How to deselect the "close network" option with Time Capsule?

After selecting the "close network" option in the settings I lost connection. When I check the Utility AirPort the machine looks for wireless devices but finds nothing because it's hidden. How do I deselect the "close network" option and see my network again? Tks!!!

Temporarily, connect an Ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <--> ports on the back of the Time Capsule and turn off the wireless on the computer.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Click the Wireless Network Options button
Remove the check mark next to "Create a closed network"
Click Update to save your settings and allow 25-30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart.

IF.... .no other backups have occured since you deleted the file, you might be able to retrieve it using an application like Disk Warrior. It's about $100 as I recall, and there are no guarantees that it will work.

Any of the free or low priced utilities that you might see or try will not be able to retrieve a deleted file from a Time Capsule.
If any backups have occured since you deleted the file, the deleted file has almost certainly been overwritten. No way to retrieve it in that case.

How to setup 24 hours guest network access with Time Capsule 4th gen. ?

I just bought a Time Capsule 2TB and I cannot find the setting to limit the network access to 24 hours.
I updated the firmware and Airport Utility to the latest version and it seems that most of help on this setting I fond on internat are based on previous version.
By example I do not have a "Manual setting" in the "Base Station" menu like described in the manual.
Can someone help on this ?

Suggest that you download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion. It will have the settings that you are looking for.
You can keep both AirPort Utility 5.6 and 6.0 on your Mac and use the one that you need.

Next question.....you really should not try to have two wireless networks....one Arris and another Time Capsule.....unless it is absolutely necessary. Two wireless routers in close proximity can create wireless interference effects that can cause problems with either...or both...networks.
Best to turn off the wireless on one router to keep the chances of wireless interference between routers minimized.

Network design with time capsule

Need a little help - I have 7 imacs/mbp - 1 imac is ftp only and 2 large copiers networked plus 3 individual printers. at this point all printers/copiers and ftp site are hardwired the rest are wireless(Older airport) connected with a router (Netgear) and airport extreme(Older model).
I am going to replace the extreme with a Time capsule.
1- my present setup is cable modem ->Router with 5 printers/copiers & FTP computer hardwired-CAT 5- AND Airport Extreme plugged in to router. Computers then "talk" with them through Wifi via AE. Is there a better way to do this when I upgrade to a TIme Capsule?
2- can the TIme capsule "Back Up" all 7 macs (including the hardwired ftp site- it does have airport besides being hardwired (for download speed)
If anyone has any suggestions - please help - this is one of those 20 yr old networks that has "evolved" into a mess and hopefully I can re- work it for speed and efficiency....

Ok first I have to tell you that the Time Capsule does not like it when its not the main device on the network. When its joined to a network or set as a bridge it can cause backup issues and can even corrupted backups. How it works is the computer will send all the data to the main router then the main router will have to send the data to the TC with can cause data loss.
Now I don't know if you are using older Mac's or Mac's with 10.5.8 if you can use Time Machine to do you backup then it will be able to back up all you computers. NOTE: Time Machine backups all files and the OS by default this will take up some space on your TC.
You can setup the TC to join the network and you should be able to access that drive via all computers and even use Time Machine but again there could be issues with data loss. As for the FTP Mac I need work info on how its setup and what OS it is running to tell you how to do backups.
So after all this my main question is why not replace the Netgear router with the TC
The best way to set this network up would be like this:
Modem -> TC then ethernet or wifi all the other computers.
If you are looking to get more signal in you house for the Wifi then what you getting now that old UFO Extreme will hurt you more then anything. Picking up a 99.00 Airport Express and telling it to Extend the network wirelessly will solve that issue and even give you Airtunes in your house.
Please let me know if there a reason for the Netgear.

How to access the hard drive in my Time Capsule via ethernet, not wireless

I have a new Netgear 802.11ac router with ethernet ports. I also have an older (4 years old) Time Capsule that I replaced with the new Netgear router. My iPhoto library was recently corrupted (long story there). I don't have a backup except on my Time Capsule. How do I access the Time Capsule's hard drive over ethernet so that I can copy the iPhoto Library off of it and onto my Thunderbolt external hard drive? It's the only chance I have to save years of photos (my iPhoto library is 258 Gb large). I don't want to do this wirelessly. I've tried using ethernet cable from the TC to my Macbook Pro and to one of the ethernet ports on the Netgear router, but to no avail. I'm sure it's got to be simple but I've almost given up trying different configurations.

