sent mailboxes where they belong - any help is surely appreciated - thanks

    Hi Tommybanjo.
Mail stores the messages in .emlx files, but you cannot import individual messages directly, only entire mailboxes. In order to import the recovered .emlx files back into Mail, they must be organized as if they were in an .mbox mailbox, i.e. they must be in a Messages folder within an .mbox folder. You may create a folder called Recovered.mbox, then a Messages folder within this folder, then put the .emlx files within the Messages folder, then import that.
In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions. Note that Mail wants you to select the folder that contains the mailboxes to be imported (i.e. the folder where the .mbox folders to be imported reside), not the .mbox folders themselves nor the Messages folders within them.
Given the circumstances, however, there could be something wrong with one or more of the recovered messages and that might cause the import to fail. If that’s the case, you may try organizing the recovered messages in several smaller mailboxes and try to identify the messages that Mail has trouble with. Alternatively, you may try using emlx to mbox Converter or Emailchemy to convert the .emlx files to standard mbox format, then import that in Mail as Other.

  • Restoring Photos after Hard Drive Crash

I had upgraded my standard 80 GB hard drive to an aftermarket 120 GB hard drive in Feb. The new hard drive just crashed, but fortunately a week after I had run Backup so I'm ok. The hard drive is under warranty, but in the meantime I'm restoring as much as I can to my old 80 GB hard drive.
iTunes is working great but my problem is with iPhoto. I restored the photos from Feb-Dec to the iPhoto Library on my old/current hard drive, but none of those photos (post Feb) are showing up in iPhoto 6. The photos are there, I can see them if I navigate to them in finder. Is there a way to tell iPhoto to refresh or something???

    Doug
It does sound like your db is corrupted.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Roll and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Recovering system after hard drive crash

'We have a Toshiba Netbook NB505.  In december, the origional hard drive started crashing.  We pulled as much data off of it as possible and replaced the hard drive with a 1TB.
The netbook did not come with windows disks, and we were unaware that a recovery disk needed to be made before there was an issue.  Initially, the laptop came with Windows 7 Starter and we upgraded it through the 'upgrade anytime' option.
As we were trying to figure out how to recover the upgraded OS, we have used Lubuntu to partition the new disk and Clonezilla to clone the old drive partitions (the old drive works short term if you keep it cold).  Currently, there are the three partitions that were on the origional drive, roughly the same size they were, and the rest of the space set up for storage.  The small "first" partition and the hidden recovery partition cloned with no issues, and the 'main' boot partition appears to be a match.  None of the partitions boot (leaves a flashing cursor)
The old drive can boot into come recovery options but will not fully boot into windows to generate a recovery disk at this point.
I do have an option on the origional drive to 'restore to out of box condition', but I'm saving this as a last resort.
My questions are: is there any way to recover this OS without buying another copy (which is rediculous), and when you do the 'anytime upgrade' does it update the recovery partition to the new version, or is it still 7 Starter on that partition?
Also, the 'hold 0 on boot to enter Toshiba Recovery Wizard' does not work.  Is there another way to kickstart a recovery from the recover partition on the new drive to see if it has the upgraded copy?

is there any way to recover this OS without buying another copy
Toshiba says the recovery discs are free. The ridiculous charge is for postage and handling. You can order them at Get Recovery Media here.
when you do the 'anytime upgrade' does it update the recovery partition to the new version, or is it still 7 Starter on that partition?
    The recovery partition never changes.
Always tell us which NB505 you have when you post here. There is a label on the bottom.

  • How do I reinstall Elements 8 after Hard Drive Crash

C Drive irreparably crashed.  The PSE8 catalog folder was in C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Adobe, etc. and was backed up on a different drive (Yay Me!).  The Pictures were in E:\ Elements Pictures\ (117 GB). When Windows was reinstalled, the Drive Letters were changed by the reinstall program, such that the Windows boot drive is now the E drive and the Pictures are on the D: drive, but still in their original folder.  (Ultimately, the plan to get a new Drive, rename it C, and reinstall Windows on it.)
It appears that I cannot use "Backup and Restore" as is the common response to "How do I move Elements and Pictures to a new Computer?"
I can reinstall PSE8 on my E (boot) drive, then replace the new catalog folder with the old one which has my data.  How do I then get that catalog to look to the Pictures on the drive which has a new letter (D)?  I cannot reinstate the old drive letter, as that letter is now in use as the boot drive letter.
Am I better off just waiting for the new C drive, reinstalling Windows there, replacing the catalog folder, and relettering the Pictures drive to its old Letter?  It may be awhile before I get the new C drive as I am waiting for Seagate to replace under warranty the dead drive, and would like to if at all possible continue to use PSE8 in the interim.
Many Thanks in advance for your advice.

  • How to recover photos after restoring iPod touch?

