How to delete pictures with iPhoto off your camera roll?

I bought iphoto to help me organize pictures on my Ipad and Iphone. I especially like the idea of being able to compair two or more similar pictures and save the best photo and delete the copies that weren't as good. I liked this feature but then discovered that it was not deleting the pictures off the camera roll.
I would love someone to tell me how to delete pictures in iphoto so they are removed from my Camera Roll at the same time. Being able to look at two pictures at the same time and decide which one you want to keep is great, but if I can't delete the one I don't want it is a waste of time.

Thanks for the reply, I agree that the Iphoto needs to be the stock app. Hope it isn't too long.

I agree that the iphoto for the ipad might not be the best place to organize, but when you are retired and traveling you would like to select the pictures you want to keep and not wait until you get home. The camera roll doesn't let you compair two or more photos to see which one is best, Iphoto does but I want the poorer photos off the ipad so I don't have to wait until I get home and I want to use the memory for the best photos. I'm trying to figure out a round about way so I know which ones to delete on the camera roll.

Lets take it by steps.
Do you have access to the phone? Is the phone is locked with a passcode (Usually 4 digit number)?
If you are referring to the Apple ID, it is irrelevant whether the email that was originally used is active or not. You will still use the email "name" as that IS the AppleID/username. If you have forgotten the password, you can reset it here:

if you do it on the phone, yes - one by one.
if it is really many photos: connect phone to your computer. open digital images. import all your photos to a folder of your choice, tick 'delete after import'. import. now your photos are gone on your phone, and inside the destination folder you selected in digital images. delete this one, too. done.

How do I delete pictures that are not on "camera Roll" that I transferd from my computer?

Delete them on your computer then sync your iPhone.
Or make sure when syncing your iPhone you remove them from the sync instructions.
You cannot delete them directly from the IPhone.

I'm wondering if there is anyway to change your backup settings through iCloud to only sync the camera roll as opposed to all of the other folders as well. Photo stream only adds new photos by design. It also only adds photos from the camera roll, not any albums (folders)*. Photos added to the camera roll are automatically added to photo stream, once enabled. The remain in photo stream for 30 days. After 30 days they are deleted from photo stream, but will remain in your My Photo Stream folder until deleted.
*Any album that includes photos from your camera roll only contains links to the photos in the camera roll, not duplicate photos. Photo stream doesn't add these "photos" because the actual photos they link to are in the camera roll.

so I have an iPhone 4s and a while back I put a photo album on my phone, but now I cannot delete it!! The delete option isn't there to do it on my device and I have tried unchecking the synced photos button on iTunes and that doesn't work, I just want them off my phone.

If unchecking and syncing in iTunes doesn’t work, you may have to use a third party tool like iPhone PC suite. With it, you can delete the photos and videos in Camera Roll, pictures in apps, pictures transferred from computer to iPhone and more. Use “Crtl + A” (for Windows) or “Command + A” (for Mac) to select all the pictures in an album and delete them, the album will disappear automatically.

Why? Because something is wrong.
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

Wife had the same problem today. Remembering that I had recently signed her up for more space on iCloud and started backing up her photos, I decided to roll the dice and turn that off. Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
Try trashing them in Safe Mode, reply if that doesn't help.

For photos transferred from your computer via the iTunes sync/transfer process - selected under the Photos tab for your iPad sync preferences with iTunes, in the same way - via the iTunes sync process. If you have one album or folder of photos selected to be transferred to your iPad, move the photos out of the selected album or folder of photos on your computer followed by a sync.
For photos saved from a received email, from a website, or imported from a digital camera, you can import these photos from your iPad with your computer as with any other digital camera followed by deleting the photos from the iPad after the import process is complete. Or you can delete these photos direct from your iPad.
