I've drawn the rectangle then I made a selection with the marquee selection tool to delete a part of the rectangle but it deleted whole shape. Can anyone please help me out with this.
Thanks in advance.

Make your rectangle shape.  If you want it to be perfectly square, hold down the Shift key while you drag.
Make your two text layers using the centered text alignment option.
Select the entire canvas — Ctrl a (Cmd a )
Select the Move tool and then select the rectangle shape and both text layers.  You should see matching ants at the edges of your image.
Click on the Align horizontal centers icon in the Options bar. The rectangle and text layers will now be centered vertically in the image.
If you want the box centered width wise, select just the box layer, and make sure you still have the matching ants at the image edges.
Click on Align vertical centers second icon from the left in the strip above.
You will need to align the text layers to intersect the horizontal lines manually, but if you hold down the shift key while dragging, they will not move sideways.
Nearly done.
You still need those marching ants at the screed edges (Ctrl a).  Go Select > Transform selection You will now see handles on the selection.
Hold down the Alt (Opt) key, and drag either the central handles on the vertical sides towards the middle of the box. Both sides will move symmetrically.
When the select is a couple of mm clear of the wider text, click on the tick icon on the Options bar to OK it.
Make sure just the box layer is selected, and add a Layer mask. This will actually hide the bits you don't want hidden, so last step.
Invert the layer mask Ctrl i (Cmd i)

For a crisp border of any color or any size, Just expand the "Canvas" by 0.5 inches or whatever dimension your file needs.

  • How do I cut out a shape within an object in Photoshop?

I have a circle and want to cut an X with rounded corners out of the circle.
How do I do this?  In Illustrator I just lay an object on top and subtract it from the image below w/ Pathfinder.
Again how in PHotoshop?  Mask?  if so I read up on masking but I don't see that exact explanation.  Any help would be appreciate.

If you want to use paths just create the Path with any of the Path Tools or paste it in from Illustrator and invoke Layer > Vector Mask > Current Path (or command-click the Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers Panel).
Negative Vector Masks have to be set for the selected Path-elements in the Options Bar accordingly.

  • How do I use shapes I create in Adobe Shape?

All the shapes you create with Adobe Shape are stored in a CC Library.  This means you can access them in other desktop, mobile, and web apps.  Detailed instructions below.
How to access your shapes in Creative Cloud
Desktop: In order for this to work, you must have the most recent version of Illustrator and Photoshop.
Open Adobe Illustrator on your desktop.
Open the Libraries panel (Windows > Libraries)
Your shapes should be present in your Libraries.  If you don’t see them there, select the libraries drop down to see if you saved your shapes in a different library.
Now, you can drag the shape onto your canvas.
At this point,  you can continue working with your shape, by adding editing.  Or, you can simply save the file.  Of course, after you save it to your desktop, you can email, post online, etc.
    Mobile apps:
Open Adobe Illustrator Draw and open a drawing.
Tap the Shapes icon to open the Shapes menu.
Tap a library name to view the shapes in the Creative Cloud Library. Tap Change Library to select another library.
Select your shape by tapping on it.
Active Slide or Tocuh Slide. You can use Adobe Slide or Touch Slide to place the shape on the canvas. Access Touch Slide by tapping on the circular icon at the top of the menu bar.
Place the shape.  Once you have activated Touch Slide, you will see a light rendition of your shape on the canvas.  Simply double tap on the shape outline to stamp the shape in place.
    Web:
    Navigate to https://assets.adobe.com/
Select the Libraries menu item (left menu on the page)
Select the desired library (if this is your first time using Libraries, you will only have one).
This page provide a preview only.

If your using File>Place then photoshop cs2 creates what's known as Smart Objects, which photoshop 7 didn't have.
In photoshop cs2 you can rasterize the smart objects and that should make the Cut function available.
Select both placed layers, right click on the area to the right of the tumbnail and select Rasterize Layers.
If in photoshop cs2 you to Help>Photoshop Help and look under Layers>Smart Objects, that should give you a good overview of what smart objects are.

  • How can I make this shape?

How can I make this shape in fireworks:
I want some images in my website to have rounded corners. Im doing this by adding 4 divs with background images and absolutely positioning them, one over each corner of the image. The background images are PNGs with transparent areas. This works as the site's background is a solid color, so the rounded corners dont need to actually be transparent.
The issue im having is that the pixels on the curve need to be semi transparent. Id love to make this shape as a vector but I dont know how.
    Thanks

    Hi,
There is another simple way to get the shape desired. Create a rounded rectangle that is twice your corner size - both width and height wise. Now adjust the rounded corners to almost make a circle (pull the yellow corner handle towards the center of the side). Now click the corner and you will be able to toggle between the different corner types. You can now either use the shape as it is (if you need it for corners of a sprite rounded rectangle) or you can cut it up to get the desired wedge.

  • How to make one rectangle box line curved

    Hello:
have started using Illustrator and love it but am unsure of how to do something.  What I have done is create a basic business card that has a white background.  I would like the bottom half of the card to be a different colour so I added a block of blue using the rectangle tool. That looks great but I would like the top line of the rectangle, which is in the middle of the card, to be in a wave like shape.
How does one do that please ? Thank you.

