How to delete a clip?

...without deleting all sorts of other unrelated stuff.
Know this falls somewhere in the realm of FCPX now using connected clips, storylines, etc... versus tracks, but haven't found a way to do this simple form of edit yet. I'm going to describe this using "tracks" even though that's the wrong terminology.
One video track, one audio track.
Video track consists of several clips, audio track consists of several tracks.
I simply want to delete one of the video clips, and close the gap where that clip was.
When I do this, it removes a clip or two of the audio as well, and shifts everything else in the timeline.

That accurately describes the symptom I'm trying to avoid ... the audio downstream shifts to close the gap. Problem is, that audio is a series of narration clips & it simply deletes a portion of the narration.
Screenshots:
Clip I want to delete is bordered in yellow. All the audio above needs to remain as it is, unchanged, untouched. (Would simply lock those "tracks" in previous FCP versions). Would like video downstream to shift forward & close the gap:
Tried "lift from storyline" and can delete the clip, but it inserts a black plug. Deleting this causes all the same problems as deleting the clip itself.
This is what it looks like after the clip is deleted. Everything downstream shifts forward, just as you indicated.
I need the video to shift forward, but the audio to remain untouched.

  • How to delete a clip and expand the one beside it?

I'm thinking this is probably very straightforward but I don't know how. I have a section synched to the beat of the music soundtrack. There are several short clips I want to remove and have the clip beside the one to be deleted expand to replace it while maintaining the timing so everything stays in synch (ie delete clip #11 and have clip #12 expand to use the time formerly taken by #11 and #12). I've been doing this by rolling the edit point over the one I want to remove but then there's always one frame remaining which I then have to delete and then expand the remaining clip to compensate. Somewhere I'm sure I read how to do this in a less convoluted way. Can anyone tell me how?

The best solution when you are synching to a music sound track would be to put the music in the primary storyline, so think of doing that in the future.
    For the present situation...
It *should* work with the trim tool by rolling the first part of the clip over the second; the problem, as you pointed out, is that the second clip will not be trimmed to zero length: it will leave a single frame.
One way around this involves lifting from the primary storyline:
    1) Select the clip you want to extend. Hit Cmd-Option-Up arrow to lift from the primary.
    2) Extend the now lifted clip; use the snapping to make it end exactly where it should.
    3) Hit Cmd-Option-Down Arrow to overwrite to the primary storyline.

  • How to delete audio clip/soundtrack from video

Hi - I have been creating my first ever video (joining together footage from GoPro files from a family skiing day, so pretty amateur stuff).
After doing some basic stuff like deleting lots of even more dull stuff than the remainder will be, I'm left with a heap of separate files where I've put transitions into the gaps.
I then added an Adobe soundtrack/audio to the whole thing.
Possibly mistakenly I then did a few more bits and pieces to the video, like speeding a few bits up and so on.  The act of speeding some sections up using Premiere Elements then created 'gaps' in the timeline which I've worked out form some googling I think are there simply because there's underlying audio.
The difficulty I'm having now is - how do I just simply delete the underlying audio in it's entirety - there must be a simle way of dleting it all, but I can't find it.
Then I can just change the video as I see fit, delete and close gaps, and then reapply audio once I'm finished.
    Anyone know ?
PS. I have done some painful resectioning of the underlying audio to try and close the gaps but that hasn't worked very well as in the timeline, the audio isn't directly lined up with the video above it so very easy to delete video when trying to delete sections of audio, therefore simpler to just delete all audio I think.
    Cheers.

You will see Steve's name mentioned in several of those, like is Basic Training Series and Learning Series. There are also some AdobeTV tutorials, that I find very useful.

  • How to delete overwrite clip and bring back original material

First project on any Premiere. Using Windows Premiere Pro CS6.
I have a long (three minute) clip on Video 1 timeline I'll call "Original" with Audio on Audio 1. I'm Overwriting short video clips and placing these short clips onto Video 1.
(I have to place them on Video 1 if I want to use video transitions, right? I'd rather place the short clips onto Video 2 so the Original video would stay underneath)
Anyhow, I've got one of these short clips I want to delete from the Video 1 timeline and end up with the Original clip playing video and audio with no gaps in video or audio and no holes (causing a jump) in the Original clip.
When I choose the Ripple Delete, the short overwrite video clip deletes, and the gap goes away. But I'm left with a jump cut and a "seam" at the cut point!
What can I do to delete the short clip, and bring back the Original overwritten video so that it plays seamlessly with no gap and no jump just as it did before the overwrite?
This is easy and it's just late, right?

