How to decide between OWB and ODI?

Having to decide whether to choose Oracle Data Integrator or Oracle Warehouse Builder like tool for creating a dataware house and loading data into it, what should I choose and why?
I'm an old pl/sql developer but new on datawarehousing (I've been dealing with it for few months) and I'd like to undestand what fits better for me. It seems to me that OWB and ODI look not very different to each other, don't they?
My Oracle vers. is 10gR2
Thanks!

Thanks!Oracle corporation's statement of direction says ODI is their strategic ETL tool and if you and investing into Oracle ETl for the 1st time then it is better to invest in ODI .
OWB will be supported and finally OWB and ODI will get merged into a single tool.
For a pl/sql guy like you , the code generated by OWB is easy to understand as OWB mainly generates pl/sql code ( apart from sql loader and sap abap code ) . But that should not deter you to use ODI as ODI generates mainly SQL code (plus sove native code depending upon the technology used and KM) .

    Dear All,
I would like to know how OWB is different from ODI and would appreciate any resources to understand how OWB 10g works, how to create mappings, what is OWB 10g architecute and so on.. I know how ODI works but do not have any idea how OWB works since I never worked on OWB.
I wont to learn OWB 10g.

  • How to decide no.Technical and Business Systems required for any senario

    Hi XI experts
I am very new to XI but it is very interesting ....
To develop any scenario how to decide Technical systems and Business
         Systems...
For any scenario but how to decide the systems howmany to create ?
I had a scenario like SOAP to RFC to SOAP ? For this how to decide?
One more like FILES to BPM to JDBC ...like
Can any one explain me for any scenario which may include SAP
         R/3,CRM,APO,BW,JDBC,SOAP,RFC...any system.
    Adv..thanks and points to all
    Kiranlvs

    Hi Kiran.
Ok here I will try to answer your question.
    1) SOAP (Web Service) -> RFC (R/3) -> SOAP (Web Service)
    a) you will need to create a Business System for R/3.
    b) you will need to create a third party business system or a business service for the Web Service system.
    2) File (File System) -> XI -> JDBC (Database)
    a) you will need to create a third party business system or a business service for the File system.
    b) you will need to create a third party business system or a business service for the Database system.
note: BPM is one of the functionality of XI so there is no need to create a BS or TS for it.
    3) CRM or APO or BW (SAp Systems) -> XI -> IDoc (R/3)
    a) Business System for CRM or APO or BW
    b) Business System for R/3.
The bottom line is you need to create Business System for any SAP system that is part of you integration scenario or when you have to Idoc, RFC and Proxies.
If the business system already exists for the SAP system then you just need to attach your SWCV or Product to that Business System.

how is communication between essbase and shared services done?

I am not sure exactly what you need to know and it depends on the version
Prior to 11.1.2 it communicates using LDAP to port 28089, HTTP to 28080, JDBC to the hss relational database
11.1.2 - JDBC to the HSS relational database

  • Need help deciding between i5 and i7 X220

I am trying to decide between i5 and i7.  The extra money doesn't bother me and I know the i7 isn't that much faster than the i5.
There are problems with the mSata drives for those with i7/USB3 machines but I don't plan on using mSata yet.
Some people have had problems with their USB 3.0 ports not providing full speed.   As an aside, you can get newer USB 3.0 drivers from http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=19880&keyword=usb+3.0&lang=eng .  There is also new NEC/Renesas firmware at http://www.station-drivers.com/page/nec.htm.  I have used these on my desktop with an add-on NEC/Renesas-based USB 3.0 adapter with success.
So the question is, are i7 owners happy with their choice or should i7 be avoided for now?
Also, any i7 owners have their USB 3.0 working fine with a USB 3.0 hard drive?
Are there any other issues such as heat or fan noise that are worse on the i7?

Also, will the batty life be affected by the i7/i5 choice?

  • How to choose between CBR and 2-Pass VBR ?