  • How do I expand a shape in every direction?

I'm creating a sign. I started from a font, then converted the text to a shape to provide the sign maker with vector art. Here's the problem.
Some of the lettering is metal-like mounted on a dark acrylic backing that 's supposed to create a 3D stroke-like effect. In the original design I actually had a stroke on the lettering to mock up the effect. But now, in order to seperately cut the letters and the backing, the sign maker needs vector art for both the metal-like lettering AND the backing pieces, which extend another 1/8" beyond the metal-like in every direction.
I can't figure out how to do this in Photoshop. The metal-like letter looks like this:
I duplicated that shape to create the background. The background needs to be 1/8" bigger in EVERY direction, so that when the metal-like letter is mounted on top of it, the brown background will create a stroke effect:
To put it simply, I need to grow every border of this brown B by the same amount--the exterior as well as the 2 interior edges--so that when the yellow B (above) is placed on top of it, the brown shows a 1/8 "stroke" around the yellow B. I tried doing a straight transform, but that doesn't achieve the desired result. Another poster in the forum (answering a similar question) suggested using Modify > Expand, but I can't get that to work (the command is greyed out for some reason that I don't understand). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Increasing 1/8" in all directions may distort the font for the font letters aspect ration is not 1:1.
To increase a shape size in all directions and maintain the current aspect ratio you need to two modifier keys during the transform operation.  Holding down the shift key will constrain the transform to maintain the current aspect ratio. Holding down the Alt|Opt key cause the transform to be from the center. Hold both keys down and drag out a cornor.

How do I turn a shape layer into a mask in After Effects?

I should also mention that if you create the shape with any of the shape tools (rectangle, Polly star, eclipse) instead of the pen tool you will have to convert the shape to a bezier path before you can copy the path and paste it to a mask. Easy to do if you have the recent version of AE, not so easy if you're using an older version.
when you have trouble figuring things out simply type something like track matte in the Search After Effects help field at the top right corner of the AE application frame. You will get these resources: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/search/index.cfm?cat=support&term=Track%20matte&loc=en_US&sel f=1&lr=en_US&site=aftereffects…

  • How to cut a hole that is part of a compound path

I have spent many hours using all the tools available in Illustrator CS4 to reshape the hole that is part of a compound path with no success.
The compound path consists of a square with a round hole, I want to for example, cut the round hole in half. Erase, Knife, Pathfinder do not work. I can do it if first release the compound path, cut the round hole, then make compound path again. While this method is easy for this example but not good for very complex drawing, because it would be too time consuming to convert back and forth the compound paths and remembering which holes belong to which compound path. Please help. I am to the point where I am willing to spend money to get a good cutting tool plugin, any reccomendation?

    Sure....
    Place or Open raster image.
Live trace (whatever settings you like) I'm assuming it's a 1 color trace (line art) and not a photo or color image
Click the "Expand" button in the Control bar
    Everything should be selected/highlighted
Click the Merge button on the Pathfinder Panel (3rd from left, bottom row)
*optional -- Choose Object > Ungroup from the menu (Using Pathfinder command creates Groups for some reason. These groups aren't always needed.)
Deselect all (Command-Shift-A or Ctrl-Shift-A or just click somewhere empty to deselect the artwork)
Select the Direct Selection Tool (the white arrow)
Click the center of a "hole" or counter. This will select one of the superfluous white shapes.
Choose Select > Same > Fill & Stroke from the menu. All the extra shapes should highlight.
    Hit delete.
You should be left with just black compound paths with no superfluous shapes anywhere. In fact, after this if you Select All, the color panel shoudl show a simple black fill and no stroke. Of course, this somewhat depends upon your Live trace settings.
What this does is merge all black and white shapes into the simplest form and at the same time it cuts through bottom objects with top objects. So if you have a white shape sitting on top of a black shape, it cuts that white shape out of the black. This ensures all the black has the correct compound shape assignments. Sometimes with Live Trace you can get white fill areas and not get the corresponding compound hole below it. Or the compound hole will not be exactly the same shape as the white object sitting on top of it. Using Merge corrects that. Then deleting the white shapes just removes all the unnecessary objects. If you want a color for the compound holes, just draw a rectangle or shape below the black and fill it with any color. All you need to is alter the counters or compound holes now to correct anything. No more double paths.
All these steps are not always necessary. But it's sometimes good practice depending upon what you are tracing. Once you do it once or twice you'll see it's only about a 1-2 minute processes and most of that will be waiting for the Merge command to complete.

  • How do I stop two shapes touching when they overlap?

Hi there! I'm trying a version of the tutorial (I'm new to Illustrator) but I want to find out how to cut away a bigger version of the top shape from the bottom shape. I know that's not very clear, so here are some pictures of what I mean!

    What I want to happen:
I want the white around the fish to be transparent. If I try adding a stroke it cuts into the fish shape not away from it.

    clazface,
If it is as it looks, you may:
    1) Select the top shape path (group) and Object>Path>Offset by the desired gap width, then change its colour to white so you can see what you are doing and possibly undo/redo to adjust;
    2) Select the offset path and the underlying path and in the Transparency palette flyout click Make Opacity Mask with Clip unticked and Invert Mask ticked.