(I have to place them on Video 1 if I want to use video transitions, right? I'd rather place the short clips onto Video 2 so the Original video would stay underneath)
If you'd rather put it on video track 2, go ahead, when you add a transition to- or from video2 (on the beginning or end of the desired clip on V2) it will transition to/from video 1.
What can I do to delete the short clip, and bring back the Original overwritten video so that it plays seamlessly with no gap and no jump just as it did before the overwrite?
    exactly what Jon said.

  • How do I delete a clip without every other clip in my timeline moving over?

So i've been editing for hours, and somehow, the first 30 seconds of my movie were screwed up. So now i'm trying to re-edit the first 30 seconds. When i try to delete a clip, the rest of the clips following the deleted one, move over to this empty space. I do not want this to happen!!!!! I want the other clips to stay in the same place!!!! How do I delete a clip without having all the clips after it move over to the deleted space????
    Please help.
    Thank you.

    Hello, richardzulu!
    Welcome to the discussions.
In answer to your question, the clips behind the one you delete must move over to close the gap between the clips, an empty space left by the clip that you deleted. Otherwise, you would have a black/blank part in your movie.
You CAN purposely create a black clip if you wish, but probably you just want the movie to continue as you have created it, leaving out the deleted clip. If your movie is just video, it should work out to be the same once the deleted clip is gone.
However, if you have added some other audio, and not locked it to its corresponding video clip, the timing of the audio to the video will be off. Use the "Advanced" tool to select 'Lock audio clip at playhead' to avoid this. Once the audio is locked to a specific video clip, edits to other clips can be done without separating the audio and video. Occasionally, they still do get misaligned, so you do have to keep checking.
If you really want to keep all the other clips the same without doing anything else, switch to Timeline view, and move the trailing movie over from the clip you want to delete, making sure that the length you move is the same as the clip to be deleted. Then, delete the clip. iMovie will create a black clip in that space and the rest of your clips will remain untouched. However, as I said, the movie will be interupted by this black clip.

  • Every cut I make in the sequence window leaves one remaining frame from its deleted neighbor clip. How do I turn off this feature - It is driving me mad.

Every cut I make in the sequence window leaves one remaining frame from its deleted neighbor clip. How do I turn off this feature - It is driving me mad.

Here are 3 pictures detailing what I'm experiencing.
Picture 1; clip 1 tail frame.
Picture 2; clip 2 head frame.
Picture 3; clip 2 head frame is now tail frame of clip 1.
does this help describe what is happening? Basically every cut I make
leaves an unwanted frame as a ghost of the missing cut.

  • How do I Stop Ripple Deleting of Clip in V1?

I'm using DSP 4. I have a clip on V1 that I altered in FCP. I want to replace the original clip with the new one. They're the same length. If I delete the clip in DSP the rest of the clips ripple delete and fill in where the clip was. How can I replace a clip in V1 with one of the same length.
    Thanks,
    Frank
    Kinnelon, NJ

If the new file has the same name, you cam just replace the file in the assets and DVDSP must read the new one.
Sometimes you need to make the change with DVDSP closed and be sure to empty the trash after deleting the old one. Are you encoding inside DVDSP or the video file is encoded in Compressor?
    Hope that helps !

  • How to Delete several Audio clips from Video clips on Timeline of APPro CS5

I  would like to know how to delete multiple audio clips from Video clips at once in time line in APPro CS5? Please advice step-by-step procedure. I can DELETE audio from a single Video clip. But I wanted to DEL Audio from multiple video clips. Your help is much appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for the advice given by Shooternz, Colin and Jim. Your help is much appreciated for a beginner like me... Jim's idea was also good..It worked for me and also safe if I need to use the original audio. Following method also found good...but previous audio clip cannot be extracted after deleting it. ... 1. Hold down "ALT" key first then select the first audio clip in the chain of video clips to Delete. 2. Hold down " Shift + Alt " keys together and click right mouse button on all audio clips to be deleted one by one. Make sure only audio clips are selected. 3. Then release ALT+Shift keys and then click right mouse button and select "Clear" from pull down menu to Delete all selected audio clips on the time line. This method works very well for me. Thanks for every one who has adviced me how to do it. Thanks guys... If u all find better method tha above...please inform us. Thx.

  • Pardon my ignorance, but how do I delete a clip?