    Hi,
I know alot of virtual ink has flowed about this topic, but I couldnt find the answer I need.
I'm compressing an 83minute feature film to DVD. Source material is 10bit Uncompressed YUV from PAL DigiBeta, sent directly from FCP to Compressor. Compressor is at version 2.0.1, and all ProApp and QT updates are applied.
Compressing at a CBR (ie: 1pass) with a data rate of 7.4Mbps gives a .m2v file size of about 3.3GB and takes about 3hours.
Compressing at 2-Pass VBR with a max data rate of 7.4Mbps gives a file size of about 3.9GB and takes 12 hours+.
Shouldnt the two pass be smaller given the same max data rate?
When I compare the two visually, I cannot tell any difference between them. I'm looking at areas with alot of motion, or with fine detail, or camera movement, but they look about the same.
How to decide which to use?
    Many thanks....
    G5 Dual2.0 (PCI-X), 4.5GB RAM, 23" Cinema Display, PB G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi There
CBR compression is generally better quality - especially out of Compressor 2 - but usually a higher file size that VBR - can't explain your result there. Check fades, dissolves, small text and camera movement for comparsion between the two mpegs. If you still can't tell the difference then use the bigger one if you have the room, if you don't use the smaller one. If the larger file is better but you're worried about disc space then build your disc using the lager one anyway. If after your created the VIDEO_TS file it still too big use DVD2ONE or DVD Remaster to shrink it back down - I doubt you'd see any visiual difference.
    Hope that helps
    Cheers

  • E72 - How to toggle between portrait and landscape...

Some games refuse to run by displaying "This game is not supported in landscape mode. Please turn your handset to portrait mode".
How can I toggle between landscape and portrait modes in Nokia E72?

You can't do that because of the screen orientation which is landscape only in case of E72, E71, E5.

  • How to distinguish between enabled and disabled tasks in SSDT-BI 2012

    Hi,
I've got SSDT-BI 2012 together with VS2012 installed. Simple questions: What is the difference between enabled and disabled tasks in control flow from the design/color point of view? I do see that the disabled tasks changes to grey (omg are you really kidding
me????) from black. This could be a bad joke or dream however is not.
So I'm kindly asking you to help me solve this problem. How can I change the color difference between these two options (enabled task vs disabled task)? I do not care whether the one will be yellow or pink, simply just need to be recognizable at first
look and not under long and painful examination.
Thanks for your reply. Hopefully it will be useful.
    Karol.

    Hi Karol,
It’s true that it only changes the font color of the task name text to grey after disabling a task in SSDT 2012. In SSDT 2010, the whole task control including icon will turn grey after it is disabled; in BIDS, the background color of the task control will
turn grey after it is disabled. These behaviors are by design. Personally, I agree with you that this behavior in SSDT 2012 is not very readable.

  • How to differentiate between Parent and Child in IBASE?

Hi. I am working on enhancing a BAPI :BAPI_GOODSMVT_CREATE by calling the following function module IBPP_CREATE_IBASE at its exit.
The BAPI is being called from an SAP ME system and will be passing MATNR and Serial Number of Parent and Child materials to create the IBASE in ECC system. I am confused as to how to differentiate between whether a object is Parent or a Child when the BAPI: BAPI_GOODSMVT_CREATE is called.

if you have NULL valued fields. If
you do a compare and one or both are NULL, then the result is always NULL,
never true or false. Even comparing two fields which are both NULL will
give NULL as result, not true! Or if you have something like "select
sum(field) from ..." and one or more are NULL, then the result will be
NULL. Use always "if field is NULL ..." for NULL checking and for safety
maybe something like "select sum( IsNull(field,0) ) from ...". Check the
    function ISNULL() in the manual.

  • Trying to decide between i7 and quad core - was told that i7 will overheat?

    Hi,
Did some searching in old threads on this here and online - seemed inconclusive so thought I'd ask again since the Core i7s have been out a while now.
I've been trying to decide between buying a quad core and one of the recent MPB 15" i7s (specifically the 2.66 with the hi res non glare screen). I use FCP, DVDSP, Photoshop etc - usually for several hours a day.
Although the quad core seems the logical choice, I'm on a budget would like some wiggle room to get some other gear - if I get the MPB, I'd be able to sell my 13" 2.53 Core 2 Duo and get that gear. On the other hand, I'm trying to think long term in terms of the viability of the machine I buy.
Just got off the phone with MacMall who told me that because the quad core uses physical cores and the MPB Core i7 uses virtual cores there is a substantial overheating issue with the MPB if you're doing sustained work - say working in Photoshop all day, as I often do. He said that the MBP Core i7s weren't designed to do that so the overheating could cause logic board and other issues over time.
Has anyone experienced this?? Or if you have other thoughts on my dilemma, would love to hear them.
    Thanks!
    cb

