How to delete back up from MacBook Pro?
I recently gave my old MacBook Pro to my daughter. To make sure all the APPs etc stayed on it I simply created her a user account with admin rights and deleted my user account. The problem is now half of the hard drive seems to be full of back ups which I am assuming are from my old account. I had always backed up to an external hard drive via Time Capsule.
How can I delete these from the old computer to free up space for her ?
Those are 'local snapshots'... they will 'self-delete' after one week, so there's nothing to worry about. When you delete data, the snapshots of that data remain for one week and then they're gone (along with the data that you trashed).
It's just a TM 'safety net'!

Hi ahmad25071999,
Welcome to the Support Communities!
Do you have iCloud enabled on your Macbook? If so, you can update your Contacts between all devices:
iCloud: Delete a group or a contact from a group

This article explains how to delete a group from the Contacts application on your Mac:

How do i back up my macbook pro to an external hard drive?
how do i back up my macbook pro to an external hard drive?
schmunzelmonster, greetings; Your suggestion is a good one. CCC does create a boot drive which as you point out can be most useful at times. Time Machine does not have that capability but it retains a history of activities and transactions that CCC does not. CCC only retains information as of the last update.
Neither individually is the 'perfect' backup solution individually, but if both are utilized it becomes that. There is no harm in backup redundancy.
My only complaint about CCC is that is is very slow in performing updates compared with Time Machine. Just a nit on my part.

Your Mac can't be backed up to iCloud.
If you have an external disk drive, you can set up Time Machine to backup your MBP to it. -

How does one uninstall software from macbook pro?
I realized there was a super-easy solution to find the uninstall function to uninstall ProTools. i simply typed in uninstall protools in the internal search field (the one in the top right corner). Viola, there was the uninstall window and click, the software was gone. super easy!

How do you move iMovies from MacBook Pro to iMac?
How do you move iMovies from MacBook Pro to iMac? I started some projects on my MacBook Pro but would rather have the larger working area provided on the iMac large 27 inch screen.
Hi there rainyri!
The easiest way for you to do this is to transfer the information to an external drive as an intermediary, then transfer the information from your drive to the internal drive on your iMac. We have an article that explains the steps for doing this, and it can be found here:
iMovie '11: Copy or move a project to an external hard disk

Good evening,
My college student daughter uses her macbook pro, 13" Mid-2010, for ALL her school work. A few days ago it stopped working for her. Blank screen. Turned it off and on, blank screen with the gear spinning. She took it to a place named MacExperience in Indy for diagnositcs. The tech got it working and said it was OK now ($90 later). Two hours later, same thing occurred. She returned to the tech and he indicated it is in fact the logistics board that needs repair/replacement.
She purchased an external hard drive (G-Drive 500 GB mini FW800/USB 2/FW400 7200 RPM)--that is the description from the receipt she scanned and sent to me. The tech backed up her files from the MBP to the External HD so that the files are usable on a PC until the MBP is repaired.
Will her files be intact on the MBP once it is repaired? More importantly, since the back-up was made from the MBP to use on a PC, how do we restore the files from the external HD back to the MBP so that she can use MBP with all her files, school work, etc.?
The tech said he will do it, but of course for another $90. My point is, she needs to know how to do this in the event something like this occurs again (I sure hope not!!). Furthermore, she will from now on back-up her files to the external HD, which she needs to learn to do, as well.
Thank you for your helpful replies.

I went to the Genius Bar a week ago, and the guy helping me there was nice enough to help me save some money by telling me I could replace the bad hard drive my MacBook Pro had by myself. I bought everything I needed (hard drive, screws, external hard drive) and my computer won't boot past the white start up screen. It doesn't even show the Apple sign at the start up screen. How do I back up my computer so I can save all my music, school files, etc.? Could really use someone's advice on what to do! Thanks!
Ok, to be sure I understand what's going on. You were able to boot the Macbook from the existing "damaged" internal drive, and it has been backed up to the internal.
If that is correct, your internal drive is working. Just to be sure, try booting with the R key down. Then run Disk Utility to repair the internal drive. That drive may in fact be useable.
You should be aware that you cannot boot the MBP from a Time Machine back up.
Please post back so I am sure I am understanding the situation. -
How do I remove Virtualbox from Macbook Pro?
Remove virtual box!
I am having slow issues with Mavericks since I updated. I have plenty of ram. I posted a thread and this person helped me and found virtualbox on my computer. I have never used windows on my computer. I was told by apple store to buy more ram for the slowness of my computer spinning disk when i type or open a program. I think removing virtual box will help but we are having a hard time removing it. After trying a few things he said "VirtualBox is still hanging around, and loading extensions, at this point you need 'hands on' help to remove it, this method isn't working.” Anyone know how to remove virtual box from a mac? Thought I would try one more time! and here is some more info. Thank you so much

