How to decide if an iCal event will send out an email to invitees?

Looks like iCal Reply Checker doesn't work anymore in the latest iCloud update of Lion (10.7.2)?
Is there any way to add someone as an invitee, but not actually send them a calendar invite?

This is very odd. The XMLEncoder already does a trial decode to make sure it has serialized the object.
Doesn't a line like this one
<object class="java.awt.geom.Point2D$Float"/>
indicate that an object (as part of an object graph) was encoded without any additional information?Exactly. But the XMLEncoder assumes wevertying is a Java bean, with getters and setters. Any object without set methods isn't going to be serialized correctly. You need to add your own PersistenceDelegate for any such classes you find. Thanks, ejp - knowing that an object cannot be reconstructed by encoding/decoding it would be sufficient. Currently my strategy is:
a) Encode the object to memory, using XMLEncoder.
b) If no exceptions were thrown, parse the resulting XML for lines of the form "<object ... />". If any such line is found, the object is no candidate for XML-serialization.
c) If the object (or a super-class) overrides Object.equals, the XML is decoded and the resulting object is compared to the original one.

How can I get my ical events from my iMac to my iPhone? Anything I entered into ical on my iPhone will transfer to ical on iMac when plugged in, but not vice versa. I think I have changed my iPhone (after looking at similar questions) to iCloud, but it's still not syncing.

You need to sign into your iCloud account on your Mac, and check the Calendar option. System Preferences>iCloud, sign on your iCloud account, check the apps you want to sync with your device.

how do I see my ICal events on my work Google Calendar?

I thought that was the case.  I'm happy enough syncing Entourage to my iPhone.  The last update to Entourage actually fixed that.  I was just curious if the Entourage calendar in iCal would appear in the iCloud via iCal. Obviously it doesn't unless you want to "force" the issue.  Thanks for taking the time.  Bill

How do I get rid of a "bot" on my Mac that is sending out erroneous emails to everyone in our address book?

You will have to look around your machine & figure out the name of the program.
    try /application/utilities/activity monitor
I recommend that you get a littlesnitch. littlesnitch will track your Web traffic and tell you which applications are sending data from your computer. Be sure to run it awhile because it will trigger a number of alerts. In trail mode, it will run for three hours per boot for a about a month.

This list maybe different in your release of X.
Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

How do I send out an email, so that I can recieve confirmation that email was delivered?

If you are using Apple Mail, it does not support read receipts. Even if it did, most people will ignore such requests, so at best, it'd be a hit and miss situation.

  • I have a virus on my iPad that sends out bogus emails to everyone in my contact list. I don't know where it came from (email, apps not from iTunes, etc) but it sits somewhere on my iPad. Does anyone know of a scanning app that will find and eliminate it?

I have a virus on my iPad that sends out bogus emails (no subj and an URL that goes nowhere) to everyone in my contact list. I don't know how it got on my machine (email, non-iTunes apps, etc.) Does any one know of a scanning app that can find this virus and eliminate it? I have an iPad version 3 (WIFI) with 6.0.2 IOS. This scanner should be capable of running on my iPhone as well -- just in case it made it to to my other IOS machine. Thanks for your help! Steve

The chances that it's a virus on your iPad or iPhone is very slim. Who is your mail provider? it's far more likely that your address has been spoofed and it's your mail service that has been compromised not your iDevice. I know my Yahoo mail was hacked and people in my address book received spam mails that I didn't send.
have you changed the address on your e-mail account?

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
So we have DSL Modem <-> Base Station <-> Computer connected by Ethernet.
    Is the Modem Routing ?
Is the Base Station set to "Share An IP" ?
(i.e are there two DHCP servers on your LAN ?)
Is Internet Sharing On in th G5s System Preferences > Sharing pane ?
In the Base Station is Port Mapping Protocol Enabled if it is doing routing ?
It is in the NAT tab of the Internet Pane.
Is the G5 also doing WiFi to the Base Station ?
Also check the Modem is not Blocking PINGS as this log shows no PING (But I am not sure it even got that far)

I'm trying to reset my Apple ID password. They said they will send me an email but after months I still did not receive it.