Yesterday, there was an update for the iOS 6, I believe. When I pressed the update button, a message popped up saying that there was a problem with my iPod touch 4G and that I need to restore it. I had absolutely no idea why that message would pop up in the first place because my iPod was working just fine. But I couldn't update my iPod to the newest version if I didn't do what iTunes says... so I was about to restore my iPod, but then I was worried that all of my photos would disappear. So I decided to update my iOS later so that I could transfer all my files on to my computer. I then unplugged my iPod, and tried to turn it on but the home screen wouldn't pop - no matter what I did, all the screen showed was an itunes icon on top with a USB plug-in cord at the bottom. So I had no choice but to restore my iPod. The thing is, once I restored my iPod and all, my photos were all gone and I did not use iCloud as a back-up since a few months ago. All of my recent photos are now gone and I have no idea how to recover them. I've tried programs that aim to recover deleted photos, but they didn't work.
Is there a way to recover photos after restoring the iPod Touch?

    Hello,
It is very important to backup your device to the computer before updating or restoring.
You can restore your device to a previous backup, all the photos that were there when you made the backup should return with it, but I'm afraid that any photos taken or saved after the last backup are unrecoverable.
    I hope this helps.

As you have been told, you do not organize photos with iTunes, and the photos are really not handled by iTunes, it is just a helper. You would organize the photos on the computer like you would any files. Just remember, when you select folders in iTunes to sync, iTunes will only sync down one level, in other words, don't create folders within folders. After creating folders with names you want, put the photos in the folders and then sync to the phone. In the Photos tab, just select the individual folders you want. You do not have to sync all folders and all of the thousands that you have on the computer, only the selected ones you want. Just remember that saving photos in the camera roll, or now the recently added, is just inviting problems. That area is very much like volatile memory on the computer. If something happens to the phone and you have to reset, if you do not have those photos imported to the computer or are just relying on the iPhone backup, you could find yourself without photos at all. Import them and then sync back. That way the backup of the photos is the computer folder.

  • How can I organize my photos in icloud by album as on my Mac? And, not just Collections/Events/Year?

How can I organize my photos in icloud by album as they are on my Mac in iphoto? I want to see more than just a sort by Collection/Event/year.

You'll need to wait for all these things to come out to beta testing for that kind if detailed help. But at the moment it seems that you make the Albums in your  Photos.app on the Mac or iOS device and these then turn up on the Library in the Cloud. I can see no way to create albums in a web browser, and iPhoto doesn't communicate with the Library.

  • In iphoto, how do i save a photo after editing, in the same or higher file size, it's saves in a lower size

in iphoto, how do i save a photo after editing, in the same or higher file size, it's saves in a lower size

It's rather more complicated that this.
iPhoto is a lossless editor. You don't lose any quality on your shot in iPhoto.
The file size you see reported is the size of your iPhoto Preview: this is what gets used if you access the data via a media browser. It's a "good-enough-for-most-uses" version of the shot. Email it, upload to websites, use it in Presentation, Word processing file etc
If you want to set the quality yourself then Export the photo using the File -> Export command.
You can choose to export to Jpeg, Tiff or png. Tiff is lossless but the file sizes are up to 10 times larger. Jpeg allows you to choose different qualities: High, Medium or low. The difference is the amount of compression involved. High quality means very little compression. It's not unusual for photos exported at this setting to have a larger file size than the original.
Which setting you choose depends on the use you intend. Further editing, printing then high is important. Sending to Facebook? Well low will do just fine there as they're going to trash the file anyway.
But the key point: the file size only becomes an issue when you export.

How do I remove recovered photos (used photorec to recover lost photos) to have more space in my macbook pro HD?

    Hello there, Shrid.
The following Knowledge Base article reviews how to Sync photos:
    iTunes: Syncing photos
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
You will just sync to the new computer. Keep in mind:
    Additional Information
Syncing photos with your device will create an iPod photo cache.
Syncing photos can only happen from one computer or user account at a time. Syncing photos with a different computer or user replaces the photos on the device.
You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures in the Camera Roll or Saved Photos from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device:
Email them from the device to yourself.
Copy them from the emails to your computer.
On iPhone and iPod touch using iOS 5 and iOS 6, all synced photos will appear in a unified category called photo library. Photos are not duplicated; this is a way to view all synced albums in one place. You can also tap a specific album beneath photo library to view individual albums.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro D.

  • How can I organize my photos?

I have a pc and I want to know how I can organize my photos on my iPhone 4. Is it even possible to organize it?

Photos are not organized on the iPhone, that is done on the computer and then synced through iTunes back to the iPhone. You can arrange pictures into folders if you want, and then sync the folders you select in iTunes. You cannot, however, go folder into folder. The iPhone will not handle that grouping.
