How to det if HP printer is communicating to Airport via USB or wireless

Been using my new iMac and Airport base station for only 1 week. I have the Airport base station connected via a USB cable to an HP all in one 3300 series printer/scanner/fax. The printer has built in wireless capability. However, it is on the old 802.11g/b technology. Representative at the Apple store instructed me to hook up the printer to the base station via the USB port, instead of using a wireless network. Apple store representative mentioned that having one product on the wireless network which communicates using the old g/b format, will slow down all of the other communications on the network (internet, iMac, etc). So how do I determine if the HP printer is communicating with the network via the USB or using the built in wireless protocol??
One more issue - I am trying to get my old Windows XP based HP PC to communicate with the same printer. I installed a NetGear transmitter (with the 802n technology) on the old PC. The old PC communicates fine to surf the internet. However, printing does not work? The HP printer software is still on the old PC - did not remove it while moving the computer to a different room.
Help with either issue would be much appreciated.

If you want to scan then you will need to use the wireless connection.

Did you connect the printer to the wireless network? It won't generally do this automatically.
Unplug the USB if you can still print then the printer is connected wirelessly.

  • How do I make my printer more secure while connected via USB to my Airport?

So a neighbor (a friend, fortunately) accidentally installed my printer on her computer via the network (her computer showed it as a 'Bonjour' printer) and started printing stuff, even though my printer is connected to an encrypted Airport Extreme.
My printer (an old HP deskjet 5550) is connected via USB to my Airport Extreme, which has a WPA2 secure password protecting it. Also, the "Share this printer" box was unchecked in the printer utility.
The DSL lines for me and my 20 condo neighbors all convene in the basement somewhere into one or several master routers.
I'm concerned about this breach of security (obviously) and wondering about security of my iMac as well. The iMac is connected to the base station wirelessly and has the firewall set to 'Set access for specific services and apps'.
I figured if the Airport Extreme has the WPA2 password set (and no one else knows the password) that no one would be able to gain access to the printer that is wired to it, or the iMac that's wirelessly connected.
What am I missing? How did this happen? and what can I do to ensure my network isn't visible or vulnerable to my neighbors or others with bad intent?

are there settings in the airport utility that you can adjust to make it unshareable from the router?
The "bonjourness" of the access to your printer suggests that your firewall is probably doing its job.
If your DSL connection is connected to the WAN port on the AE then the folks on the DSL side of your set up should only be able to see things on your LAN that you've set for 'access from the internet'. e.g. allow access to my printer/disk/... from the internet.
For printers there's an airport utility setting 'share printers over ethernet WAN port' and 'advertise printers globally using bonjour'. How's that set?

Exactly my point: it's not a problem of not having the right printer, it's a matter of iOS not allowing it because Air Print is blocking it, probably because of a deal with HP.
But, I've solved the problem so now I can print from my iMac, my Mac Air, my iPhone and my iPad. No thanks to the folks at Apple who purposely blocked that functionality.
Can you print from your iPad directly to the printer without involving an intervening computer, yes or no.

  • TS3147 connect OS X 10.9.2 macbook air to windows 7 network and share printer (Brother HL-2230) connected via USB to the same network

Would like to share printer Brother HL-2230 on windows 7 network.  Using Windows 7  "Homegroup" is not an option.
The printer (HL-2230) is connected via USB to win 7 computer.  Before I updated OS to 10.9.2  it (Macbook air) had  HL-2230 as one of its' priinters and was able to print.  Now a print request hangs on "Hold for authentication".
I have already reset printer system and re-installed printer x2 - no luck.
I have already connected WiFi Epson XP-200 to the Macbook air - runs fine, no problem.
thx for any help that can lead to the resolution of this problem.

  • Can you use Time Capsule as a print server for printers connected via Ethernet or wirelessly?

Can you use Time Capsule as a print server for printers connected via Ethernet or wirelessly?
I know that it works marvelous for printers connected via USB, but I'd like to know if you can use it as a more general print server.

No, you can't, but what do you expect to gain by doing so?
The main advantage of the print server is to provide multi-user network access to a printer that typically only supports a single connection. Since, by definition, your printer already has a network connection and can be used by multiple users.

  • How do I get the printer to work with AirPort?

I have had my printer connected via USB cable to the AirPort for a while, but recently when I had to disconnect the printer for some home improvement, I ended up with problems.
Upon reconnecting the printer to the AirPort, I started receiving this message:
    USB Power
A device connected to this Apple Wi-Fi base station's USB port requires more power than this Apple Wi-Fi base station can provide.  Plug the device into a power supply if possible, or connect it to a powered USB hub.
My printer is connected to a power source, but I still cannot print to it.  I can see the printer when I send something to be printed, but it will not actually print.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get my printer to work again?

Thanks for the detail. The dash separates the "main" and "guest" network.
There are a number of settings that are 2.4 GHz on both networks. The only time the dash separates 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz is on the last 3 settings.
Since the printer specifications available on the HP site show it is a b/g device only, I suspect that the printer does not like the current guest setting of 802.11 b/g/n you are currently using, which is also what it would be if the AEBS was set on Automatic.
    Try the following setting:
    802.11n only 5 GHz - 802.11 b/g
It's really the only choice that would keep the 5 GHz that you want on the "main" network and possibly allow the printer to connect. Unfortunately, the optimal choice for range and speed is not the setting that you may need to work with the printer.
If the printer still won't connect, I would call it a day and when it comes time for a new printer, look first for an ethernet device or at least an "n" device that will handle 5 GHz if you want a wireless printer. The advantage of an ethernet printer would be that it would also work over your wireless.
Please post back on your findings.