Your password was sent to your emergency email address.  Perhaps you have an email you never use?   I use the free email from my cable TV account as my emergency email.
Your Apple account and cloud account are separate.   You could even have completely different user and password.   Most of us use the same user ID and password, but they are not the same thing, don't mix them up.
If you can't retrieve emergency email, you will have to call apple support.

  • How can non-visible orphan iCal events be deleted?

Bear with me, this is going to sound very confusing.
I have reported this via the iCal feedback on Apple's Product Feedback main page:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
but nothing has changed (not surprising, but more on that later).
My wife publishes her calendar from her computer to MobileMe via iCal (version 3.0.8 on OS X 10.5.8). I subscribe to it on my computer via iCal (version 4.0 on OS X 10.6.1). In her iCal and my iCal, all appears OK. But when I view her published calendar in a web browser (right-click in iCal to "Show Calendar on MobileMe") two orphan all-day events appear (one on 20 October and one on 27 October). And since her calendar appears in my iCal, her calendar appears on my iPhone (OS 3.1.2) AND those two orphan events appear on the iPhone. When the wife logs into her MobileMe account via the web interface and views her calendar, the two orphan events DO NOT appear. Since the two events do not appear to her she can not delete them. But they are cluttering up my iPhone calendar display!
    To recap:
    The two orphan events appear:
    - on my iPhone in the Calendar app
    - via a web browser on my Mac
The two orphan events DO NOT appear:
    - on wife's iCal
    - on wife's MobileMe account
    - my iCal via subscription to wife's calendar
The wife did a Sync reset. No change. She unpublished her calendar and I unsubscribed. After waiting 3 days, she published her calendar again, I then re-subscribed. The two orphan events re-appeared but can't be deleted since they don't appear in her iCal or MobileMe account.
    So, there are two questions:
    1. How does she delete these orphan events since she can not see them?
    2. How does my iPhone get them since they don't appear in my iCal and why do they appear via a web browser if they don't appear for her?
I mentioned earlier that I've reported this via Apple's feedback page. I have reported many iCal publish and subscribe problems over the past year. But I have decided that no one at Apple actually ever sees this feedback. Why do I think that? Because, not only have I reported problems with the application, I have also reported problems with the feedback page itself. For example, the latest version of iCal shown on the page is 3.0. How long has 4.0 been out? Also, the page still references ".Mac". Huh? Gee, I thought that was re-branded to MobileMe a long time ago. Since Apple has not updated the feedback page, no one at Apple must be monitoring feedback submitted via those pages, or perhaps they just don't care anymore about their Product Feedback pages. At least, that is the impression they give.
Thanks for the time and any suggestions on how to get the two orphan events to go away. --Mike

    Wish I could help.
Instead, I'll simply let you know that you are not alone. The only difference is that I have an orphan calendar that appears on my iPhone.
Said calendar does NOT appear in iCal on my MBP NOR does it appear in Mobile Me.
I do not sync via iTunes.
I would LOVE to know how to delete it as it creates duplicate events for me.

  • How to view contents of iCal event

This is basic… I have an event in iCal.  It's thirteen words long, but iCal only displays seven words then '…'.  How do I see the whole event?  iCal displayed multiple lines in previous versions– why only four truncated ones now?

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and paste in the following:
    tell application "Finder"
    repeat with this_num from 1 to 5
set the_item to item this_num of window 1
set the_name to name of the_item
set the_text to (read (the_item as alias) from 1 to 15)
    tell application "TextEdit"
    set text of document 1 to (text of document 1) & the_name & return & the_text & return & return
    end tell
    end repeat
    end tell
Before running the script, place the folder containing the files in the frontmost Finder window; you may want to split the files between several different folders and process each folder before heading on to the next one. The numbers in blue can be customized as needed; the first one controls how many files the script will search on each run, and the other two define what part of the file will be searched. The output from a file which is in a format other than plain text may contain document formatting and other content which will look like random characters.

  • Remove an iCal event without sending updates?