Time Machine no longer backing up from Macbook Pro
I've been successfully using Time Machine to backup my Macbook Pro via my wireless network for a couple of years. I was also using it to backup my wife's Macbook Pro until she had to be away for a while. While she was away she used a Passport backup device connected via a USB. Now she's home again I tried to backup her computer to Time Machine again.
However, Time Machine does not recongnise any past bakups and when I try to complete a backup on it it either hangs while searching for the backup disk or at the "Preparing Backup" stage. Moreover, exactly the same thing happens when I try to backup my Macbook Pro.
Please, how do I fix this issue/Rightbrainer wrote:
Hi, I tried all of that...thanks, but no cigar :((. Still won't work. Did the verify of internal HD and followed all other instructions. Any other ideas? Could it be the formatting of the HDD?
Doubtful, since it backs up the other Mac. But it won't hurt to check it; it should have either the GUID or APM *Partition Map Scheme* and any flavor of +Mac OS Extended+ Format.
A clue might be lurking in your logs. See #A1 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for a handy widget that will display the backup messages from your logs. Copy and post the ones for one of these "hung" backups here.
It's a long shot, but something may have gone wrong with the 10.6.4 update. You might try downloading and installing the 10.6.4 "combo" update. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards. -
How can I back up a Macbook Pro with Bootcamp
Ok, so I have a 13" Macbook Pro (non-Retina) that's about 5 months old. There's loose wiring in the display, causing strange symptoms with my screen. There also seems to be something stuck in the fan, as it rattles around really loudly from inside the computer and I'm afraid it will jam and overheat. Both of these should be covered under my 1 year warranty.
If I send it into Apple or an AASP, I'm going to assume my data will be lost. I don't know how I can back up my computer so that when I get it back I can just copy across and have everything how I left it. I have Windows 7 installed with Photoshop and some games/save games that I really would not like to be lost. I have an external hard drive that should be big enough to back up both partitions. If I make it a time machine, I will lose the normal external hard drive functionality and doubt it will back up Windows too. Is there a way for me to back up both MacOSX and Windows 7 so that when I get my computer back, everything is how I left it? Thanks.Disk Utility format Pattition 1 Option GUID OS X extended journaled a blank powered external drive, use Carbon Copy Cloner for OS X partition (also copies the hidden Recovery also just in case)
You can hold the option/alt key on a wired keyboard and boot from it to confirm it's working to later reverse clone (to the same Mac model on a new drive) or use Migration Assistant to a new Mac to transfer files and apps.
Most commonly used backup methods
For BootCamp clone and restore, use WinClone 3 on another external drive.
What the format for the external drive is and how to restore BootCamp from that drive I do not know, they can tell you how to go about it.
TimeMachine is well, TimeMachine, should also do that as well for OS X to have two backups at all times. -
How do i move photos from macbook pro to a freeagent drive?
I am trying to move photos from my Macbook Pro to an external FreeAgent hard drive, but it will not allow me to "drop and drag" or copy and paste to that drive. Any suggestions as to why, or how I can get these photos onto the external drive?
Are you able to move other file types, such as documents, to your external hard disk using your Mac?
If not, the hard disk may be formatted in a file system format known as "NTFS" which is used by Windows, which can not be written to by default using Mac OS X.
To resolve this issue, you can format the hard disk as either "FAT" (which will maintain compatibility with other operating systems such as Windows) or "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" (if you are only using this hard disk using your Mac).
NOTE: Erasing and reformatting your external hard disk will remove any data that is currently stored on it. Ensure that you make a back up of any important data before proceeding.
To reformat the hard disk, open the Finder and from the menu bar choose "Go" and then click on "Utilities". Double click on Disk Utility to open it. Select your external hard disk from the list on the left hand side of the Disk Utility window, then click on the "Erase" tab on the right hand side of the window. Choose the appropriate file system format and give the volume a name (such as "Storage HD"). Then click on the Erase button.
Once Disk Utility has completed formatting your external hard disk, you should be able to copy your data to it.
Hope that helps, have a great day. -
How to Clone Hard Drive from Macbook Pro to Macbook Pro with Retina
Hey everyone! I had a question about cloning my laptop's hard drive. I was considering buying a MBP with Retina, but was wondering how I would accomplish copying over my current hard drive to the retina, as I know you can't take out the retina's hard drive, and it is flash. Any suggestions?
Connect the two with a Firewire cable if they both have Firewire ports (or use Thunderbolt if the both have Thunderbolt ports.) Boot the new computer into Target Disk Mode and the old computer normally. The new computer's disk drive should appear on the Desktop of the old computer.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination
entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new computer's drive Source means the old computer's drive.
Be sure the old computer is running a version of Mountain Lion that is later than the version installed on the new computer. After cloning you will probably need to run the new 10.8.2 updater for the new computer. OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 Update for 13" Macbook Pro with Retina Display, 21.5" iMac (Late 2012), Mac mini (Late 2012).