I've two queries for anyone out there willing to throw me a bone.
    1. how do i delete a single clip from my hard drive?! i'm new to final cut and am struggling. its not really spelled out in my phone book sized manual.
    2. if i have some footage shot in 16:9 and some in 4:3 is there a way to chop the sides off the 16:9 or, assuming i'm editing for a 4:3 screen should i just let the tv do it for me?
you are all too kind with your help!

    I don't want to complicate things - BUT . . .
Did you really mean delete a Clip from your Hard Drive - or did you mean delete the Clip from your FCP browser window (as Shane described)?
When you capture footage to the Hard Drive, it's saved as a Media File in your Capture Scratch folder . . .
Deleting the clip from the FCP browser (as Shane described) will leave the original Media File (still taking up space) in your Capture Scratch folder on your HD.
Final Cut Pro > System Settings will tell you which your Capture Scratch folder is.
If you really want to delete the Media File from the Hard Drive, this is where to go to use Finder to move it to the trash. If you do this, then empty the trash, the file will be lost.

  • How do I change a clip from say, side by side to picture in picture without deleting the clip then reinserting it

I'm creating an iMovie '11 project and added a side by side video clip but now I want to change the side by side to a picture in a picture. The only way I now know is to delete the clip, then replace it and when I do that, the advanced tools window opens and I can pick.  Is there a way to open that window when the clip is already in place?

I also have this question. Avid lets you change the frame up/down -  to/from a dissolve point. In other words, I could have a dissolve go "up" at, for example, 5 frames, and then "down" at, say, 15 frames. As it stands now, FCPX only allows you the same amount of frames on either side of the cross-dissolve. (A 30-frame dissolve is split 15 frames on either side of the transition.)
Other NLE's give you the option for a dissolve to occur at the BEGINNING, in the MIDDLE (STANDARD CROSS-DISSOLVE) or at the END of a transition. (Depending, of course, on if you have the "handles" to execute the transition,)
Can we achieve this in FCPX? Is this where we launch the "precision editor?"

  • How do I delete a clip from the middle of a scene

Trying to delete a clip from a scene in the middle of a movie.
The trim option only seems to let you keep what you want but won't delete what you don't want.

The choices you mention only appear when in the Event and perform what AppleMan has described. You need to do the edit in the Project. Following AppleMan's advice, you will see this pop-up menu:
The project simply references the video clips in the associated Event. Deleting the selection from the project will not remove the video from the Event, but will just extract that portion from the clip in the project, as AppleMan described.

  • Hi. Does anyone know how to delete my guest network from the list of network choices that everyone in the neighborhood sees when picking a network?  Followed helpful suggestions on this site to delete the netwk but it still appears.  Appreciate any help!

Hi.  I'm trying to make my guest network disappear from the list of network choices that appears to everyone in the neighborhood.  Even though I followed the great suggestions on how to delete the network, it's still appearing in the list that everyone sees.  It has my name and would prefer to get rid of it.
    Please help!  Many thanks!

Thank you for not only the tip but also especially the research showing that for anybody other that those using Wi-Fi for the first time the network wouldn't disappear.  I wanted it to disappear for everyone so.....I finally solved it by resetting the Airport Extreme to the factory settings and starting over from scratch!  It worked! Yay!!!!!
So, for everyone that has had this problem (and I've read many of the same complaints in different places on the Internet), you must go into Airport Utility and check the box stating that you want to reset it to the factory settings.  Do not do it with a paper clip and the reset button on the box; I tried that first and it did not work.  You must reset it via the Airport Utility.  Then just start over and you will have the choice to NOT check the box to Enable Guests.  If you want to enable guests, just be sure not to use your name or you're back to the same problem. Apple is so great with everything...wouldn't it have been so easy for them to just put this in the manual somewhere?????  Thanks for all your help.    Hope this helps others!

  • How to delete multiple music tracks

how to delete multiple music tracks?

I think rendering the audio has to do with the way I import to FCE. This is how I bring video into FCE because it seems to be the only way I can get it to work. I run my video camera through a digital coverter which runs a firewire into my Mac. I then import the video into imovie. After that is done, I do a drag and drop of the imovie into FCE. I have to render the audio because it just beeps if I don't when I play it back in FCE. I tried using the video capture in FCE but it keeps telling me it is unable to capture (my gues is the cameras are too old and the digital converter in not compatable with FCE or Mac). So once the video and audio footage is in FCE, if I click the green button on the left hand side, my rendered audio becomes a red line. However, I can click the same button on the upper video portion, and it drops the video out so I can see video clips on the lower levels and not just the first one on top. So that's why I render the audio. I can see all twelve audio tracks already. Tom- would making the change you suggest still help? Great book by the way also.