So... I have a thorny question that nobody seems to have an answer to.
I use my Mac at work (as well as at home).
I have 2 calendars- 'Work' is connected to my Exchange account. 'Home' is synced through iCloud.
For some inexplicable reason, when I get a repeating meeting invite from a customer (who is using Google calendar in their company) to my work Exchange mail account the invite goes a bit nuts. Basically the invite goes into my 'Home' calendar and sets me as the meeting organiser!
So... now I have a meeting invite, that I cannot remove, in the wrong calendar.
If I remove it it threatens to send out meeting cancellations to all (20!) of the attendees! Needless to say I will not be in a good place if that happens!
So my challenge to you all- how on earth do I hack this meeting invite out of my iCloud calendar?
From searching around there seems to have been an application, called iCalpone, that could do this, but it is no longer available.
There is also http://www.nhoj.co.uk/icalreplychecker/ but that appears not to work for iCloud calendars.
    Help!

Hmm- yeah- it sounds like a different problem that could use the same solution I'm looking for.
In MobileMe it was easy enough as you could backup your calendar to a file, edit the file, hack out the offending entries, and then wipe out your MobileMe calendar and sync from the saved version (by telling it to use the version on your Mac as the canonical version).
You can't do that in iCloud.
I've got a call open with Apple on this issue right now and they are saying that there's no real way for them to remove the errant meeting and I'll probably have to wait until it expires in December (and just be very careful not to accidentally alter the meeting causing lots of notifications to be sent out).
However they are still looking into it in the hope that they can find a solution. Watch this space.

  • What is the minimal Format of an iCal event to attach to an email?

    Hello all!
I just finished a large order page for a taxi friend. I would like to send the order with an iCal event attached to an email. He should only click on this new file, to enter this pickup order to his iCal ...
I am struggling with the format. In my CGI script I have the following format, where the $variables are replaced with the convinient strings:
    BEGIN:VCALENDAR
    BEGIN:VEVENT
    DTEND;TZID=Europe/Berlin:$ical_data_end
    SUMMARY:$ical_summary
    DTSTART;TZID=Europe/Berlin:$ical_data_start
    DTSTAMP:$ical_dtstamp
    LOCATION:$ical_location
    SEQUENCE:0
    DESCRIPTION:$ical_comment
    BEGIN:VALARM
    TRIGGER:-PT1H
    DESCRIPTION:Event reminder
    ACTION:DISPLAY
    END:VALARM
    END:VEVENT
    END:VCALENDAR
Does a time string like "20120608T123500" has to finish with a "Z" ? Do I need additional informations, like "UID:", "X-WR-ALARMUID:" ... In any case my iCal event sent by email is not adding to the iCal saying: "iCal can't read this calendar. No events have been added to your iCal calendar."
I would be grateful for any hint
    marek

    Surprise Surprise!
I realized after heavy testing, that a DTSTAMP: is not needed.
But there is apparently a problem with the DATE-TIME format: Perhaps for other readers, which are in such a desparate situation, as I am since two days now!!! here some explanations:
The reference about iCal format you find in RFC 5546
DTSTART; and DTEND; have a time string like follows:
    yyyymmddThhmmss
In the middle the big letter "T". But you have to add the time zone: for me it is the following:
    DTSTART;TZID=Europe/Berlin:20120608T062500
Now the big surprise: this time format with an hour over 12 ooops! I tested now once again like follows
    DTEND;TZID=Europe/Berlin:20120608T212500
    DTSTART;TZID=Europe/Berlin:20120608T202500
changing the hh (hours) with one hour difference up until here. 10 Minutes again, iCal was freezing with hours over 19. I swear!
Ok to answer my original question: What is the minimal format of an iCal event, which you may attach to an email:
    BEGIN:VCALENDAR
    BEGIN:VEVENT
    DTEND;TZID=Europe/Berlin:20120608T212500
    SUMMARY:Name
    DTSTART;TZID=Europe/Berlin:20120608T202500
    LOCATION:MUC
    SEQUENCE:0
    BEGIN:VALARM
    TRIGGER:-PT1H
    DESCRIPTION:Event reminder
    ACTION:DISPLAY
    END:VALARM
    END:VEVENT
    END:VCALENDAR
But be aware, that this is buggy. Be carefull and have a nice evening
    marek