Plug the TC directly into the netgear by ethernet.
Then do a factory reset. This will not harm your existing backups in any way.
The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel.. add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Connect to the TC by wireless.. this is just to do the setup..
Put the TC in bridge mode.
The TC will now appear as a client in the Netgear and should be accessible.. if not there is something else going on.. the Netgear may not be working properly with the TC. It happens.
I am not sure what equipment you have.. but if you have a thunderbolt connected hard drive.. how are you then connecting by ethernet to the Netgear.. as I understand it, unless your hard disk has a thunderbolt passthough port.. and you have tested and found the ethernet does still work with the hard disk in the chain.
There is no reason you cannot do it direct to the TC if you have enough ports. But the TC should be reset as above so it is in router mode. That is the only way you can connect to it as otherwise it is bridged.

Network printing with time capsule doesn't work with OS X Lion

I have a canon printer which will print when it is set up and connected to my imac. However when it is set up and connected to time capsule it will not print. It thinks it has completed the job but it hasn't.
I think that this may have something to do with OS X Lion.
The printer is just new, I bought it as the old one was playing up - I had been unable to get the old one which was connected via the time capsule to print since installing OS X Lion but never put two and two together - I just assumed the the printer had eventually died! So I bought a new one! It seems to set up OK as it is recognised as being attached to the timecapsule but there is no out put.
Does anyone have any ideas as how to sort this out?

Using Linksys WRT54G as a wired network extender with Time Capsule

I have been using the WRT54G as my primary home router with an Airport Express attached to it via Ethernet cable at the opposite end of the house to extend my network. I have recently purchased a Time Capsule, which I plan to make my primary router, and I would like to use the Linksys as the extender and free up the AE to take to my office for music streaming. Is this a doable solution, and is the Linksys difficult to set up for this purpose? The AE currently uses the same network name and password as the Linksys and is a seamless extension of my network. I'd like for the new configuration to be just as seamless.

That is doable if you connect the Linksys to the Time Capsule using the ethernet cable and configure the Linksys in "bridge mode" to use the exact same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network.

The Express would be configured to "join" a wireless network for this. The Express will pick up the strongest signal from either the Time Capsule or Linksys, depending on where they are located in relation to each other.
I'd like for the new configuration to be just as seamless.

HT4628 Limit on the # of IP Addresses with Time Capsule?

I seem to only be able to connect 6 devices to my wireless network at one time, and I often have to reset my modem and Time Capsule to get something to connect. My internet service provider said it's probably a limit to the # of IP addresses through the Time Capsule. Is that true? Any other advice?
I have the 2TB Time Capsule with iMac, Macbook, iPhone, Xoom tablet, and printer that I regularly connect to it.

Assuming that the Time Capsule is configured as your router, the Time Capsule will provide up to 200 IP addresses unless you have changed the settings. You can adjust it to provide up to 250 if you need more than 200.
If the Time Capsule is in Bridge Mode to work with your modem/router, then it is up to your modem/router to issue IP addresses.
Your Time Capsule is not configured to act as the router for your network since you told us above that......
Airport Utility is set as "Router Mode: Off(Bridge Mode)".
Configure the Time Capsule Router Mode = DHCP and NAT if you want it to act as the router for your network.....not as a bridge.

From the Mac as it is easier to use.. open airport utilty and go to the disks, file sharing page. turn on the guest account.. give read write access.. and make sure the TC is in the correct workgroup or type in the work group name.. update the TC.
In vista.. Open windows explorer.. in the address bar type \\ip\
IP meaning the IP of the TC. . wait.. waiting wait.. windows scratches its bum.. thinks some more.. will finally kick up a username and password request.. type in whatever you need. Voila.. TC appears.

Make a hard drive attached to the Airport Extreme work with Time Capsule?

I have an external hard drive attached to my airport extreme that shows up on my desktop as if it was attached locally, but time machine recognizes it as the wrong format. In the Get Info screen, the drive's format appears to be 'Appleshare', when it is actually Mac OS Extended (Journaled). How can I make it appear as Mac OS extended again?

There is nothing wrong. The drive will appear as Appleshare since the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) is providing file sharing services. That should not be a problem for Time Machine use.