I will be a bit more blunt than the other person. Whomever you talked to at MacMall was full of it.
Either you transcribed the details of the conversation wrong, or they have no clue what they're talking about.
Even if you're doing a lot of work in Photoshop all day, the odds of you doing anything that requires a lot of sustained heavy action by the CPU is going to be low. There might be 5 minutes worth of something here or there, but most of the time it's probably going to be pretty limited CPU wise.
There's a reason Apple doesn't put the Core i5 or i7 into the 13" MBPs, and that's because there's just not enough room in the case for the second fan the 15 and 17" models have.
But long story short, Apple isn't like HP or Acer, who will stuff desktop CPUs into laptops because there's some idiot out there who will buy it. And it would be pretty stupid to put a high end CPU like the Core i7 into a laptop, and then expect people NOT to use it.
MBPs aren't really designed for hours worth of sustained work like you'd get from gaming, but I don't think you'd run into any problems with Photoshop.

  • Deciding between iMac and Mac Pro

My current desktop computer (a PC) is basically dead. It is under extended warrenty but the custom build place I got it from tells me nothing is covered (because of their negligence but they won't admit that) And basically they want me to pay out of pocket for a brand new computer.
However after having a Macbook Pro for a year and loving it I decided to just change my desktop over to a Mac which I want to purchase by the end of October (or if this computer gives out before then earlier) However I just can't decide between an iMac or a Mac Pro.
The 2 big things are video editing at the moment just Final Cut Express and gaming when/if I get a chance. The iMac I'm looking at is the 3.06 GHz, with 4 GB ram, and a Geforce 8800GS video card. On the Mac Pro side it'd be more or less the Stock Mac Pro with 2.8 GHZ Quad core x2, 4 GB Ram, and I'd purchase the ATI HD 3870 video card for it.
The other difficulty is I do need a new monitor as well with the iMac a new monitor isn't an issue but with the Mac Pro it's extra and I guess I'm trying to debate if the difference between the 2 computers is really worth the cost. I'd like for the new computer to last me 3-4 years maybe a bit longer so it's just a matter of which is better for my needs. Is the Mac Pro really worth it over the iMac? I know I cant replace anything in the iMac but if it can do me for awhile I don't see why that'd be a downside
The other factor is, buying at the end of october, is it wise or should I try and get as much life out of my dead PC and try and wait for the next iMac/Mac Pro refresh?
Thank you to everyone who replies with their opinions.

The biggest advantage of the MacPro is its expandability. Yes, it is faster too, but is the speed difference worth the extra cost? Looking at what you can expand in a MacPro (unlike PCs which can be swapped out component by component until nothing but the case is original equipment) I decided that expandability was too limited to be worth the price and the speed increase wasn't either.
In the past I'd bought a Mac tower and kept it 5 years, over those five years upgrading the graphics card, swapping out the CPU, bigger drives, etc. I looked at the MacPro and concluded there wasn't much I would or could do to expand it other than a bigger hard drive or more hard drives and more memory. Maybe a better graphics card. Meanwhile, I could buy an iMac, keep it for 2 1/2 years, sell it, buy a new iMac and keep it for 2 1/2 years and wind up spending less (thanks to the high resale values of Macs).

  • Comparison between OWB and PL/SQL development

    Hello,
I am preparaing a presentation comapring development in OWB and development in PL/SQL.
Can anybody know the time saved by using OWB (ratio, percentage...) ?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi,
    1) OWB is simple to use.
    2) we need not know the internal logic of PL/SQL to work on OWB.
    3) All the cursors will be created automatically and nothing needs to be mentioned.
    4) The GUI is very easy to operate and adding conditions are very simple.
    5) The loading properties can be set easily and we know how the mapping will behave.
All said above are the advantages of OWB, but OWB is only a tool and a TOOL will always have its limitations.PL/SQL is a kind of programming language with which we can do anything and everything but in OWB we cannot make everything possible.
    Regards
    Bharath