  • Set up printer connected to Time Capsule via USB and print without WiFi

Is there any way to do this? We use a Time Capsule for daily backups, for both Mac and PCs, and have a printer that we would like to share between all of them. Before, we had the printer connected to a PC as this allowed both PCs and Macs to print to it, but of course the PC had to be on. For whatever reason, when we plugged the printer into a Mac, the PCs couldn't connect or print.
From what Apple has told me, I have two options:
    1. Share the printer via WAN, which is not desirable, as any other office could then print to our printer.
    2. Create a hidden, password-protected, wireless network. This causes problems for two reasons. Firstly, we are not permitted to "extend" the network, and by creating a wireless network and attaching it onto the ethernet network, we are basically doing that. Secondly, if we did create this wireless network, computers that connected to the network to be able to see the printer would then default to the wireless network for internet access, rather than the ethernet connection.
If I am misunderstanding something, or someone has an idea of how to password protect a printer connected to a Time Capsule without using wifi, I would greatly appreciate it.

Sharing via WAN through the Time Capsule, for whatever reason, is not password protected. Any computer in our building can see the printer, and use it. When we were sharing the printer through the PC / Bonjour, when setting up the printer on a new machine, a valid username and password from the connected PC was required.
I should add that the purpose of trying to share this via the Time Capsule, rather than the PC, is that the Time Capsule is always on, and we notice an increase in performance when the PCs are powered down regularly.

  • Can't print from pc to mx922 via usb cable.

    I have a mx922 and I'm running windows 8.1
Can't print from the pc using a usb cable but the 922 will print wireless.
Is there a setting I'm missing?
    Thank You.

    Hi mrmustard,
There is not a specific setting to make it so that you can print via USB; what error or message do you receive when trying to print? Also, do you have another USB cable that you can use to connect the printer to your computer?

  • I'm installing a printer on a MacBook Air via USB connected DVD drive.  The computer asks for my password.  I don't hink we ever had one.  Is there a default password ("admin"

I'm installing a printer on a MacBook Air using an external DVD drive via USB.  The computer is asking for my password to authorize changes to the system.  I don't htink I ever put one on the computer and "admin" and "password" don't work.  Is there a default password?  Or a way to change a password that has been forgotten, wothout resetting the computer and wiping everything out?  Thanks.

Many thanks.  As it happens, I wen to the local Apple Store today for an appointment with a "genius".  She helped me reset the password. And as I look at the screens on the page that you connected me to, they're the same as the genius used.  So your suggesstion was right on the money, and now I'm all set.  Thanks again.

  • Airport Extreme - Use a Printer and Ext. Harddisk via USB hub same time?

I would like to purchase a Wireless Router that would allow me to use a printer (Dell All in One 962) and an External Hard Disk (yet to buy)simultaneously. I liked the Netgear WNDR 3700 router, but it does not support printer sharing!
Would Airport Extreme Router allow me to use both at the same time via high speed USB hub? Are all USB printers and USB external hard disks compatible with this router - any compatibility guide available?
    Message was edited by: JJacob

You won't know for sure until you try, but you can get some indication by trying the following "test".
Plug the Dell device into the USB port on the AirPort Extreme and make sure it is powered up.
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock and then open Print & Fax. Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list box.
Does your printer name show up in the next box? If so, click on the printer name to highlight it, then click the Add button at the lower right to install the printer at that location.
Keep in mind that if your device is compatible, only the print function will work when your all-in-one is connected to the AirPort. Scan, copy, maintenance and other functions are not supported when the device is connected to the AirPort, so if you need these services, you'll have to connect the all-in-one directly to your computer when you need them.

  • 5510 - prints via USB and wirelessly but can't print emails from ePrint on iphone

Just installed new Photosmart 5510. Prints fine via USB (main computer) and wirelessly (laptop) but I can't print anything from ePrint app on iPhone. HP ePrint Home & Biz works from iPhone but it doesn't have email printing function!

    Hi Andy760,
From your iPhone, printing email would be from Apple Airprint.  With your email open, touch the action button and select Print.  You might have to select the printer, but it should print fine at that point.
To send email to print by using ePrint, you would forward the email to the printer's ePrint email address.  Have you registered the printer on www.eprintcenter.com?

  • How can I prevent others from accessing my camera roll via usb?

How can I prevent other people from accessing my camera via a usb?  I do not want anyone to be able to copy or view the pictures on my iphone.

Yes, leave your personal account running in the background and the guest account in the foreground, or if that's somehow inconvenient (and with fast user switching I don't think it is really), you can lock the Dock with a program like Tinkertool (System?) or Onyx and lock applications from removal by locking their status in file info (apple+a to select all the apps, apple + click to unselect the drawers or non-apps, and then applealti to do multiple file info at once) and then click the lock square. Then back out to the apps folder info itself and lock it.

  • HT201593 How to transfer photos from a Mac to my iPhone via USB?

I know how to transfer photos iPhone --> Mac, bit I can't find instructions anywhere for transferring photos Mac --> iPhone, not via USB, which one would think is the fastest and safest alternative.
Running latest Yosemite, all apps up to date + iPhone up to date as well.
    Please advice

Sync the phone to iTunes. Configure iTunes sync for Photos to include the photos you want to transfer. Or you put your photos into iPhoto and simply sync from iPhoto as the source.

    Hi,
Our firm using HP Printers and we need to deploy printer in Citrix Environment where setting does not save to the Base PC Image.
Because our Environment is Citrix (User Settings and Printer are deployed when user login).
Can we build the setting into the Base PC Image for All users?

I am currently using Powershell Script to install printers during login, all the printer driver has been installed to the Base PC Image.
But the trouble I have is when the script run to completion.
    It only added the printer.
I've been googling, but I can't find a way to detect printer tray or how to set all the tray to A4.
